As a competitive athlete in martial arts, sports medicine and therapies have been as regularly a part of my life as my training routines. I first came to Grand Central Physical and Hand Therapy for a hand injury in 2006. I had been kicked in my hand in a competition, fracturing my finger and damaging the corresponding tendon in my hand. Once my cast was off, I began working with David Ricci to regain my range of motion and strength so that I could continue to compete. One thing I valued immediately about David was that he understood each persons needs, not just medically but personally. Where most doctors would have been extra conservative and ban me from practicing, David understood that I was a competitive athlete, and gave me a treatment plan that would take precautions for my safety and rehabilitation while allowing me to do as much as I could to keep in shape and train as much as was safely possible. In addition, he has a knack for creating custom splints and devices to pull or push my fingers and hand, so that I'd even be working on regaining my flexiblity in my sleep. Despite my injury, I was able to compete through the year around my rehab, and made a full recovery. Fast forward a few years after that injury had healed - I suffered a much greater injury to my hand, breaking it into pieces and requiring surgery for reconstruction of the bone. Immediately after my cast removal, I was referred to the hand therapist in the same building of my surgeon, as I was not allowed to walk outside with my hand unprotected. After she had made a splint for me, I immediately went straight to David's office to have him remake it for me - better. After the long wait and cramped space in the other therapist's office, the expanded sections of Grand Central PT/HT were a welcome sight. Another story I can tell is of a conversation between myself and a girl on my flag football team, who had also had surgery on her finger for an injury. She had been complaining about her finger, and I mentioned that I had a great hand therapist that she should see. She responded thanks but no thanks, because SHE had the best hand therapist - and that in fact, I should switch to hers! We went back and forth for awhile, neither willing to concede. One day, I walked in for an appointment with David, and I saw my friend in the office, doing exercises for her finger. I asked her what she was doing there, and she said "David is my hand therapist" - to which I said "no ... David is MY hand therapist!" Oddly enough, in our debate over whose hand therapist was the best, his name had never come up! All stories aside, I can vouch that David is the best around, and that his patients will get personal care and attention to get themselves to recovery. I suffered an accidental trauma to my hand, in which I completely severed a tendon and nerve in my index finger with a sword (yeah, a sword). I literally had no sensation along the outside of my index finger, limited mobility and a massive wound across my palm. Keep in my mind that until you lose sensation in your index finger, you don't realize how much you use it for. It's totally essential. Post-Op, I could not bend my hand from a claw-like state (it was literally stuck this way), and I had massive scar tissue built up beneath the incision site (from the initial trauma and the surgery). I started working with Dave Ricci of Grand Central Physical Therapy at the end of January 2015 (surgery was Jan 2nd). In working with Dave through many sessions and performing his prescribed homework (exercises to do outside of sessions - repetitive and boring, but ultimately invaluable to a successful rehab), which was clearly explained, often with printouts as visual demonstrations, I saw results within a matter of days. Within a few weeks, I was typing as usual. After a few months now, I can drive, work out and even brace myself from a fall without any fear of pain or re-injury. It is pretty much business as usual, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how well this recovery has gone. But, honestly, I owe it all to Dave Ricci. Dave has a wealth of knowledge related to these types of injuries and, more importantly, the recovery needed to get back to full strength. He provides clear instructions on exercises, explains the inner workings of injuries and functionality (for those like me, who are neurotic) and thoroughly answers any and all questions. The environment is friendly and each person receives adequate attention during sessions, with real-time guidance on exercise and techniques (e.g., massaging scar tissue to improve flexibility, etc.) in the rehab process. In addition, Dave tailors all rehabilitations to the person, injury and situation, and adjusts it accordingly. There is no "one size fits all" approach. Overall, Dave is a patient, articulate and compassionate person and professional, and I genuinely consider him to be friend. For anybody considering a physical therapist for this kind of injury, a fracture, break, or any other kind of problem with the hand, wrist, arm, or otherwise, I strongly encourage you to see Dave Ricci at Grand Central Physical Therapy. As an active and competitive athlete, I was naturally concerned with finding the right physical therapist after having my ACL (knee) repaired due to a sports injury in college. By chance, I was connected with Rob, Hector and Dave at Grand Central PT, and they took care of the rest. Looking back, it's clear that I could not have had a better PT experience. Not only did they make a challenging process pleasant, but most importantly I was able to make a complete recovery, without any limitations whatsoever. In fact, I went back to enjoying my usual active lifestyle (running, playing soccer, snowboarding, rock climbing, golfing, etc.). And then (as if that wasn't enough), when I found myself in the hospital with a serious ankle injury after a freak accident, I decided to look them up (after 10 years!) to see if they could help. Just before my wrist surgery in March, an operating room Nurse learned that I work in the Grand Central area. She insisted on giving me a slip of paper with address of "the best Physical therapist you could ever hope for, David Ricci." Luckily, I went to his office. I have enjoyed an extremely satisfactory & comforting process of hand therapy in the months ever since surgery. Before starting therapy, friends told me to expect a lot of pain and to consider taking aspirin before each session! Pain is hardly ever part of the session thanks to David's knowledge and "hands on" approach. David's experience and conscientious attention to your recovery show in every minute of therapy. He spares no energy while switching between the various therapy tools available for your benefit at Grand Central Therapy. David also has a coaching manner that keeps you motivated and hopeful--both during sessions and while doing your "homework" exercises. The facilities are attractive and the front office staff is tremendous at handling your medical claims and other concerns. I was referred to David Ricci through my hand surgeon and I'm very thankful. After surgery and six weeks in a cast from a fractured wrist, David helped to give me back my motion and flexibility. David spent time making protective splints and also splints to help me get the most out of my home exercises. In-office therapy included warm up, hand/wrist massage and bending, therapy with machines to extend movement, and a cool down. My strength and range of motion improved every week. David's very knowledgeable and focused. He was very attentive to my progress and added new movements and exercises to help push my recovery further. This was an experience that now makes me value the need for physical therapy. I was able to come in early mornings before work. Sessions lasted for about an hour and I never had to wait for David. He's very flexible if you need to end a session a bit early. Often he let the session go longer just so I could get a couple more exercises in. The staff is very helpful with scheduling and payments. Once my insurance ran out, the office offered an affordable option that was money well spent. read more

