The dental office is dated and dingy. They have a sign at check in that threatens to reschedule your appointment if you're more than 10 minutes late yet they lack the same courtesy for their customers. I got to the office prior to my 12pm appointment and was still waiting at 12:40pm to be seen. I was looking to establish a new primary dentist but I canceled my appt and I will not be going back. They need to do better at scheduling - waste of time. read more

Well, the care was OK. The most disappointing thing was how misleading the billing was. I asked them if they had checked with my insurance for things to be covered and I supposedly only owed $17. Flashback to about later I receive a bill for over $100. When I inquired about it, they said, they thought they knew what the insurance would cover and they didn't even though I had verified it with them. Extremely disappointed by this. Ok so I was looking for a New HOM dentitst on the Metlife site and they had a pretty decent review, So called and Made an Appt. Well like a Good online Review person I did research and I found some not so good reviews, So I went anyway and had my first sit down and Xrays they did nothing else but evaluate and gave me a bill so I could sell off my second born to pay the charges. I want a cleaning and thats all. I wont go back, the last time I went not knowing this was the same practice I went to before about was a female dentist who let me know I needed to have ALL MY FILLINGS replaced. If I hadn't gone back to the office and asked them about it, then asked a second time, they probably would have never told me a credit was due. Good in the beginning but it all went downhill after that! The Great Expressions office Riverside was super kind and considerate before and during the process of me getting a top and bottom partial. My dentist is a very nice person. I had heard bad things about them but I wanted to give them a chance. First of all the whole partial is just bad. I've had three adjustments already and they told me it may take up to six visits to get it right. One of the dental assistants told me I have to get used to not being able to pronounce letters like 's' 't' and 'z.' That's not how it's supposed to be. They rarely answer the phone for current patients when I call and they don't return calls. I almost always have to press the number for new patients in order to actually talk to someone. I will be notifying my dental insurance company about them. Please choose a different dentist for your dental care. Don't take a chance like I did. Read the other reviews as well! read more

Been experiencing severe jaw pain for a week. Called and the office worked me in as an emergency. Dr. Ovsiy examined and gave direction on the possibilities on what could be issue. She also referred me out as precautionary to an oral surgeon to see if there is any issues related to my jaw surgery back in 1989. She covered all the areas. Very good at her job and had an awesome bedside manner which a lot dentist do not.. I highly recommend this Dentist. The staff is awesome as well. Greeted and very friendly.. Went above an beyond on assisting on order a a bite guard for night wear. Thank you very much. Not out of pain but the treatment planned helped until I get into the Oral Surgeon. read more

The office has a lot of new faces. Dr. Ovsiy is the new dentist. She came up with a plan to address all the bad dentistry that has happened in my mouth. She is very good judging from the work done so far. She is somewhat of a perfectionist which is just fine with me. And her supporting staff members are all wonderful. Update: Was going through my emails and noticed a revised "treatment plan" from GE Riverside. Didn't look at it, assuming it was a duplicate of the one we received for $2200. Well, the price went down with this one...different costs for the fillings and the "pulpal treatment" went from $140 a tooth to $45 to $35 a tooth for a total of $1100. Still, it is work on teeth that don't need it but really, again they think I'm stupid. Which cost is correct? I checked my plan documents and these prices are way below what the insurance company quoted. So if I allowed them to do this work, which I won't, but if I did, would I then get a bill from insurance saying I owed more??? Again, buyer beware...I am amazed and will NOT be going back to this location! Original Review: If I could give them a negative 1, I would. After going to this office for years, (we usually saw Dr. Boldt, whom I was told they fired...how unprofessional to tell me that) I took my daughter in for her standard 6 month cleaning and this time she was up for x-rays. BTW, we have gone every 6 months to the dentist since she was little, in that time she has had maybe 2 cavities and she is 16, never needed braces - nothing. This time after they clean and do x-rays, they hand me a "treatment plan" for 10 cavities and 10 pulpal treatments...$2200 total. I am shocked! When I questioned this major turn around in her situation, I was told (with a snarky voice), "Well, you can get a second opinion"...and I did, from a real dentist. The "second opinion" took real x-rays (digital) and come to find out she had 2 minor cavities. That's a lot of difference from 10 to 2, then I asked the "second opinion" what the $140 a pop "pulpal treatment" was, they were not sure...go figure! So, my suggestion - don't go to this Great Expressions...they were willing to do unnecessary treatment on my daughter, drilling on teeth that didn't need it and were willing to charge me for unnecessary extra treatments on teeth that were also fine...I was insulted and down right angry that they think I'm stupid enough to let them put holes in her teeth just because they said so...unbelievable. I have been coming to this dental office for years. Unlike some other negative reviews, no one has ever tried to "upsell" me to a deep cleaning or recommended a bunch of unnecessary treatments. They have actually even offered more affordable options when necessary. I get in, I get out. Everyone has always been professional and nice. My only minor complaint is that sometimes it is hard to get someone on the phone and it can take a long time to get an appointment, but that seems pretty standard. read more

