Food 5 stars- The food here is awesome. We come every year while on vacation. The restaurant has changed ownership many times but the food remains great. There is a bar side and a restaurant side. Service has always been attentive and friendly. There is also a casino inside with fun games. Perfect place to hangout after a long day of fishing. Lodging- 2 stars. We used to stay in the cute cabins until about 3 years ago. Everything on the inside is outdated. It didn't feel clean. The bathroom was mildewed and smelled . I hope they choose to remodel the inside of the cabins because they do look cute from outside. But the inside does leave a lot to be desired. So we no longer stay there, but we eat almost all meals there because they are the bomb. I think management hasn't redone the rooms because there is not a whole lot of selection of where you can stay here and everything fills up very quickly, regardless of the quality because it is a smaller town. And now with the new Madison TV show I'm sure more people will be coming out, and there will be even less places to stay. read more

We have been going to the Sportsman's lodge for a little over a decade. It used to be a great little diner to get fish and chips, a burger, awesome fish tacos, and some of the best pulled pork sandwiches. We went again tonight and while the cattleman's cutlet (aka chicken fried steak) was tasty enough, and my wifes' meatball sandwhich has some Italian nuances to it, the menu has become rather boring. Even the fish and chips are no longer on the menu???? Clearly the new management has chosen to make this just your average diner, with a below average menu. Why they put mussels on the appetizer menu is mind boggling. Really? Mussels in Ennis? Scary. Abby did a formidable job trying to keep up. She and only one other waiter were frantically running around, while the manager stood around watching for the most part. Next time we will go into town, where the G-bar and the Longbranch Saloon have a more diverse menu and better staffed. Not to mention Burnt Tree Pizza! read more

We booked a cabin here on our way to visit Yellowstone and unfortunately wouldn't stay again. Our first cabin had a toilet left in terrible condition, but the front desk staff was very helpful and quickly moved us to another. The staff deserves credit for being kind and responsive, but the cabins themselves are rough. They're old, musty, and not very well maintained -- both inside and outside. Even though the log style looks charming in photos, in person they smell and feel worn out. Overall: helpful staff, but the accommodations really need updating and better cleaning. read more

my husband's 1st steak came out burnt and my fish was on the dark side. If you have a hiccup comp a drink or something and refire both meals. When a couple goes out to eat they want to eat together not in shifts. The server brought out the burnt steak, why , you knew it was you even said so. Tartar sauce is dill sauce which is fine but describe it on the menu. My husband's second steak came out cooked correctly but was cold. Waitress bartender told us we had bad energy and hoped my husband had a better day. We were not rude but expected better in the food and not told we had bad energy. ps we are locals and not tourons and I am a professional cook in an amazing restaurant. I ordered a chicken Parm the chicken was burnt and the pasta wasn't even cooked. They had only two chefs cooking and the tables weren't even clean they were still plates on other tables. We are staying in Ennis while visiting Yellowstone. Restaurants are minimal in this area. This is a small and simple restaurant, I entered with minimal expectations, however; I was pleasantly surprised! The wait was about 10 minutes on a Monday at 6pm. The staff is very friendly and provided amazing service! The food-well the food was just perfection! My husband ordered the pork chop and I ordered the salmon. Both dishes were beyond expectations! Great clam chowder, really good salad greens with berries and watermelon vinegarette, amazing carne nachos - enough for 4 people for sure. I asked for my buffalo burger to be cooked Mid-rare and it was solidly well done. They would have recooked it, but I told the server we didn't want to make a stink about it. (My wife hates it when I complain about the food or service!) Our server was hustling and really personable but just couldn't seem to keep our waters full despite asking several times. We were on a road trip in Montana and needed some lunch. Several places that had been recommended to us were closed. We asked a local where a good lunch spot was and were told Sportsman Lodge was a good choice. At first glance, it appeared to be a small diner type restaurant and made me think of a movie (can't remember what the name is though, lol). The interior was quaint and the decor matched the area. We were immediately greeted and had fabulous, friendly service. One in our group had the summer salad. It was reported to be very good with walnuts, strawberries, and goat cheese in a bed of greens and grilled chicken. One had the build your own bison burger and onion rings which was also reported as very good. Fish and chips were ordered by another, but he substituted a salad for the chips. He was pleasantly surprised at how good both were. I had a southwest burger and tater tots. I normally don't eat many burgers, but this one sounded good from the menu description and boy was the description on spot! I received a very large patty on a fresh bun with melted swiss, pickled jalapenos and grilled onions. This could possibly be the best hamburger I have ever had! All in all this is a great lunch spot. Servings are very large so either come hungry or expecting to get a to-go box! read more

