I'm really unsure how to rate this place .... It takes a pretty sturdy stomach to take the smell in here most of the time. My sister will never set a toe inside as her nose is exceptionally sensitive. They have breads, cakes, pork, and other foods you can buy here ... They look interesting but the smell pretty much insures that I will absolutely never buy anything not in a sealed package from here. Sometimes it doesn't smell much at all .... On these days I always breath a sigh of relief. Everyone one here is super friendly and helpful to me when I'm looking for certain things. There are just things here that you can't find anywhere else. Thus the reason I have found myself there often and recommend (with warnings) to others. Part of me wishes they would take everything out (it is a bit muddled in there), give the whole establishment one good scrub down, and then just put everything back. However there is the part of me (in the majority) that kinda wants it to stay just the way it is. Guess its the grunginess that lends this place a slight charm .... Go figure! read more

I would give this a zero star rating if I could. Take a moment to listen and understand what I'm about to tell you. I went to Great China Food Market and I had an odd disrespectful experience. We were respectful, quiet, used manners to get by people, but we were getting weird looks/stares from all the older Asian customers in there, but this is not about the customers because they were just there to shop and they see someone different. The cashier in there bagged and handed everyone their receipt. Remember this. We've been here before and it wasn't the same respectful guy at the cash register, it was a different guy. For time stamps Saturday, July 18th, 2026, around or before 1pm if there were any cameras. When he was checking our items out, he threw the bag in front of us and threw the receipt in front of us. But then he started getting a bag ready for the next customer so he can bag their things. I was so thrown off by his disrespectful childish behaviour. Mind you, a grown man acting like this. I can't think of any way that we were rude, so that leads to one conclusion. This is how you'll get treated in Great China Food Market especially if you're brown. Apparently you have to look the part for people to respect you in there. But he seems fine with white people. Just don't go there. They're clearly disrespectful and they don't know they live in a diverse country. I hope that grown man child can learn from this and treat his brown customers better. As minorities, we should respect each other, I don't know why you feel so disgusted with us to the point where you can't even hand us the receipt, we can bag things on our own but the fact that you threw both the bag and the receipt in front of us while getting a bag ready for the next customer, it really made us feel disrespected. Why do you have so much hate in your heart? We are all human and we just wanted to buy some latiao, you didn't have to disrespect us like that while respecting all the other customers to make us feel small. Are we not worthy of your respect? I can't even say that it's implicit bias when you're fully aware of what you're doing. Shame on you. read more

The only reason why you should go here is because you can get a whole roast Chinese duck cheap. The other Chinese food, bakery, snacks, drinks, desserts, vegetables, dry goods, cooking utensils, Chinese decorations, medicine, and other items. The only exception is that they are somewhat friendly but they are reasonably priced. read more

This is place to get Asian grocery cheap and they are well stocked in inventory. If you are looking for quality ramen or drinks, they have a variety of goods. They have baked goods and roasted meat as well. The earlier you get there are fresh out of the oven. Again the price point is better than than there competitors. read more

I reallocated from Las Vegas, NV, a year ago now, and I've been looking for an Asian food store that offers the type of food I used to buy in Chinatown. This one comes pretty close. Don't let this place's modest appearance fool you, it's full of surprises, it offers all the snacks, teas and other Asian specialty items I like, and I was even able to discover a couple new things. They also offer barbecue and grilled meats, bakery goods, and other interesting stuff. I will definitely return to further explore and try new things. read more

I've got nothing but good memories of this place. My parents introduced me to it 30 years ago and now I take my family. Lots of exotic foods and things I can't find locally. It's always a cool experience going their buns are always awesome, and their bbq pork is to die for. My dad taught me to ask that the pork be sliced, so that's the only way I know it. Back in the day, you had to be there pretty early to get the best selection of buns. I can't do that anymore, so there's usually a smaller selection of buns and dumplings by the time I get there. If there's better in Memphis, I've yet to experience it. read more

It smells wonderfully weird in here. This is a great place to find every authentic Asian cooking ingredient, a bulk pack of chopsticks, whole cooked ducks, live crabs, or a hotdog baked into a bun. A large selection and a constant flow of customers result in variety and a good turnover of stock. This place is the real deal and should be experienced! read more

I've dropped by this place here and there over the years when I've needed a specific item and I can say unequivocally this lil' market has yet to disappoint. Today's visit was prompted by a scavenge for joss paper (ancestral money, Hell notes, prosperity paper, celestial cash, divine dollars) and they had ALLA DAT! Was exceptionally pleased with their selection and the prices were better than anywhere I've encountered online. So for that this goes on my list of Memphis gems. read more

This place is one of the oldest Asian markets in this town, and it certainly smells that way... Haha! That said, there is no better place to get fresh char sui (Chinese BBQ), char sui pork buns, and roast pork in this town. They also have the very best roasted duck from a grocery store too. So CHEAP but fabulously tasting!!! This place used to be one of the best dim sum restaurants, so they definitely know what they're doing. The owner got tired of running a restaurant and downgraded to just the market and sold half of what used to be the restaurant to what you now know as Ryu. Speaking of which, I've been spotting the owner of Noodle Bistro Bartlett here getting boxes of duck and char sui. They also have the best Chinese/Taiwanese ramen noodle/vermicelli selection than other stores. You can shop for seafood here and get it prepared in the kitchen on the cheap! For example, instead of order Cantonese Lobster at Asian Palace or something, you can call them here; they'll make it for you; and they will tell you when you should pick up. And they'll charge you perhaps $1 in addition per lobster, if it's even a dollar. They do have affordable fresh Asian produce, but it's a rather small selection. And I would avoid getting meats here, just not that fresh looking. read more

