When my [now] husband and I, first discussed getting engaged after 6+ years of dating, my first thought was: its time to start looking at rings! Listen, after 6+ years of dating, my hubby knows me well enough to not choose something by himself. Gray & Davis is truly an antique jewelry mecca with great service and a range of price-points. The women running the booth are extremely knowledgeable about their wares, which span from the 1700s to the mid-20th century. My partner and I were torn between two engagement rings - a two-tone art nouveau piece and an art deco white gold mount (which would need to have stones put in). For their mounts, they apparently source all of their stones from antiques, as well, adding to the air of authenticity and perhaps mitigating ethical concerns about conflict diamonds. Ultimately, we chose the ready-made art nouveau ring, and they knocked off $55 at the check-out as a token of good will. Wrapped it up in an adorable vintage-style box and we were good to go. I love this place! It may be small but it has a great selection-- I worked with Ali to find the perfect wedding band to go with a very unusual engagement ring. She is very knowledgeable and happy to answer all of your questions, and is super responsive by email or phone. This team of ladies in the Diamond District are as good as the hype suggested in other reviews. Although they didn't have the rose gold chain I was looking for, they pointed me to a vendor across the isle who was equally as pleasurable to buy from. If you are looking for vintage, unique jewelry from around the 16th to early 20th centuries, this is a perfect place to begin your quest. You can also email Gray to see if she can describe anything she might have in stock to match your specifications. I emailed her in the morning and got a response within a few hours; great communication and service. Should you desire a particular gold chain and it's the wrong shade of gold, they can dip it in the correct color for around $40-$60 dollars on average; it just depends on the strand, length, and amount of gold it would take to get the job done. On a side note, there were a few engagement rings that were astonishingly affordable and drop dead gorgeous. I'm all ready spoken for and set in the wedding/engagement rings department. But wow! Well, every other review of this place gives them 5 stars, so they really don't need my review saying how awesome this place is, but I'll give it anyway. :) My first encounter with Gray was a little over a year ago when I first got engaged and was very excited to start my search for a wedding band. My fiance had given me his great-grandmother's Edwardian solitaire that I fell in love with immediately. Well, I wanted an antique vintage band to go with my antique E-ring, so I did a little research and cam across Gray & Davis. I went down to browse, and met Gray, who took one look at my E-ring and could tell me spot-on just about everything about it. VERY knowledgeable. She then went on to show me lots of beautiful options, all within my budget that could go with my ring. She never pressured me to go above my budget, and was so patient with me. I went back several more times as it was so far in advance of my wedding, and I wasn't immediately able to pick one out. As I said I went back several times to try pieces and Ali, who also helped me, was just as patient and attentive as I tried more pieces and narrowed my choices down. I finally settled on a stunning band with 7 diamond chips that Ali gave me a fantastic price for. But not only that, she recommended a jeweler that then did custom engraving on the sides of the band to match the engravings on my E-ring. It took a couple days longer than Ali initially told me it would to get the engraving done, but it was WELL WORTH the wait. The ring is absolutely stunning and matches my E-ring beautifully! Ali Cervellero at Gray & Davis is an unbelievable jewerly designer! This is coming from someone who is very particular and difficult to please. I have worked with Ali on several pieces over the last 6 years. The first was a "push present" for my wife after our 1st child was born. I simply showed her a picture of a very intricate ring from Tiffanys that I wanted to get for her with our son's birthstone. She came back with something 10 times better than the picture I gave her, it was amazing and made my wife cry when I gave it to her on her first Mother's Day. The 2nd item was also a push present for the birth of our daughter, which happened to be in April, birthstone = diamond. In this case, Ali came up with an awesome idea of taking the 1st diamond I ever gave my wife, pre-engagement, which a was a solitaire necklace, and create a new necklace with 3 diamonds. The new necklace would consist of a big beautiful diamond in the middle and two smaller ones on each side, such that one day we could give the 2 side diamonds, one of which was the first diamond I gave my wife, to our daughter for her 1st pair of diamond earings. So not only a great a designer, but a personal touch with great ideas on how to present a gift. This one was a huge hit as well, especially given the idea of it also being a future gift for our daughter. Finally, this past winter I asked Ali to help me design a special new pair of diamond earrings for my wife's 40th birthday, but I didn't want just the typical pair of solitaire diamond earrings. Instead she came up with an awesome diamond halo idea and even hand delivered to us in order to surprise my wife while we had an intimate early birthday dinner. In the limited conversations we had before he bought it all I really knew was that I wanted something with a past. He found these two, and bought the most beautiful ring. My first experience with them was to have my ring sized. Having never sized a ring before I was pretty terrible at knowing what to do, and Bernard and Gray were amazing with getting me through it. When it came time to buy our wedding bands we went back to the dynamic duo. My fiance found the perfect band amidst their beautiful vintage collection, and they did an excellent job of modifying my mother's band so that I could wear it. I dropped of a vintage rattle for machine engraving on a wednesday and was told it takes about two hours and that it would