The building was originally the town's first funeral parlor, hence the "creamatorium" theme, so that's a fun twist. Staff on the ice cream side wasn't super friendly and they were weirdly strict about only one sample per person (there wasn't a line or anyone behind us) but it is what it is. The ice cream itself was tasty and not insanely expensive. I ended up going for a scoop of one of the peanut butter flavors (buckeye bites maybe) in a cup and it totally hit the spot. Was there a few years ago. My family & I had lunch there on a day off. I had a walleye dinner & LOVED it! It came with Cabbage & Noodles, a dinner roll, a salad and DELICIOUS fried walleye fillets. The server was courteous and diligent. It's in a century home so it has a down home feel. It's my kind of Mom & Pop place. I highly recommend it! And to finish off your entree, try some Toft's ice cream. It's local and very good. They knocked it out of the park. I need to get there soon. read more

A cute place in a cute town. When you hear a name like Granny Joe's, you have a certain expectation in mind. This place definitely lives up to that expectation. This is a quaint ice cream shop in downtown Vermilion located in the Main Street district. They have their own parking lot and plenty of seating inside. In the summer, the tables can get crowded. Prices are extremely fair (but so is everything in Vermilion). The homey decor is so fitting of the name Granny Joe's! They easily carry about 20+ flavors of ice cream, plus traditional favorites like hot fudge sundaes, malts and tin roofs. I have been coming here for years since I was little in the summers, and something about their ice cream is just so delicious when you're in this little beach town. I recommend the lemon blueberry cheesecake in a cup. Two scoops will give you generous leftovers! The staff is really helpful and happy to help you with samples. They also have a cute outdoor porch you can sit on. It also doesn't hurt to just grab your ice cream, walk to more local shops, the beautiful library, or of course: THE BEACH! read more

Lots of hand scooped ice cream options and a nice patio We have visited here for ice cream many times. Usually after a stroll on the beach we will walk here for ice cream. They have over 20 choices of hand dipped ice cream. I do feel like prices have gone up a little. It's $4 for a scoop which is pricey for the size. They carry Tofts Ice Cream (which is one of the best around) and they offer many flavors. Some of our personal favorites include peanut butter cheesecake, lemon blueberry cheesecake, and of course staples like mint chocolate chip and butter pecan! The prices start at $4 for one scoop and let me tell you, even for an ice cream lover such as myself, one scoop is a large serving. Stopped on a Sunday afternoon just by chance, the place was really busy, we waited in line for a bit but the ice cream was really worth the wait, hand scooped with many great flavors to choose from . The place was very clean with a really cozy atmosphere, I hope to visit again soon to try the diner, on a less busy afternoon. The price for the ice cream was really reasonable considering how good it tasted and the staff were really friendly, not seeming to be bothered by the crowd or rushing you in any way. I had a banana split and my partner got a small waffle cone with one of their unique flavors involving chocolate. Both were exceptionally good. This place's icecream was amazing. I tried the pumpkin and bourbon truffle- something flavors and together it was amazing. If I lived closer by I would go back here again just for the icecream. Atmosphere wise we went on a cloudy day kind of late and there weren't a lot of people around. It feels like a grandmas house lol. I think that family / elderly people wise this place is really cool and is oriented towards them. But as for young adults / teens kind of poor marketing.. I like this place, so let me get the negative out of the way. It is sometimes hard to get service when you want to eat in. On two occasions I've sat down and waited for a server only to give up after 8-10 minutes. Now the good: the best ice cream in town. They have a Buckeye sundae that if you are a chocolate and peanut butter lover (like I am) that you have to try. I'm not sure I've gotten anything else, but the family usually mixes it up and they've never been disappointed. Plenty of flavors and toppings to choose from. They also have a good selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In my opinion, it's the best perch sandwich in town. It's a pretty full menu, so you should be able to find something for everyone in your party. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available and it's really close to the center of town. They stop serving food before they close up the ice cream shop, so if it's getting late, I'd suggest confirming that the kitchen is still open. We happened upon this place when attending a festival and most places were crowded. This was a little oasis of peace and quiet, with cute and homey decor. My friend had cabbage rolls, Cole slaw, and fruit cup, and I had a cup of beef vegetable soup and a chicken salad sandwich. Everything was delicious and it was so nice to dine in a place that didn't have music blasting in your ears. Our waitress was very attentive as well - she checked on us several times. We ordered a fairly large takeout order, took 15 mins as stated which was nice. However honestly the food kinda sucks here and the portions are small for the price compared to other places. Ordered the biscuits & gravy breakfast combo; got two laughably small biscuits with a oversized serving of gravy. Eggs tasted icky, toast was nothing special, bacon was fine. Overall I'm sure there are better places for food in this area. With the mediocre quality and portion sizes, the food should be cheaper. read more