I have been going to this location after I stopped going to Normandy Dentistry. Now I am having an issue with this Dentist but this dentist overcharged me by 126.23 and my insurance covered all of my services besides $20 for fluoride. I have faxed over the documentation from my dentist as well as the overcharge on my credit card requesting a refund that I have not received a credit or a refund. I have heard several patients when I'm in the office complaining about the overcharge and requesting refunds. This is the first time it has happened to me with this Dentist and I will no longer be a patient of this office. read more

I came here after shattering a tooth at 9:35pm on a Monday night, I called the next morning at 7 am, and even though I wasn't even a patient of theirs yet, they were able to get me in at 10 am. I got there around 9:50 in anticipation of 1000 pieces of paper to fill out ( There were of course, but it's cool, I'm a nurse, I know the drill). As soon as my paperwork was filled out I don't think I waited 5 minutes before being called to the back. The staff were very polite. Dr Boldt came in within 7-8 minutes to see me, and he was SO NICE! He's funny, personable and was willing to answer any questions. I didn't feel at all like he was rushing to leave the room to see the next patient! I have to go back in 2 weeks and I will write an update review! Fingers crosssed that I get the same treatment. P.S. I love this place. I was shocked to read the negative reviews on this site and I read them all to try to determine why they would be giving bad reviews. It seems that many complaints are that it is expensive. Well first people, you get what you pay for. You really want to cheap on your teeth? And second, dental prices are affected significantly by the insurance industry. There is a reason that you get dental insurance. I haven't found their prices to be much higher than any place else and yes, it is expensive but that's the price of dental health. I saw one reviewer complaining that they recommended she replace all her fillings. Fillings have a shelflife like anything else and you cannot keep them forever particularly if you have metal fillings, those contain seriously harmful products. if they didn't tell you to replace those fillings which contain toxic products they would be doing you a disservice. Google it if you don't understand the contents of those old metal fillings. Everyone in the office has a good sense of humor. Dr. Boldt is always there with a smile and a joke. I haven't met any staff member that is not extremely nice. I have been pleased with the work they have done for me and I don't mind paying for quality work. I have been going to this dental office for about 15 years. I really like Dr Boldt and the staff that works there. I actually sought out the office manager one day to tell her how nice everyone treated me and how I always looked forward to seeing everyone. I have dental insurance so I don't pay full price for dental care. I think no matter where you go dental is not cheap if you don't have insurance. You can't fault this dental office for that. I've never had any billing problems and they have always been very clear in explaining any charges beforehand. read more

I have been going to this dentist for 6+ years since I moved to Jacksonville. It is close to my office and home. I have had a few different hygienist and have not had any problems. The girls at the front desk are questionable sometimes....not very professional. I have cancelled my future appointments with this dentist and moved to a different dentist because of their $15.00 COVID cleaning fee. They already use gloves, masks and aprons and should be cleaning between patients. When asked why the fee, they said "corporate". They did not tell me about the fee until AFTER my cleaning and threatened to send me to collections and harm my credit if I refused to pay it. I have $15.00, but it is the principle. This is part of doing business, you should not pass a cleaning fee onto customers. I paid it in August 2020 because they threatened me, but I will not pay this month. I am encouraging all of my friends, family and co-workers that I have referred to not do business with them as well. I hope more will do the same. read more

