When I needed thread for my outdoor sun umbrella, the staff was able to quickly advise me which types of thread would wear well outdoors through rain and sun, and they had a large assortment of colors to find a perfect match. I've never shopped for fabrics there but they seem to have a large supply! Prices seemed good; I paid less than I thought I would have to, given today's inflation of prices everywhere you turn. I came to the store a few weeks ago with a Janome HD 1000 I was about ready to beat up with a baseball bat. It was throwing crows' nests no matter thread style, tension, etc., sewing ridiculously loud, and making me hate the once cool hobby of sewing. Matt patiently looked over my machine, helped point out both some user and machine errors/issues, and provided tips and tricks on how to improve. It was abundantly clear he KNOWS what he's talking about, and his patience / willingness to help others learn was hugely appreciated. I brought my vintage Singer sewing machine to be repaired and now it sews very well - smooth and stitches are excellent.

I cannot speak highly enough of Grant House Sewing. I took a sewing machine made in 1990 that I bought used in for a tune up and troubleshooting. I didn't even recognize it as my machine when I got it back it was so sparkling clean. Service was great. They told me how long it would take and they notified me when it was ready. The ONLY fabric store in Santa Barbara!!! This store has sold sewing machines since 1970 but started offering fabric a few years ago. The space is cute and nicely decorated. I loved the open feeling...it's very light & airy, and clean. I found some fabric that worked for me. I was actually referred here by Michael's, where I first went looking for fabric. 5 years ago I posted a review about my ailing Pfaff sewing machine being brought back to excellent working condition by Grant House. Today, I needed "invisible" thread in a hurry to sew some custom patch work I was asked to do on a friend's jeans. Grant House had not one but several flavors of invisible thread as well as advice on how to use them. Once again, they solved an "urgent" problem for me. I stopped here while driving through town and in need of a sewing machine. I have VERY rare need of a sewing machine but now is one of those times and I was really hoping to find something in the lower price range (under $150 including tax). Grant's is pretty easy to find from the 101 and I was greeted quickly when I entered the store. The young woman who helped me was very polite but explained that they don't sell new machines in my price range because they consider those "disposable". Their sewing machines started at about $200 before tax. It gave me a negative feeling, since I didn't feel like my personal sewing needs really warranted an expensive, sturdier machine, but she did her best to help me and showed me some second hand models they had in my budget. They were much older than I had expected and looked a bit too complicated for me as well. In the end, she tried to give me suggestions of other stores I might try for cheaper machines. If you need service or a solid, workhorse machine, come to Grant's. If you just want the ability to hem your own pants and/or do extremely minimal projects at a low (for sewing machines) price, go to Amazon, Costco or JoAnn's. I guess I just wasn't their kind of customer. read more

Great store in the back, lots of quilting fabrics and sewing supplies. It took over 2 weeks to repair my little sewing matching. Great work, I was very happy, they even replaced a broken part. It's just a shame they don't have a repair person in store more then once a week. read more

I thought my 30 yr old Pfaff sewing machine was a goner. It was bundling thread on the underside of the stitches, was not de-clutching when winding bobbins and couldn't sew thin silk without wadding it up. I brought it to Grant House and they fixed or adjusted all the issues with a general service. Now my vintage Pfaff is running like a champ and sews properly again. They have very reasonable prices and lots of Pfaff and other machine accessories, like feet and attachments. They also have notions and fabrics at the store with easy street parking on Cota or Laguna Streets right in front of the store. Best of all, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. After bringing my old featherweight to life a few months ago, I accidentally popped out the bulb when removing it from its case and could not (after many tries) pop it back into place....I took it in yesterday, and Voila! It is lovely to be able to buy a zipper without leaving town.Years back I was waiting and WAITING for Pfaff to come out with their new machine, which I intended to get at GH. But Pfaff just didn't come out with their machine, so I finally bought an "almost what I wanted" newer Pfaff on line. Bingo! Pfaff released their newest machine. I just wanted to say I am soooo glad I purchased my industrial machine from Grant House. I had used an industrial machine in the past, but was not real familiar with fixing any problems that might come up with a machine like that. Grant is the nicest and most understanding when a problem should occur. I have talked to him on the phone and he walked me through any small fix I needed. He has even made a house call for me too! I work my 10-year-old Pfaff hard on window treatments, pillows, and other house projects, as well as monograms and embroidery. My sisters and daughters keep me busy with requests for monogrammed kitchen towels and bath pillows!
