They have meticulously brought this lighthose back to life from the outside in and offer public and private tours, overnight stays, and private events. We were fortunate to have snagged a tour through the Norwalk Seaport Association, owners and keepers of the Sheffiield Island Lighthouse. We spent 2 hours touring the lighthouse and it was impressive to see and learn all about the ligjthouse history and the massive renovations. That seems pretty unfair, its not like they can relocate the lighthouse to make it accessible by anything other than a boat (its still a working lighthouse for crying-out-loud!) or change the policies of the neighborhoods on shore. However, you absolutely can see the lighthouse from shore, including a great, unobstructed view on the local public beach which anyone can visit. If the outside is any indication, I bet the inside is even better! This is the BEST lighthouse in new england, hands down!!!!

We were here for the Van Cortlandt family history tour with Historian Nick Dembrowski, who was well versed and a very informative host. The Van Cortlandt family settled in New York from Holland in the late 1690s on several thousand acres of farmland with slaves prominently from the Caribbean islands, specifically colonial Jamaica, where the merchant family of Frederick Van Cortlandt imported many goods, such as Rum, Sugar, Allspice, Pimentos, Indigo, Coffee and Chocolate. On their farm they raised cattle, sheep, goats, chicken, pigs, and grew crops of wheat, corn, rye and buckwheat. It is a fascinating story of a wealthy family. Of course George Washington slept here during the Revolutionary War of 1776. Take the tour and enjoy seeing the rooms of the well preserved three story house. Every time I take a further walk I learn so much more. This English Georgian Style home is the oldest house in the Bronx. This house was once a plantation built and flourished by African Americans that were enslaved here. The Van Courtlandt family had 5 generations living here in this house till the late 1880's. The family over the years acquired properties from surrounding farms to add to the size of their property. During the Revolutionary War both American and British troops occupied the home. It was past down through generations of the Van Courtlandt family all through the 18th century then it was sold to the New York City for Public Parkland.

This is a great place to go jogging, walking or bike riding which I often see people do. I love walking my dog on this route when I want to take her on longer walks..she gets to enjoy the long walk and I get to transport myself mentally outside of the Bronx with the view of the water, the trees etc. If you're going to walk your dogs be cautious, I don't allow her to go to the grass area because there is glass All over! Near the fence and especially on the grass side. The reason is because the evil people like to break car windows at night in this area. The reservoir is notorious for that and tire robberies. There's never glass on the actual path you would normally walk on. It's never crowded, even during the summer. There's probably 1 or 2 groups of people who will pullout chairs and listen to music coming out of their cars but it never gets crowded like the park across the street does. Clean up of the area tends to be good, there will be garbage across the fence area which is clear has just been blown away from the garbage can nearby. It usually gets cleared by the next day.

A very benevolent…read moreghost Penfield Reef is a nasty place. The long, curving and extremely treacherous reef has claimed many a ship over the years and decades. Even today with the lighthouse and modern navigational aids several boats every summer manage to find the reef. The reef was well known and feared by mariners but it wasn't until 1874 that the present lighthouse was finally constructed. It is made of granite and wood and is one of the very last "unique' lights. Most of the ones built after it are the cheap, efficient, spark plug cast iron ones. Since the reef has claimed so many victims over the years it's a pretty spooky place. The reef has very sharp rocks that are just under the surface at low tide and even in a small craft like a kayak one has to be very aware of what is lurking just under the water. The area got even spookier in 1916 when the lighthouse keeper, Fred Jordan, decided to row ashore and see his family for Xmas. Well the area can get really feisty, really quickly and poor Fred got blown out to sea, never to be seen again. Even since that time people have claimed to have seen Fred. Sometimes rowing around the reef near the light and sometimes at the lighthouse itself but always looking seriously spooky. Fred never seems to bother anyone and it fact in 1942 he is even credited with saving some young boys that got lost out by the light in a small boat. They said a strange man in a small dory guided them to shore. They said the man that saved them didn't say anything and wouldn't come ashore even though the weather was getting really bad. The boys recognized that their savior was good old Fred from an old picture that was shown to them. Whether or not you believe the stories of Fred is up to you. This unique lighthouse that stands about a mile off shore, on the end of a very nasty reef is still a very spooky and cool place. If you go out there you better keep track of what is lurking just under the water and make sure you wave if you happen to see a guy in a small boat. A very spooky looking fellow named Fred.

Yup, its a little red lighthouse uptown under the George Washington Bridge. I've done some training…read moreruns from the upper east side to this spot and its a destination point for many runners getting their training in. Its official name is the Jeffrey's Hook Lighthouse and there are some information plaques nearby where you can read abouts its history. Its also a literary landmark made famous by the children's book "The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge". Also some nice parkland around it to picnic and take in the views.

First, my friend and I walked Main Street and then traveled to the waterfront to enjoy the beautiful perspectives of the Palisades, Tappan Zee bridge and the sailboats sailing along the Hudson. There were plenty of people enjoying picnics and kids biking their hearts out. It also includes a sailing-themed children's playground, outdoor exercise equipment for adults, a fishing pier, and a boat dock. There is a tiny beach you can enjoy. There is also a stage that the park holds live concerts at. There are restaurants that dot the waterfront to dine Al fresco. We chose Hudson Social located inside the historic Dobbs Ferry train station house in New York. There is also Moon Bay that sits directly on waterfront. The best thing for me is to really enjoy the views of the Hudson River, sitting along the rocks and enjoying the breeze.. and that's it. It is not a long ride to get here: 45 minutes from Grand Central to Dobbs Ferry. Highly recommend! I found another treasure to visit in the Hudson Valley.

Nyc's oldest bridge is worth a visit at least once by every Nyc resident. It's historic, quiet,…read morewith views of the water & most of the time no crowd. I always see it when driving around the area but not a lot of people walked across the bridge or see the tower up close. It's full of history & strolling along the bridge feels like you are thrown back in time. I always feel safe going there but i suggest going with a friend since it's a few minutes walk from the subway station/168 th street. Most of the time the bridge is isolated except for delivery guys on motorcycles. Don't forget to bundle up when its cold. It can get chilly & windy up there. Water & head cover during warmer months is also essential.