If I could leave a zero.... I would. Got there at 4:14 to dinner and no one else eating in the restaurant and we were early so that's ok. Took 15 minutes to get the waitress to take our order and no other patrons are there. I didn't think anyone could mess up a half chicken. 25 minutes later (we are the only ones in the restaurant) another couple comes in and we still don't even have our bread or salad that came with the meal. Then our meal comes out no salad or bread and my chicken didn't even look cooked, the skins wasn't anywhere near a cooked or brown tone and it was luke warm. Meanwhile no salads and I had to send the chicken back and then our salads came. It took 10 more minutes for my uncooked looking chicken to come back and it was hot, had no seasoning or appeal to want to eat it and my plate came back with my old fork on the plate and now I have luke warm mash potatoes and broccoli! Took 2 bites of the chicken and didn't eat the rest of the food. My husbands roast beef looked great but also was luke warm and no seasoning on the meat. We have eaten there for over 10 years every time we come town and the food was fantastic. Don't know what happened to this restaurant but the waitress had no clue as to how to serve food and the food was awful. read more

We stopped by for dinner based on the reviews and options on the menu. The hostess was very nicevand sat us at the table very quickly. The restaurant looked to be well managed and clean. We started the meal off with an order of Buffalo Chicken Wings. The three of us thought the order would come with 10 - 12 given the $11 price point.......instead you get seven. The wings were nicely flavored but unfortunately a bit on the softer side...could have benefitted. For the main course we ordered Pasta Bolognese, Mean woman Pasta, an Chicken Fried Steak. Both pasta dishes were fine. Nothing special to write about. The Chicken Fried Steak was a unique dish. The plate arrived with a huge slab of meat, a tiny portion of potatoes and veggies (as compared to the amount of meat). The two bites of potatoes were good and the veggies were very much overcooked. Now on to the chicken fried steak.....worst I have ever had. I am not sure what "steak" they used but it did not have the the texture of tenderized steak in my opinion. I took two bites and called it done! Order at your risk... All three plates did come with salads which we never received until we asked about them. The waitress casually agreed that she forgot to bring them out. She did offer to bring them out or place them in a to go container. We opted for two salads to be delivered. I was sure hoping for a great meal for my husbands birthday. We were just passing through town and decided to try the sportsman's. If you look at my reviews you'd see that I am fair and always share a positive. In this it was the atmosphere. That is about it. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and my husband ordered the shepherd pie. After we placed our order we waited and waited and waited. Nearly 45 minutes later the waitress came to apologize that she failed to give our order to the kitchen. Our order came out very quickly. My cheesesteak had no cheese in it and the shepherds pie was absolutely inedible. It was assembled like no shepherds pie we'd ever seen. We will probably not be passing through again. I can honestly say this is the best food, and our favorite place in the entire state. The service is stellar, the food is amazing, the portions are massive, and the drinks from the bar are creative and perfectly executed. One weekend trip and 2 stops at Sportsman's Lodge. Both times great food, atmosphere and service. The bartender Kenzi is awesome! My friend has severe celiac and Kenzi was knowledgeable and thoughtful in explaining the menu. My friend both times didn't have reactions so the kitchen must be top notch. If you have any food issues traveling/eating out can be extremely hard. Feel comfortable and safe at Sportsman's! Also the Huckleberry Cocktails are sublime! read more

By far the best stay in Ennis! I love the rustic cabin feel and I was absolutely blown away by the food! I had all three meals here and every single one was out of this world. The beef tenderloin with blue cheese cream sauce was my favorite!! The staff was so friendly and I only lost a small fortune playing slots in the bar. This place is a sh*t show! Avoid at all costs. The issues are endless. The first thing we noticed was the screen on the front door was ripped. The bed was terrible! The room itself smelled musty. The electrical was ancient with only one outlet available in the whole room. The portable air conditioner was sitting on a chair and the vent for the hot air was loose from the window and hot air was coming back into the room. I requested an extra bath towel. The girl at the front desk promised that she or the manager would drop them at our room, this never happened. The office closed early so they didn't have to take any complaints. This was close to if not the worst meal I've ever had at a restaurant. The servers seemed burdened by us being there, our first server forgot we were even there and they took about 15 minutes to come back to us to take our order meanwhile the dinning room was only half full. I ordered the "Shepards pie" but I wouldn't call it Shepard pie at all. This was a pitiful excuse for Shepards pie by any standards. The Texas toast was burnt and flavorless. This was suggested from a friend of ours. So we decided to try it. We showed up as lunch was ending and dinner was beginning. They said we could order apps then wait until dinner is starting they would get us ready to order. Mind you staff was VERY nice and outgoing. So we did NOT feel rushed or a nuisance. Our server tan her butt off. She was on her game. There was 6 of us. Food....the table got 2 apps both were 2 different types of poutine. One with brown gravy and one with country sausage gravy. This was a divided table on which was the best. The meat is all delivered from the local, 1 min down the road, butcher. All the meat is also from all their local farmers. So you can only imagine how outstanding our protein was. 2 got the steaks and raved the entire time they were scarfing it down. Someone got the burger, I swear it was and inch thick. We checked in late and went directly to our room. Outdoor lighting was minimal by the room numbers, so it did make it a bit more difficult to find our room. Once we found it we were greeted to the lights on inside and the paperwork and key waiting for us. We had a clean and comfortable stay. The beds were comfortable. The room was spacious. We were able to park right outside our door. Overall, it was a relaxing stay on the way to Yellowstone. We would stay again on another trip through town. read more

