As a former competitive swimmer and swim coach for adults I should have known to cancel our lessons earlier but I continued to try to stay positive and hopeful. There is a lot of instructor turn over so they never remembered what my daughter's skill level was and asked us every lesson to fill them in. Despite asking weekly if she could move up to the next class level once she got to the required breath holding time we were told she wasn't ready. So for 8 months she was stuck in 1A as a two year old surrounded by infants. Age wise she should have been in 1B. Truly think she should have been in the other class to have older children to emulate and goals that were more age appropriate. We will be finding a new swim school that can actually teach her how to float on her own and help us feel safe with her in the pool.

You never have to guess how your child is doing--the teachers always let you know when they've mastered a new skill or when they're ready to level up. With three kids, finding a place where I can book all of them in lessons at the exact same time is nearly impossible, but Waterloo makes it seamless and convenient. Traumatizing to say the least!…read more Took our 3 year old for her first swimming class and we were so excited. First thing they did was dunk her all the way in the water and she, of course, swallowed a lot of water and cried so hard. It took a while for another adult to come and "comfort her" which they really didn't offer true comfort. She was still crying and within the next two minutes it was her turn again and she screamed "nooo" and was kicking and screaming and the instructor dunked her all the way into the water AGAIN with her mouth wide open. Nothing short of torture! I quickly got up to take her out of the class. As a trauma informed practitioner, I know the importance of respecting people's "no's" and going at the pace of the child's body. My daughter was not ready to do that again and I was told over the phone that if she wasn't ready, they would practice only getting her chin in the water, and then the next round her nose and then her eyes, etc. that was not the case at all. When I took her out, one of the instructors said "she was doing great". I don't know in what world a terrified toddler whose agency just got taken away is considered doing "great" but I have never seen my daughter in more distress in my life. I am so glad I was brave enough to listen to my mom instinct and take her out of the class. I learned how to swim without the torture of drowning. This was not ok. I feel terrible about ever bringing my daughter to experience this. Absolutely terrible. I couldn't sleep last night and every time I replay it in my head, my heart hurts. What I would recommend doing instead is actually building a relationship of trust and respect with each child and going at their pace. I understand it's a short amount of time but the "cry it out" type of system in place is embarrassingly outdated and harmful.

I initially came here because I won a 3 month pass/membership in an auction at her school. This auction winning would entitle her to receive lessons for 3 months (I was also required to pay a sign-up fee aside from the pass I paid for in the auction). When I started scheduling my daughter with the 3 month pass, there were numerous issues with front-desk staff. I was given a plethora of inaccurate information from various staff members on how the 3 month pass/membership would work. Aside from these miscommunications, my daughter recently had an upper respiratory infection (which is highly contagious) and because of this, I canceled her last swim lesson for 08/28/2019 with the intent to reschedule once she was in better health. I was told at that time when I phoned to cancel said lesson by the employee who answered the phone that my daughter would be allowed to make-up the last class on the 3 month membership as it was not a 'no show' lesson. *Most folks know that an upper respiratory infection (especially in young children) can last for weeks and swimming, dental work etc. should be avoided until the infection subsides. Approximately three weeks later (which is almost standard recoup time for an infection such as the one she had), on 09/18/2019, I called and left a voice message to advise that my daughter is now able to swim as she is free from aliments --- in an attempt to schedule her last lesson of the 3 months I paid for. I did not get a call back, accordingly I called back today, 09/19/2019 to schedule her swim lesson and I was advised that because my daughter "is not on active plan", I would have to sign her up again and pay the sign-up fees I initially paid etc. and she would not be permitted to have her last lesson as it was too long ago from her last session. As a consumer, it is my stance that if someone pays for a service they are entitled to it. In this case, I paid for the lessons my daughter was to have but am being denied what I paid for because of an ailment. In addition, to pay a fee I already paid (the sign-up fee), which is to be good for one year again is preposterous. While I had every intent to sign my daughter up for regular lessons at the conclusion of the 3 month sessions, unfortunately I will have to take my business elsewhere. Buyer beware!

