I heard about this bookstore from a friend, and wanted to visit. I was expecting an unorganized huge stacks of books, as it's a used bookstore. That really wasn't the case. The outside books (cheap!!) are just roughly categorized, but the inside, it is very well organized, and the nice staff can help you find things. What I gathered in my basket was clean, looked new, with no price tags, so I thought they may be full-price. I was fine with that. BUT! They were all $1.99. I was shocked! Moreover, they give away 50 free books to kids (signup required). How nice is that? I wish I lived nearby when I was a kid. My whole household is going to be repeated customers. Grassroots is my go to place for used books. I always have a list queued up in my phone of books I want to read. Every time I visit I find a few on my list for $1.99-$5.99.... You really can't beat that! Also their new books are 20% off of sticker price. The outdoor sales are fun when you have time to browse through all of the boxes. I am lazy though and rely on the organized book selection inside. I'll pay a few extra bucks to easily find what I want. If I could change one thing, I wish they had book buy backs in the evening. They offer buy backs on Thursdays 9-2, I think, so that's hard to make when you work a 9-5 office job. But I manage to get there every once and a while on lunch. Love this book store! They have a ton of selections and wonderful employees. Everyone is so kind and it's so nice to have a variety of books. I get a lot of children's books here for my one year old. Although, I will say that I feel like some of the used books are a little on the pricier side. Still such an awesome place to check out. We love this place! First off, one free book each year for the whole family. That's right, a free book. I have 5 kids and my wife, so we got 7 free books. The rules are simple, any book without a sticker can be free. The hard back books are normally $3.99 and the paper-backs are $1.99. The kids are foodies and love to cook. They should have their own YouTube channel. We got 4 GIANT cook books by Gourmet Magazine, A Taste of Home Magazine, Martha Stewart and Jacque Pepin... all like new condition for free. One of my kids got a Dune book by Frank Herbert. A classic! They look like they were right off the press. I looked up the prices and all would have cost me over $100. There was a book sale out front with Books for 99¢ and we got a couple of those too. All-in-all, that pile of books cost me $7.00!!! Next is the warehouse sale that's going on. They have a huge warehouse with 99¢ adult books and 25¢ kids books. Thousands of books to choose from. The DVDs are 59¢ and they found some xbox 360 games. Also some comic books and a DVD Evan Almighty. Finally this Sunday and about once a month they have a bag of books sale where you can fill a Grocery bag full of the warehouse books for $5.00. I am sure I can fit more than 5 books in a Raley's grocery bag lol. My 11 year old daughter decided she wants to read the first Dune trilogy and she called up Grassroots and had them put her on a wait list. Once the books came in, the store texted us. I've had the good fortune of living in a number of cities across the US over the past few years. In each city, I'm always on the lookout for a great book store. Unfortunately, I'm always let down because none of them come close to Grassroots Books. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say: Grassroots Books is the best bookstore I've ever been in. It truly has set the bar for me. Such a great selection of old and new as well as books on all topics imaginable. Plus the books are very reasonably priced. Although this has been your policy since 2020- I have never experienced this and was STILL confused after the first clerk has said this- again, because I have never experienced this at your store after utilizing your outdoor sale for years. Secondly, I have not been underpaying for children's books outside but for you to assume that is harsh. If you would like to review all of your video data, you will find that I have always brought all of my outdoor purchases inside, placed them on the counter, and have been very honest from which section I had found the books. Alright, I am way too annoyed that I'm writing this literally... literally... a second after I got home. I called yesterday to see if they have Midnight Sun in stock. I pre-ordered seven from Amazon many moons ago and realized I was two books short (giving as gifts). I was told they had a few in stock and it was $20.something... cool. I came in today to pickup a copy and I was greeted, THEN got called out for my mask because it has a one way valve and according to the clerk "it protects you but it doesn't protect others". Mind you, clerk is wearing a very thin mask and there's a protective barrier between us. My mother was in medical field, and I have two friends that are nurses which one directly worked with COVID patients. My point is, are WE really qualified to be telling ANYONE if one mask is more protective than the other? Sure, sure, businesses can refuse service for this issue nowadays, but look, I saw FOUR people in the entire store. I'm picking up an item really quick and not roaming around the store. Also, the price I paid is higher than what I was told over the phone yesterday. Honestly, I don't really care for any of that but just the fact that I supported this store even though I know I'm paying more by going to this local business. I have sold PLENTY of items here, a LOT of them and received only $20 for literally tens of Bluray/DVD sets and couple of boxes of books. It was almost a donation to the store when I could have just dropped them off at the library for zero dollars and other would enjoy my stuff for FREE. I have ordered books here fully knowing that it will take couple of weeks to arrive even though I CAN just order them from Amazon for a lot cheaper and receive them in two days. I'm way too annoyed... this epidemic has most of us on edge, people are going cray, some folks feel entitled to do whatever the heck they want. But there are peeps like myself that follow the guidelines but hey, my mask just is not good enough for this store. Maybe I'll return to this store someday, but for now buh-bye! read more

Just when I thought I would never be able to enjoy the things I took for granted pre COVID-19, I stumbled across this outdoor used book store and I got to browse books just like old times. There is something that I love about browsing bookstores, I'm not sure whether it's the open ended-ness of the experience because you never know what you're going to find, or if it's the shelves themselves, but being able to wander tables and look at books made my heart so happy and gave me such a sense of hope, like we're going to get through this. Grassroots is a local Reno used bookstore that also has children's books, DVDs, CDs and other music. They have a HUGE selection (I found a super cool anatomy and physiology text published in 1891!), and right now everything is outside for your safe browsing pleasure. Please be advised that masks are still required. They have port-o-potties and outside hand washing stations as well which is a HUGE plus! I was out running errands yesterday and now that you can just run into McDonald's to pee my options are really limited. You can either pay over the phone or on the website but it is contactless, and they also have contactless pickup where you can call the store, tell them what you want and they'll get it and set it aside for you to pick up. What a cool and innovative way to get us all reading again! I am so happy I stumbled upon this place and plan to continue visiting through the pandemic read more

I haven't been here in a coon's age, and I'm so glad we stopped by on a day full of errands. Now they have an ongoing parking lot sale, and I scored an armful of books to read when I go to sleep at night, all for a buck a piece!! It was really fun digging through the random boxes of books to find hidden treasures, and major kudos to whoever figured out that the boxes and tables were ADA accessible. I could make it between the tables, and access all the boxes in my wheelchair, which is pretty amazing. I can't begin to tell you how unaware how many people and businesses are about the details of accessibility, and it was so refreshing to be able to browse without thinking about it... The books are not arranged in any sort of categories, so give yourself time to look, because there are plenty of boxes! Inside, I was a little disappointed in the choices, I remember having more books to choose from in my favorite categories, in fact I still have some of my very favorite pattern books that I got there several years ago. I didn't find anything inside, but I will be going back regularly to scope out the ongoing parking lot sale!! ACCESSIBILITY: I already noted their thoughtfulness in how they arranged the outdoor sale books, they are quite accessible for those who have any ADA issues. Inside the store is a bit more challenging. My husband pushes my wheelchair in tight places, and we managed ok in most of the store, but turning around by yourself in some of the aisles would be a challenge, at best. read more

Had free time this evening so I decided to do some Christmas shopping with books specifically in mind. As I approached, an employee stopped what she was doing and opened the door for me. As I wandered the store I spoke with several employees about books we loved and where we had heard about them or what they meant to us. They offered me hot tea as I wandered and I overheard them help an elderly gentleman with his purchase and taking it all out to his vehicle for him. I ended up with 8 books, a mish mash of fiction, comics, children's, craft, new and used for $45. A real steal. read more

Grassroots is easily my favorite bookstore in town. We buy books for all the kids friends for their birthdays and this is the only place we'll go. The pricing is excellent and there is a huge selection. The outdoor/warehouse sales are awesome, surprising to be able to get books even more affordably than you can inside. We went today to check out the outdoor sale, and we ended up with a couple books for each of the kids and one for me. Grassroots is a nice, well-illuminated place that is obviously created for book lovers. You will find yourself immersed in a close examination of the variety of books on the shelves here. Found this book store on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. They have a Very impressive collection on different genres, prices and even in Spanish. I did end up getting some books about rocks and about Northern California flowers. I had been looking for one for a while but didn't really want to spend $35 on a book. It was nice to have an option of getting it used and cheaper. Huge variety of books, books outside as well. Strangest books I haven't seen in other book stores. Wow, what a find. If you're looking for great prices on a wide selection of like-new books, this is it. They had a $1 and $0.25 cent sale outside, and while many of these aren't super popular books or in pristine condition, there were Harry Potter hardcovers in there in addition to a few newer releases from the last few years, which is a steal. There were also lots of children's books, mysteries/thrillers, and non-fiction out here. It was an honor system for the outdoor section (take what you want, stick it in your car, and let the front desk know how many you snagged so they can ring you up), which warmed my jaded soul and gives you an idea of the good-hearted energy this spot embodies. The interior has all the newer and more mainstream releases divided into sections, in addition to classics. I've been to my fair share of used bookstores, and the organization can sometimes be a haphazard treasure hunt, but I found this one really easy to navigate. The curation is phenomenal, the indoor books are honestly "new" in condition (as in, look like they were read once and then donated), and the prices are insane in the best way. I saw a range from $1.99 to $14.99, though the later was for the newest of releases and rare. On average, it's $3-5 per book, and that included hardcovers. The staff is beyond friendly and more than happy to look up any book you're in search of. I seriously wish I had something like this where I live, and will definitely come back if ever in Reno to once again fill my suitcase with books. Support this store. My main relationship with Grassroots Books is bringing them used books that I hope that they will buy from me. As a lifelong reader, former graduate student, and current college professor, I have a lot of books in my possession. Some of those books served a purpose during a specific point in my life but no longer bring me joy, as Mari Kondo would say. I love that I can bag them up, take them to Grassroots Books, and get a tiny bit of cash monay for them as well as the satisfaction that they might be purchased online or in the store by a new owner. The employees are so friendly and have always given me a fair price for what I bring. I love their wide selection of fiction, non-fiction, and DVDs. They sell recently published, brand new books as well as gently used books. And the employees are often very generous in handing out the cards that entitle one to a free used book of one's choice. If I had reading-age kiddos, I would be bringing them here at least once a month so that they could pick out new books. Obvi that's what libraries are for, too, but there is something so satisfying about having a book in which one can underline and write notes. Yay Grassroots! read more

