First of all I had a hard time choosing a Dentist. Seemed like all were 3 stars or below. I tried not to look at the Covid time period. This location is 615 Slaughter Lane. I had a terrible toothache. I showed up and they worked me in the schedule. Said I did not have any problem with my tooth but gum recession and periodontal disease. Thought I did a good job keeping my teeth healthy, guess not . The Dentist, Dr Acorn was kind. Gentle on my mouth, and thorough in explaining everything. Made an appointment with the periodontist, Dr. Lalvani. He is straight forward, honest and right to the point about the treatment. The office personal are very efficient and basically did above and beyond scheduling and helping me . Glad I came here. Great customer service, easy on your mouth, and thorough in their examinations. Posting this so others can make an informed decision. At a recent visit, I was told I had four cavities and that I needed a "deep cleaning" (scaling and root planing) due to Gingival infection. These recommendations were presented as medically necessary and somewhat urgent. The plan total? $1014.50 Based on past experience with corporate dental chains, I chose not to proceed and instead went back to my previous independent dentist, whom I trust and had originally found years ago after a similar corporate dental situation elsewhere. That second evaluation was clear and thorough. Findings: * No cavities * No periodontal disease * No need for a deep cleaning * Normal exam and gum measurements The appointment ended with a routine cleaning, scaling, polish, and evaluation. No additional procedures. No treatment plan. Because none were needed. No cavities found. This was not a close or subjective call. The procedures recommended at Great Expressions were simply not supported by the independent exam. I understand dentistry is a business, but it is also healthcare. In large corporate practices, incentives can matter, and in my case, unnecessary procedures were recommended. If you choose to go here, I strongly suggest: * Asking for probing depths and clinical findings before agreeing to a deep cleaning * Requesting clear, itemized explanations for any recommended procedures * Getting a second opinion before proceeding I'm glad I trusted my instincts and verified everything elsewhere. Don't come here. The only nice thing about the office is the extremely kind front desk lady, I believe her name is Brenda. I booked my first cleaning here in March. They only saw me for x-rays and an exam then said they'd have to bring me back for a cleaning. I schedule my cleaning for end of May. On the DAY OF the appointment the office calls and says they have to cancel it because they don't have a hygienist. I said when can you reschedule. They said they don't know but they'll call me. I end of calling them twice in June to see when they can get me in. The first time they said they don't know because they still don't have a hygienist. I call AGAIN a week later and ask when they can get me in. A different front desk lady says I can come in tomorrow (I called on Monday and they said they can get me in on Tuesday). I said I don't due to work and short notice and asked when the next appt is. They said I don't know. I said what do you mean you don't know? They said they ONLY have a hygienist for Tuesday June 23rd and they don't know when they'll have another. I called out how I had to be the one to call them and they never called me. How can you even run a dental office without a hygienist? I immediately called my insurance and switched to a new dental office. Waste of my time. read more

Extremely disappointed with our experience at Great Expressions Dental. From our very first visit, the office felt completely disorganized. They couldn't verify our insurance even though I had already provided all the information. Brenda at the front desk was the only helpful person there--she was kind, professional, and clearly overwhelmed trying to manage everything on her own. The office is clearly understaffed. During the first visit, the dental assistant was nice, but the overall experience felt off and left me unsure whether they even had the correct treatment plan in place. I was genuinely worried they might pull the wrong tooth based on how disorganized everything felt. They had us come back for a second appointment to complete the work, and that visit was just as frustrating. They again said they couldn't verify our insurance--even while I had my insurance on speakerphone providing the information directly to them. They told me their corporate office had to verify it, yet they still took my son back, completed all the work, and then charged me full price out of pocket. The office manager was rude and told me verifying insurance is only a "courtesy," not a requirement. I asked about a refund since the insurance was clearly active, and they told me I'd have to call the insurance company--despite them already being on the call and confirming coverage in front of the staff. To make matters worse, the hygienist wasn't very friendly, and the dentist didn't even show up to the appointment--apparently because her car was blocked in at home. We were originally told all the work could still be done with nitrous, but then they changed the story and said we'd have to do it without nitrous, or come back at 4 PM (even though our appointment was at 8 AM), or reschedule for another day. I took off work specifically to get everything done in one visit, and we were in the office from 8 to noon, with only about one hour spent on actual treatment--the rest of the time was wasted dealing with insurance issues and waiting. I've since pulled our records and canceled all future appointments. I wouldn't recommend this office to anyone. Brenda did her best, but she's the only positive part of this entire experience. read more

