Nico, Rubin, and our amazing haul.

Five Star Sportfishing provided us with the most phenomenal fishing adventure in my husband's 75 years of living. We landed on some amazing fish, due in part to luck (Oahu is not know for marlin fishing), but mostly due to the skill and attentiveness of Capt. Rubin and First Mate Nico. Being warned that fishing out of Honolulu had been slow, we did indeed have a slow start catching bait fish. And then the fishing story of a lifetime transpired. Rubin set out in search of marlin that had started showing up off of Honolulu. We ended up with two double-hookups, netting three blue marlin, a striped marlin, and three dorado. My arm was killing me!!! So much reeling!!! And yet, nothing approaching a complaint. All four of us were ecstatic pulling into the harbor with seven flags flying! With all that activity and action, Rubin and Nico were right on top of their game. Masters!!!

Dallas was our captain and his crew were absolutely amazing in what they do!! They caught live bait and we ended up catching 6 marlins and one barracuda. Probably the best fishing trip by far. Book them, it will be soo worth it!! Shooooots

I highly recommend the Ruckus Charter Fishing Boat, Captain, and Crew! They were highly recommended to us by another Charter company in Florida and I can see why. The Captain, Rubin, was very knowledgeable and knew the areas to go find the blue marlin. His assistant First Mate, Pat, put in a lot of hard work as well putting out all the bait on the lines and switched them around to get the fish coming out from hiding. We actually hooked 3 yesterday but only one stuck on the line. It was exciting and such an adrenaline rush to bring in that marlin! We took photos and let the beautiful fish go. Afterward, my now fiancé surprised me and asked me to marry him! Rubin and Pat were in on the set up that I had NO CLUE about! It was a wonderful time on the boat and I look forward to coming back for another trip with them to catch some more fish! Thank you to Rubin and Pat to make this such a memorable and awesome trip!!

Five star sportfishing is indeed 5 stars!!! Rubin the captain and Nico (the first mate) were super accommodating and friendly, making our fishing trip as memorable and amazing as possible. Nico was so good at setting up the fish lines, and Captain Rubin certainly had finesse with what he does. He definitely worked at it to follow the birds to ensure that our likelihood to hunt down the fish. So two mahi mahi caught the lure and we managed to bring home a 44-lbs mahi mahi. Captain Rubin was excellent to clean up the mahi mahi and we went home happy with some fillets! Nico was very friendly and patient, and made sure that we had a good time on the boat. The boat was nice and spacious, the top deck was a nice place to sit and lounge with a bean bag for chilling! Even though it was raining and storming in the morning, the rain stopped and it was the perfect day out at sea. Thank you Five Star Sportfishing, Captain Rubin & Nico. You sure made our day!! We will be back!

I went with Ruckus on Sep 15th. It was so much fun. I slept a lot, but I was wide awake once there was an Aku on the line. I was too afraid to reel it in myself but it was fun to watch others do. They ended up reeling in 2 large Aku. The Captain was really nice. He gave me all sorts of tips about looking for fish on the open water. It's a good sized boat so it was steady. No sea sickness at all. I slept on the couch in the cabin for about 30 minutes and later on the floor. The boat was clean so I didn't worry about passing out on the ground. I brought my own food and water but folks were really friendly so we shared most things. It was fun. Next time I will do the reeling. Thanks Ruckus!!!!

My uncle wanted to do some deep sea fishing while visiting Honolulu, so I called John at 5 Star. I didn't know anything about how going out on a boat works, but John explained that they need at least 4 people (shares) to make it happen. So my brother-in-law, husband and his friend booked a full day trip. They loved it! It was an educational experience for the non-fishermen, and second hat for my Uncle, who fishes in NC. It helped that he caught a (30 pound?) mahi-mahi, pictured. After giving some to the captain and crew, they brought home about half of that - which we froze. We just ate some last night. A couple of things they mentioned to me, after: You take turns sitting in the pole position. They drew straws and decided each of the 4 would sit until they caught a fish then surrender their seat to the next person. But only one fish was caught which meant only 2 of them actually had the experience. In hindsight, they would have taken timed shifts. Take your dramamine: both before you go to bed and before you get on the boat. You never know how rocky it will be out there. My brother-in-law got sick (he only took one dose of dramamine the night before). It's also a lot of waiting for something to happen... luckily something did. So be prepared to spend time gazing at the water, and just appreciating the experience for what it is. Fish don't always bite. Some people do walk away without catching anything. As John explained, it's seasonal and sometimes it's "feast or famine". That's why I booked a day long to make sure they had a fighting chance at hooking a fish. All my Uncle wanted was a mahi-mahi from Hawaii. He got it :) Thanks for the great memories 5 Star.

2nd Blue Marlin

5 star sportsman is definitely worth the five star review. Isaac was hilarious, kept on top of the lines, and helped my brother and I reel in two massive Blue Marlins. I would highly recommend having Isaac and Vick as part of your crew if you go deep sea fishing. By far one of our best experiences in Hawaii!

Got them through the Hawaii deep sea fishing and was given excellent service. The crew team Reuben and Gabe provided an amazing experience. My group was able to catch a fish each and had a chance at a marlin. Definitely a great time.

