So the food and drinks were great. Lovely to sit outside. The heat lamp was perfect. We occasionally had a lovely female server who was so kind but the other two men were far too uptight to allow their guests to enjoy their experience. We abide, respect and understand the mask situation. We were told we only had 1.5 hours at the table, while having a reservation. So we felt rushed right from the start. Time passed and we were able to stay later which was nice also no one else had arrived needing a table. We told the waiter to let us know when they would be needing the table back. Mind you we racked up a pretty nice sized bill. Suddenly Instead of just dropping the check for us they just sharked around our table asking when we were ready and on my way to the rest room, the perfunctory host with the red sweat shirt asked me if we were wrapping up soon. I told him I believe someone asked for the check. At any time they could have dropped the check and instead chose to keep asking when we were done. Again we were spending money supporting their business not just sitting there with one drink all night. When customers are at your establishment to support your business, all one can ask is that you don't be a dick to your nice customers. It's very simple. Came here with a friend around 9:30/10pm on a Saturday night post re-opening during the pandemic. Wait staff was nice and gave great recommendations for both drinks + food. He suggested the crab roll over the lobster roll, and it just hit the spot! The drink was also very suitable for my friend's palette. Very nice time overall! A kind tip (not related to service) is to bring bug spray if you happen to sit near the plants after the rain after dark because I got bit by mosquitoes a few times. read more

The Orange wine on the menu was not available so I ended up getting another glass of Orange wine (forgot the name) but it was really nice! Super friendly service, attentive servers even though they are very busy, great cozy atmosphere and perfect place for a date or chill with a couple friends! The charcuterie was creative; shrimp sausage was different )but didn't quite give shrimp vibes), always a fan of lox and dill, smoked trout rillette was yum, and scallop pancetta was yum. But the raw bar is why we showed up and it was delicious. With the oysters came a variety of "flavor enhancers" (taco, pina colada, carrot, shallot, etc) that came in eye droppers. Since we got there our waitress (Christen) had an attitude, also she dropped the Tabasco sauce all over my friend's pants, we ordered a bottle of wine and dropped it in the middle of our table hitting/breaking a candle, dropped the wine all over us and food was all covered with tiny pieces of glass, she didn't even apologized, the manager came replaced our food, otherwise the drinks are really good, we ended up leaving the place because we all felt uncomfortable with the bad looks/attitudes. When we got the check, we were charged for the full amount. If I'm in charge of a restaurant and the waitress drop a dipping plate of tabasco sauce on one of my costumers, then dropped a glass of wine on another costume, the LEAST I can do is give a compensation as an apology. This was our second stop for the evening hop and it did not disappoint! We were looking for a pretty spot with a few small plates and creative cocktails. This place is perfect for sharing small plates, slurping oysters, and drinking excellent cocktails. It is is dimly lit with dark wood cabinets behind the dark wood bar. When I walked in I felt like the vibe was romantic and friendly. It has a huge bar and lots of tables. We were sat in the back at a corner table with a bench that we loved because we could sit next to each other and see the whole restaurant. Cause who doesn't love to people watch and make up stories about everyone's life. I had the cocktail of the evening and then had another one as I drank it too fast cause it was simply delectable. I wish I knew more about it so I could try to make it at home. We indulged and shared three plates. The first was the bread and butter. The bread was a bit too cooked in some parts, but the rest of it and the butter were so yummy that we overlooked it as I know some people like their bread more toasted than I do. We wanted to try the deviled eggs, but we had eaten some at the last place so we had to place. Next was the shaved Brussels sprouts with smoked gouda, pumpernickle, and chayote. We wanted to lick the plate when there was no more left. The last dish was charred octopus 'al pastor' with black beans, barley, and tomatillo salsa. We have eaten a lot of charred octopus in our lives and this was one of the best dishes we have ever had as it was cooked perfectly and the spread that went with it were divine! Who else knew that black beans and octopus would taste so lovely together?! There were many other of things we wanted to try but they will have to wait for next time. The beer list is nicely curated, and it included some big names such as The Alchemist and Stillwater. I did find that the draft for pours were pretty small for the price, though. I rarely mention this unless it's very noticeable, but I was very surprised by how unwelcome I felt by our waitress. It seemed like we were annoying her since we didn't know exactly what we wanted to order right away. She also didn't ask how things were - something you only notice when you're not asked. I asked for bread and butter (while also ordering 25 oysters, two glasses of wine and beer) and I was charged $10 for the bread. I couldn't believe it. There is bread on the menu with caviar, and I said that I would just like a side of bread and butter. The waiter came with one piece of bread, together with nicely designed butter spread on the plate - and that was a $10 piece of bread. This place is truly a hidden gem, and so underrated! I probably passed by it many times - there is no sign outside. But somehow, my partner in crime found it in search for fresh oysters, and here we were, enjoying their happy hour for drinks and oysters. 