I moved in in Jacksonville in November 2017. I looked and got a good review about this office in Riverside. Dentist and hygienists are very good, very professional, and very friendly however the customer service at the front desk is very disappointed. It's another dimension when you have to deal with them. They are not friendly, want to be polite but you can see is not natural. I felt like I am in a public office applying for benefits. I do not understand why they do not try to please the patients who are paying for a good service from the front desk to the dentist and all professionals who have to deal with. I have to go every three months to the dentist office which means I am spending good money even though I have dental insurance (copayment). Last time that I did my appointment I called and changed it from March to February 14 at 7:49 I did. My husband confirmed the appointment when he went for his dental appointment on Martín Luther King day. I put in my calendar. I went last Friday and the lady at the front desk told me I didn't have the appointment for that day. I took my hours off from my work to go to the appointment. She stated to me she didn't want to argue with me. Really? She didn't want to argue with the customer? Instead of solve the problem? Them I asked for the front desk manager, she stated manager was not in the office that day and she is in charge of the front desk. I give the dentist and the work a solid 4 but the office side of things is lacking. When you speak with them you feel like you are wasting their time. I needed a crown and the dentist told me that if the temporary came out or cracked to call them right away. My temp came out on a Friday around noon so I called right away and the person at the desk said the earliest appt was Monday at 10. OK, I get that they were busy but when I explained to them that the dentist instructed me to call right away and asked if waiting until Monday was ok and her response was, "well, that's the earliest appointment we have". No instructions for making sure that things don't get worse. No alternate options (they are part of a chain, maybe have another dentist put a new temp in at a different office?) This office will not perform a regular teeth cleaning until you come in for an initial exam. In my case, I was denied the regular teeth cleaning even after my initial exam because they concluded my treatment plan MUST include special teeth cleanings that are not covered by my insurance plan. No other dentist has ever suggested I needed special treatments on my teeth. The assistant was condescending when questioned about not being able to get a regular cleaning my insurance will cover. She stated they will not perform that until I get the special cleaning treatment. I went in for that yesterday. They sprayed water in between my teeth and scraped at the backs of my teeth for 5 minutes and tried to hard sell me fluoride. Unacceptable. The hygienist also suggested that if i go against the treatment plan, which includes purchasing a $20 bottle of fluoride, the dentist might order more special treatments. I opted out of the fluoride purchase. When I thought i was FINALLY going to get my regular teeth cleaning scheduled, I was informed NO. I must scheduled another appt. with the dentist first so he can either give the go ahead for the regular cleaning, or order more special (expensive) treatments. The women at the front desk were nasty towards each other and openly unhappy. This whole place gives me the creeps and this "treatment plan" is infuriating. I would switch dentists immediately if my insurance carrier didn't have this one listed for me. I just want my teeth cleaned! I hate it here. read more

