Very disappointed with the food and the cost for the amount of food. Scallops were not cooked at table as stated in menu(server said he forgot to tell us that's done inside only! Price did not reflect it! $40.00 dollars for 3 scallops and some Risotto! The San Francisco style cioppino was more like a little bit of seafood in stewed tomatoes, don't waste your money! It is my first trip to NB and we stopped here by chance. This was a great experience with pleasant service. The wait staff was nice and the food was amazing. When we walked in we saw someone making the Caesar salad dressing and orders that instead with our lobster rolls (best choice ever... real ceasar dressing!!) the lobster rolls were amazing! The bread was buttered and there was nothing but a thick amount of lobster over flowing the roll. I would highly suggest this to anyone looking for somewhere to eat in St John. read more

I visited Saint John again on business and made sure that Grannan's was on the list for dinner. Again they provided amazing service and high quality food. One night was the lobster and another the scallops that are cooked tableside. I wasn't disappointed. Joe, the bartender, is great for stories and making you feel really welcome. Have not had anything that I didn't like here the only complaint when it comes too the food was the lobster roll did not have enough lovster in it, that was kind of a waste at the time. We were hungry after a day visiting downtown. We decided to stay at Market Square to eat. Grannan's was our pick of restaurants lining the harbour. The others seemed more like pub fare and we wanted a restaurant. Ultimately we would of been better off going to one of the other joints. The restaurant is not well cared for- tables of kilter stabilized by napkins, the and bath room was filthy. Service was reasonable and fast but the food was disappointing. It was one of those experiences were you leave the a restaurant feeling swindled. My in-laws each had the Millionaire Fish n' chips at $15.39. They said that the batter on the fish and scallops was really soggy. The scallops were tasty but the sogginess of the batter destroyed the dish. It shouldn't be too much to expect a slightly crispy batter at a seafood restaurant. I had the mussels and fries, which was listed as Mussels and Frites, a strange mixture of the French and English title for the dish. The mussels were a small tasty variety but they were dried up by the times they were served, and while they swam in a puddle of tepid water even thought they menu had promised that tehy were steamed in beer. My husband went for the crepe which was tasty but more like a starter than a main course. The best dish that was server to the table as the Chicken Parmigana that my son had. A big piece of chicken breast (a little too big) served with pasta in a tasty tomato sauce that seemed fresh and well prepared. The menu is hard to follow and cold be better planned. I wouldn't go back here and I would advise any wandering tourists to try one of the other patios on this stretch. Sorry Grannan's but my over all sense of the place was that management really doesn't care much about the food served or state of the restaurant, the location keeps business ticking. Put us in a shitty corner surrounded by screaming children. We ordered the Lobster Meal for 2 -- chowder (usually comes with clam chowder, for extra $$ you can get seafood chowder), mussels and a lobster each. Food was good, I give them that. But the whole meal took over three hours. THREE HOURS. By the time the lobsters came, I just wanted to go home. They did apologize, but quickly followed up by saying they were short staffed - I don't need excuses, I just want my food. read more

I had the fish pie and it was Fantastic! I have to say it was one of the best, if not the best thing I have ever eaten in my many decades on this planet. I was in town for a conference and decided to take some food back to my hotel room to watch the game and get some work done. The food took less then 10 minutes before it was ready to take home. I ordered the fish and chips which were damn good. I don't typically eat or enjoy fish but this stuff was cooked perfectly. It was very fresh with a crispy batter and came along with an excellent tarar sauce and cole slaw. The staff was very friendly and professional. This place is a must go to when visiting Saint John. I have to admit l am a fan as this is my third time this year in the city and Grannan's is a must visit. Table for 4 and everyone left satisfied. I had a freshly made caesar salad (ohh that garlic) and some local lobster.... everything was perfect. Everyone else had variations of caesar salad or seafood chowder for starters and main courses were Halibut or Lobster Alfredo. Needless to say my clients were satisfied and raved about the food. Yes its an old restaurant, but you are here for some fresh seafood and Grannan's is head and shoulders above the crowd. The price is right and the staff very friendly and attentive. Another Market Square restaurant, right next door to Saint John Ale House, with a menu that offers some of the same seafood dishes. We ate at both and came away with a slightly better experience at Grannan's. Because the weather was chilly, we dined inside, upstairs at a window table overlooking the lively outdoors scene. We found another very strong beer list and a good, swift bartender, a server who was friendly and efficient and food that we thought marginally superior to the Ale House next door. We tried one of the daily specials, clam vermicelli, pretty tasty but maybe wanting a bit for lemon (and a rather small portion, too), and the Atlantic Salmon, lightly blackened, crusty on the outside but just a little dry inside. The vegetables served with the fish were excellent, however. Because neither Grannan's or the Ale House struck us as extraordinary in any way, we give both three stars, but if you're looking for a recommendation, we suggest Grannan's -- but just barely. read more

