I am disappointed in Grassroots Books. They are allowing customers to come in unmasked, on the grounds that customers are "tired" of wearing them. Some employees are also wearing plastic visors or face shields instead of full face coverings. Grassroots is a great option when looking for everything from Kids books to DVDs to NYT Best Sellers. They accept donations but I wouldn't expect to get much for them. I like to think of it as a goodwill of sorts, only you are helping the store and sharing media that others will find useful. For us, the kids books is the main appeal. They have a huge selection at a much better price than bookstores and given how quickly kids grow up, it's nice to get a discount on books that may only be used for a short time. The staff is friendly and is always available for questions and I appreciate the laid back atmosphere where you don't feel bad about thumbing through a book or letting your kids preview books they would like. read more

Awesome independent little bookstore in Reno, near the Costco. We got a coupon from my son's school for free books. We ended up buying some new and used books for a discounted price (better than B&N). One of the free books I got was a mint hardcover 100th anniversary edition of Anne of Green Gables! Any of the books without a sticker on the front qualified for the free book coupon. Staff were friendly, and the store was comfortably busy on a Sunday afternoon. I have been to Grassroots Books for their bag days and to sell back books and movies. Besides an email exchange with the hiring manager that had a nasty undertone; I do love the place. For a used bookstore, their selection is great and their books are in good quality. Most of the books on their shelves are near to new to new quality. Moreover, the prices are great! While their bag days' book sales have lower quality books (you can definitely tell that they are used), the amount of books you can walk away with is a steal! They also sell Books on Tape, DVD's and coloring books for adults ;) As far as selling back books, they aren't always the best. Sometimes I have brought in boxes of books and movies (DVD's) and have walked away with $20.00. If you are wanting to do spring cleaning and you just want to make the space, they are great! But if you are wanting to make a profit and don't care about holding onto the books for a while, Amazon would be a better venue to sell books on. Lastly, I also love the fact they have discounts for teachers and give back to our local community via book donations to children, their families, and other nonprofits. read more

What not to love about a book store! Yes, I still read ol' fashion books. Books for me are tactile. Holding the book in hand and settling in is part of reading. I don't have to worry about the screen flipping or dropping it like I would reading on a tablet. Plus used books are cheaper than the cost to download most e-books. Yes, they buy back books. I usually go with a shopping bag of books to sell. I'm not getting rich off selling back books but it usually takes a few buck off my purchase. They will give you cash if that's what you prefer. The WAREHOUSE days are amazing. They open the warehouse section in the back and sell tons of books for $1. Plus video game, DVDs, etc. don't know the price point as I don't buy them. Great place to pick up old books for crafting. There's a community room in the back that can be rented out. I've been to two Grassroots hosted events during ArtTown. One was a collage class. We were given a record (music) and tons of old books and magazines plus glue and were told to create! The other was Purse Making from Books. They provided old books and fabric. I loved that the focus was to create a prototype not a masterpiece. They gave us enough supplies to take home to create our masterpiece. Grassroots is more than just books -- videos games, DVD, etc. You just can't beat the prices: Used Paperbacks $1.99 Used Hardbacks $3.99 Kids Books 99¢ DVDs $3.99, or 3 for $9.99 Comic Books 99¢ Video Games $2.99 Audio Books $6.99 The above are prices on unpriced books. 1000 years ago, I worked in a local book store. I pretty much got burned out on books during that time. Sure I still read one here and there...but I've not really gone "book crazy" but once since I left. But I made a horrible mistake yesterday. I asked...What is this "warehouse" thing that people keep mentioning when they check out. Yeah, big mistake. It's something that I probably wish I never knew about. $1 books and even CHEAPER media (CDs, DVDs). It's all unsorted and you are looking for "gems". They do have some sorting. This shelf came in on Jan 21. That's the sorting. Many people wouldn't like this. Ugh...can't they have it all sorted so I can just find my book? Well yeah, that is what the front of the store is...and yeah, you are gonna pay a premium for that book that has been sorted and entered into the computer and shelved all nicely. All this stuff back here is like digging on an island for a treasure chest! Lots of dirt and crap to sift through...but you just might hit gold with the right pointing finger. I went in for a used HB copy of Go Set a Watchman for a bookclub read for $7.99. Ended up leaving $50 poorer...but books and books and books happier. The staff was super cool and really helpful when I was looking for the specific stuff. But I gotta go...book club is gonna be soon and I've only read the first paragraph. read more

As a teacher, I love supporting the "under dogs" and Grassroots seems to be the 'little guy' when it comes to books as compared to Barnes and Nobles or even Amazon. Here was my experience with this business: 1) ordered class set of Divergent for my students and they gave me a great teacher discount. 2) didn't have the goods ready for pick up time. 3) second time around, books were delayed again which equaled angry me and disappointed babies (my students) 4) they apologized profusely, delivered the books directly to my school as soon as it came in, gave me the publisher's cost so they made no profit on the sale, and also gave me $50 in gift certificates 5) I once again adore this business. 6) they also have warehouse events where people can walk out with boxes of decent finds! My students loved the free books! 7) the place has a strange odor to it but one can get passed that because the staff is friendly and everything is fairly priced. The End. read more

