Awesome experience. Derek and Russel were an awesome team. Fishing was slow, but that's how it is. We landed 2 dorado and lost 3. Spent a few extra hours on the water hunting for trophy fish but nothing was hungry. Make sure you understand that Hawaiian fishing is different and almost all trolling. It's a long boat ride, but the payoff can be huge. Just don't expect to be filling up with bait and doing any flylining, it's more of a wait and see fame. Boat is very clean and well taken care of. I went out on this boat with my wife and her parents this past Tuesday. We had booked the full day exclusive charter +2 hours months in advance and met the crew at the harbor in Honolulu while it was still dark outside. Russell was the captain and a very nice but somewhat quiet guy. In addition to him we also had two deckhands on board to help with the fishing. The boat itself is a 50' Pacifica Sportfisher Yacht which had enough room outside for fishing and then had 2 bedrooms and plenty of space inside as well. After getting on the boat Russel asked us if we wanted to target the big guys or schools and we choose schools. After that we quickly headed out of the harbor and got our safety instructions and demonstrations. Our first stop was to find some bait balls and get some mackerel on board as live bait in case the lures were working on that day. The fishing for the makeral was to be done by the deckhands and while they pulled up a few fish, it was obvious that Russell wasn't happy with how they were biting for the day. I assumed it to be a bad omen but thankfully that wasn't the case. We eventually got to one of the places that he had targeted and with the live bait we quickly pulled up 11 Mahi Mahi one right after the other. It was like a game of musical chairs in the fighting chair because as soon as one was on the boat another was ready. They weren't exactly the biggest fish (maybe 8-14 lbs) but it was really nice for everybody to catch something. Once that was done we started going after the bigger fish for the day. Quickly after all the Mahi Action we had a Blue Marlin bite but he quickly got off the line. Thankfully not too long after that we got another bite and this one I was able to bring in. After a short but entertaining fight (I was on a lighter reel), we had the marlin on the boat (they already had a buyer lined up). It ended up being a 120 lb marlin and was absolutely massive. At this point we were maybe half way into our charter but things got a lot slower through the rest of the day. Even though we had already caught a ton of fish, the crew was constantly changing the lures hoping to get us that second marlin for the day. We only ended up having one more Marlin on and it got off the hook before we were able to fight it. Still, we stayed out for around 10 1/2 to 11 hours trying to catch that second marlin even though it never did happen. Whenever we got back to the dock we were able to hang up all of the fish and get photos with all of our catch. Even though in Hawaii the boat technically owns all of the catch and didn't have to share any with us, Russell ultimately allowed us to have the filets from two of the smaller Mahi Mahi. That was enough for two meals for our group of 4 and it was greatly appreciated. The bottom line for me is that I would recommend Magic Sportfishing to anyone looking for a good fishing charter in the Honolulu area. This was my first deep sea fishing experience EVER. After living in Hawaii for 3 wonderful years it was clear that I just had to do it. We booked a private charter and we were not disappointed. From start to finish the crew and captain were such a delight. We had a group of 6 people and every single one of us felt that it was a very personable experience. The water was a little rough and we had a few people that were on the sea sick side but the mike and braddah were amazing. They made sure that we were well taken care of. The boat is equipped with a bathroom, clean and spacious cabin and a full kitchen. We were able to move around the boat with no issue. First stop was to catch bait fish and we most certainly did. After that we headed to the high seas for some fishing. We stayed on the west side and cruised until captain found us birds! (Birds mean fish!) in no time we had fish on! Three fish on at once and that was quite a ride!!! Not 5 minutes later we had 2 more on! We were able to catch 5 total skipjack tuna! This was awesome! The crew kept the boat in pristine condition and made sure that everything was safe. It was great we didn't have to do anything other than enjoy the ride and catch some fish! On the way back we spotted a couple of whales which was such a treat! When we got back we requested to only take one fish back which they gladly cut for us. My dad and I went fishing yesterday with captain Russel and his 2 deckhands. We did a full day charter, and we had the best time. We caught a blue marlin (130 lbs), 4 striped marlin (60-85 lbs) , and a yellowfin tuna (80lbs) ! The captain and crew were extremely knowledgeable and helpful through out the whole trip. HIGH SEAS ROBBERY!! WHAT A RIPOFF!!! If I could rate them a Zero I would. Three of my friends and I paid approximately $1300 for this fishing trip. We were asked if we wanted trophy fishing or if we wanted to fish for food. We wanted to fish for food! We caught 20 fish all weighing 35+ pounds each. That was about 700 pounds of fish. There were 2 workers and we gave them a $300 tip. We didn't have an issue with that. I was in disbelief when we docked and were each given a baggie with a slice of ACU (Skipjack tuna) that weighed approximately 2 pounds. We were informed the CHARTER COMPANY KEEPS THE CATCH?!?!? **Start to finish an absolute class act** I decided to go on a fishing charter last minute and after looking at reviews and checking out boats