My favorite bookstore in Reno! I usually swing by every weekend or two to browse through the shelves and see what I can come across. There are little treasures hidden all over the place, and I have found books here on subjects I hadn't even considered looking into, and have picked up copies of older books I have long wanted, but didn't want to pay higher prices or shipping fees to get. The company is set up in a converted warehouse, and have shelves upon shelves of books and other media, both used and new. They have baseline prices for hardback and paperback books, but many of their items are also individually priced depending on rarity, condition, and other factors. The inventory is broken out by topic type, including shelves with hundreds of DVDs and Blu-Rays, an area for kids and young adults, and a very interesting section of local authors and Nevada-related materials. The service here is very friendly, and it always seems to me that the staff genuinely enjoy what they do, and are more than willing to help and answer questions. Their prices are very cheap, and for mere dollars you can pick out a couple books or some movies. Admittedly, I have noticed that in the years since they first opened their prices have gone up a bit, and there are more individually priced items, but that is kind of the reality of doing any business, and they are still the best bargain in town as far as I know. They also buy items, should you be in the market to sell. Just be aware, as I have seen customers be surprised by this, that you aren't going to get a big chunk of change. Unless you have something rare or a big load of items, you'll most likely walk away with a few bucks or a certain number of free items from their shelves in exchange. But getting all these items does, I think, encourages you to continue building and circulating your own personal book collections. Also, one of the real draws comes a couple times a month when they do their Warehouse Sales. Tables stocked with hundreds of books, many of which are out of print, and each item marked far down in price. It can be deceptively easy to walk out with stacks of reading materials. During these sales, parking can be a bit hectic as their lot is rather small, but that is a pretty minor concern, all things considered. I cannot recommend stopping by highly enough. To me, Grassroots feels like if the old concept of the neighborhood bookstore has been taken and gotten an update, making a new sort of business model, but keeping the close, inviting sort of sense that encourages you to drop by and have a good read. read more

I don't have enough to say about this hidden gem. I have been coming here for years! Here are a few of my experiences. 1. The cursed child midnight release. There was a party! Food truck, fun and the sorting! 2. The warehouse sales! They open up this huge back room and you can get boxes. BOXES of amazing books for less than $50! Whoa. 3. The prices! I don't know how I didn't mention the prices. I read a book every 1-3 days, I eat them up. I can get an entire new four-part series for under ten dollars in lots of cases! 4. The staff, with their suggestions and friendly faces. Yes, the staff. 5. The giant children's section, my daughters have cost my the same fortune for them as I spent on my own self. 6. The smell. I'm so incredibly thankful we noticed this place on a drive home the other day! What a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon, wandering through their HUGE selection of books outdoors in the sun! The deals were too good to pass up, 99c for a book or 5$ to fill an entire bag?? We grabbed one of the brown bags the store provided for us and spent about 30 minutes wandering through the wonderfully spaced out tables of books. There was a great assortment of older books right beside newer releases and we found some great gems! I also love their mask rules that note you need to cover your mouth AND nose! I felt very safe and comfortable outside and the staff was helpful and friendly! It was great to be able to pay outside with a card before leaving. Lots of great books for kids most everything is 25 cents. I've been twice since lockdown and there are new books each time. I bought some to read and some to use for art collage. Brought in "China Rich Girlfriend" and "A Simple Favor", both in practically new condition (total cost of both books new was about $30), and I got back $7 (which was more than I anticipated actually!) So by my calculation for newer books (since both of these are pretty popular right now, with Crazy Rich Asians just coming out in theaters and A Simple Favor coming out in Sept) that are in good condition, it's about a 25% return. During "warehouse" sales where books are supposed to be about $1 if you find them in the back warehouse area, be careful, there's still stickered books back there that AREN'T $1 (I told the cashier and she said she would make sure this didn't happen again), but just a heads up! read more

As one of the only second-hand bookstores in town, Grassroots has become a second home to me. They have so many books on offer, something for everyone. The have an inside part of the store; with newer books, duplicates, recent releases, special editions etc, and an outside section with rows upon rows of used books that are SUPER cheap! And they regularly have fill-a-bag book sales on weekends, with all the outdoor boxes of books up for grabs. The outdoor bins of books can be very hit-or-miss, but they do have a lot of children's books for extremely good value.
