Just returned from a week at the Grand Victorian, Unit 209. Loved the location, the building, and on-site staff. Unfortunately, was very disappointed with the unit owner(s) and one bed in particular. On our first day, we arrived to find a shard of glass on the rug in the kitchen. Having four small children staying with us and also having paid the obligatory cleaning fee, we were very disappointed to find a piece of broken glass (obviously no one had taken the time to vacuum). I was later told the unit owner does the cleaning herself, not shocking news. Additionally, the water dispenser on the fridge was broken, a light bulb blown out, and several screws loose or missing on legs of the chairs and end tables. Also, in order to cool the left bedroom, the right bedroom has to turn into a meat locker. If you turn the a/c down to bring the right bedroom to a normal cool temp., you sweat in the left bedroom. All relatively small things that we decided to overlook in the interest of trying to relax. After vacuuming, replacing the bulb (there were extras in the unit), and finding/tightening the screws with a screwdriver I luckily had in the car, we finally began our vacation. Unfortunately, that night I literally sank into the bed. Apparently, the box spring is/was broken. I brought this to the attention of Apex Realty, the rental agent, first thing the next morning. She was diplomatic about it, agreed there was something wrong after sitting on the bed herself, and offered an air mattress while they tried to contact the unit owner. I'm not sure about any of you, but I was very disappointed (to put in nicely) in the thought of sleeping on an air mattress for $3k/week. Since the agent seemed nice, we again decided to let things go for the time being and try to enjoy the vacation. 2 days and about a dozen motrin later, no direct word from the owner. Just a set of cheap wine glasses dropped with the front desk along with a note, "Thanks for understanding, the Hogans". Day 6 and still no direct word from the owner, no new box spring, and no offer to reimburse any money for our discomfort, so I call the agent again. I make what I believe to be a very reasonable request - I paid $3k for the week for four beds or $750 per bed. Giving the owner the benefit of the doubt that maybe they were unaware of the problem, I offer to split the difference and ask for a $350-$375 refund. No response from the unit owner, just from the agent that they haven't heard back but that they can offer me a great deal on a rental for next year if I book now. Last day, day 7, see the agent around the building and again am told sorry, but they still haven't heard back from the owner. Receive same offer to rent again next year. I'm home now and just heard back from the agent on what would be day 10. The owner refused to refund any money whatsoever and basically did not acknowledge the issue. Oh, but if I book with the agent now for next year, they can give me a really good price - if that's any consolation. Thanks, but no thanks. Just as a caveat, I'm told they own more than one unit. And if you're another schmuck in 209 and the bed is still broken, the air mattress is in the closet - Don't bother asking for a refund. read more