I absolutely love this place. First of all, any environment that breeds reading, free thinking, sustainability, and education gets an A plus star in my book. They donate their books to teachers after books sales!!! Second, after getting passed their amazing non-profit goals, they have amazing deals! I like manga and can find some of my favorite manga here for 2-3 dollars. Lots of marvel comics as well. To add to the goodness they are well verse and cultured. I can come here with my friends who have Wiccan beliefs and they can actually find books they like. Then, I can enjoy the feminist section that sports books that poke fun at names society views as negative, but it's only a word, how much power do you give text? They also sport a lot of helpful adult coloring books for type a's like myself, novels, non-fiction, fiction, travel, sci-fi. Basically all bases covered when it comes to books. Now!!!!, what really adds the 5 stars are their sales days!! They have, I think 4 days, so quarterly, 5 dollar bag days. Which, are about a 2 hour adventure in itself. You get a brown paper bag that you stuff with as many books as you please. They have first addition books dated back from the 1920's to Dsm 2 editions that are quite comical. Pretty much every hairy potter, hobbit, insert common novel available, kids books etc. To top it off the record sales are killer. I love vinyl, and love these! And they have great deals on color pencils/ random funny gadgets and journals. Lastly, they buy books, dvds, cds, etc from their customer base which is pretty awesome! I've been here many, many times and it's been fine but tonight I left startled, confused, and genuinely feeling bad. I went into the store tonight on the way home with my boyfriend. We didn't have anything in mind to buy because we usually just pop in for a moment and see what's newly available. We came in around 6p and decided to browse our usual sections of movies, metaphysical books, and cookbooks. We searched through the shelves but ultimately did not find anything we wanted to purchase. Deciding we were done and wanting to go home, we walked out. We nearly made it to the car before an employee came, literally, running out the front doors and startled us. We thought something was wrong or maybe we forgot something inside but this older woman with longer gray hair started telling us she was a buyer and asked if there was something we didn't find while looking around. She came forward and stood uncomfortably close to me. Taken aback, I explained to her that no and we just came in to browse and see what was new. She said she loved that we do that and then very obviously looked us over to see what we had on our persons and that's when it clicked that she was acting as if we had stolen something. I complimented the Native American section and told her I loved it and appreciated it and had recently bought my Mom a book from the store. I only brought this up to ease the tension slightly but she didn't say anything in reply to that and just stared at me and folded her arms. It was a long silence. She started going back in the store and we told her to have a good night and happy new year to which we also got no reply. It was such an intense confrontation that we had to sit in the car and decompress before driving home. We've been to this bookstore multiple times over the years and many times we ended up not buying anything. But we've never been so awkwardly and uncomfortably approached by an employee. We left feeling bad despite not doing anything at all. Not good. It felt sad to be treated in such a way at place we loved to go. read more

Love love love this place!! First time I went here was when we were pregnant with our first child. We needed those, you know baby books that every parent says they read, but never do, they just kind of end up winging it and make a ton of mistakes with the first child, but then the 2nd and 3rd child come along and your a pro!! Hahaha just kidding. Well we needed those books and we got them for a steal. Great condition and used so not that big of a deal. They also give you a little coupon to get a free book, well I didn't ever use it but the next time I went they gave me another one and I found the coolest free books. My daughter loves books. So anytime I get a chance to get a free one why not? Right? Books are not cheap. Oh the owner was there the first time and I was in a good mood so what happens when your in a good mood? Need a book or movie or music??.. This needs to be your first stop. This is my go to place whenever I need a new book to read. They have an awesome selection of everything from classical to local and a large section for those that like to read the fantasy romance books. I did all my Christmas shopping here last year and a good portion this year (I am trying to promote more reading in my family both immediate and extended). I got books for toddlers and young boys and teenage girls and parents and grandparents. All with the help from the awesome team at Grassroots! The staff is great and very knowledgeable and what they may not know, they are able to ask each other to tag team a question. They are super friendly and excited to help everyone find what they need. Oh and if you are thirsty.. they even have a water fountain and sometimes coffee/tea available. The prices can't be beat. For the newbie.. if a item has a sticker with the grassroots logo on it, it is the price on the sticker, if not.. it goes for the "unstickered price". there are signs all over that list the unstickered prices. when in doubt, ask an employee or even a friendly patron standing next to you. chances are they have been there before and can show you the price sign. :) read more