Worst French dip ever. Was nothing more than a roast ground up and dried out served on a hot dog bun.

The Lodge: This summer I was able to stay here on two different occasions. Each time I was in a different area of the lodge. Hotel Rooms: These rooms at the north end of the property, they look like normal hotel rooms, except they are a bit larger and decorated with a fishing theme, so cute. Cabins: Surprisingly they are the same price, as the regular rooms. The cabins are quaint and cute, the room we were in had hard wood floors and looked like a cabin on the inside too. Both rooms had: TV, cable, a fridge, microwave, desk area, A/C, heat (but we dint use it, it was summer), a place where we could hang our waders, an area outside with chairs, screen door (wonderful for airing out the room, especially if your there for more than a few days), and most important... they were clean. You should also know: They have special rooms for pets, and they even have corrals for your horses, seriously. The Restaurant: Clean, curious servers, lodge like atmosphere, and delicious food... need I say more? At one time or another we ordered off all three of the menus, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast: What you would expect of a downhome, old fashioned breakfast. Crispy chicken fried steak, savory gravy, perfect eggs, and melt in your mouth pancakes. Our food was served quickly and correctly the first time, and I'm definitely a high maintenance kind of guest. Soon we learned we could also order breakfast in the bar, BONUS! Lunch: Yummest burgers and you can get a salad instead of fries, ahhh They had other good dishes there too, hamburger steak, salads, sandwiches, and a different special every day that comes with a side at a very reasonable price. Dinner: Wayyyy better than what I initially expected. These dinners are fabulous. One evening we had the prime rib, and it was cooked perfectly, the kind where you definitely eat the fat. Nom nom nom! I saw the lady next to get the ahi, and it was cooked blue and looked amazing. Everything was delicious. Bar and Casino: They have a special bar menu, or you can order from the regular menu in the restaurant. Drinks are reasonably priced and the barmaids were friendly and attentive. They also had a large selection of specialty beers on draft. There is a back patio with chairs and tables were you can smoke (if you smoke) or it's just a great place to enjoy Montana's pink sunsets. When we go back to Ennis, we will stay here again. It is so close to the Madison River for spectacular fly fishing, Bear Trap Canyon for tubing, Virginia City is only a few minutes away, Ennis Lake for spin casting & swimming, the golf course, and Yellowstone is only an hour away. Also, during our stay there was some work being done on the buildings, when we asked our waitress what they were doing, she said the property had new owners and they were making all kinds of upgrades and renovations. I can't wait to see the changes when we fish Montana next year. read more

I give it zero stars for a lousy overpriced steak. My brothers give it 2-3 Stars because of the good soup. Welcome to Montana where they can cook amazing soup, but not steak? I have always assumed/experienced that certain states simply grill better steaks than others. For example, a steak from Utah might pale in comparison to one from Texas, Alaska, or Illinois. With all the ranches in Montana I assumed they must know their steaks. I expected they'd have skill at grilling delicious and affordable steaks. Boy was I wrong on all three counts. The Ribeye was small and cost $27 even though it came from local ranches. Honestly, it was the worst Ribeye steak I've ever eaten. I kept spitting large pieces out into my napkin. Dry Sunday chuck roasts are more tender. Not only was it poorly seasoned and ultra chewy, it arrived resembling medium well rather than medium rare. C'mon guys there should be more than a faint hint of pink in medium rare. My brothers loved the clam chowder and French onion soup and admittedly those were well made. My starter salad had gritty sand in the dressing and I've already mentioned the disappointing steak. The best part of my whole meal was a plain baked potato with nothing on it. I'm glad they didn't salt or butter it because they might have messed it up. The restaurant was clean, well lit, and our waitress was very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. She mentioned that they have an abbreviated menu right now as they are currently revamping their whole menu (not a moment too soon). Let's hope the new menu helps. read more

After asking several people in town if there were any food options open, the only option, other than the gas station, was the Sportsman's Lodge bar. We dined in the bar side because they were able to make pizzas and that was all the food they had available. The pizza is frozen from a vendor like DiGiorno's and it satiated our hunger.