I connected with the Magic Sports Fishing Charter. First off I called and spoke with Tracey and she helped square me away, she was extremely helpful and even took my call while she was in transit. Tracey confirmed there was "1 more slot" so we booked it. I received an email confirmation following my payment which outlined all the details for our full day trip (location, arrival time, food, etc). Once I showed up the crew was ready to rock and roll, led by Capt. Russell and First Mate Mike. Russell and Mike both educated us about safety on the boat as well as how the day will proceed (hooking a fish, reeling, etc). The crew was phenomenal during the high and low points of the day. During those high points you can quickly forget everything they told you at 5am while you have a fish on . Throughout the day Russell kept us on the fish, constantly eye balling for birds, movement on the water and talking to his network of fishermen. He says he's still looking for a job after 42 years of fishing but he's found not only a great business and hobby but a great crew to run the operation. The boat is in absolute tip top shape and during those low points we were able to play cards at the table, watch tv, listen to the radio and take a nap in one of the two bunks they have in the galley. Fish on!!!! We went out on Sunday 7/30/17 and this trip was nothing short of perfection!! We did a full day trip and we caught 5 fish including a 145 lbs Marlin and 4 Mahi-mahi. The boat is very clean and well maintained. Fishing gear is top of the line. To top this for our fishing trip we were greeted by the crew...Captain Toots, and deck hands Mike and Eric. These guys were so on it, making our day go smooth, enjoyable and did I mention..."we caught fish"...let's face it that don't always happen and that's why they call it Magic. We had a great experience with Magic Sport Fishing! We chartered their best boat - Magic. This was the best boat I have ever been on! It was big with 2 bedrooms, 4 beds, a sitting area with a table to eat and a couch. It was a comfortable ride. I also like the bathroom.. (important for girls!) We had Captain Russell. It was just a bad day for fishing... but let me tell you.. he tried his best to find the fish for us. We trolled out 4 hours away from land... he took us out for about 11 hours. Way more than we paid for. He didn't want to quit until we caught something.. but sometimes it's just the way it goes. Nobody on the island caught anything that day... so it wasn't us. If you are a wife or significant other who is less than thrilled about accompanying your loved one on this trip, I highly recommend giving it a shot. You can definitely make a great day of it. Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised at how fun it is! ;-) My husband and I left for this all day fishing excursion before the sun was up. Coffee in hand, we headed to the most beautiful fishing boat. It was so clean, and the crew made us feel so comfortable. First they checked our food bags for banana products (which we thought we did, but clearly not well) and confiscated a juice that contained banana. haha. Thank God they did, because, from the sounds of the radio talk from other boats and chatter on the dock upon return, it sounded like we had a pretty successful trip out compared to some other boats on the water that day. I have to admit, I wasn't super excited to go fishing all day, but it was amazing! Once we were settled onboard, they let me nap in one of the cabins while the crew caught bait fish. My hubby was way too excited and caffeinated to sleep. ;-) Throughout the day, we saw whales, porpoises, dolphins, and fish of course. The boat was so clean and nice, and we had great music to enjoy. Plus, we got to see the beautiful view of the Oahu coast from the water. The crew members were fun to talk to. Also, I felt this rush of adrenaline every time we had a fish trailing us. So much anticipation after waiting great lengths of time for a fish... When my husband was battling his first fish, it was too big and soon become 'the one that got away.' He caught his second fish, which was so exciting! It was an absolutely beautiful striped marlin. And I thought I would be sad about the head beating, but it was quick and discrete enough to not bother me. Next, it was my turn. I thought I would need a lot of help, but I did great reeling it in. It was an arm workout, but they helped coach me and were patient when I wasn't great about guiding the line evenly. I was soooo proud of my wahoo, or 'ono' as they call it in Hawaii. One of my favorite things was hanging out up top, sipping wine from my coffee cup with breathtaking views of the surroundings and a front row view of the action on deck. So peaceful! We got back to the deck and took awesome pics for bragging rights. Then, they helped us get set up with having our striped marlin prepped to be wall mounted. We also got to take some yummy wahoo/'ono' filets with us, which we enjoyed eating for the remainder of our trip. My husband loved the experience and also bought a t-shirt from them. Captain can't change whether fish bite or not, but he sure can change tactics to keep the guests entertained. I've never seen so many people sleep this much on a charter since the titanic. After reading some good reviews online we have decided to charter the Magic Sport Fishing yacht for all day shared trip on January 14, 2011. There were four of us and each paid $200 for a total of $800. Another guy joined us to share the trip as 5th person. We arrived at 5:20 am and met Gary (crew-fisherman) on the peer. Few minutes later an older man with angry face came out and without introducing himself asked "Who is paying??" We paid via credit card and he said to board the boat. Apparently, he was a captain Tuts... The Magic Sport Fishing yacht is a 30-year old boat in decent shape however there were beer boxes in the sleeping room, the blankets and pillows were worn and dirty; the toilet had a strong smell of urine, etc. To make a long story short we sailed from 5:30 am to around 4:30 pm without catching any real fish... Gary has caught several smaller fish (bites) on the way to West Oahu but he did not allow us to touch the fishing rods... We have opened a window in the seating area as it was hot but the captain screamed at us "Close the window!!! Close the window!!!" The crew was very rude and it looked like they are by themselves trying to catch a fish and make few bucks... Absolutely no interaction with customers who paid them $1,000. We've heard several other screams like: "Don't touch the bite!", "Don't crank!", "Don't seat here! Don't do this and don't do that!"... There was a case with binocular in the seating area. A friend of mine asked Gary if he can use the binocular. Gary responded with "No, don't touch it. It cost $6,000!" We are very disappointed and felt very uncomfortable during the so called "fishing trip". It was a total waste of time and money. Because of such bad experience we do not recommend Magic Sport Fishing to anyone. read more

There was a Swedish tourist gal who caught a 125lb Marlin and another guy caught a Mahi Mahi. Good day fishing! Didn't get to take any of the Marlin or Ahi - anything over 100lbs goes to auction. Very disappointed in this charter company the 100 lbs or less is garbage, it's pretty much a racket, we paid 1200 dollars to pretty much fish commercially for ahi tuna. If you wanna be a green horn and reel in their money for them and pay them to do it, then this is the place to go. Went to Honolulu to hang out with a friend for a few days. We contacted Sportfish Hawaii.com and asked about shared charters. Having never been to Hawaii, they were very friendly and helpful. We reserved two spots and were told we'd be going on the Magic or the Kalele. When we called to confirm, it was the Magic. We'd heard great things about the Magic but were unsure about the weather. I sportfish frequently out of Southern California and just wanted to get into some fish. When we showed up at the dock, it was a bit breezy and dark. The other members of the shared party brought 5 people and the boat only holds 6. It ended up being me and my buddy and 3 guys from Washington State. Went out for about and hour and spent a while catching bait. The captain was Toots and the deckhand was Gary. Hilarious guy that Gary. Anyways, he explained the rules and gave out the numbers. One of the guys from Washington never stepped out of the bunks or galley. He was sick the entire time. Another guy from their party came out, looked miserable, puked into a bucket, caught two mahi mahi and promptly stayed in for the rest of the trip. Since only 1 guy from Washington was left, we just rotated catching fish with him. It was a blast. Ended up with 15 mahi mahi fishing on Saturday the 24th of March, 2012. None of the other boats did that well numberwise although we heard the Maggie Joe sp? caught a 500lb marlin. Don't get me wrong...a huge marlin woulda been a blast....for one person...for a few hours....give me quantity anytime when it comes to something like that. My buddy James lost the biggest fish of the day....was a bull dorado that woulda been at least 40 lbs. We caught a few ranging from 12-25lbs. It was great! Would definitely go again and I highly recommend this boat and crew. As a side note, these guys sell the fish for a living but don't be afraid to tip if you enjoy the service. I left $40 initially on my $200 ticket but after seeing the other party stiff the boat, I left another $20. Take care of the crew because they'll take care of you no matter what. read more

HANDS DOWN the best sport fishing charter out of Honolulu. Captain Russell and his crew deliver time and time again. My son and I fished with them first in 2018 and Russell did not rest until we were on the fish! Trophy short billed spearfish AND all we could enjoy sashimi from smaller fish for the family as well. We booked a full day private charter. Immediately could tell we were a little "disregarded" as tourists. We were not involved in a single thing. Not baiting a line, not putting lines in the water, NOTHING. We were isolated and completely ignored for about 99% of the day. After trolling for about 6 hours with not a single bite the deck hand attempted to put two different kind of lures on. Nothing. At one point we came to a school of Mahi Mahi. Deckhand reels in lines, hooks frozen bait onto two fishing poles, hands one to the captain on top of the boat and takes the other one for himself up to the top and they fish.....while we continue to sit. We were not included on anything, not taught anything not allowed to do anything. It was a bummer. On the way back to the dock we got our first bite by a marlin. My son immediately went to the chair, deckhand came down but the boat kept trolling too fast. Within 2 minutes it had broke off. That was it. Only bite in 10 hours. While I know you cannot control fish biting or not, I felt that little effort was put into finding us fish or getting us a great experience. We were there to learn, to work to fish. We sat and watched and that was it. It was not a fishing experience at all. It was a watch other people fish experience. They need to improve making this an experience about the guests and not a day for the captain and deckhand to fish for themselves. We were so uninvolved it was a waste of a lot of money. read more

Had a blast on the play n hooky. Forgot the captains name but the deck hand opi was awesome along with the cap. Did a full day trip and caught 2 mahi mahis and 1 stripped Marlin. I highly recommend magic. My first time deep sea fishing and it won't be my last. read more
