The Graziano Bros. Sausage Mobile food trailer pulled up to where I work at the Crescent building in Urbandale. If you are familiar with the Des Moines metro the Graziano Bros name should be one you already know. Established in 1912 they are a fixture here when it comes to Italian sausage. The ordering process was smooth and the menu was displayed well. The wait wasn't long. I ordered the fried ravioli (beef filled) with marinara and an Italian Chop sandwich. The Italian Chop is almost exactly what it sounds like. It's served cold. Chopped mortadella, pepperoni, capicola, salami, provolone, tomato, onion, pepper rings, and lettuce. Tossed in a creamy Italian dressing. Served on a hoagie roll. The ravoli was served terrifyingly hot. Lol It's a bold tangy marinara. The sandwich is perfect for what it is. Service was excellent for a truck and typical of when there's a line. Busy. Not much time to small talk. Yum! So excited in exploring the downtown Des Moines area to find a section referred to as little Italy. Within the little Italy area is an Italian grocery that has been here for well over 100 years. Graziano Bros offers, sausages, cheeses, breads, meatballs, etc. plus dry goods offered in wholesale amounts for additional savings. A wonderful little shop with a feeling of nostalgia and a focus on excellent customer service. It has a wonderful aroma of amazing food selections. My mom is visiting from out of town. She loves charcuterie so we stopped in for some cheese and meat. She left with it bag of other little things off the shelf- lemon tarts and fresh bread and biscotti and sparkling water and bottled tea and marinated mushrooms and olives and cherry BBQ chips ... Its a little expensive but the staff are friendly and the store is clean and cozy. The deli worker gave my 1 year old a slice of spicy pepperoni after she cried when a man in front of us sampled it. read more

We went to Grazianos to get their famous sausage and some ingredients for a lasagna. We had been talking about getting their sandwhiches for a long time. We decided to shop and get sandwhich. The only bummer is we were hoping to eat our sandwhiches there. Unfortunately they didn't have a seating area. We still ordered and took our sandwhiches to go. The grocery area had many items. They had everything we needed for the lasagna. There were so many items I want to try. My dinning companion had the grinder. He did enjoy it. Usually he makes the "better pick" when we go out. That day I won! I had the Muffaletta. OMG!!! AMAZING! we both couldn't stop talking about this sandwhich. It was on a focaccia bread. It was so fresh. There was a lot of meat on this sandwhich. The olive spread added a nice salty taste to the sandwhich. This sandwhich was so big I literally could not get my mouth around it. I had to tear part of the bread off. I'm on a business trip and got one day leisure time in town. Booked marked the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates and the Graziano Bros, and both are absolutely wonderful. I got the Sophie's veggie daily special panini with focaccia, porchetta, prosciutto, garlic cheddar, fresh mozzarella, spinach, roasted red and yellow pepper, artichoke, and special dressing...the portion is big and the flavors are heavenly. Omg everything went amazing! My online order was ready early! The only thing I could see improvement on is where to go to pick up your online order. I waited in the checkout lane to find out where to pick my order up. All their items such a premade manicotti and pasta sauce are just out of this world! Small business sausage making is almost extinct. Growing up, there were many in Chicago. They no longer exist. Good bread is getting difficult to find as well. They recently had an excellent bakery/supplier close their doors. I appreciate Graziano's for keeping the tradition alive. They also have many imported items that brought me back to my childhood. Let's talk sandos... We're taking 4 cold sandwiches home for family dinner tonight, made with care, all double wrapped and labeled. Smell in the car is divine. We picked up a couple of hot sandwiches too, for lunch, stopped at a rest stop for a picnic and our bellies are happy! I picked up a few things for the next couple of days off and realized ... I haven't written a review of Graziano Bros yet. How do you review perfection? I first encountered Graziano Bros when I was working at the late and much lamented Clothes Line pizza place sometime back in the last century. They used Graziano Bros sausage and I got to go the the store a couple of times with my boss. It started a rest-of-my-life love affair with their sausage. Now that is not to say that the rest of their store isn't as good, but you start with the sausage. The meat counter in the back of the store is one of the best places in Des Moines. And then, you start exploring the rest of what they dish out there, you really get the full view. I got a lovely provolone and a marvelous salami for snacks and sandwiches. I got some sweet sausage for breakfast, and medium sausage for dinner later this week. I got an amazing loaf of bread. The thing is, you can get provolone and salami and sausage and bread at any grocery store in town. But they aren't this good. Sure, they're good, but they aren't Grazianos good. There is a reason why this tiny store has survived, and thrived, for more than 100 years now. They are the best that Des Moines has to offer as a grocery store. read more

