Not the cheapest place in the world but it's well-organized, the folks behind the counter are attentive, and they have, by far, the most complete selection of colored caulking I've ever seen outside of San Rafael. There's frequently a lot of annoying lookie-loos loitering around on their phones inside--presumably waiting on a life-changing text from their AI Feng Shui consultants. You have to physically push them aside because they are totally oblivious to the existence of other people and will never respond to a simple "excuse me." Obviously not the store's fault that Burlingame is lousy with entitled Karls and Karens. read more

Awesome place with tons and tons of paints of all types, so so so many colors, it can be overwhelming, especially if, like me and my husband, you're not DIY people. We lucked out and got a wonderful woman to help us--Patricia, was forthcoming and went waaaay out of her way to help us, She offered to give us tips and guide us, explaining the difference between applications, and mixed up a small sample, plus painted it on a wooden strip, so we could see how the color absorbed and likely with two coats, what we'd be left with. The store is neat and clean, well laid out and organized. They have an upstairs, but not sure what's there. Highly recommend, and parking is readily available up front. The people here, especially Jeff, are so nice and helpful. I've never done custom cabinets and shelves. They stained different stains on samples of wood that was in my project. Then stained again because I wanted darker. In the end, I went with no stain. Felt bad do dropped off some Starbucks cards for troubling them. This store is clean and well maintained. The salesperson who tended to me though was gruff and unhelpful. Basically, I was sold 4 gallons of paint when one gallon would have been enough. The unopened cans of paint are not returnable. I reached out to Mr. Gray who said he couldn't help me. Well, if I'd been properly helped when I visited the store, I wouldn't have wasted hundreds of dollars in paint that I'll never use. Thanks for your response. Received excellent service from Gray's paint staff. Once to help pick out a gold leaf paint for a large metal fence paint job. Second for helping sample grey stains to match my grey laminate flooring at my own house. This review is long overdue. After not getting the right color and effect of wood siding from our contractor, we came in to get advice directly before we repainted. I didn't catch the salesperson who helped us (tried to find it on invoice to give a shout out) but he was patient and knowledgeable in making sure we knew our options. He didn't rush us in making a sale and took the time to paint our samples to help us make our decision. (Had I known, I wouldn't have allowed the contractor to buy the cans of color to test that cost me almost $200). Thank you so much! read more

I went in for a color match on Tuesday afternoon to get a color match & I was told by a short white gentleman (with glasses) that it would be ready by Wednesday morning. I show up the next day to pick it up around noon & to my surprise I was told it was not ready. I asked why it was ready and the same gentleman I had interacted with the previous day said to me "if you don't like how my business works go Kelly more or ace hardware" so I grabbed my color match and left. Gray's Paint has the best paint - but the service at the Burlingame store leaves much to be desired. When you call, you will be answered by the most unprofessional, unhelpful person. If you want to have an old can of paint formula made up, you have to take the can into the store. You cannot take a picture of it and send it to them by any electronic means. The last time a few years ago when I was there to replace a paint they mixed WRONG COLOR for me, the owner ( 20-ish owner's nephew? ) didn't even apologize for their mistake. Overall, the customer service was always lukewarm or didn't care if you buy or not, not like the old store on Lorton in Burlingame ,the guys were always very friendly and helpful. These days I rather go to Kelly Moore, they have much better service. read more

I want to like this place.. I really do. After 3 years of giving them thousands of dollars (we repainted our entire inside and outside house), we continue to be treated poorly. The owner of the store utterly hates his job and it shows. He needs to be in a non- customer facing role. Every time we come in, he is quite condescending. Each time we would ask any small advice, it was met with this sort of glare, and some sort of rude comment. He never ceases to not make me uncomfortable. I walk away from the store each time feeling about a foot tall. Why would you be mean to your customers, and in particular regular customers?? We recently decided after years of this we are done. I've given him no less than 30 chances to be cordial. It's just not going to happen. Go elsewhere, unless you want your day ruined. read more

