As a designer, I hired Lisa for a slipcover project for one of my clients, trusting her business…read moretagline, "Slipcovers and More." One of the first red flags was that Lisa does not operate under a written contract. Without a contract outlining scope, expectations, or process, important details were not clarified -- including that the original slipcovers would not be returned once deconstructed. That lack of documentation created confusion and avoidable issues later in the project. The project ultimately spanned more than six months for what should have been a straightforward slipcover job. During that time, requirements changed (she initially stated she would not need the chairs, then later required them), and portions of the work were completed by a "stitcher." The slipcovers that were delivered were inconsistent in sizing, puckered, misaligned, and only one fit properly. We returned them for correction. The final attempt removed the originally promised zipper construction and replaced it with a folded pocket bottom. The slipcovers were returned with oil stains and continued construction issues. When concerns were raised, the explanation given was that the fabric was stiff and difficult to work with. However, the issues were not related to fabric drape -- they were workmanship problems. Even after multiple rounds of revisions, Lisa maintained that she delivered the product as discussed. At the end of this process, the slipcovers were unusable, despite being fully paid for. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this workroom for slipcover construction. Clear contracts, consistent workmanship, and accountability are essential in this industry.

I consigned three pieces and after not hearing whether or not they sold, contacted the store. I was told they did sell (two anyway, the third they couldn't give me an explanation what happened to it), and that a check was sent to my house. Either that was a lie (most probable) or it was lost in the mail. Either way, I never received a check. The store said they'd send another check less $35 for a stop payment on the first. Then they changed their mind and decided not to reissue a check for any amount. The figure is too small to pursue legal recourse and not worth wasting my time. But it's not so unimportant as to not raise a red flag to others.

In addition to interesting items from the 19th century there is a vast array of mid-century modern furniture and accessories. You don't have to have a house or office entirely devoted to Mad Men sensibilities to appreciate this modernist aesthetic. The space is such that things have enough room to be clearly seen and admired. This is not like some antique stores which can be dark, and overly filled with items placed too closely together to get a proper perspective. The furniture, lamps, glassware, dishes, and art work are all spread out in a double-wide space with plenty of room and high ceilings making it easy to walk around and admire everything while imagining this or that in your own home. Peter, the owner, and his adorable assistant, the perky dachsund, make browsing a pleasure. Questions are cheerfully answered and conversation about art, decor and furniture flows. Right now I have my eye on a beautiful drafting table that can change positions allowing it be used as a desk. I just fell in love with it this weekend and will have to go back tomorrow for another look. Some of the prices are more on the high side than I think they need to be but I get the sense that the owner is ready to do business with the serious shopper. This store is lovely, the owner charming and many of the pieces are fabulous. I'm glad this place has been able to expand while still remaining conveniently in my neck of the woods.