I've lived in Des Moines for 3 years now and I just recently found Graziano Bros. Oh, how I have been missing out. They have all the things I need for Italian cooking. Fantastic pastas, semolina flour, 00 flour, INCREDIBLE MEATBALLS (guys, try the meatballs. They even have them frozen so you just throw them in the freezer and pop them in the skillet to toast them up. No one knows you didn't make them. I won't tell, you won't tell. No one has to know.) They even have speciality ingredients that your grandmothers weird recipes call for. The staff at Graziano's is so warm and helpful. One day, I needed ground lamb and they didn't have it in the case, because usually they just use it as an ingredient in their sausage, so they just asked if I had to do any other shopping in the store and had me wait a few minutes and popped back and ground some fresh for me. They are so kind and will help you find the products you need. Des Moines is so lucky to have a spot like Graziano's in town. And seriously people, the mini frozen meatballs, throw those in some Italian wedding soup, it'll change your life. Wowza. read more

I love this little Italian grocery. They have a deli in the back of the store that seems to stay busy. Sandwiches are delicious. There is a cold case with truffle butter and misc dairy. A freezer with deserts, pans of lasagna and many other things. They have little bags (I think of as bulk) of seasonings. And finally on the shelves are some standards such as bread, pasta and sauce. What a neat little store! If you go to most Italian restaurants in the DSM metro, you'll see Graziano Bros sausage on the menu and for good reason. My daughter's preschool was having a spaghetti dinner fundraiser and I had the task of picking up the meatballs. The store isn't large but it has everything you need for a great Italian meal. Since I was only there to pick up and pay for the meatballs, I only perused the store when first entering. Then I went to the meat counter to request my meatball pickup. A nice man went and got the meatballs. While I waited, a lady and I talked as she weighed out and packaged product. Such nice people! They even delivered the four boxes of meatballs to my vehicle. My mom used to bring me here as a kid, and just the smell of the place made my mouth water, and that was 40 + years ago and the same mouth watering smells are still the same. And now I can order Italian Sammy's to go!! We went today and I had to grab a grinder , the first one I've had , and it was the best grinder I've ever had hands down. I've always loved the Jenny's grinders at the fair, this blows it out of the water!! We go every few months to restock our spices, but now I'm getting a sandwich ( sangwich) also. First impressions: the interior wasn't as dazzling as I expected but then again I could compare Graziano's to the like of any given warehouse-esque Italian food shop in the Strip District of Pittsburgh. No frills, pick up some of nonna's favorite ingredients and get the hell out. This specialty store is located in what's left of Little Italy in Des Moines. The Italian sausage is king here. We bought some with frozen meatballs . We had a feast with them. You know what? It's good sausage but it's not really Italian sausage, it's much more like linguica. Italian sausage, at least around Chicago, has fennel as its primary flavor. Graziano's has paprika as its primary flavor element. It doesn't make it bad, it just makes it different than what I had expected. We were visiting DM and heard about Graziano's from several people, so we bought some sausage to take home with us. So far we've had the sweet Italian sausage (okay at best), the andouille (very good) and the medium hot Italian sausage. The best item we bought at the store was a loaf of focaccia, still warm from South Union bakery. The lady behind the meat counter was a Graziano and we had a nice conversation about how their family migrated to DM. read more
