The attorney for the estate of which I am co-executor suggested Big Apple to empty the contents of…read moremy deceased friend's apartment. The principal of the firm, Harold Katz, showed up in overalls and seemed unimpressed with what he saw. My late friend was a frail 98-year-old, and her apartment was cluttered with belongings and mementos. The fellow quoted me a fair price for the apartment contents, to which the attorney and my co-executor agreed. The Big Apple crew arrived on a Monday morning to begin work, since I had to drive in to the location from my home in New Jersey, I asked when he thought they would be done. I was told by end-of-day that Wednesday. He handed me a check for the agreed price of the cleanout. I arranged my schedule so that I could get there late in the afternoon, walking down from further uptown. When I was about 15 minutes away I left a voicemail with Harold saying I was coming. I had expected someone to pick up, but no one did. I called the building superintendent, to tell him I was almost there. The super told me that the crew had left for the day some 2 hours ago, and had not finished--they would be back Thursday morning. I found this a bit upsetting, since a simple phone call would have saved me a lot of bother. The next day, I had two medical appointments in my area of Northern New Jersey, and errands to run that I had put off from Wednesday. About 2 PM, I received a call from the crew supervisor at the apartment. They were packing up to leave - did I want to stop in for a final walkthrough in about a half hour? I explained that I was between two doctors' appointments, and could not drop everything to "stop in" -- since driving back in would take another 45-60 minutes at a minimum. He had no explanation why they hadn't finished the day before -- or why no one had called to tell me that not-so-minor fact. He took photos of all the areas and closets in the apartment to serve as my walkthrough. It wasn't until my next visit to the premises that I noticed that Harold had instructed his crew to remove a small chandelier light fixture from the ceiling of the apartment dining area, leaving the wiring hanging from its place. There is a reason it's called a "fixture" - and it should not legally have been removed. I had to spend several hundred dollars to purchase and install a replacement. I would not recommend Big Apple Antiques. Yes, they paid the money to the Estate and did the work -- they even removed the roller for the toilet paper from its spot in the bathroom (Heaven knows why). But I felt the whole matter was handled off-handedly and unprofessionally.
