    Making memories at Grandfather Campground

The good, the bad and the not so ugly. I have stayed here in our 32 ft class C camper ohhhh maybe 6 times over the last year. It a really nice place. The Good: staff are helpful and friendly, it is well kept, each site has a fire pit? Many sites are creekside. Many sites have a nice view above, several kinds of affordable cabins that I had not stayed it but look great and are in a good location within the campground. The place is quite a d is located in a great place in Banner Elk. It is big rig friendly, dependable hook-ups (the RV kind that is, I am married). A lot of great looking tent sites also creekside, stocked camp store with the essentials, wifi, and so on. The bad: the firewood they sell should be avoided. Its wet despite being stored in a small shed, Limited in quantity and there is a walmart, Lowes or some streetside spots that sell a much better product. I bought it twice and now buy local. There is no pool but they do have a small playground. There really is no ugly. Give it a try.

I intended on tent style camping in the middle of winter so I was very easy to please and the accommodations were just what I needed. Originally I was on a tent site across from the river but during the week the snow melted and made a mess of things. The attendant was very nice allowing me to change (upgrade) my site which had better drainage and was right on the river. The place is beautiful. Road noise was amplified by the valley walls so you could pick up on most cars passing by. Not much can be done about that. The wash house was always clean, warm and had hot running water. Price was right too. If you are not looking for the Sheraton, this is your place. by the way, they also have cabins.

We love this campground. We love the location, we love the camp sites, we love the staff. I don't think I could speak higher of a campground. The only thing I would complain about is the bathrooms. I know, it's camping and I should be thankful that there's running water but a little bit of better up keep is all I ask. The doors on the stalls closing properly or maybe spraying for bugs every now and then. Other than that I think it's great. I especially am thankful they allow dogs. Our dingo loved checking out the creek and watching people go by. If you're in Boone or headed to Grandfather Mountain camp here!

We rented an RV spot along with a one bedroom cabin to celebrate my mom's birthday. The campsite is on a hill but every spot is flat and level. The cabin was not the cleanest but with some Lysol wipes within 20 minutes we felt right at home. We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist. My father got in before us and although we were paying for their RV rental the receptionist allowed my dad to go ahead and set up she was very nice and accommodating. Depending on the RV site or the cabin you rent will depend on the type of do you have. There are spots along the river but there are no reviews of the hills. The RV spots and cabins away from the river are up a hill with a beautiful view. Even the tent sites have a nice view. Nice place I did not give it 5 stars as the cabins was a bit on the dirty side and the RV spots were a bit close together I am certain we will return...

    Great Campsite!

Staying at The Grandfather Mountain Campground was a wonderful experience. We were able to make reservations with ease. We arrived at night and it was a challenge placing the camp in our lot. After leveling the camper and unpacking a few things we turned in. The next morning we woke us to a beautiful and peaceful part of this great world created for us. The Watauga River flowed behind the camper and we enjoyed breakfast by the water. I truly enjoyed the entire experience. The staff was welcoming and very helpful.

Nice campground. Only complaint is that it's quite close to the highway so you are hearing car noises all night.

We love the location and the campsites are nice. However, the bathrooms are dirty and need some serious maintenance.

We had to go back through a neighborhood to find the right spot, and we waited for, the camp to bring us to our site. The coffee shop was a nice feature, but we were disappointed that it wasn't open on our way out of town Sunday. We understand why it's closed on Sundays, but the coffee shop, also being open to the public, should be open on Sundays if they're going to use this as a selling feature for coming to Big Mike's. The parking pads are a decent size and we had one right on the river. Since we were there in October, there wasn't a whole lot to do especially in the creek. It was evident at the time that big Mike was still working on expanding and building his dream RV park. The open area field is perfect for families so kids can run around or play ball. Overall, it was clean and the shower facilities were one of the best we'd experienced on our travels. We highly recommend big Mike's RV Resort!

Not any equipment or construction was taking place. When approached by Robbie, we asked if we could continue on, he said yes, which we did. My original comment stands about the terrible confidence and treatment of campers at this campsite again if you'd like to be on the edge and be criticized and watched over every second of the day to be pounded by the representatives of d deserve Downbythe river, a lot of go ahead and stay there. I have no recommendations for you for this campsite. It is, as mentioned unfriendly hosts. I have been a safety director for many years And there was NO safety issue. In fact I had noticed several OSHA violations at this campsite which I have not yet sent to the NC DOL.

Plenty of nice trees provide shading with plenty of grass instead of dirt or muddy areas. They have a covered social area on the creek with nice big fireplace. This seems to be a gathering spot at night. Several rocking chairs to pull in front of the fireplace and relax. The area itself is very convenient to a lot of NC Mountain landmarks. The Blue Ridge Parkway is approx. 1.5 miles away, Linville Falls is a 10-12 minute drive, Linville Caverns is a 20 minute drive, Grandfather Mountain approx. 20 minutes, and Tweetsie Railroad is about 35 minutes. Bottom line is this is a very nice family campground, friendly staff, and great location. We have now visited twice and will be back.

This campground is old (circa 1970) but I rather call it nostalgic, it's an old school campground which means it's a little cramped and filled with a little bit of every kind of campers and full timers but I was able to navigate the steep entrance, small driveways and our tight site in my 41' Class A Diesel Rig without disconnecting my toad yes I have skills and a navigator in the seat next to me. The good far outweighs any negative comments I've read, this campground is nestled in a serene setting next to a mountain stream, there are lots of trees that filters the sun light most of the day. We stayed in site 77 a very level asphalt site that was long enough and wide enough to accommodate our Motorhome and our toad. Everyone here was extremely friendly and when the sun sets the sound of cracklin camp fires and the smell of burning hardwood fills the air. As far as ambient goes you'd be hard pressed to find a better setting it's only a few miles from town but a million miles from the distractions of the outside world. The not so good, yes every place has a few of them - the water pressure was horrible but fortunately my onboard water pump supplemented this so it wasn't that painful. The electrical supply was a shared distribution box and it was on the opposite side of the utility panel on my bus so you may want to bring an extension cord I had to route the cord under my RV fortunately my onboard 50 amp cord was just long enough. The sewer and water bibs may be located in closer proximity to your neighbor than to you and there were a few muddy spots around the site that we had to avoid and finally the most stressful part of our stay - exiting the campground back onto Hwy 105 it's like merging on to a super speedway with blind curves it can be a little intimidating. This is definitely a campground I'd book again, we loved the atmosphere and all our friendly neighbors and the staff was amazing too...

The men's bathroom had 3 showers, 3 stalls, 1 urinal and 4 sinks. There's a pavilion where I got to hear live music Saturday evening.
