Absolute nightmare!!! I am beyond words with all this... so I went through this whole plan getting my teeth fixed and I was finally almost done when everything went to hell. I paid for an upper partial and was told "you only owe $500 because your insurance paid half"... now wouldn't you think that meant that the other half was paid for?! That was in February, now in May when it is finally finished and ready for pick up I get a call right before I go in to get it that my insurance didn't cover it. Apparently they never freaking billed my insurance company and my insurance ended in April so by the time they got around to billing I didn't have insurance any more! If I would have know I would have kept my insurance! Then on top of that, I call just a few days later saying I have the money so I'll just pay they tell me I have to schedule another appointment to get them! Just to pick them up!! I now have over $1000 invested and they are holding them hostage until the dentist gets back from vacation to "put them in my mouth" .... It's not medication, just hand them to me! Probably the best dental experience , Doctors were very kind, and I plan to be back ! Just know they will be recommending treatments that you weren't expecting, but that shouldn't take away from the experience, it may seem like an up sell, but if you value your oral health, at the very least consider it ! Dr smith is the most unprofessional , arrogant person I've met. I went in for my permanent crown . It didn't fit nor look well. She walked out on me leaving me with no crown. The manager Pat came in and offer to help. I was in total shock that this was the standard of work Dr smith was offering AND expect patients to be satisfied. I wish I had read the reviews before going there. Not recommending this place. Not going back. Can't and won't trust her. read more

I would like to express my frustration on this dental clinic under the care of Dr. Shannon Smith. I have never been happy the way she did my denture. She didnt do a great job and evrytime i call for repair, she is not around. I have so many complaints on her job but she never been there when I call. The rating should be lower than one star. This is a joke for a medical practice in the United States. I was a new patient and here was my experience: - I had a check up and went for a normal cleaning. I had a deep below the gums cleaning roughly 7 months before that. - At the end of the exam the dentist disappeared and sent them to someone else with a plan to do deep below the gums cleaning which was going to cost me about $3000 out-of-pocket after insurance. - I called and said I had just had this and definitely should not need it and just want a normal cleaning. - I was told to send him the paperwork from the last deep clean and then that would probably be fine. I sent it in and never heard back. A few days later I reached out again and didn't hear back. A few days later I reached out again and was told that the receptionist had been out of the office or two or more weeks without an out of office message but now someone would get back to me soon. - At some point I was told that the regular cleaning was fine and to come on in. It's too bad that wasn't done when I went in originally for it! - I sat down in the chair and the guy was going to do the $3000 cleaning. I only realized that because of an offhand comment he made. He had to do a bunch of research to see if he was doing regular cleaning. - when they scheduled me on the phone he said this Cleaning would be a total of $30 after insurance. They charge me about $100. Couldn't figure out why anybody has ever told me it would be $30. - They also scheduled me for a periodontal consultation directly after the second appointment for the cleaning which I'm now sure was just up selling me. - 40 minutes after that appointment was supposed to start it has not even started yet so I left. Once I realized they were charging me more than three times what they said they were going to charge me and thought about the person coming in to do the WRONG PROCEDURE on me and how I went in for a cleaning in the first place instead of doing the cleaning all they did was sending some kind of helper flash sales person with a $3000 dental plan, I realized I would never ever be back to this pitiful excuse for a dental office. This place tries to sell you procedures you may not need. High pressure tactics. I told them I do not want X-rays. They said it's ADA policy to have them. I told them I'm the patient and I make the decisions. Stop with the high pressure tactics. I needed four crowns and I just did not trust the female dentist to work on my teeth. I went elsewhere to a specialist and paid more than I wanted to but the result is outstanding work. Very unhappy with Dr Smith and don't want to see her again and since she is the DENTIST now, I can not get my teeth cleaned and I have been a patient over 5 years. Dr Smith was very unprofessional and told a staff member, in front of me that I was to cheap to have the antibiotic spray after my cleanings! I had a reaction to it and don't want it to happen again. They have told me for MONTHS that another dentist would be arriving!!!! Not yet so I am now looking for another dentist!!!! read more

Terrible customer service on the staff. Attempted to make a new patient appt for my son. Took the lady 10 min & 38 seconds just to get my information. I ask if she needed me to call back or if it would be faster to do online. I was then disconnected and I called back and spoke with a different person only to be put on hold. The lady came back and told me since we are not current patients. The current office we went to for a limited exam referred us to an endodontist. She proceeded to question me to why we can't go back to where we came from. I explained to her that it was a one time visit and we were also looking for a new general dentist. She told me it didn't matter how far away we were coming from we could only be given A consult. I've worked in the dental field (out of state) for over 15 years and have never been spoken to like this from dental staff ever. Clearly, they are not looking to build a rapport and gain new patients. Just from this customer service experience I would give the office zero stars. I went here for my cleaning every six months for a year and half. The last two visits they tried to convince me needed to do periodontal scaling and root planing. On my last visit they had three people try to convince me that I needed the cleaning despite the fact that there is no evidence outside of their word, insisting that I was risking my health by not doing the proceedure RIGHT THEN with my 9 year old daughter waiting for me in the office. I choose to leave without a cleaning to get a second opinion. Not only do I NOT need the cleaning they were pushing, but I was never checked for cavities the entire time under their care and now I need a crown. I feel this office wanted to take advantage of me and my insurance and I was not receiving good care. Overcharged. One bottle of Acclean flouride gel from the distributor cost 18.99. For less then a dime sized drop that was rubbed om my teeth then spit out i was charged 25 dollars, that means they make hundreds of dollars off of a bottle that costs 19. When told how i felt about it the manager looked at me like i was stupid and told me oh well. She was a spanish woman and i wish i had her name. I told her ill be finding a new dentist and she didnt seem to care to be bothered by it. I took my daughter to Great Expressions Dental Center of Stuart today and had the creepiest nonprofessional Hygienist of all time. He came to the waiting room and called her name when I got up with her, he said that that I could wait in the waiting room. When I told him that my daughter would not leave my site, he argued with me. She is 7 and has Autism. I asked to speak with someone. I was able to wait go back to the doorway as she had her x-rays taken. I noticed creepers the hygienist smacking on his gum. I politely asked him to not chew gum while cleaning my daughters teeth. He reached into his mouth and pulled out his gum. Gross... then I asked him to please wash his hands. He instead did a glove change without washing his hands. Super gross. YOU MUST WASH your hands before EACH and every glove change. