Incredulous, I told him we'd try something better and headed south on Federal to Grandpa's We sat out on the picnic tables in the parking lot, literally a few feet from cars whizzing by on Federal. One bite of his small double burger made him forget all about that clown Ronald. He polished it off faster than you can say, "Wow, Dad, thanks for bringing me here. Can we come again?" I had heard for years that I needed to try Grandpas Burgers. I finally went. It was a Sunday around 2pm when we arrived and saw a few people standing around waiting for their food. As we were walking outside a gentleman asked us what number we were and we were about 10 after him. Okay 10 orders. not bad. We stood outside in the sun, people watching on Federal for 10 minutes. 20 minutes. 30 minutes. 40 minuets. I started getting really antsy and annoyed. They finally called our number after 50 minutes of waiting. We sat down at their picnic tables basically in the road on Federal and unwrapped them. I have been waiting to try these forever. I will say those first few bites were amazing. Maybe it was cause I was so starving from waiting for long or maybe they really were that good, but that time frame to make some basic smash burgers is ridiculous! I was so excited to go back to one of my most favorite childhood memories. To much surprise things were different. Very different this time. New menu board not the one with the push in red letters. Huge covering the window i used to watch the cooks works at as a kid. No more lady writing orders on your bag. A guy w a computer. Printed tickets. Oh and if you pay cash its c a different price then if you pay card. And I guess I get all of that. New updated menu to look nicer and better tech to keep up with the times. What almost made me walk out was the price. $27 for a large cheeseburger fries and a cherry shake????? Insane. The hype really made them jack the prices up to $30 a meal.......sad. I have this problem that I'm immediately a fanboy of any business that's...well...been in business for a long time. Grandpa's Burger Haven has been a Denver mainstay since the 1960's. It's an old school burger joint doing it their way or the highway. And who doesn't admire that? Now there are a few rules when you come here. The words "modern" or "contemporary" or "21st century" are nowhere to be found. The burgers are gigantic, roughly the size of a large donut like an apple fritter. They have regular hamburgers or steakburgers, and they're available in different sizes. From the outside looking in, you'll notice this is a burger stand not a sit down restaurant. There is ZERO seating. These burgers are meant to be enjoyed in your car like the drive thrus of yesteryear. You can try to wait until you're home to dive in, but the greasy smell of that brown bag will force you to dive in. I burnt my mouth devouring those onion rings. Man, these were delicious! Crunchy, well seasoned and piping hot. I love a good onion ring and these were damn tasty. I couldn't believe the size of the large cheeseburger. The burger and bun are the size of your face. All burgers come with mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. You might like your burgers differently, but I, in fact, love the simplicity of these old school burger flavors. Be careful here now that it has new ownership. The large fat cook looked at me like he hated me when I walked in. There was no toothpick through the rapper like there always has been, and I didn't think anything of it. When I started eating the sandwich, I found a very sharp toothipick purposely placed in the peripheray of the bun perfectly vertical and virtually invisible. There is no way this wasn't intentional and could have caused serious injury. I understand that there may some bad feelings out there because of all of the ICE arrests (which I don't support), but it's not okay to try and hurt an innocent person whom you know zero about. The food here is very good, but your employee Mark has shit for an attitude and clearly doesn't like to help the customers that come in. Not everyone who comes to Grandpas Burgers has been visiting it for years and knows everything about the menu. I really slept on this place all this time and was really missing out. First off they are handling the pandemic with their setup well. You go in order get a number and wait in your car. They call it from a loud speaker and you go pick it up inside. Fantastic Second the food here is great. The corndogs are delicious, the hamburgers taste great and the large is a crazy size.