Whereas other shops wanted to charge me for a full on course, Captain Maddie set me up with her dive-master sister, Ashley. Ashley did a refresher on our way out then made sure I had a great, safe experience for my first time back in the water, taking me on two shallow reef dives. We saw so many turtles, eels, a shark and several octopuses (Ashley has an incredible eye for spotting them). I had such a great time I booked another dive. This time, noting my comfort level, Ashley took me on two deeper wreck dives. They were spectacular. I'm so grateful I found Ruckus, Maddie and Ashley. There are a ton of options for diving on Oahu and I really lucked out choosing them. The personal focus the sisters gave me both times was above and beyond. I can't wait to come back to Hawaii and go diving with them again and again.

Parking is available near the boat for a pay by hour cost using one of two apps. Their timeline for return was accurate, and we even got to a point of being out where we had enough and were ready to return a little early. Bathrooms are available in a nearby building with key from the boat, or on the boat itself. A majority of the people on the boat took motion sickness medicine prior to the trip to avoid any issue. It was consistent waves the whole trip with no stopping so be prepared. The boat has a covered area with table and seats, along with air conditioning and fans. We brought some snacks and a cooler with drinks and food that we put out on the table for all to consume as desired. The crew put the lines in the water for the large fish which we didn't catch any of. Apparently the reel spins when a fish is on the line and you jump on it to reel it in. I've never been sport fishing to know the feeling of reeling one in or seeing one reeled in. After some time waiting for something to hit and everyone getting tired, they put the smaller poles in the water and allowed people to hold them trolling. This is how we caught the fish we did catch that ranged in size from probably 12-20". They put up a little fight and we lost a few along the way that could've been much larger but we'll never know. Upon return, a neighbor boat gave us a 25 lb fish they caught since the crew was cleaning our catch. I don't eat fish but my wife is very happy with what we brought home. The crew was very helpful in trying to provide a pleasurable experience by helping with the poles, advising, and cleaning fish to take home. Overall a great experience and we would likely return hoping to catch something larger.

I've been dropping by every time we're back on the islands for over 20 years, and it's still the first stop off the plane. I will say though, service can be a little rough sometimes. Some days are good, some days not so much. But honestly, that's never been the point of this place. You're not coming here for some polished haole sales pitch of some sort, you're coming because these guys know what they're doing and they'll get you what you need so you can get back in the water. And that's where they really shine. Need a j tube? They've got it. Need a new band? They can fab it up in like 5 minutes so you can still make it to the spot on time. They almost always have exactly what I need in stock and at a fair price. You'll see some of the best divers in the islands and honestly, some of the best in the world just casually stopping in. The shirts and designs are also totally underrated. They've got their own local style and I've of course picked up a few over the years and they hold up good. Hanapa'a is one of those rare functional places you can always rely on. it's rooted in the community, and it delivers when it counts. If you dive, you already know. If you don't, this is where you start. Just don't be a Karen and you'll be good.

Avoid This Tour - Unprofessional and Poorly Managed I had a…read morevery disappointing experience with this fishing tour and would strongly advise others to avoid it. First, the check-in address provided in the confirmation email was outdated. I followed the instructions, took an Uber to the listed location, and only discovered it was wrong after calling the company. I then had to take another Uber to their actual location to make it on time. This kind of logistical error is unacceptable and shows a lack of basic communication. When I finally arrived, I was told I needed to pay an additional $2 due to some law. That would've been fine -- if it had been mentioned anywhere in the confirmation email. Worse, they only accepted cash, or required a minimum $10 purchase to use a card. I didn't have cash on me, and when I asked if I could Venmo, the front desk staff rudely repeated that it was "cash only." When I asked where in the email this was mentioned, he falsely claimed it was included -- but when I showed him the email and asked him to point it out, he avoided the question and repeated the same line. There was no apology, just a cold attitude. In the end, other kind tourists helped us out of the situation -- not the staff. As for the tour itself: the instruction was minimal. When I asked how I would know if there was a bite, I was simply told, "You'll know it," with no further explanation. My fishing spot was poorly placed -- right in the middle of one side of the boat -- and with the wind, my line kept getting blown underneath. I kept recasting, but it didn't help. Eventually, a staff member tried fishing from the same spot and caught nothing either. Clearly, this was a bad spot for fishing in those conditions, but they assigned it anyway. Overall, this tour was disorganized, poorly managed, and left a very bad impression. Save your money and book a tour with a more professional, courteous company.

First, when I was scheduling this fishing trip, they told us that we would be able to keep some of the fish that we caught, they told me that they would offer a discount once we got there and they gave us the location to meet . We showed up at the meeting location and my family along with three other families were waiting. We called the company and found out that they changed the meeting spot. So we had to walk 30 minutes to the next location which, they said if we didn't make it in time they were going to leave without us, they told us that it was catch and release, and they would no longer offer us a discount. Once we were on the boat there were about 22 people and maybe seven fish were caught, the workers were all fishing instead of trying to help us catch fish. I was very disappointed.
