Very unsatisfied and unprofessional experience. Mike the owner had what he called a foreman come out to provide what I understood to be a quote. Instead, I was charged $450 for what he later called an "emergency repair," despite the work taking approximately 15 minutes. When I requested an itemized bill with material and labor costs, he refused to provide one. He then threatened to place a lien on my home, even though I never signed a contract or authorized emergency work. Communication was poor, questions were not answered in a timely manner, and the situation felt retaliatory after I chose to move forward with a more reputable company. This behavior was unprofessional and unacceptable. I will be reporting this conduct. Save your time and money and hire a professional who is honest, transparent, and respectful. read more

I had a small roofing job in San Pedro and wanted someone local to do the work. The motor for the exhaust fan on the roof of our garage burned out with age. I called Mike Collins at Great American and without hesitation he said that they could do that. He came out, took a look, told me right away how they were going to do it and about how much it would cost. Shortly after, he and a couple of his crew came to get started, he lined them out on the job and then went himself to get a replacement fan unit. In a couple of hours it was all done. Fan installed and the base properly tarred onto the roof, waste and old fan collected, and debris swept up from inside the garage. The men were competent and professional, very polite. Earlier today, I was flying my drone in my alleyway. As a new owner of this drone, I was practicing my piloting skills at low altitudes, perfecting my maneuvering skills. After 5 minutes of flawless flight time, I decided to not only fly at higher altitudes, but put my drone into high speed racing mode. Nothing could possibly go wrong... With the drone wizzing high above, showing me a beautiful picturesque San Pedro view on the app, the wind picked up and I started to lose control. I recently moved to a new home in Palos Verdes that was built in 1961. Our purchase inspection revealed a few broken tiles. But what is worse is that while in the course of fixing up the home, we realized that the 4 bathroom vents vented nowhere. They just vented the smelly moist air into the attic! Our electricians would not penetrate the roof since it was ceramic so I needed a roofer to create 4 vent holes with flashing and ductwork so that the fans would vent out of the house. Mike Collins came within 20 minutes of my call and gave me a quick estimate. He was honest to a fault, gave me my options, and gave me a quote. He had his guys over in 2 days to start and they finished everything in 2 days. Vent holes, broken tile replacements. He even credited me $300 because his guys made a small error of using 4" ducting instead of 6" ducting. Which they corrected right away. This is how a company should be run - honesty first. I am just not sure what happened here. I called, the guy came to my house a couple of days later and gave me a bid. There was no haggling, and an agreement was made to return the following week. 2 weeks later, I called back, just asking for an update...no answer. Same drill for 2 more weeks, called, left message, no return call. I'm OK if they just tell me the jobs too small, they're too busy, or he just did not like me. But shouldn't I get the courtesy of an answer? It's just rude and unprofessional, and I don't understand, after all the great reviews, why me? I was nice, I didn't try to beat him over the price. I had an excellent experience with Mike Collins and his team at Great American Roofing. Some tiles on my garage were ripped up during a recent storm and I only had less than a week to get it fixed before the next storm was gonna hit. I reached out through Nextdoor and several people recommended Mike. I call him and 2 other companies on a Thurs. Mike was at my house the same day to look at the roof. He sent me pictures the same day and I had the quote that weekend and he began work, on time, that Monday. The job was finished Tuesday afternoon, the storm hit Thursday and then another storm a week later and I have had no leaks what so ever. The 2nd company I called never returned my call. And the 3rd company called me on Monday and said they could come out to give me a quote on Thursday (the day the 2nd storm was expected). Mike answered all my calls promptly and in the detail that I requested. He even provided me with a letter for the insurance company that was exactly what they needed. ("Wind damage" was covered!) When I called Mike to request the quote I told him we might need a whole new roof (many companies would just agree and give me a quote for a whole new roof). Mike said we did not need a whole roof - just the garage. How refreshing it is to deal with an honest person who does not try to sell you something you do not need! I called GAR Co to get second quote after another roofing Co said I had a spot developing up there that needed repairing. That first quote was to the tune of $550. Well, thank goodness I was lucky enough to find Mike, he came around and had a look and said there was no way there was a big repair needed, in fact, he was so incensed that someone could mislead me like that he sent one of his guys over the next day to repair the spot at NO CHARGE! He said tho' my roof may need some work down the road, for now it was in pretty good shape and I was a long way from getting any leaks. He advised I cut back the trees to keep the raccoons from getting up there and clawing at the shingles. He also advised I get the pile of leaves off the roof too, to stop any water pooling up there, which I did right away before the rain came. Boy, was I grateful for Mike! So, my next review will be to expose the rip off artist who wanted my $550 for repairing a small area that GAR did gratis and in a jiffy. (Stay away from John Day General Contractor and don't let his charm fool you!) From this experience, I will highly recommend GAR and Mike for his complete honesty. It's refreshing to know there are some good guys out there in this dog eat dog world. I could have paid heavily for not getting a second opinion. His help was invaluable. He's at the top of my list! I called GAR to get a third estimate because money as well as quality was a factor. Not only was the estimate less but the quality of work was superior. Mike took the time to meet with me and go over the estimate to make sure I understood what I was getting. He took the time to make sure my garage didn't get messed up because he was doing the roof above my garage and if he didn't put plastic down to protect all my stuff it would have been a big clean up project for me.
