This place is pretty hidden. They make you check literally everything before going in the room with the clothes. Don't go right before closing -- they are very strict about not trying anything on close to closing time and making sure everyone looks like they'll be done. I went to the Ramy Brook sale and was impressed with the selection and prices. This sample sale is in a relatively hidden location on the 2nd floor of a building in the garment district. There is relatively little advertising and often no line. The space is HUGE. I visited for the Veronica Beard sample sale and there was a lot of merchandise, but still a lot of space even after considering that. Jeans were a great price at $30. However, as a longtime shopper at 260, I was APPALLED to see the actual quality of the merchandise. There are signs everywhere to check merchandise before buying because of potential damages but there was not one blazer, shirt , or dress that did not have a missing button, pulled thread, or the worst offender :literally the white stuffing in shoulder pads protruding out of a blazer. Under their pricing, the blazer would have been $125. That should not even be sellable. Again, I know sample sales sell samples and there are items often not in pristine condition, but this was the case with almost every item (except for jeans) read more

Waste of time. I went to a sample sale of Cynthia Rowley and a couple swim/fitness lines that was empty at 3:30pm. Most clothes are size 0-4, with nothing over an 8 save a couple of shirts, one of which was missing a button. There were at least a dozen employees stationed throughout the vast space, but not one said a word to me or even smiled. The fitting room attendant just watched me try things on, and then when I asked if I could leave the pieces with her she said I had to rerack them myself. Prices were no steal: $100-150 for a dress, $70 skirts, $30 yoga pants, $20 swim separates, $30-50 shirts. Honestly, you're better off going to Bloomingdale's sale rack, which has the added benefit of not feeling like you've entered a jail. read more

These sample sales are pretty good = ) They are strict about having friends cut the line...do not have someone join you if they are watching, you will be kicked off! Other than that, Tory Burch sale was crazy - I arrived 2 hrs. beofre open time and I managed to get in, there was a line for shoes but the prices were all great. I am a petite girl so most sizes are 6,8,10 + not many 0,2,4 sizes. I also went to Jcrew - all the clothes either had holes or were written in a sharpie "SAMPLE" which sucked because they were really nice clothes. However, I managed to buy 2 dresses and sent them to the tailor to have the wholes fixed and they are gorgeous (never went into production samples). Overall good buys but can be difficult to find small sizes! read more

I have been to a few of the sample sales here: Theory (twice haha) and Comptoir des Cotonniers. I must say, there are a lot of items here, but I was definitely expecting the prices to be a bit cheaper. For most items, you're going to pay minimum around $50 (and the high end of the price range is about $120-$150 or so, give or take). For example, the Comptoir tops (even a plain cotton long sleeve) were $65 on opening day. There are definitely equivalent if not better sales at the department stores, the boutiques, or online sales. Everything is new with tags, which is great. Prices do get slashed after a few days of the sale, but if you do want to bring stuff back for an exchange, they based the exchange on the price that the item is at currently, not for when you bought it (kinda sucks). I have bought a Theory turtleneck dress for around $50, and a Comptoir shirt for about $44. Decent prices but still not rock bottom as we all hope! There are always a lot of pants at these sales, but I'm always a bit disappointed that the prices are still like $50+ ... for plain black pants or something. Also, communal fitting room.... they are pretty strict about not trying on stuff on the main floor. read more

In terms of doing a review for this place, the one thing to get out of the way is: it is a sample sale site. It is expected to be messy. It is expected to have an air of craziness. It is expected to be uncomfortable. However, I love this sample sale company. I have been a frequenter of Clothinline's sample sales, and from a sample sale perspective where you want to find high end items for cheap, this is a great place. I love that though I am a mere teacher, I get to wear fabulous clothes and feel great because of places like Clothingline where I can always find a deal. Clothingline offers a really good selection of designers, and on the occasions where there are lines, it is usually well worth the wait. Okay, so it gets messy. Okay, so the clothes sometimes end up on the floor. But there are people constantly on the floor tidying up or organizing or adding new pieces, and I appreciate the large number of staff that is available to make the sample sale experience a little more manageable. Beggars can't be choosers, and for someone on a budget who loves fashion mags and fashion blogs, Clothingline offers the opportunity for the modest-salaried to feel like a million bucks. read more