Do NOT go to this dentist's office or this chain. They don't practice ethical dentistry and have terrible customer service. Read below: First of all, they require an initial evaluation, at which time they determine what kind of cleaning needs to be performed. Instead of going ahead with a general cleaning (if that's all you need), they make you come back. That's if you're lucky. They told me and my wife that we have advanced periodontal disease (we're both in our late 20's, early 30's), despite both of us having our teeth recently cleaned and examined by a different dentist (I had extensive root and scaling cleaning done by the other dentist as well). The previous dentist didn't mention anything about her gum disease at her last cleaning (by her previous dentist). On the initial visit (evaluation), they did an FMX x-Ray on my wife, without asking her when the last time she had one or a panoramic x-Ray (which isn't supposed to be performed but once every 3-5years due to radiation and the fact that insurance won't pay for it within that time frame). They didn't explain to her what kinds of x-rays they were going to perform and didn't ask or check with our insurance on when the last one was performed or ask us to check. She had just had one performed a little over a year ago at her old dentist. They recklessly and carelessly performed this x-Ray, instead of one of the less invasive x-rays that our insurance will pay for (twice a year). There was zero mention of them performing this kind of x-Ray - they just did it. After the first visit, we got a bill in the mail from Great Expressions for the full amount for the FMX X-ray, because insurance obviously wouldn't cover it. We then came in to the office for her next visit (scaling and root cleaning) and inquired about why they didn't ask us or inform us of the X-ray they took on her(we spoke to the insurance company before going back to the office). The first person we spoke to agreed and said that we should have been asked about it and/or they should have called the insurance company to inquire on when the last one was done (not only to check to see if they would cover them, but for health reasons due to the radiation). She said they would work with us on taking care of the bill and not to worry about it. After my wife's root and scale, we go to check out. The office manager (the heavy-set lady) said it was our responsibility to know what they were going to perform on us and that we were responsible for the charge and they would not work with us at all. She was very rude and when I politely stated to her that we had ZERO idea what they were going to perform, either ahead of time or during the actual exam, that it is impossible to know unless they tell us (either verbally or in writing) or ask us when we last had one performed. She became loud and aggressive with us. I eventually explained to her that they have an ethical responsibility to notify the patient of any procedures (x-rays during initial exams are not explained at all in any paperwork, including a treatment plan - which you get AFTER the initial exam). She continued to place the blame on us. We refused to pay the X-ray bill and paid to have our X-rays copied. We paid what we owed (minus the X-ray bill) and explained to them why we wouldn't be back. What's even funnier is there was a corporate person at the office while this was happening and he couldn't of cared less. We explain everything to him and he said "sorry, bye". Just went yesterday for my first (and last time). The whole experience was bizarre. I had a 9:00am appointment for what I thought would just be an exam and cleaning. I wasn't seen until 9:45am. I was eventually introduced to Dr. Tannen who sounded like she was on cocaine due to how overly excited she was just meeting me. Dr. Tannen continued expressing her excitement by repeatedly thanking me for coming in as a patient. It came off as very desperate and just plain odd. I was told I need a root canal, crown and filling, wisdom teeth removed and an additional tooth removed. The crown and filling alone was quoted at $493! That's with insurance! Three hours later I was given a quote for a cleaning, then a second quote after the first was miscalculated and was told it was somewhere between $53 and $217. What. The. Hell. The dentist and Dental Hygienists were very nice. However, the office staff was not knowledgeable and I was consistently over-billed for services paid by my insurance. When calling in to have refund initiated I was always referred to the office manager who was never there. Great Expressions Dental Centers in Riverside is the best dentist office I have been to since I have lived in Jacksonville. Dr. Paul Boldt is amazing, personable, and cares about his patients. My hygienist, who I see regularly every six months, is the best. She is genuine, professional, friendly and though no one I know likes going to the dentist office even for a cleaning, she makes the visits more comfortable. I am impressed how she remembers details about me even though I only see her biannually. I have changed dentist offices several times over the years due to changes in dental insurance, and have not been happy anywhere else. So many other dentist offices have been impersonal and try to "up-sell" services that seem unnecessary. When my insurance changed a couple of years ago and I found this office was back on my list, I was thrilled to come back and hope to stay. The office has early morning hours, starting at 7:00 a.m. so it is perfect for a busy professional to get in and out of the dentist office before the work day begins. Perhaps because I take these early appointments I never have to wait. The receptionists have also been upbeat and helpful. Even when I have to change my appointments around a few times, they never seem to mind. While I cannot say I actually look forward to my dentist visits, I know that I will be greeted with a smile and leave with my own smile. read more

The dentures I have were made by Dr. Paul Boldts' lab (I suppose) because Dr. Boldt made the impressions . He did not explain to me at that time my dentures may not fit properly due to ridges and "bumps" I have in my mouth. When my new dentures were made, I went to the office and the hygentist made a few adjustments to the dentures so they would fit better. They never fit well. I made 4 or 5 trips back to the office in the few months following for adjustments. I finally told myself to deal with the fit. I've worn the dentures now for approx. 2 years at this point and they need re-lining, so I saw Dr. Boldt today in his office. He examined me and told me I need to have oral surgery to " smooth out the bumps " in my mouth and that would let the dentures fit right . I am way over 80 years old and diabetic and I told him I'm not a good candidate for surgery. Why did he not explain my problems when I went to him originally (about the condition of my mouth). I paid cash $2K for my dentures and my insurance paid the rest. I think he is not interested unless he sees more dollar signs and really give a "hoot" about some of his patients (perhaps elderly ones?). I will not recommend Dr. Boldt to anyone not even my little doggie!! His staff are just wonderful however! read more

I have lived in Jacksonville for 20 years now and have tried several dentist offices and even other Great Expression offices. The personnel at this office are the nicest I have come across and they always took my insurance when I was employed. Now I am retired and this office doesn't take my insurance, but I like them so much and feel so comfortable with the work they do, that I took out their protection plan, a discount plan, suggested by Cheryl. I have to pay a little more than I used to, but to me it is worth it. I also just met the new office manager Mark, and he was extremely inviting and friendly to speak with. I have never had to wait to be seen either. I have always gotten in at my appointment time. The office staff, hygienist, and Dr. Paul Boldt have all been very professional and extremely competent. Like a previous reviewer, I found the process for new patients to be prohibitive (i.e. initial visit to assess the type of cleaning needed, with a follow up appointment for the actual cleaning). As a working adult, two visits for what should be a standard 6 month cleaning is unacceptable. In addition, the lady who answered the phone was minimally helpful and not friendly at all.
