I get my hair cut twice a year. The first cut is either at the end of June or early July. I tend to take vacation then and realize that I'm so sick of throwing my hair up in a ponytail. The second cut is in December. It tends to be when I'm on vacation, after doing a ton of work to get a software release out the door. My software release duties have been offloaded this year. I am thankful. I felt like I was taken for granted for years. I now have three colleagues (yep, it's plural) who have taken over. It means that I am less stressed and I can get my hair cut before I go on vacation in December. Go, me! A week ago, I had planned on getting my hair cut yesterday. I tend to go on a Saturday because it's just nice to casually start my weekend off getting something nice done to my hair. What did I not anticipate? On Friday, the Ontario government announced that York region would go into lockdown on Monday. It meant that folks in my area would go into panic mode hoarding toilet paper and such again. Haircuts also fall into this category. My go-to place to get my hair cut is Great Clips. Hairdressers do a great job cutting my hair. Prices are decent. I'm not fussy. Just chop off three or four inches off my hair length and I'm the happiest person. I check in using the Great Clips app. It's convenient and reserves your name in the queue. My usual Great Clips location is on Copper Creek Drive. Years ago, there were at least three other locations in Markham, but they have all closed down. The wait time was an hour. Crazy! I did not feel like waiting in the rain, which would be the worst case. I looked at the lone Great Clips location in Stouffville and the wait time was even worse at 100 minutes. Nope, I'm not going there. I then looked at Richmond Hill. It has two locations. This one had a wait time of three minutes. I checked in after visiting Shoppers Drug Mart to fetch a parcel. This Great Clips is in a plaza that I visited often years ago. The Taco Bell is still here with a drive-thru. The Burger King has been replaced with a Wendy's. Canada Computers has moved across from its old location. I frankly didn't know about this Great Clips until I checked in. It's sandwiched between Ten Ren's Tea on the left and Pizza Pizza on the right. There was ample parking at around 1 pm. I backed into a spot and walked over. I walked in. All five staff members simultaneously welcomed me. I was not expecting that, but it was nice. One of them asked if I had checked in. I had. My name was the first one on the monitor. I felt like I was a VIP. The woman asked that I sanitize my hands and take a seat. There were two folks from the same family seated. I sat by the door, near the coat hangers. When their family member was done, I moved so I could physically distance myself from everyone and they could get their coats. A nice woman said that she was ready for me. I learned that her name was Maryam. I asked how she spelled her name. She said, "Mary, like yours, and just add am." It was cool. She asked what I wanted done. I told her that I'd like getting three inches off my hair. I also wanted a bob. She nodded. Here's the coolest thing. She guessed my heritage. I normally cringe when folks guess because they are way off the mark. "You are either Chinese or Indian," she said, looking into my eyes with a pretty beaded black mask on. "You're technically right on both guesses. I'm Chinese. My parents were born in India." There's a first. I was so impressed. I also enjoyed our conversation while she cut my hair. She admitted that she's chatty. I didn't mind it. I tend to be more chatty as I get older. She asked me how short the back should be. I was good with her original finger measurement. She used a trimmer and then asked me to look again. I said that she could go shorter. She loved that decision. We understood each other, which is half the battle when you're getting your hair cut. You could tell that she loves what she does. I was so pleased with my new 'do. She was, too. At one point, she tossed my hair around like a salad and exclaimed, "I am so happy with your haircut!" I loved her enthusiasm. I also enjoyed seeing how much volume my hair had afterwards. She has two children, 24 and 28 years of age. She confided that she is always worried about them. I let her know that it's a mom instinct and it never goes away. My mom is like that and I'm a grown woman. She agreed. She went on to trim my bangs. It's nice to get pampered! I thanked her. She was great dusting me off. She looked down at my purple Converse sneakers and said that she loved them. We both love purple. She gave me coupons for haircuts down the road. I paid using debit and tipped her. She was kind to come over and provide me with her name, although I will have the spelling etching in my memory. I may have found another Great Clips to call my usual spot. I had a wonderful experience. Hours are extended this weekend before the lockdown. (442) read more

Very welcoming greeting when I first walked in. I did wait a bit for the mad dash to the salons but I was very lucky to have found Maria. I brought some Pinterest pictures and she listened to exactly what I wanted. So very happy!!! Due to covid health a safety they were unable to wash or blow dry my hair. I would have given NEGATIVE 4 stars if I could! I gave $5 tip for both kids. It is not much, but I regretted it. I wonder if I can ask for a refund and sue them for emotional damage for my daughter. Bottom line - if you care what your hair or your child's hair looks like, DON'T go. The 'stylist' can do an okay job for boys under 8 and men over 60. These so called stylist are not trained to do anything other than using the electric buzzers. My daughter is almost 8. She has a lot of hair and it is getting frizzy. I asked the lady to layer her hair and keep the length. It was not demanding, was it? She randomly grabbed my daughter's hair in bulk and chop it off. There was no system to it. It was random. So in the end, the hair looks like a dog has chewed it off. I am very upset right now. I actually want to cry. I don't want this to happen to any of your kids, or you. My advice - don't go! Any location is like this. I am not particularly against this location or this lady. WARNING: These so - called stylists are not trained to cut hair! It is definitely overpriced. Very quiet and not busy. We came on Saturday for my teenager girl hair cut. We paid $20 and the hair cut was quick. My girl seems to be happy. I think it is a little too pricy for a simple hair cut for a girl. The hairdresser is very cold, not feeling welcomed. One hairdresser stood up to greet us and the other one kept reading her newspaper, did not even look up. If you need a quick fix, it might be a good location. read more

I've been there two times and the results are mixed. First visit was with Elham, and she did a pretty good job. I decided to return and was assigned Lucy. Lucy unfortunately did not follow instructions well ... I asked for 1/2" off the top and instead she buzzed my hair all the way down TO 1/2". I'm not sure how I could be clearer as the little piece of paper they print off also has the same instructions. Sometimes it sucks to wear glasses because you can't see what the stylist is doing... In anycase just be careful and repeat your instructions multiple times and hope for the best ... read more

If you care about your appearance or hair at all, do not go to this salon. Before visit my hair was beautiful however needed to be cleaned up, so my foolish self-figured that this salon would suffice. I was very clear with the stylist less than an inch off the top, just trimmed to around my brow line when it was down (my hair is generally in a quiff). However, despite the small task at hand, the stylist managed to leave me in tears. Instead of following the directions and doing as asked the imbecile cut my hair to the point where I look like a toddler whos drunk mother had to cut gum out of there hair. Multiple times during the haircut I told her that she had gone too far, and she kept insisting that she was just evening it out as I neared closer and closer to baldness. After the haircut was over, my hair was left uneven about 3 inches shorter than specified and utterly horrendous. As a person who cares about there appearance and likes to not look like they just survived a Flowbee accident, I am appalled. So I plead to anyone reading this not as a disgruntled customer but as a victim of the hate crime that is this haircut, avoid this salon. If for whatever reason you insist upon punishing your hair avoid the butcher who did this to me, she is older (50 or 60-year-old) middle eastern women named Mahshad. read more