Our entire family starting seeing Dr. Acorn recently. My husband and I had let our dental health lapse and I had so much anxiety about it. Everyone has been SO very wonderful. Brenda, in the front office, is the most kind person I've met recently. They have been accommodating with our schedules. And most importantly, we have received stellar care. They caught a lesion in my xrays and got me in to see the periodontist within days. And my hygienist, Anisa, gave me my smile back. I cannot say enough positive things. read more

I hadn't seen a dentist since arriving in Austin over two years ago. So I searched and found Great Expressions. They had a decent rating so they passed the first test. I appreciated the friendliness of all of the staff. Everyone was prompt and expressed a sense of urgency. Yet, I didn't feel rushed. What I really appreciated was the thoroughness of the work that is done. You can tell everyone takes pride in their work. You leave feeling like your mouth was really cared for. Easily the best place in Austin to get a professional cleaning, filling, or any other kind of dental services. You'll be greeted by the lovely and friendly Brenda at reception. Stacy is my hygienist and the dental cleanings she provides are always thorough and reliable. She performs with the highest amount of attention to detail. Mrs. Acorn did my first filling today and she was awesome. I felt no pain whatsoever and I wasn't even numbed for the procedure. It was quick and easy! I made an appointment as a new patient for a cleaning and didn't find out until I was already through with the dr. Exam portion that I was not getting a cleaning... that was the only reason I made an appointment .... Apparently this office does the Dr exam and then schedules a cleaning at a later date (there's no availability until October). Then upon talking to the manager about the miscommunication they seemed to get defensive with me, slapped a 600$+ bill for my next visit in front of me, and after I told them I wasn't doing anything but a cleaning the manager told me that I was on the verge of needing a root canal-- not the doctor... the manager. Like um ... I highly doubt that considering my previous dentist was on top of it and had no concerns of it being anything that severe. I have no symptoms, no sensitivity, no damage to the tooth.... Weird thing for a manager to try to diagnose or say something like that. Anyways they were highly unprofessional. They wasted my time, my insurance, and my opportunity to get a cleaning this year was screwed over because I will not be letting anyone there touch me. I felt scammed honestly. read more

I went to Great Expressions South Austin for a new crown on a dental implant. The dentist was great but they charged me and my insurance company for a new abutment that I never received. The dentist made the new crown without making a new abutment. I have tried and tried for about a year to get my money back but I am just given the run around. There were also overpayments made for services my husband received. Do not use this awful place unless you can afford to pay for services not rendered. In good faith we paid all the money they asked for upfront. We trusted them and had no idea that we were paying for fraudulent charges. read more

I started going to this office because of Dr Von Sedt.After he moved this office is a nightmare. The office manager is rude and thinks she owns the place. The turnover of dental hygienists is frightening I saw a female dentist who told me I needed a deep cleaning of my teeth and that I needed a root canal without even taking X-rays I sought a second opinion and the dentist took extensive X-rays of my teeth and told me my teeth were healthy and that I didn't need a deep cleaning or root canal. The dentist and dental assistanct looked over my opened mouth without a mask during the COVID-19 pandemic. The reception confirmed my x-ray was covered by insurance - it was not. They could have simply taken another type of x-ray that would be covered by the insurance if they had checked more carefully. And during my visit, I waited in the chair for hours. I told them I had to leave to get back to my child. I was told they would finish with my work in an hour. I was 1 hour and 45 minutes. They have no respect for my time. And the male doctor was no respect for women, calling me several times, "young lady." Unacceptable. I will not go back. read more

I have been going to the South Austin location for a little over a year. My husband and I both see Dr. Von Seht who has always been wonderful. He is very personable. It may sound weird - but the last two dentists I went to, I always felt as if they were talking to me like I was a child in the dentist chair instead of an adult. Each visit, the hygienists were just as great. It actually surprised me how informative they even were. They are always giving good tips about cleaning and what spots to focus on without making me feel bad. I don't remember past dental hygienists at other offices being so informative. One huge factor on my rating is how I've seen a huge change in my husband's attitude about the dentist. Until visiting this office, my husband was extremely nervous and anxious when it came to the dentist. I am so glad to finally be able to say he has finally found a place he feels comfortable. So with all that said, I have to give the full five stars. read more

Do not recommend this dental office. They added on $50 for an X-ray that is supposed to look at your bone health, however the dentist didn't even mention anything about my bone health. Also charged me an extra $40 on "accident" for no reason at all. You have to pay a $10 fee for the masks that they use when they should be paying for that themselves not the customers. When I went back to address all the extra fees the front desk lady brought out the statement of what they billed my insurance and she stated I'm not sure why we charged all these other extra fees to your insurance. This place is just trying to take your money. Do not go here. read more