I have always been a prolific reader and of literature in particular. I have a report card from Fifth Grade upon which my nun of a teacher wrote that I was no longer allowed to bring outside reading to school because I was "reading too much." I have a particular soft spot for Minority American Literature from authors such as Junot Diaz, Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, and Jumpa Lahiri, as well as American Literature from the start of the 20th century filled with dramatic irony and the disillusionment of America. The last few years I've seen a decrease in my availability to read freely, due to lack of time and rearranging of priorities. Most of my reading time has been spent while traveling. The Kindle is amazing for this: I can easily read five to ten books on a two week vacation. That being said, there will always be the allure of a new fresh book and all the promise and possibilities it holds when you are opening to the first page for the first time. The anticipation of what may come is almost as exciting for me as the thrill and conquest of finishing the novel. I have made it a priority to read in 2014. It started with a pledge to finish the tome that I had been stuck on for quite some time by the end of January. I calculated that I needed to read 20 pages a day this month to complete it. It was inspired by a wedding client of mine who was pledging to hike every day for 30 days straight. I finished that book three days ago. When Boyfriend and I had hours upon hours to kill in Reno, NV yesterday after dropping friends off at the airport and before an early afternoon doctor's appointment, I forced him to drive me to a bookstore that I found on Yelp. It sounded amazing. It was the MOST AMAZING BOOKSTORE EVER. Grassroots Books in Reno, NV has the best selection of gently used books I've ever seen. The first time you go in, they give you a free used book. Everything that isn't specifically priced in the store is either $1.99 for paperbacks or $2.99 for hardbacks. I was in heaven. I came home with 18 books for $42 and already started reading Eat, Pray, Love. I did accidentally come home with one book that's already on my waiting-to-be-read book shelf but never fear, I can return it for a trade-in. They'll give you cash or trade for used books when you bring yours in! I live in a town that is sadly without a bookstore so it's refreshing to happen upon a goldmine from an independent amazing bookstore like this and I cannot wait to bust through this pile of books so I can go back for more! read more

They have tons of books. Some are brand new, some are used and even some toys. There are CDs, audio books and chairs around so you can rest while looking at their large selection. Everyone was nice friendly and helpful. Wish they had books on essential oils. NOT one book on essential oils. :-( read more

First of all, I love, love books. I mean, it says so in my bio; I'm a total bookworm. I'm really into the YA/NA genre scene. I go to signings, and follow all of my favorite authors and bloggers. Anyways, my point is that I make anything to do with books my business. And Grassroots is one of my new favorite places. I've been here several times now (having moved to the area only a couple months ago) and I never leave empty-handed. They have great prices, especially if you find "unmarked" or "unstickered" books (only a $1.99). The highest I've paid for a book is maybe $10, but it was a hardback that had literally been released the week before. That's another thing; they are very well stocked. From the old, to the very new. From mint condition, to lovingly used. They have a TON of choices. And if they don't have what you want, just go to the counter and let them know - they'll call you as soon as they get it in. If you are a reader, this is the place to go but only if you have time to browse! There are so many books to chose from. I have recommended this store to so many people who like to read but hate paying full price for a book. Grassroots also offers movies and music at their very discounted prices. If you watch their calendar, they offer even more discounts on certain days and a warehouse sale once a month. I usually walk in with books to sale, Grassroots offers cash or books. Typically, I walk out with a large grocery-size bag full of books for under $15. Even when shopping Walmart or Target that is usually only 2 books at that price. What I really like about Grassroots is that it is clean! Many used book stores that I have walked into has a musty smell that makes my sinuses very uncomfortable. I am a regular customer and this book store! And I came in on the bag sale days, excited and ready to get more amazing books! But then two people approached me, asked if they can talk about my service dog. They said can we talk outside, and I said no I'm shopping right now. And they said we want to talk about your service dogs training and what he is trained to do. (Legally no one can ask a person who has a service dog what he is trained for) they we rude and insisting that my dog is not an actual service dog! I did not appreciate being cornered and put in that situation because that was unprofessional and disrespectful and against the law! If your service dog is not a golden retriever or a boxer or a bigger dog he can still be a service dog. Do not single people out because of the breed of there service dog. They are implied that when I walked in he wasn't connected to my side because one of THIER EMPLOYEES said hello without asking That says he is not trained or a service dog This was a very upsetting rude conversation I felt singled out and disrespected I have always come to this store with my service dog, and everyone has been kind and respectful and endearing to him because im trying to desensitize him and help him understand all people arnt gonna abuse him and you all have helped show him that Except for today I put my books down got in my car and I am crying and not feeling like I can ever come back Thank you so much for the terrible service and flashbacks I got from those two people read more

I absolutely love this place. They have lots of used books, new books, movies, and even CDs. They have monthly calendars to tell you exactly what's going on. They have a bag cell once a month and it's however many books you can fit into one bag for 5 to 6 dollars. They have a good selection. From children's books, two adult books, and even cookbooks. The atmosphere is very bright. Even though parts maybe a little scrunched, it feels welcoming. The staff there are amazing, and very helpful. They have a really good deals on their books. Some may be the same price as regular stores, but for the majority of it it is low priced. They have a great selection! They do have parking, it is decent for the store. And if there is no available space in the parking lot itself they also have side street parking!! I highly recommend this book store, due to the fact that you can get good prices, amazing help, and the fact that they do have deals for customers. Just check the calendar! read more

I love this place. Never buy full priced books again if they have it at grassroots. There's a ton of selection and they always have fresh inventory. The children's book section here is awesome especially for kids who are interested in series. What you might not think of, this is a great place to buy gifts. They usually have thematic gift sets that always seems to satisfy someone's special occasion. They sell DVDs and blue rays for cheap too (~$3). What's better than anything is the staff, they are happy and helpful. You will certainly get a local small businesses feeling while you are here.