4 kinds of east coast oysters were available for happy hour special ($1 each), but we also could not resist Kusshi from BC. All were fresh, and Kushi was so tender and so good! (yeah, we reordered *few* more times, could not stop!) Other items on menu are worth trying, of course - grilled octopus with celeriac & celery oil was tender and perfectly cooked; and "Surryano" Ham is nice charcuterie dish to nibble on. They also have pretty extensive drinks menu - I had Little Blue, and liked it a lot. Served in frozen metal blue mug, it's bourbon-based drink with a little bit absinthe, and minty aftertaste. Atmosphere here is relaxing, it's down-to-earth bar. Staff is super-helpful and very, very nice. Everything came on time, no delays in food or drinks - which was muchly appreciated since we had to go to the theater after this little adventure. Even check arrived in seconds after we asked for it. I like oysters. I like drinking cocktails. I love seafood. I like Mile End. I follow Daniel Krieger on Instagram. And I love Prime Meats. Basically, Grand Army had all the ingredients to be an awesome bar. I went even though there were several bad Yelp reviews just to see for myself. Unfortunately, the 50,000,000 Elvis fans weren't wrong this time. Maybe I should save this review until after they complete their first month, but Pete Wells I'm not. I came by on a Tuesday and according to the bartender, it was unusually slow. That should mean great service, right? Actually, no. They really treat this place like it's an industry happy hour. The head bartender spends his time talking to his friends seated at the bar. When asked what's good on the menu, he provides a very unhelpful answer of "it's my menu, so I think it's all good". He also told my friend the same thing when he asked later. Come on, dude. You know what the fuck I mean. After some teeth pulling and telling him I wanted a drink on the stronger side, he came back with The Granville, which is a pretty weak gin drink with mint. I had the misfortune of being sandwiched between two people who were also friends with the head bartender, so I was basically ignored for a good 15 minutes before I could place a food order with a different bartender, who was a much cooler/warmer guy. Their oyster prices are actually pretty ridiculous. I feel like they're trying to be Maison Premiere, but don't have the oyster variety or the reasonable prices. I ordered a variety of Washington oysters, starting at $3.75 apiece and ending at a whopping $4.25 each. The Kushi's were pretty bad, and the Shigoku's weren't anything special. The Totten Virginica's were pretty good though. Everything was a little on the lukewarm side, which isn't a good sign. Their eyedropper bottles were really gimmicky, and kind of spit in the face of fresh oysters. But I'll have to admit, the Jamaican jerk sauce was interesting enough. So that's at least three strikes, if we're keeping score. Against my better judgment, I stayed for another drink and more food. The drink was the Kansas City Southern, which was a much better drink and basically what I wanted the first time around (and when I was $13 richer). Around this time, the head bartender overheard my friend and I talking about other bartenders in the area we knew, and he finally started talking to us like we were worth his time. It felt like a networking function. Anyway, I also ordered two of their small plates. The first was the dayboat scallops, which were two small portions of scallop pieces with pickled jalapeno, puffed rice (which gave it a weird texture and no extra flavor) on top of what looked like leaves. Not filling at all, and really did nothing to emphasize the scallop flavor (and I love scallops). Also had the shrimp cocktail, which was 4 pieces for $12. The shrimp were fresh and decently sized, but at $3 apiece, I expected better. All in all, Grand Army has a lot of promise, but I'll give it a month or two before/if I return so they can hopefully get their shit together. Because right now, it kinda blows. Good beer selection though. If we're still keeping score, they're at 5 strikes and minus 3 stars. read more

The only reason I didn't give this place a full 5 stars is because their cocktails aren't a part of their happy hour deal. And let's be honest, with the vast array of cocktails on the menu, you'd want to try them all, but that $13 price quickly stops you in your tracks. What IS a part of happy hour? $1 oysters, beer and wine. The $1 oysters pulled my friend in and I followed. Never really been a big fan of oysters, but after 4 drinks, I'll try anything. And I did. They were delightful. Our bartenders Kevin and Matt were attentive and kept our cups full. Kevin made us drinks that weren't on the menu, so I can't even recommend any, but they were all good. Not really a place for dinner. They had some some finger foods, but nothing was really appealing to me. After 20 oysters and 4 drinks (each), we left and had dinner somewhere else. We over hear that the kitchen is closed but the kitchen guy doesn't mind doing oysters, wanted to see if we could also do shrimp cocktail since its from the raw bar. At this point the bartender has yet to greet us. ( I know we should've left) Anywho, rude waitress is walking by, I tried asking her a question but before I could even get the first word out she states " You're going to have to ask the bartender since you're at the bar". Just know, Rude waitress that you are an EPIC TURD. Bartender comes over she's sweet a little bit crazy but we like it. Makes my drink, super weak, I ordered GIN (The Fountainhead) because I Like to get a bit tipsy not chug it down and still be sober. We ordered oysters which are ridiculously priced especially for a place with such little variety. They were okay anyway. The concentrated sauces were delicious! We only like ratchet once were drunk, please get us drunk before you as the staff start sitting at the bar and cursing loudly and talking about all the other crap in your life. We definitely wouldn't have minded if someone asked if we would like another round. Business is business, teach your staff this. If I lived in the neighborhood, this would 1000% be my go-to spot. Happy hour oysters + good cocktails + extensive menu for brunch AND dinner + cute atmosphere means this place checks all the boxes. It even has a fireplace in the winter to create some cozy vibes that are a must for me this time of year. This place is known for its oysters that come with a set of droppers with unique sauces to put on top. Honestly I am a fan of just keeping it simple and sticking with lemon but I totally appreciate the appeal and thought it was really fun! For food, I have had the mussels twice and they are my absolute favorite. They are always really big and juicy mussels and come in this fantastic spicy coconut sauce. It was a really big portion as well so I recommend you share. The cocktails are also phenomenal. They offer a daily "bosses cabinet" for $12 which has never let me down. We came and waited only a few minutes for a table and then splurged on 24 beautiful, cheap, delicious oysters perfectly presented on two tiers of ice with little droppers filled with different sauces. Beer prices were lowered for happy hour too and I loved the mixture of a sour beer with my oysters. She was kind, attentive but not overbearing, and very knowledgeable about the food (particularly the raw bar). Only point of improvement would be their overall organization/seating. We came by at 6 -- there were a few tables open and we were told there would be a 15-30 minute wait. We sat on a bench (no table nearby) while we were waiting and were asked to stand since it might be used later that night for seating. We complied and watched both the two benches and three 4-person tables sit empty for 35 minutes until we were seated. read more
