Booked a full day, 8hr, fishing trip with Grandslam fishing. Got there bright and early at 530am and we kinda felt like we were getting lectured to by the captain as a dad to his kids. Ok, it's really early, not everyone is a morning person and awake yet. No news on where we're heading out to. Captain goes up, backs us out, deckhand Shawn takes over to show us how to use the reel and rod. Several hours go by, no nibble, and still no idea where we're heading. At about 10am, we finally hook one and it's a waaay good size. Captain came down and preceded to stand behind us, telling us "don't screw this up" and that we need to work harder. About 15min later, we finally haul in a yellow fin tuna and it's huge, about 150lbs (so we were guesstimated) Photos taken, reels set, fish into the ice locker, we start trolling again. And... for the next 4hrs.... we troll and troll, with no other bites. Deckhand Shawn was good, he was entertaining and talkative. Captain seemed to spend the day being snide to him. Ok, we caught a big fish so I ask what about it since it says there'll be fish processing. We get told it's too big for him to process, that it'll be like cutting bubble gum, so it'll stay on ice until he can hock it at the fish market. But, if he gets around to it, he may process it and maybe give me an email to see if i want any of the meat. No further contact other than the bill. But, at the prices of yellowfin, side hocking 150lb fish would make bank. Basically, we spent $2,000 to catch a fish, take some photos, give it to the captain, and for him to sell for his pocket book. When we left, I made sure i handed a tip directly to Shawn. read more

Great experience in Hawaii!! Captain is super nice and very experienced. The boat is super cool with the interior and comfortable if u wanna take rest. We got 5-6 big one and lots of small fish. It's really fun and cool activity. Really recommend At the end of the tour, we asked captain if we would have a chance to see any sharks, then he took us there! Aloha! Captain Hopper and First Mate John are tremendous fisherman and set you up to have an exciting and fun day deep sea fishing. I highly recommend them. We just went on our second trip with them and totally scored - again! Yesterday's trip included our 4 teenage children. They put us on 28 Mahi Mahi and we landed 27!!! They were very helpful with the kids, teaching them how to improve their fishing skills. Our first trip was just the two of us for my husbands bday, and we caught 5 big Ahi - yellow fin tuna in October 2013. They run a tight and clean operation, the Grand Slam is a good boat, plenty if room for 6. And they've just installed two new engines, so no more stinky diesel fumes. Took a tour out with Captain Mark and enjoyed the day. We caught 4 Mahi Mahi and were able to take two big ziploc bags home full of fish. I tell you what, Fresh Mahi Mahi is the absolute best tasting in the world, as opposed to frozen fish. N-E ways the fishing charter was nice and sport fishing in hawaii is really popular because of the pacific blue marlin which is a prized catch amongst people in the industry. We had our hopes up but like any time you hunt there is no guarantee. So we didnt get that lucky blue marlin but everything else about the fishing charter was excellent. Captain marks boat is one of the better sized boats in the harbor so I would feel confident in referring his service to others, pricing was about the same as others too. aloha! read more

This costly experience was a total bust! 2,000 spent for one 150 pound yellow fin tuna almost saved the trip. But the captain who was a total jerk the whole trip ("Don't screw this up!" is actually what he yelled at us while two were puking off the side of the boat. He said the fish was too fresh to process and if he decided to process he would email us. His deckhand Shawn was great. We truly felt this experience was lackluster and not memorable even with that huge catch. I would avoid this company for sure!! read more

I went fishing on 10/18 with Hopper and John and had a fantastic experience. I've been fishing for big game all over the world since I was about 8. The Grand Slam was clean and the crew was experienced, personable, and professional. These guys clearly have good rapport with each other which makes a difference when you may only have one shot at hooking a big fish. Most first timers won't recognize little details of how they operate the boat and communicate when on the hunt, but they know exactly what they're doing. I've been on several charters over the years where we blanked, which does happen while fishing for big game, there are no guarantees. Even though we we're facing a goose egg all day and none of the other charters seemed to be hooking up, Hopper and John kept working hard switching up the spread and finding new areas to try. Eventually it paid off and we pulled a decent sized mahi on some live bait at the tail end of the day. Always nice to come home with something to show for a day on the water. My non-nautical friends back at the resort were thrilled to be eating the freshest fish of their life that night. I had an awesome time the entire day, I'll definitely be booking these guys again next time I'm on Oahu. Thanks! read more