This place smells funny - not funny ha ha but funny like 'eww, what's that smell' :) The smell, by the way, is the smell of many dried fish and/or prawns mixed together with the smell of cooked food, an old and not so clean store lol. Sounds like the perfect place you want to shop at doesn't it lol! Well, I shop here sometimes because they have everything a Chinese cook would need in this little space. They cramp everything in here (another reason for the smell, I think lol) and if you can't find something, walk a couple of rounds and I'll bet'cha you'd see it eventually :) A lot of their freshly baked buns, bread and cakes are quite delicious... and they always have cooked Chinese bbq pork ready to bring home. Pick carefully - some pieces can be too fatty. This is also the place to find the hugest wok you can imagine at the lowest price! Woks, pots, dishes... everything you can find at some other Asian store, you can find it here... and more! It's probably the cheapest Asian grocery store in town. They have a huge customer base so as scary as it smells and looks, I've never had bad experience with what I buy here. They speak mostly Cantonese here but they have an assistant who is fluent in Mandarin. Of course, everyone here speaks English though the male boss seems reluctant sometimes to say anything in any language :) I love all my Asian stores in town :) read more

Come here for spices you can't anywhere else, cuts that gross out the typical American. Great place to get rice, cooked buns, and "exotic" produce. I love this place. I love to cook and I especially enjoy Asian food. This Asian supermarket is the best in Memphis. At least when compared to the three or four different Asian markets I've been to already. They have just about anything you could possibly need for any Chinese, Japanese or Vietnamese recipe. They have a wide variety of rices. They have many hard to find ingredients like fresh Thai Basil, lemon grass and fresh Kaffir leaves. Fresh and frozen seafood, cooked buns, Dim Sum, and a lot of fresh exotic produce. This place has a great variety of Chinese goods but I am really disappointed with their service. It was 6 months ago when they double charged me with two different amount. When I called to ask for my money back, the owner told me he would look into the account and call me back but he never did. Since then I've been calling them (because I don't have time to go to Memphis) for more than 10 times,the owner would say the same thing every single time, that he would check it out and call me back!! BUT HE NEVER DID!! Just be careful when you are paying. Apparently the guy at the cashier had make the same mistakes many times. read more

The Chinese Buns are the best in town with the egg tarts. A warning that you do need to check your INVOICE. This is the second time the old guy has over charged me on the manual register .. I had 3 boxes of buns (4 in each) for total of 12 but he charged me for FOUR extra (16) in total.. My fault for not checking the bill.... My wife will kill me for not verifying the paper tab. I normally have my money for exact change.. they do get sloppy with the receipt so just be careful here and at any place you shop. read more

Run of the mill cluttered small family store. But it was pretty clean, which was a nice change from some of the other markets. We got one of the baked rolls with the hotdog. Was very good! The bread had a wonderful browned color and had a sweet shiny crust. read more

This is my go to Asian market. It may looked cramped and may even smell funny but they have everything I need and crave, especially baked buns, BBQ pork, roast duck and Chinese roast pork. The selection of produce is good and I believe every Thursday is when they're truck comes so come weekend the produce is fresh. They even have balut ( google it) and Asian spices that takes up the whole isle, which I'm pretty sure that's where the funny smell comes from. read more

This is the best Chinese/Asian market in the city and I've been to them all. It's the only one that sells Chinese pastries made and baked fresh on site. The barbecue pork is good as is the crispy roast pork. Be warned though... you have to hit it at the right time. Some days are fresher than others as far as the prepared food goes. Sometimes it sits out for a bit under a heat lamp, although the pastries are left out at room temperature. Fortunately, the turnover rate is high so the pastries aren't there too long. This is also the best place to get Chinese vegetables, but you need to come on a Friday or Saturday. They get their shipments in on Thursday afternoon and are usually sold out by Sunday. If you go any other day of the week you'll have to poke through the picked over stuff. Prices are very cheap here as well. Staff speaks minimal English, so if you need help finding an exotic ingredient you might be on your own. read more

We love the coconut buns, they also freeze reasonably well. The egg yolk tarts are okay, the pork buns are better, though I wish they would cooperate with a local bbq joint to include better pork. Of course that would be a different store and price structure entirely. read more

By far, it's my favorite Asian market and Memphis. The service is great, much much better than the one in Midtown on Cleveland (where service is nonexistent) and much more user-friendly than the two big ones on Ridgeway and Winchester, respectively, off 385. Also, the prices are much better than the larger stores. Admittedly, it may depend on what you're looking for, but I go out of my way to go here. Thank you. read more

I've been shopping here for over 9 years and not because I love the place but rather because it's one of 2 places in the entire city of Memphis that carries Asian foods. Their sticky buns and bbq pork are good but I recently was really turned off by a tiny cockroach crawling around the bbq pork and flies landing on the sticky buns. It's not worth it to me to risk eating something a roach crawled on or that could possibly have one inside without me knowing. The place is really filthy. The place smells of rotting seafood so I definitly wouldn't but their fresh fish. Seafood should NOT smell bad or fishy. The floors havent been cleaned in God only knows how long, and I even once saw a big smashed cockroach on the floor.I will still shop there but only for the sealed jarred sauces(oyster sauce etc..) and none of the cooked foods. I don't think the health department visits this place at all. read more
