Pack Monadnock - A stone outcropping, about halfway up rustically beautiful well-maintained Marion Davis from NH-101 Wilton Rd

You'll feel how in-shape you are or aren't for hiking :-) We hiked the rustically beautiful well-maintained Marion Davis trail up from NH-101 Wilton Rd to the 2290 ft peak in about 90 minutes, then returned the easier way down Miller State Park Road in about half that time. There were rocky outcroppings and not-yet-greening (Apr 2026) grey-brown hardwood forests. Nearer the summit, there were spruce. At the top, we talked with friendly helpful rangers, (used the restrooms), and climbed the Fire Tower. We could see the taller Grand Monadnock Mountain to the west, and we could see wide open vistas, from the summit, and from halfway down Miller Rd. where the power lines cross the road. The cost was $4 per adult, $2 for kids, and free for seniors. If there's no ranger at the Miller State Park entrance, you can pay "the Iron Ranger" (the metal drop-box :-). I think there's a small souvenir shop at the summit, but we didn't check it out. And you can drive up and park at the summit when you're not up for the hike. By the way, we guessed that "Pack" meant "small". Apparently "Monadnock" is the name the Abenacki gave it as a "stand-alone" remnant of an ancient mountain range.

If you're like me, perhaps sculptures aren't your favorite type of art. And maybe you haven't heard…read moreof this place. But something MAGICAL happens when you see sculptures displayed in the woods. You'll see these sculptures with a whole new appreciation. There's art here from sculptors from all over the world. And there's a nice variety as well. A nice map is available in the parking area to help you navigate. There's signage for each piece and some have explanations as well to enrich your understanding. Some of the trail signage is less than clear but you're always close to a numbered sculpture so you can find exactly where you are on your map. A few tips: - Wear sneakers or hiking shoes as some of the trails are a bit rough. - Be prepared to walk and climb. There are 140 acres, multiple trails and much of it involves climbing up (or down) - Bring the kids! Most kids will love the walk through the woods and will enjoy discovering each new sculpture. - Maps are available in the parking area, but print your own (in color) ahead of time if possible. - Most of the sculptures are up from the parking area. I recommend walking up the paved Parking Trail to get started. Yes it's a bit longer but easier and there's some great sculptures on it. When you get to #26- Community and Diversity, you are at a junction and you can pick up trails through the woods for most of the place. - Allow at least 2-3 hours or you will feel like you missed out. By the way the variety of mushrooms was fantastic in August. Just another treat in a wonderful place. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