At first I was a little hesitant of going on a fishing trip only because its a pretty pricey endeavor. I was able to convince my brother and friend to split the cost so that we can celebrate our sisters birthday. BEST decision ever!!! I have nothing but great things to say about our day out on the open ocean with Captain Hopper and Deckhand John. We caught eight Mahi Mahi's a few shibi's and a Wahoo. The highlight of the day was when my brother was reeling in the Wahoo and it decided to go on a flight about twenty feet in the air right in front of our boat. We soon pulled it on the boat and it kept jumping and flapping itself until John batted it with the club, what an amazing sight to see natures wildest animals in action. I was able to bring in three of the Mahis and although they don't fight as hard it was still a work out. The boat that we were able to go out on was the Grandslam its a big boat and accommodates the six of just fine, its perfect for sport fishing for big game, we had plenty of room to roam around and stretch our feet, I was even able to lay out and take a short 15min power nap. Captain Mark operates the GrandSlam out of Haleiwa harbor on the North Shore but when we arrived the morning of it was Captain Hopper that was behind the controls. We had learned that Captain Mark had an injury and was on leave for a while. Nevertheless we had a great time with a wonderful crew and awesome boat. We headed out just before sunrise (5:50am), it was myself along with three other friends and we were all excited to be fishing from a boat way out in the ocean. None of us have ever done deep sea fishing in our lives so the thrill and excitement began the night before and believe me it was a very very nerve racking time in anticipation of the launch time. The water was calm and very flat in the harbor and remained so as we headed beyond the shores of Haleiwa. We got out to the buoy and the crewman dropped some line to pull up some live bait. we used these smaller fish to bait the main trollers as we went out to sea. Wasnt long till we hit a school of Mahi mahi, Captain Hopper and the crew on the GrandSlam really displayed their expertise on this trip and the fish started to load up on the boat. before we knew it we had 5 mahi mahi all over 30 pounds. Later in the day we did latch on to a yellow fin and it was my turn to reel it in, these guys can fight, I was on the chair for a good 20 minutes and my arms felt like rubber. Thanks to the help of the crew I was able to bring that baby in all by myself, with some assistance ofcourse. Over all the day ended well and we had a blast. The boat is very comfortable and cozzy inside. Will do again! read more

I went fishing with 5 of my guy friends on the grand slam with Captain Hopper and John. It was so much fun and more exciting than i thought it would be. The weather was really bad so they offered us a half day rate and were really nice about it, staying out for the whole day would have been miserable! The captain and john were really nice and friendly and willing to answer all of our questions. We caught 2 Mahimahi and 1 Ono which Captain Hopper filleted when we got back to shore. One of my best memories on my Oahu vacation was spending the day on board the Grand Slam. I went with my son in laws and two of my grandchildren. I thought the boys were too young, especially my 8 year old. With the help of Captain Hopper and his right hand man Johnnie I was soon proven wrong. I have been lucky enough to fish on the Grand Slam with Captain Hopper and the crew more than once and have had the best fishing experiences of my life. The boat and all of its equipment are top notch, regularly maintained and always ready to go for any type of fishing or weather condition you can encounter. The amenities on the boat are also top notch with A/C, Wi-Fi, TV, Couches, at least 4 or more beds, bathroom, kitchen and a killer sound system so you're fishing in style. If the weather is bad you can sit in the cabin and watch people fish live from the couch in the A/C while you eat your lunch and have a drink. I was very impressed with the fishing equipment and how much knowledge Captain Hopper has in any condition. It's fun to hear the stories of the amazing fish they have caught and tournaments the crew have won in the past. You can never grantee catching fish, but luckily every single time I went we caught something good. One time, we caught a 275+ Blue Marlin and Captain Hopper got it in the boat all by himself no worries! The Grand Slam with Captain Hopper is the best fishing charter on Oahu you can get, hands down! I highly recommend this boat as your first choice and when you get to the dock for your first trip and see all the other options you had to choose from and you smile when you realize your boarding the best boat in the Harbor, you will thank me for this review.