I highly recommend Grand Central Physical Therapy. I've had a wonderful experience with Grand Central Physical Therapy twice over the past 3 years. Through two separate injuries, Dave and Hector helped me completely recover from a fractured wrist/elbow and knee issue. Dave and Hector are both very experienced in physical therapy, incredibly hard working, kind and genuinely care about their patients' recovery. The office is conveniently located above Grand Central and they are flexible with scheduling around work schedules (offering early morning, lunch and evening appointments). The space is clean, organized and well stocked with high-end PT supplies. The office staff is incredibly friendly and helpful in navigating the insurance coverage. I don't usually submit reviews, but I think this group are as good as it gets. I have had two injuries to my left hand. Twelve years ago I shattered my radius bone, and last November I broke a finger. The surgeon in both cases was the same, but I was referred to different PTs in each case. My recovery for the wrist 12 years ago seemed OK at the time, and my recovery from the finger was quick and effective. However, my wrist TODAY is vastly improved due to David's efforts. The office staff members are very helpful with appointments and insurance issues. I have enjoyed meeting the other patients during my sessions, and getting other patients' feedback on the therapists and my surgeon. It is an older office, so it is dated, but clean. And the equipment, tools and techniques are state of the art. I have seen three PTs in my life and they are the best ever by multiples! read more

I broke my hand playing recreational basketball, and after putting a couple screws into my metacarpal, my hand surgeon made it clear to me that finding a good occupational therapist and putting the work in would be critical to a full recovery. I admit I picked Dave for geographical convenience-- the Graybar Building is great for anyone who works near Grand Central Terminal-- but he did a great job keeping me motivated by measuring progress, setting goals, and making the therapy session as enjoyable as possible. He also did a good job checking in on daily exercises and giving me a variety of exercises to do to maximize compliance and progress. I went to GCPT for about 6 weeks following knee surgery and worked with Lisa. She was fantastic. Initially I couldn't even lift my leg off the table and I had very limited flexibility. She was very thoughtful and came up with a tailored program of exercises to strengthen my leg and get better flexibility. The exercises started simple (leg raises and stretches) and became more complex and harder over time (squats on a balance board). My knee has improved significantly - I have a lot more strength and almost a full range of motion. I have gone from limping around to walking normally. Lisa made the exercises and lot of fun and has a tremendous attitude. The other staff there are great. The receptionist was very helpful and tracked me down when I left something at their offices. I have had great results from my treatment at Grand Central Physical Therapy. I had developed pain and stiffness in my shoulder, and I couldn't lift my arm up very far. After weeks of hoping it would go away, I finally went to see a doctor about it. He diagnosed me with frozen shoulder and said that physical therapy would help. A co-worker recommended Grand Central Physical Therapy, and it was a good choice. Through a combination of joint glides and follow up exercises, my range of motion has improved a lot, and the pain has diminished. I also like the physical layout of the office - years ago I had physical therapy at a place that had cubicles with curtains for your treatment. I prefer the private rooms with doors that they have here. read more

David treated me for 12+ weeks and even after I am done with my PT I still go and say hello and David checks me out once a month. I have been to many PT's in the last 7 years and David was the best I have had. he is extremely knowledgeable, passionate and has helped me get back to the gym. This review is for Dave Ricci. I have just completed an intense rehab with Dave for tennis elbow. First, Dave was very comforting and believed that I could have a successful rehab. We worked hard for weeks. Dave was cautious and optimistic at the same time. He never rushed our sessions and steadily increased my activities until I recently was able to play golf pain free. This is the second major rehab with Dave (the first was for a complicated wrist injury). In both cases he was simply unbelievable. He is great. I saw Hector after tearing a muscle in my knee. I saw him twice/week for 5 weeks and the pain, discomfort and limitations of movement are almost totally resolved. He was excellent - knowledgeable, encouraging and solid. He gave me loads of tips on how to exercise more safely and how to make sure that my gym workouts would complement the home exercises he gave me. I can't imagine a better PT experience. I just completed my therapy for a torn bicep. I have had prior surgeries, and I have an established rapport with a different PT. I was hesitant to make a switch, but my doctor insisted that I use one of the specialists on his short list. I chose GCPT because of the great location near where I work.
