Walked in to get keys made, and pick up a few items for the house. Three workers were standing, and laughing with each other, at the register in the center of the store. I walked to the key counter, and stood behind a man that had been waiting for someone to help him. I asked him how long he'd been waiting, and he said it had been ~5 min since he asked for help. I walked back to the center cashier, who said there was now no one on the floor to help as everyone was on lunch break. I asked for the manager, and he said he was on a break. There were now three people waiting to get keys copied, and no staff to help. After waiting a few more minutes, I walked back to the center of the store and spoke loud enough so that the manager could hear in the back. The message? That customers needed help at the key counter. Finally, a staff person came to the counter, clearly annoyed, and said they were having problems with their staff-to-staff communication device. Unlikely. What they were having a problem with, was a clear misunderstanding of what customer service means. Talk about a failure to train employees. Never coming back, nor recommending this business to my friends or family. There are better businesses nearby, ones that actually understand the importance of customer service ... and they're just a short drive away. read more

I discovered this place when I came in for some Benjamin Moore paint. In the best possible way, I felt like I stepped back to the '80s as soon as I entered the store! They have a great selection of just about everything you need for your hom, at reasonable prices and the workers are friendly. I've been here multiple times and the level of customer service here is insane from their youngest representative to their most experienced one. And yes that applies to whether you need something or you don't. You'll be surprised how much inventory they have as well. Amazing deals every now and then "get the membership". I must say this is the worst hardware store that I have ever had the displeasure of being in. Aside from their spotty inventory, the staff is rude & totally unprofessional. Their supposed Store Mgr Alessandro & his other employee Ernesto, do nothing more than give you the run around & a hard time, sorry moly because they don't have a clue as to how to assist your properly. The previous owners were kind & accommodating and went the extra mile to see that you were taken care of, because they really cared. This new owner Eric Hasset is always "out of town" and can NEVER be reached or will return a phone call. Very sad. What a very interesting shop! They sell all the things one might need from lightbulbs to smoke detectors to hoses. Pulsating sprinklers to bird seed to perlite. Plus they have free popcorn! They have good service also with the greeter waiting at the front door to ask you what you might need and to send you to the right file so you don't have to spend time getting lost. Prices are a little bit higher than Home Depot but having everything that person might need in stock is just great read more

My husband Jeff who is a contractor in San Mateo for the last 30 years and I frequent that store pretty regularly we have spent a lot of money in there however, this time we dealt with a very unpleasant short, boyish figure pretty young woman with a dark hair she proceeded to give dirty looks and roll her eyes as we paid for our purchases and exited The store in general is a wonderful little gem but please ensure that you train your staff to treat people better. Came here today to grab a few items as I had a couple of Ace rewards to burn through. Located on 1st street past the train tracks (basically the busy and well traversed part of DT San Mateo), this Ace location is rather inconspicuously located on the corner of 1st and Delaware next to a bunch of offices. They have their own small parking lot, however free street parking is also available on this side of the train tracks. Shop itself is fairly small, but has a small assortment of every department you would typically expect from a hardware store (paint, vehicle, gardening, tools, etc...). Service is pretty friendly, and associates made it a point to constantly ask me if I needed help every time they passed by. I like the fact that Hassett Ace's are all family owned because it's always great to support a local business. I don't live in this part of San Mateo, but definitely wouldn't mind stopping by if I'm in the area! read more

The honey needed a nut for his scootie, and because I did not want him to eat it on the road on the way home we stopped in here to pick one up. We did go through a few people until we found one who could help us and knew what we were looking for. The selection is great and the location is amazing (right next to Caltrain). They do not have a big lumberyard, if you're nailing up and sheathing 2x4s this may not be your place. They are more limited on construction finishing supplies than the big boxes, buckets of sheetrock compound and a yard full of pavers not really. But they are SO good at damn near everything else, they have everything smaller than a breadbox (and many things larger) shelved floor to ceiling in their modest space, and attentive staff who knows where everything is. You won't wander for twenty minutes looking for someone to cut you a piece of wire. They are twice as far from me as the Orange Depot but I'll drive it if I'm not buying lumber, because I'll spend half as long parking and half as long getting help for what I need. read more

Every single time we drive by this place my would yell out "this is the nicest hardwarestore ever!!!!" For two years I heard these words. So finally came the day that I was in need of performing some surgery on my car. Adhesive Velcro and Sticky Magnets were required to fix my car. Don't ask. I stopped in and as soon as I walked in the door I was greeted and asked if I needed any help. I was immediately walked over to the magnet section (I'm still amazed they had a display dedicated to magnets) and finally to the Velcro stand. The cashier was friendly and thanked me for coming in. And even though I spent a total of six dollars and 18 cents, I was made to feel like a real big spender. This is the nicest hardware store ever!! read more

LANDMARK FOR SAN MATEO I don't know how long Wisnom's have been at this very same location but probably for a very long time. They have been bought out by ACE Hardware but really glad to know they kept their name for all of us who grew up coming here. Wisnom is like a smaller version of Orchard Hardware with dedicated employees who are passionate at helping us DYI get things done the most effective way with the right tools! They sell pretty much everything you can think off from nuts and bolts to electrical circuits to plants to gardening and to scented candles. It is truly one of the last honest one stop shopping out there where the staff are specialists at their own trade and craft! I love coming to Wisnom to find just that little something especially when I have that hard to find gadget that I am looking for to complete my project! read more

I had a great experience at this location. Firstly, they have a small parking lot but there's plenty of street parking. The store itself is large and well stocked. Even though there were lots of people shopping here an employee asked me right away if I needed help finding anything and listened to what I was looking for. He helped me look at my options and pointed out any accessories I may need to go with my purchases. The line at checkout moved quickly because they had 3 cashiers. It seems like they pay attention to where employees are needed and move them around when called for. It's nice to see proactive employees making a store run smoothly, it tells me they care about the customer experience! The products I got were fairly priced and I had many options to pick from.