be ready for pickup the next day. I called back on Friday (as I had not yet received a call telling me it was ready) and was told it wasn't ready but that it would be ready on Saturday. I told them I wasn't going to be able to pick it up on Saturday so no worries - just have it ready by Monday because I had to have it by then. I called back on Monday and it wasn't ready. I was told they would check with the jeweler and call me right back. I called back an hour later (again, I didn't receive a call) and was berated by the owner Gray for calling so many times and getting frustrated that my item wasn't ready DAYS after when I was told it would be. When I politely asked what the delay was the response I received was a snotty "have you heard about the hurricane?" Why yes, indeed I had heard about the hurricane which had happened more than a week prior to me dropping off my item. Had there been residual delays caused by the storm I could certainly understand but then I shouldn't have been told that my item would be ready the next day. I never once became angry and still the owner suggested that I take my business elsewhere (which I will certainly do in the future). Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine being that late/behind and then getting angry at the customer for calling to check in for updates. Do not use for engraving services. read more

Can I possibly express how great this experience was? I had been looking at wedding bands online, but got a pang that maybe I should try them on in person, but jewelry stores intimidate me (it's basically a bank vault, but prettier, and I know nothing about jewelry). I've also always loved vintage everything--jewelry, clothes, etc, so decided I should give vintage jewelry shopping a try. I went to a couple of boutiques, but everything about Gray & Davis was amazing. It's beautiful, extremely well-curated (small, but well-chosen), and Ali and her husband are so warm and fun and cool. While other stores didn't engage with my fiancé, who awkwardly read on his phone while I perused, Ali made sure to talk to him about what he wanted, as well as his other interests. For someone intimidated by the fine jewelry experience, I couldn't have felt more welcomed, listened to, or cared for. I found an amazing ring with an engraving from 1934, and my fiancé got a beautiful custom band. I just picked them up today and had such a good time just shooting the shit with those two, who I would def be friends with. Wonderful store! My now husband and I got my vintage engagement ring from here and I really could not be more pleased with it! I knew it was the one for me when I first saw it in the case. I told them I was interested in that particular piece and when I came back with my husband they had cleaned up the ring and made it look fantastic. SOLD! It was a no brainer, we knew we found the one! I can't say much about the transaction itself as my husband took care of that part! However, I do have to minus one star for the lack of follow up after buying the ring! We both felt that once the ring was purchased we were not treated as well, compared to the times we came in and were simply interested customers. I can't rave enough about the wonderful service I received at Gray&Davis. My fiance had wonderful things to say about working with Ali to select my stunning art deco 1930s engagement ring. I have purchased a beautiful french cut diamond eternity band here (which is like finding a unicorn) and a really unusual 18k signet ring. They kindly offer layway and don't pressure your payments like some other places that make you sign contracts. The sales people are very sweet and just as excited to sell you a piece as you are to purchase. The prices are a tad high, my only real comment. I was looking for a vintage ring for almost 6 months with my boyfriend. I basically wanted a ring that I had made up in my... based on a mix of styles I had seen. I want east and west, baguettes and an emerald stone. I wanted a low setting. I wanted my wedding band to ultimately kiss the engagement ring, no large gap. I never wanted an engagement ring but I wanted something beautiful, original and antique that I would wear as a wedding ring. As we usually roll it was days before our wedding and we didn't have any rings so we went to the diamond district. As a girl who doesn't care about cut clarity or color I was skeptical but we just sauntered into Gray and Davis and it was all the most beautiful antique rings I could imagine. They had deco, Victorian, we loved everything in the shop so we just had to find what suited us the best. We ended up settling on a beautiful Edwardian ring with multiple old mine diamonds and intricate metal work done in platinum. It looked beautiful on my finger. The staff was great and never made us feel like they were trying to up-sell as the other ring we were considering was more expensive. They were super attentive and made us feel like they wanted us to have the ring that was meant for us. The price was reasonable and I ended up getting a ring that was much more beautiful than I imagined I'd have. It was so much fun every time I look at my ring I'm reminded of how much I love my husband and what fun we had scrambling for rings before the wedding. My grandmother wore a small rose gold watch, wedding band and pendant for almost 70 years of her 94 year life. I was extremely close with her and when she passed away I was given these items by my family. Although I had no use for them physically these items had great sentimental value and they sat in a drawer for a many years. I came across Gray and Davis after a girl I met at a party kept talking about how she had an old ring from her grandma reformed to something she could wear. I decided to let Gray and Davis make something for me out of those 3 items that a guy could wear. Initially I thought they would suggest cufflinks or a tie clip, etc.... but when they sent me a detailed sketch of a cuff bracelet with a hammered finish and my grandmas initials inscribed on the underside made from the gold of the original items I was beyond impressed. I wear this bracelet every day. I get complements on it all the time. I am certain my beloved grandma would approve of what was done and how she is still with me every day.