This place is hit or miss. I've gotten some great deals here on a few fabulous things, but more than 75% of the time, the selection is not great and / or it features mostly items that are hideous or damaged. The lines can be terrible (1 hour waits), and the dressing room is just a bunch of mirrors lined up next to each other, so get ready to strip down right next to the stranger beside you. A note of caution, though - be very, very careful when they are ringing you up at the register, as their registers are old school (no scannable bar codes), so the personnel (who are mostly careless idiots) must enter in each item by hand. One time I was there, they rang up my purchase and added a zero on the end, turning my $400 purchase into a $4,000 one. I didn't notice when I signed the receipt. I noticed the mistake on my credit card bill 2 days later, and when I called the store, I was put through to the manager, who told me that the store was quite busy, and she wouldn't be able to look into this multi thousand dollar mistake for several days (!!). Luckily, my credit card company intervened and I got my money back. Shady. read more

If you go unprepared, you will probably have a not so great experience. If you understand that: - On opening day, especially for hot-ticket items, there are going to be lines - You are going to have to check coats, bags, etc. - Fitting room only allows 10 pieces and you are standing in your birthday suit and undies with around thirty other women you will be fine... I just walked away from the Theory SS with some great, classic pieces - total retail cost of $2000 - for around $600. If that's not a steal, I don't know what is. On the first day, they had a great selection of classic items - you have to try on as sizes are going to vary depending on the piece. Long story short, lots of sizes, styles to pick from. Obviously, this is going to dwindle as the days go on. Definitely worth it. read more

In comparison to other sample sale venues, this one is kinda meh. It hosts a few good brands, but not often, and the merchandise tends to be blah, repetitive and irregular. If they're selling designer bags, they hold them behind a counter where you have to wait in a separate line to look at them one at a time. Same thing with shoes, there's a shoe corral where you have to wait in line to get in and a (usually kinda inattentive and rude) staff member will hand you the shoes you want to try. It's a really weird and inefficient process and you end up waiting forever; usually the shoes aren't nice enough to warrant the wait. There was a Naeem Khan dress sale here and I saw line wrap around an avenue; I'd never go to a busy sale because knowing how disorganized they are, you'd end up waiting half the day. You can find some decent stuff randomly, but I wouldn't go with high hopes. read more

I've come to a few sample sales here over the years and always find a massive selection of clothing at great prices. Yesterday, I got a couple of Bonobos blazers (really sharp!) for $95 each, plus a great sweatshirt for $35. Jackpot! I could complain about the way some of the clothes are treated, or the lack of proper fitting rooms, but I really don't expect much from a sample sale. Mostly, I'm just happy to get fine rags at a fraction of the price, so this place is great. Hopefully, I'll catch one more sale before I leave the city. read more

The sample sale was a New York phenomenon I almost wasn't prepared for. Everyone checks their bags and dignity at the door, then goes into a large room where racks of clothes hang. Apparently some events have dressing rooms, but they merely had mirrors available in the big room when I went. (Wear a tank top, etc. if you want to check if things fit!) My J. Crew sample sale experience here was pretty cool. First, I got some clothes I liked for myself. Second, I *thought* I was getting four pairs of pants for myself, as well. I figured that maybe for the women's dress pants they put sizing in inches, like jeans. Well, I knew my measurements for jeans, and these pants were about $10 each! Fast-forward to trying them on at home, finding extra fastenings in the crotch area, and determining they are men's pants that don't quite fit me right. I then found out that three guy friends have the same measurements I do, and I gave them pants that came with a funny story. :) read more

These lines be cray for some of the more popular sample sales (Club Monaco, Tory Burch, Theory, to name a few). The staff outside does a decent job of making sure the people in line aren't in the way of regular pedestrian traffic. However, sometimes they can be a tad bit on the rude side. Inside, you go up the stairs and end up at the coat check, where you are usually required to check your coat and large bag. Most of the sales (if not all) don't have fitting rooms and you just see people borderline stripping in the corner if they're desperate. The population can be both greedy, possessive, and aggressive (as is with most sample sales). The place is actually kept quite neat for a sample sale, since there are so many employees. Clothing line is probably better in terms of space and flow, but I prefer sales at 260 Sample Sale still. read more

Bargain shopping is always a bit of work but getting a Theory dress for $30 ain't no joke! Love that I can get a bunch of cute work clothes that I have to wear (but don't like to) for a decent price. They rotate the designers frequently and have a dressing room to try stuff on (communal so don't go commando) before you buy. Most of the stuff is in good condition but please examine the clothes carefully before you buy. Sales are final and you don't want to take home a pair of pants with a giant tear in the crotch or something. Downsides are that they have weird hours so be sure to make sure they're open before heading over. Also, they don't let you take your bag and jacket in. read more