The service was absolutely awful. They are slow, inattentive, and disorganized which is why I didn't complain directly because I was tired of waiting for every little thing. Cute spot. This ice cream parlor/ lunch spot was once the town funeral parlor-- hence the ice creamatorium joke. Lunch was fine, but nothing very special-- american on rye grilled cheese, decent tomato soup. The chicken and dumpling soup seemed homemade with lots of pieces of chicken. The ice cream was good enough. My daughter's pancakes were the real standout here. They were pleasantly substantial with large blueberries. The dough of the pancake was rich and very tasty. They are huge, and you can buy them singly. AND they serve breakfast all day! So you can forgo the sammys and stick with the pancakes! read more

My girlfriend and I made a day-trip out to Vermilion from the Cleveland/Akron area. The weather was great, and we got in a really nice walk in "Mill Hollow-Bacon Woods Memorial Park." We decided to stop at Granny Joe's for lunch, and my girlfriend called when we were a few minutes away to see if they were crowded. The woman who answered the phone said that they had plenty of open seating outside (which we wanted, in these COVID-days!), and that there was one table inside which was open. We could not reserve an outside table, though. However, when we got there all of the tables outside were taken (except for two tables with broken umbrellas that offered no protection on a hot and sunny day). All of the outside diners looked like they were in the middle of their meals and clearly they had not just arrived there immediately before us (not sure if the woman on the phone even looked outside, or if it was a bait-and-switch?). So, it's unclear how the woman on the phone was mistaken about how many tables outside were available, but we nonetheless waited for a table outside. My girlfriend and I both ordered the perch sandwich. She ordered a side of potato salad (which she really likes), but she was disappointed in what she got at Granny Joe's. I ordered the cabbage and noodles as a side, and I too was disappointed (especially since it was so heavy with bacon). However, the perch sandwiches themselves were quite good, and the accompanying tartar sauce was tasty. After lunch, we got a couple of Granny Joe's ice cream cones for take-out, and we enjoyed them during a short walk to one of the nearby public beaches. Overall, the Granny Joe's service was pretty good, and the prices were reasonable. It's worth a try. read more

Okay I have 2 opinons for Granny Joes. FIRST: THE ICE CREAM IS SO GOOD. Like really, it is great. Plus the workers were champs and let me literally sample every flavor before deciding. There were too many good choices, but that is a great problem to have. SECOND: The food is a rip off. Man, you can live in a town for 22 years and still learn new things about it. I never even knew this place had anything other than ice cream, and I'm so glad I ventured to find out. Went for a late breakfast on a Saturday...I ordered a Cinnamon Crunch muffin, but they were out, and instead had a Chocolate one. Holy geez. That muffin was almost enough to sell me on this restaurant. Ridiculous. My parents both had omelettes which they RAVED about. My bacon and oatmeal were also solid. The dining room is sparsely decorated, but it suits the place. It's a yellow room with white trim and basic decorations, but it gives off a clean, bright, cheerful vibe. Nothing about this place is extravagant, but we all left having really enjoyed breakfast and our experience. Accordingly: "Yay! We're fans." I rarely regret giving a new (to me) place a try. We came in for breakfast with a large group of 11 on our first morning of vacation in Vermillion, OH. We were seated outside under a nice umbrella which kept the sun away from most of the seats. There is actually a table under the awning of the patio which would have been perfect if it wasn't taken. My seat was actually quite sunny and i was burning up. Food was average nothing spectacular. We ordered eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc. and nothing really stood out as being great, but nothing was terrible either. Coffee was fairly weak and they definitely lose points for not having Ice Coffee (everywhere that serves breakfast should have Ice Coffee in this day and age). Finally, for my first introduction to Ohio service, I found the waitress to have about as much personality as a soggy piece of toast. I should mention that they do have ice cream here and we will probably go back and give that a shot ... if we do I'll update this review. read more