Grannan's was recommended as a place to try on Cruise Critic, and it was a well deserved recommendation! My mom, brother and I all had the North Atlantic Lobster Roll and Moosehead beer. This restaurant leaves a whole lot to be desired. No one was at the hostess stand for several minutes. Finally was seated and waitress brought menu fairly quickly. Ordered lobster that was supposed to be two shelled lobsters with French fries and seasonal vegetables. Very pricey but a splurge for me. Lobsters were very small, not well cleaned and cold. Seasonal vegetables were three over cooked asparagus spears, two broccoli florets and two large wedges of red bell pepper. Vegetables were stone cold. Melted butter for lobster was barely warm. Another person in party had seafarer's platter and while it looked appealing it too was cold. Tried to order cheesecake for dessert but was told they were out of it but could have some in 20 minutes. This was at 6 pm so it was still early in the dinner service to run out of one of the two dessert choices. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

Had not been here in years and must say the only thing that has gone to a higher level is the prices. My wife had fish and chips and the fish was over cooked and dry. I had the Fisherman's pie. This has been one of my favourite restaurants since I was a kid. The seafood chowder is one of the best around and I've had seafood chowder from many restaurants throughout the maritimes. The seafood crepe (not sure if they still have it) is pretty delicious as well. It's a little pricey, but you can get gift certificates from costco that help with the price. read more

My wife and I went at 8:45 PM on Thursday. There was only one other table occupied so there wasn't a lot of energy in the room. The server was attentive and helpful. The problem is that we had salmon which didn't taste fresh. Although nicely seasoned and presented, there isn't much you can do when the fish doesn't taste fresh. I would go back, but would have beef. If is a shame to visit Atlantic Canada and not be able to get good fish. read more

We were here via a cruise, sat down and got a bubbly teenage waitress, she was off after giving us the menu and came back 15 minutes later, we asked for the price of the lobster feast for two, and she told us she'd check since it was market price, she came back and told us it was 55 dollars, we said sure! the wait for the food was about 40 minutes for the appetizer, and after that, we waited another 30 minutes for the lobsters, and the waitress apologized for the wait, after we finished the lobsters, we asked for the check, waited another 15 minutes, got the check, and GASP!, she charged us 75 dollars for the dish, when we asked to speak to the manager, she said NO, we can't. She said it should be 65 and then she went inside then came out and changed her story and said actually, it should be 75 like it said on the bill. We weren't in the arguing mood, but she added salt on the wound, but saying "well at least the food was good right?" They probably do this regularly to tourists, beware and go somewhere else. It just seems like a really shady business. The food was I think okay, nothing great. I hope they don't overcharge us on the credit card. read more

Waaay over priced for fast food fish rest. Much less for a gourmet fare. Ordered dehydrated (kidding) mussels, 2 beer, scallop entree, and a fish stew on mashed potatoes. Scallops were "Digby Scallops" but the size of a large penny. My fish stew over mashed potatoes was a joke - a shrimp and 2 scallops and the rest was a cream sauce. And the total $130.00. This restaurant must be surviving on its reputation because it is not a good place to eat. My wife and I ordered 2 appetizers, one was good, the stuffed mushrooms, the other, coconut shrimp was awful, half pieces or dried out shrimp in not so good dipping sauce. My wife received the wrong entree and no solution was offered just "we will adjust the price to what you got" Mine was bad, I only ate 1/3. The server, who was a rookie and maybe not trained well didn't bother to ask why we didn't eat much. Located near the dockside and amongst a variety of other eateries this pleasant establishment offers a selection of salads, burgers, and hearty appetizers (in addition to a few select entrées). I've been here on several occasions and have experienced prompt to inefficient service - I suppose it depends on the day you visit, but the food has generally been good. If you end up dining outside be advised that on certain nights of the week you will be stage side for different entertainment shows which, at times, can be so loud that talking amongst your companions will be difficult to achieve. However i ordered a second bucket and they left us there with the same saturated paper and then dumped the second bucket on it which is wrong to me. For that reason alone, they lose points. As someone who never complains about anything in public I have to rate Grannan's Caesar Salad as one of the worst I have ever had. The dressing was runny, poor quality romaine, mostly stalks. The croutons were probably the cheapest they could buy in bulk. If you are going to buy them at least spend a little more for better quality. Just came from a family dinner with 5 others who enjoyed their seafood and steak meals, even though they questioned the quantity for the high prices.By choice I do not eat fish or red meat and am content to have salad as my dinner. I have eaten a lot of salads at many different restaurants in Saint John and elsewhere. Most serve much better for half the price. Our service was good, the waiter was very attentive. Manager offered a very courteous, polite, respectful apology even though in her 3 years experience she had never had a complaint??? She had a very precise, practiced apology. If I could give this no stars I would. This has to be one of the most disappointing meals I have ordered. Grabbed a table for 2 on the patio at noon on Sunday, and was greeted fairly quickly by the server. When the server was asked "how are the crab cakes" she giggled and answered "crabby". Ok, not off to a great start......We ordered clams and fries as well as fish and chips. Considering this is a seafood restaurant we were expecting fresh and well cooked seafood. What we got could not have been further from that. Both had the taste and texture of overly processed frozen seafood that was overcooked in an oven. The fish and clams were so overcooked and dried out - all that we could taste was overcooked breading. Their fries were obviously frozen and dropped into a fryer, and as with the seafood, seriously overcooked. I think we ate about 1/3 of the meal. Very disappointed.
