Our waitress was so sweet & kind- she was definitely busy and apologized for the kitchen being backed up & the slow service. Our food was great, we all enjoyed our meals. The nachos were good- the big chunks of chicken seemed like grilled chicken nuggets similar to what you get from Costco- they were still good- could have definitely used a few more pieces of chicken. We had a party of 6 on a busy Sunday and it happened that the only table was outside. Since it was a beautiful day, it wasn't a problem at all to sit outside. Started with a burnt tree honey blonde ale. Would highly recommend. It had more body and flavor than your average honey blonde and was similar to the salmon fly honey rye. Started with a cup of chicken curry soup. When it came out, I was a bit confused by its thickness. There was literally no broth at all. One of my table mates quipped "is that a dip?" . But the flavor was definitely there even if it didn't have the consistency of your typical soup or even stew. Had the sphinx burger with fries. Burger was excellent. Probably the best part was the bun, toasted and buttery and the meat was very juicy. Probably the only bad part of the meal and why I didn't give this place a 5 was the fries. We had been on the road for a few hours & this town looked so cute that we decided to stop & walk for a bit. We were hungry & stopped in this, what appeared to be a "locals" bar. We were warmly welcomed in, had a nice chat with the bartender & a local about the town & ordered a French dip to split. It was honestly one of the best that we've ever had, not sure if the beef was local but it certainly tasted fresh & the roll was so fresh tasting as well. The fries, we've never had any like them & I wish that I had asked how they made them because they were unusual looking but were amazing! I actually stopped at this place to use the bathroom and my partner looked at the menu and when I came out, he was sitting down at the table. lol Our waitress came over. She was fun and friendly. We asked her about what we should try and she recommended the shepherds pie for me and we also ordered the beef nachos. The shepherds pie was fire!!!! And very tasty and flavorful. The nachos were very good as well and a good size portion. The bar was quiet at that time, but we went early evening. Everyone was nice. The food came out in a timely fashion. If you've never been here you must try it! We dine here whenever we are in Ennis and it's always good! The food is great and so is the service, even when they are really busy! We were stopping in Ennis for food and this was the first place we found. It was about a 30 minute wait due to it being prime dinner rush, absolutely no problem. We had gotten sat and our servers name was Liz. We had a party of 5 and we had asked for water and she said that she would give us all water and we had also gotten some other drinks as well. We had waited about 40 minutes for our food. The table behind us had gotten sat after us and got their order taken after us. By this time they had gotten their water and we had only gotten our other drinks. The table behind us had gotten their food even though they ordered after us. My mom had only gotten a water and we had asked Liz for the water twice and never got it we ended up going up to the bar and asking for one. Liz had walked past our table multiple times completely ignoring us and our EMPTY cups at the end of the table. Then when we finally got our food it was cold. Like it had been ready for a while. I asked if I could have ranch with my fries at the beginning and I didn't get it. When we got our food she had asked if we needed anything else, we did have a full list of things because we were waiting for 40 minutes. And our refill cups we had changed one of the drinks and I'd assume she didn't hear me so I had repeated that the Shirley Temple we were wanting to switch to a coke. She had gotten annoyed that I had asked that, I said please and everything. We had complained to the guy at the front seating people and he was super nice and super understanding. Horrible experience. All I really wanna say is the service was so bad never got my food. Until the very end when we were asked about our bill that's when we said we never got the rest of our food so they tried giving me the sandwich which looked like it was sitting under a heat lamp for god knows how long. I told the server I wasn't paying for that and she proceeds to say that they're busy, which that's not my fault I'm a paying patron. So if you are short staffed your management if failing you. The last thing she said was since she brought the food out and it was made we would have to pay for it. What customer service!! I wouldn't have fed that old burnt sandwich to even my pet. Stopped over on our way to Glacier from Yellowstone! It happened to be a Sunday so options were limited. Really limited considering we had our dog with us. So glad we chose Gravel Bar! As a fam we had nachos, Shepard's pie and a burger plus shared chips and salsa and some beer. A total win! This is the it place to go after a long day of fishing. They sometimes have live music, play too much Grateful Dead music , and have good drink specials. The food is okay. Many of their menu items are not available when you request them. We went here multiple times only because there isn't really anywhere else to go for dinner. The servers never got our orders correct , but they happily fixed them. I think they were overwhelmed and under trained. The atmosphere wasn't too friendly towards "out of towners ". The locals bitched about how the visitors made places too crowded. We also heard local fishing guides at the bar making fun of how stupid their clients were. We just had dinner there and it was fantastic from every aspect...from the rustic atmosphere, the excellent service and the wonderful food!! Our server (we didn't get his name but he's the engineering student in AZ), was FANTASTIC! He kept our glasses refilled and checked on us at appropriate time intervals. What a nice find - we highly recommend . At first we were hesitant b/c we thought it was a bar and was looking for good food ... to our surprise what a great place to eat ! My partner ordered the pulled pork burger , and a 1000 miles later he is still raving about what a great and which that was . The pork was tasty and the sauce delightful . I ordered the hamburger and wow it was delicious ! Cooked to perfection, juicing ( messy to eat) and the bun was yummy ! Absolutely and unexpectedly impressed. We hit town at 3pm, the dead hour for food service. With two hungry toddlers in tow and the risk of hungry meltdowns high, we did a quick sweep through town to assess our options and were grateful to see Gravel Bar open. First off, props to this place for being perhaps the most COVID conscious business on main street. They are going above and beyond requirements, and deserve serious respect for doing so. Masks, plexiglass, social distancing, open doors, hand sanitizer stations, outdoor dining [weather permitting], and even posting the phone number and menu out front to facilitate to go orders without having to step inside if you don't want to! As to the food, I definitely recommend the Sphinx burger, it was delicious! As were the fries! While I could not partake at the time for personal reasons, their selection of draft beers looked wonderful especially for the area! Would definitely return if I end up back in town.