Jeff Gray volunteered to stain for free 3 cedar wood swatches for me, and did three coats each, so the finish was identical to what I got. Three months later, I needed to test stains for my front door, and again, got great customer service from Mark Rutherford. Not the cheapest place for paint, but great customer service. Condo associations are all terrible. They are one of my worst nightmares (yes, even worse than Fed Ex-Kinkos), and attempting to deal with them is pretty much pointless. Need approval for a hardwood install? Why even bother, they wont ever get back with you. How about painting and repairing a damaged front door? After eight months, I finally got fed up and took matters into my own hands. It's been years since I have used Gray's, but they still had the color code for my door. Within 10 minutes I was back painting the damaged areas on my door and it's now looking pristine. Yes, I am a rule breaker and technically the association can write my butt up. I'm giving this store 5 stars because of a wonderful color consultant service they have to help customers choose paint colors. Teri (who is there Mon-Weds) was super helpful and spot on with her recommendations for our kitchen and bathroom remodel. We were looking to paint our cabinets/walls and modernize our home. We love the new look and no way we would have been able to choose the right colors without her help. (Note: there is another consultant there on Thursday, Diane, I did not feel she was helpful so I cannot recommend). read more

I was very surprised to find that I would be disappointed by Grays. But I was. They mixed the wrong color. It was close enough to the color I had ordered but very off once it dried. This caused me a lot of re-work, frustration and project delay. They replaced the paint which was nice. But, they we'ren't really apologetic about the incident. Not even a sorry. Just said, the machine went down last week. So why the heck wasn't there any Quality Control on the manually mixed paint. read more

I bought a color that ended up being too light given the lighting in the room. I took my second can of Natura paint up to Gray's and they added pigment to darken the paint to the next Benjamin Moore shade I was interested in. The room now looks great and I didn't have to waste an entire can of paint. They didn't even charge me to add dye and re-mix my existing can of paint. Great customer service. read more

Guys behind the counter have horrible customer service skills. I went in, spent some time with a very nice lady who helped me pick out colors for a project. I went to buy some samples only to find that several were completely dry and unusable. She told me that they were replacing and restocking all the old samples... new vendor or something and the guys at the counter needed to make up new samples for me. Rather than make up the samples that I wanted to buy (which they needed to make regardless of my purchase) they guy behind the counter told me that I'd need to buy a quart of each one if I wanted a sample. Uhmmm.... How about no? There were 3 or 4 guys there, only 1 person appeared to actually be working. One of the other guys could have easily made up the samples but they chose to stand around and BS. It took a few moments to even get their attention as they had their backs to the counter. The woman that helped me seemed surprised and frustrated at their lack of service. I took the color advice she gave me and went elsewhere for my paint. The kid at Lowe's was far more friendly and helpful than any of the guys working at Gray's. When he couldn't mix the color I wanted with the paint I wanted in just a quart, (wrong base or something) he immediately offered me 1/2 off the gallon price. Even after I said ok, he still made an effort to locate the correct base for me and found another that worked in the quart size. When I paint my house this summer, I'll be getting my supplies elsewhere. read more

You need high quality paint? Go to Gray's! I've had the unfortunate pleasure of painting three buildings in the the past three years. The first one I bought "standard issue" paint from Orchard Supply and Home Depot. Big mistake. I ended up re-painting half the house because of poor coverage. Cheap paint = poor paint life and poor coverage. I now buy my paint (Benjamin Moore) from Gray's. Just painted a house this memorial weekend. Bought the exterior latex Benjamin Moore in satin finish. Beautiful! I'm not sure what that other yelper (who is now filtered) is talking about. These guys have always been outstanding at Gray's. Sure, they may be a tough bunch of guys, but I'd rather buy from a bunch of guys that know paint and how to apply it, than a few softies who don't know a dam thing about paint over at Home Depot. - They have always answered my questions - both in person and on the phone. - They always have my paint ready long before I show up!! I've never waited to be helped like I always have to at Kelly Moore. - The paint quality is unreal. It covers up the old paint and looks beautiful. - They have all the supplies you'll ever need. - They carried all my paint to my car for me without even asking (my foot was broken). - They have an amazing showroom now. The old store...not so nice...this new store is beautiful. Again, I'm just a weekend warrior painter but I recognize great customer service and high quality products. Gray's has them both. read more
