We went driving on bumpy…read moremountain roads, hiking up the side of a mountain alongside a picturesque babbling brook and picnicked next to a sparkling lake with a view of the mountains. Our focus was photography, and our route did not disappoint on that score. We also stopped for fresh baked goods and coffee on our way out of Missoula which made the ride that much more pleasant. We are generally outdoor people but we chose to use a tour company because we were traveling with a baby and didn't know how to find routes that would be child friendly and not overly demanding. We would definitely recommend Wenfei's guiding services and have referred several friends to her Big Sky Safaris for Montana travel. In particular her being a biologist makes an outstanding enhancement to hiking - we are not very knowledgeable about birds and animal droppings, and Wenfei pointed out all sorts of interesting things for us as well as small details worth photographing that we wouldn't have noticed on our own. Wenfei made us very comfortable, gave us excellent gear advice, and spared us many hours of poring over maps to identify good areas to visit. She also was really knowledgeable about the local plants and birds during our early autumn MT trip. This was a great splurge during our MT trip and one we'd do again in a heart beat.

I decided to just rate my experience here and I must say it was a good one. In all honesty, I've never heard of the place until today. I have lived in Montana for 14 years now but for some reason or another, this place never crossed my radar. While taking a road trip to explore Butte today, my husband insisted we stop here. After a quick Google search on my phone, I saw we were only about a mile away but had less than 20 minutes before it closed (4pm on a Sunday). The younger man at the desk inside was very helpful and told us we didn't need to rush and could take our time. It was $10 for my husband, myself, and our two kids to enter. After paying, you walk through a short tunnel to the viewing area. Unfortunately the wind was insane today so we did end up rushing, but it was still a very unique experience and I am glad we decided to go. The color of the water is deceiving. You wouldn't guess it is full of toxic chemicals. The Berkeley Pit used to be an open pit copper mine. It has a depth of over 1,600 feet and is filled with over 900 feet of water. It is said to have the acidity of Coca Cola or lemon juice. The pit is filled with a combination of various chemicals, which help give it that greenish-blue color. It was interesting to stand there and imagine how it looked years ago. My kids really enjoyed reading about the history of the pit. We do plan on making another trip back there when the weather is better so we can fully fake advantage of that piece of Butte's history. I would definitely recommend!

We can't see the propane cannon, and they didn't provide a way for us to know when we hear it: they didn't know how often it goes off, have an audio recording to play for us, etc. But thankfully, Tom Scott's got us covered. His YT video at timestamp 1:08 demonstrates an audio example of their use of the propane cannon. Just sounds like a simple thud. Nothing extravagant. But that's the sound you can look for when you're there. Goes off once every few mins. . Overall they maintain restriction against bird presence very well. - So well that you won't be getting a chance witness their use of rifles to scare any unknowing birds away during your visit haha . Tip: I think just acknowledging the Pit's existence is sufficient. Not much to do at this attraction. Thus, not quite worth the hassle of a visit. + Restrooms and water are well maintained. We didn't go up to the cabins as we had an older dog with us and it was decently warm out :) You can still see the wallpapers in the old hotel, as well as the kitchen, the bathtub under the stairs, and the upstairs rooms. The gift shop was nice, and the lady there was very helpful. I would totally recommend visiting the Garnet ghost town! 10/10

So we took a chance and headed over first thing in the morning. They said we could bring our dog along so we bought tickets for the first tour. I'm so glad we did! The tour was great and the open air bus kept things cool with a breeze even in warm temperatures. The engineer was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and I'm honestly shocked at how much I learned about the history of this town. The kids who had him as their 8th grade history teacher were lucky, indeed.I feel like we got to see it all wrapped up in a neat little bow of a 1 hour tour. The price was incredibly reasonable and if you need to use the restroom before or after your tour you can just walk across the street to the Capitol building.
