I ordered 7 different wires from west marine. The ordering process was very easy although when I…read morerecieved my package, I found out that one of my wires was cut at 3ft, and the other 27ft would arrive another day, I ordered it as a solid 30ft strand. I contacted customer service about the issue and they sent my money back for the 1 strand that was cut. The next day I recieved most of the other wire that I needed. The other wires were packaged as if they had no concept of handling wire. None of it was rolled up, it looked like they had just shoved it inside the box and called it good. I spent well over an hour going through all of the other wire and de-tangling it. I will be measuring it to see if they actually sent me the correct length of wire because I doubt that they did. I added pictures of what the mess of wire looked like. Instead of them taking 30 seconds to coil the wire while they pulled it off the reel and taping it, they did this....

I called Taylor Made as it was not holding air for more than 2 days. Taylor offered for me to buy a repair kit for a 115 dollar bumper and fix it myself. Not great service at all by Taylormade. So, I went back to West Marine and the team there was very helpful and exchanged the unit for a new one. If not for their honorable approach to doing business, I would have purchased another brand.

I've been here at J&M Tackle on Canal Road a number of times over the years, but I got to be honest…read moreit's not normally my first stop. My neighborhood bait shop usually has what I need for most my fishing trips, and J&M is a 20-minute drive in the opposite direction from where I normally fish on the Gulf or Bob Secour River. Still, when my local place comes up short or I need something specific, J&M is where I go. The place is a big resource for us anglers with a massive selection of gear, from live bait and frozen shrimp to rods, reels, lures, and fishing clothes. They even have stuff like pier nets and sandals, which I've actually picked up before. The staff indeed know their stuff and is always ready to help. One time, I was looking for a better setup for surf fishing, and a guy there walked me through some options for pompano rigs. He didn't push me toward the expensive stuff, just pointed out what would work for the kind of fishing I do. I ended up with a couple jigs and a new line that did the job. I've also had them fix a couple of rods for me. Last spring, my go-to rod got banged up pretty bad and the tip was shot, and I that it might be done for. I took it to J&M's rod shop, in the back, where they build custom rods. The person I talked to asked about how I used it and what happened, then said they could repair it. About a week later, I got it back, and it was good as new with a rebuilt tip. The repair cost was a little more than I hoped, but it saved a rod I didn't want to replace, and it wasn't that crazy. I wouldn't say J&M blows me away, like Bass Pro Shop, but It's absolutely a solid tackle shop with a lot to offer, and the biggest around. The staff is friendly and quick to answer questions, whether I'm asking about what's biting or how to tweak my gams for redfish, trigger, flounder, etc. The place is organized, and I like that they carry brands I know plus some new ones I've tried out. I've been to other shops around, and J&M has more options than the rest, period. Beyond fishing gear, some of the fishing clothes, like the fancy shirts, can be a bit overpriced. But for tackle and gear, the prices are fair, and I've never left empty-handed. In addition they have gas, diesel and non-lead fuels for your boats!! Bottomline: J&M Tackle is a reliable spot when I need more than my local shop can offer. If you're in Orange Beach and serious about fishing, it's worth a visit for the gear and the know-how. Review is only for paint dept. Maintenance dept has been great…read more The paint dept. is terrible! Took over a year to paint the boat. Had a couple of windows removed and resealed, all of the window exterior caulk was removed and replaced. The paint has had pin head size blisters come up all over, they wet sanded until there can't be much paint left and I am still finding new spots. After 3 tries to get the caulk on the windows to look good and stop flaking off they have stopped returning my messages. The 2 windows they reinstalled look as bad now as they did before. If the project had been free it would not have been worth it. The pump out hasn't worked in quite a while and the last time I tried to get fuel neither diesel pump worked. Everything takes longer than it should and some of the staff gives the impression customers are their biggest inconvenience, other staff are just plain rude. The paint shed has no doors, so... not really a shed in my opinion. Even if it did between the rust, bird and bug droppings that come from the ceiling they'd be better off painting outside. If you are looking for a substandard project and like doing business with people you can't count on, cuss and scream at each other and customers with unreliable facilities... this is your place.

If you need a professional sign or you need your Avon, Bombard, West Marine, Zodiac, Caribe, etc. fixed, go see this man! He's also very frank and honest: for example, he recommended to us that we simply scrap the entry-level Zodiac dinghy we had (it has a wooden transom that has started to rot), rather than spend almost-replacement-price on fixing the transom, only to likely have something else go wrong as the dinghy ages past its normal expected lifetime! Now that is a secure man -- he knows his worth and that people will come pounding on his door to have him fix their boats, certain he will be honest with them even if it means he gives up a "sale." Long may he thrive!