That said, this place is just like any other sample sale space: on the bad days you'll walk away with nothing to add to to your look but bruises from encounters with your fellow shoppers. read more

I've been to 2 of their sales. The first was Theory where I didn't really find anything I loved and was willing to pay reduced but still fairly expensive prices for. That was a reasonably calm sale. There was no line. But I left empty-handed. The last sale I went to was a blowout end of summer kind of sale with a variety of designers. Got there probably a little over an hour after it opened, waiting about 15-20 minutes in a line on the sidewalk. Inside was pretty crazy, as expected. But they had a pretty good selection of interesting items. Lots of Theory pants for $10 but no fitting room open for this particular sale so that was a tough one to navigate. Also had dresses, tops, bathing suits, skirts. I snagged a Nanette Lepore top and skirt for 30 each. Sadly, the skirt was too small. I didn't like that some of the items didn't have size labels so you literally had to guess if it would fit. And the ones that did have size labels weren't that helpful..a lot of these items run small. There were a lot of bright colors at this one which I appreciated. Some of the staff was a bit rude and scary, yelling at you for leaving unwanted items by the line. It was so crazy there though that putting it back where it belongs may have taken like 10 minutes. They do have fitting rooms but depending on the sale, they may close them. So basically depending on the designer and prices, the sales vary. If you like shopping and snagging bargains, it's worth the mess, waiting, etc. I like having the opportunity to find designer stuff at reduced prices. Just be careful and check the item carefully for any defects and hope there's a fitting room available. read more

Clothingline has been around for awhile and is one of the better sample sales. It's organized for one. Two, the stock changes very quickly usually about every two weeks. Three, the brands are well known from Theory and Calypso to Free People and Havaianas. Four, the clothes are in good condition (no junky crap that is defective). And five, the sale is a large open floor that is not too crowded or chaotic. There is even a communal dressing room. Minus one star for having to check in your bags and jackets/sweaters. You end up feeling like a criminal before you even enter the sale. Minus another star for everything still being overly priced. These are samples and surpluses! I will emerge broker than when I was first stepped in. I thought the point of a sample sale was to get designer duds and gems at a fraction of the cost, not to still pay a 400% markup. Sigh. This week's sale of Helmut Lang and Rag & Bone was pretty good. Really nice suits, trench coats, cigarette pants, skinny jeans, flirty dresses, and tank tops to make you look and feel like a million dollars. Original prices were like $565 and discounts were anywhere from 40-65% off. Pretty good, I guess. Come here on a mission and you can score big time. Otherwise, the sales are sort of unexciting. The place ends up looking like a dry cleaners and with my purse and jacket checked in at the front door, I end up feeling a little like I'm missing my security blanket. read more

For an B&M sample sale store, Clothingline is decent. Usually it's more or less organized by size and brands. But don't expect to walk away with a huge haul on a random day. Yes, the prices are below retail, but they're usually nothing compared to on-line sample sale stores. Also, a lot of times the clothes have either blemishes or rips. I think Free People and Kooba sales were the only good ones that I've been to. Communal fitting room is a trade-off for the bargains, I guess. read more

When I first moved to the NYC area I learned about sample or "irregular" sales. Upon hearing the name, I thought that these were either 1. Sales which included tops with one shirtsleeve significantly longer than the other or 2. Clothing that required a fiber supplement. After frequenting these sales, I realize that "irregular" refers to broken zippers, missing buttons and makeup smudges - pretty regular wear and tear that can be amended with a good tailor, if you have time, patience and money. However, if you want "awesome" sales, the overstock sales are the best. No Metamucil required. read more

Came here for my first real NYC sample sale experience when they had Club Monaco stuff on sale. Overall, decent space, not well organized, but large enough for variety. Inattentive customer service (except if you're trying on a jacket, in which case, they are VERY VERY attentive and will get angry). Awkward and inconvenient hours. When I arrived on Day 1 of the sample sale at around 6:30pm, there was a long line outside, since they limit how many people can come in, but the line moved fairly quickly. There is a good amount of space inside for items, not particularly well organized, but that was probably to be expected. The most annoying part of the experience was that there were no mirrors available. There were signs asking people not to try on things, which they enforced with some guy whose only job it seemed to be to walk around yelling at people who he felt like might be breaking this rule. I get if it's a skirt or a dress that we're talking about, but apparently this also applies to jackets? Really?? I can't try on a jacket and have my friend tell me if it fits right? That just seems silly. This of course meant I didn't buy anything because I wasn't going to spent $179 on a jacket that might not fit. I did go over to the area where they were selling accessories in huge bins. I found a scarf that I really liked and paid for it without any problems. I used Visa to pay, since they don't accept Amex. Then I left and did not check my purchase or try on my scarf again until I got back home. The woman who rang me up left the security device on! The big black security device on a pure white scarf. This was really inconvenient, since those things are impossible to remove, and even worse, this place has incredibly inconsistent and inconvenient hours. They often close at 6-7pm, which makes it impossible to go here if you work. I've had a really hard time coming back to ask for the annoying security tag to be removed. read more