The instructors are great, very patient and communicative for my kids and they just have such a wide variety. This is probably the nicest Y in the entire metro area. I also signed up for egym which is really good if I can get there more often and it doesn't get terribly busy in my opinion throughout the day

Disappointed by Pool Deck Conditions and Lack of Response…read more I am a regular swimmer at the CHASCO Family YMCA and frequently use the pool. Unfortunately, the condition of the pool deck has become increasingly concerning, and my previous email regarding this issue received no response or acknowledgment. As the photos show, there is extensive dark buildup and discoloration throughout the deck, including areas immediately surrounding the pool. There is also a strong, unpleasant odor in the pool deck area that smells like sewage/sewer, particularly around the drainage/channel area. Several members were commenting on the smell again this morning, so this is not something only I have noticed. The lifeguards appear to do what they can with routine sweeping and general upkeep, but this has clearly gone beyond what routine cleaning can address. The deck needs a thorough deep cleaning or power washing, and the source of the odor needs to be investigated. This morning, another regular swimmer was actually speaking with the front desk about purchasing a pressure washer himself for the lifeguards to use. That is an incredibly generous gesture, but members should not have to purchase cleaning equipment simply to have a clean and properly maintained swimming environment. I understand that the YMCA is a nonprofit organization and relies heavily on community support. I appreciate its mission and what this facility provides to our community. But paying members should still be able to expect reasonable cleanliness, facility maintenance, and--at the very least--a response when legitimate concerns are brought to management's attention. At this point, I am hoping management will address both the condition of the deck and the persistent odor, rather than allowing members and lifeguards to try to solve a facility-maintenance issue themselves.

My daughter adores her and once she's in the pool (toddlers can be iffy) she has a blast. She comes to our house for lessons currently and we are so excited that she can continue teaching my daughter in an indoor swimming pool over the winter. Highly recommend!

My son and I spend several months out of the year at my parents lake house in Northern Michigan…read more Summer is very busy with dogs, kids, and adults running in and out of the house all day long. With the lake and boat dock just 100 yards out the front door, it can be very challenging with little ones who aren't quite swimmers yet, but want so badly to be out with the bigger kids playing. You just can't predict when they will try and sneak out and play while you aren't paying attention. For this reason, this will be our third year taking lessons with Vicki. I wanted our son to be able to SAVE HIMSELF if god forbid something happened, he got out, and fell off the dock, or whatever. I know firsthand that being a good swimmer has nothing to do with saving yourself, especially when you are panicking. In addition to all of the water rules my parents have had in place for the last 40 years, which everyone, kids and adults included, are required to follow, these lessons are just one more tool in our safety kit. My mother is always super impressed with his water skills at such a young age. Vicki is great, and makes sure the parent knows what is happening. However, it is uncomfortable for some kids, and can be uncomfortable to watch at times. The kids are getting their face and head wet, they are learning to flip over and float on their backs, learning to be calm and breathe while floating on their back. Lessons are work, it is not a bunch of splashing around and fun. They are learning a new skill, which can be frustrating and uncomfortable. From my experience, many of the kids really blossom and start to love lessons towards the end, and some, like my son, tolerate it but don't love it. Which is fine, it isn't about him loving it, it's about him instinctually knowing what to do if he falls in the lake while we aren't around. I'm hoping since he is three this year, he will enjoy lessons more, but even if he doesn't, oh well. For my family, these lessons are the equivalent of wearing helmets and pads while playing sports, or sitting in your car seat in the car. Safety comes first, then the fun. We can't recommend Vicki enough, she has squeezed us in for extra lessons when needed, and worked with us by testing him not only in his clothes when he falls in the water, but also helping us select and test life jackets, so we were able to select the one which allowed our son to utilize his self rescue skills. Since we are on a lake, making sure we had selected the most appropriate life jacket was critical. Sign your kids up, you won't be sorry!

We had private sessions the summer before we came back and tested. Our son got into silver right away. He has been on the level for 2 years now so I'm hoping he will advance sometime. His coach quit earlier this year so we are re-establishing with the new coach. There aren't very many competitive swim schools in austin and we like the convenience of Nitro CP. our coaches for intro are really good too.

We explained the concerns and the reasons for frustration. He offered a free assessment session the next week. The assessment session was very thorough. The coach, Michael, was very personable and informative. Robert tapped to Michael afterwards and placed my daughter in properly assessed level. He talked again at length to explain how the school works, who to talk to for information and how to approach him for any concerns. I'm very impressed for the level of care and customer oriented approach. I feel strongly about their commitment to focus on children learning and getting them ready for the swimming skills as fast as possible. I highly recommend this school. I'd recommend to any new parent to approach Robert for any issues. He's very genuine and friendly person.

They provided a free bloom drink and water for my first class. The sweat foundations class was HARD (in a great way!)...their classes are 30 min, but they are designed to be so efficient and high intensity that you burn a ton of calories and get a great sweat in. This is a full body workout - combo of cardio and working out various muscle groups. SWEAT class is on a versaclimber, while SCULPT class is a modern Pilates reformer. Great music, ambiance, and studio. They ended with a refreshing cold towel & a very thoughtful personalized note from the S2 team. Looking forward to coming back!