I love bargains. I once declared sale my favorite word in the dictionary. Yes, I am a bargain hunter girl. I will dig through piles and piles of clothes to find that perfect article of clothing at the best possible price. Clothingline is wonderful because it saves me time from digging. The merchandise is well organized by size and stuff was actually hung on hangers! I go here specifically for the Theory sample sales. I have bought tons of pants and dresses here for a fraction of their retail price. The prices are further reduced towards the end of the sales, but you risk the chance of a limited selection. I don't mind checking my bags and coats at the beginning. I have been to other sample sales that make you check even your purse, so you have to lug around your wallet, blackberry, phone, ipod, etc. around with you along with the bag check tag. So, really, this bag check seems a lot more sane than other places. read more

Got threatened here, went to the fitting room on my way out I put everything back on the rack and one skirt hanging on its own as I found it without the hanger, instantly I had a lady yelling at me threatening me to meet me outside (not sure what she wanted to do to me outside) only for not doing the job she was being paid to do. How do you even say that to a customer?? anyway I completely ignore her and keep walking as everybody in the store is looking at her. Whats worst the manager comes up to me and tells me "you HAVE to put everything back on the hanger" What??? I don't have to, I'm the customer not the employee, I'm basically contributing to his salary for a really bad job he is doing like hiring the kind of people who threaten customers. Maybe that's what happens after they close the store, if you happen to be outside and meet the staff who saw you not putting an item on the hanger they might hit you or who knows. read more

I have been to a few Theory sample sales and another with a mixture of designers, and have come home with pretty great things, both wardrobe staples and specialty pieces. They organize the store very nicely by size so you just need to go to your section. I also really like that they have dressing room space, although don't expect any privacy! They offer coat check and have mandatory bag check for large/bulky items, but otherwise you can hang on to your stuff, which was much better than my experience at 260 Sample Sales. I would recommend going on "off hours" and as early on in the sample sale's window if you can to avoid large lines for the dressing rooms. read more

For the J. Crew sales, particularly the winter merchandise sales, there are few places with deals this good. Unfortunately, the majority of the sales here are for women, which the website says, but when there are sales for men, they are generally well stocked. The exception was the theory sale I went to, which sold mostly basic tees, and had mostly imperfections like unrepairable broken zippers or little rips in the fabric. Mens shoe selection for J.Crew was also lacking in my size, but I went on the second to last day of the sale... Best advice is to get there early in the day, and early in the week, and if you find something that does you favors, snag it, because bee-hotches be grabby here. read more

While I'm not a fan of the location, I do like the sample sale designer labels they have here every so often. My favorite so far has been the Theory sample sales although I feel prices have gotten a little higher than it used to be. I used to be able find Theory dresses for under $100 but nowadays, it's at least $150 - $200, which are still pretty steep. There's usually no crazy line, unless it's a really (obnoxiously) popular brand like Tory Burch. Coat and large bag checks are required. Security tends to be pretty tight here but it does keep things orderly. At the Theory SS, you're not allowed to try things on the spot and they will make you go to the makeshift fitting room to try it on. Checkout line is pretty fast as there are 4-5 clerks at the register. read more

Its amazing. The Kenneth Cole sale is the best for price. Theory is really good to but I always wait until the slash prices. The prices usually drop by the 3rd or 4th day of a sale. Tory Burch is amazing and insane. Line at the door, line for the shoes. But I go every time. They allow exchanges, but not returns. So if you buy something you hate, you can still exchange while the sale is going on. Love it. Highly recommended. read more

I come to SSS for sample sales all the time...and they have a great selection. If the sample sale is ultra popular (Tory Burch) the lines can go around the block and you could be waiting for hours....and not get in. It can get really hectic and disorganized....you know women and their shoes. Nevertheless, I've found some great bargains here and am always on the lookout for something new. read more

They sell garbage all year round, time to time you got trapped. I did not realize until I got home that I bought a piece of junk, again - for the pants, there are cuts on the legs, if you do not stretch them, you can not see them. read more
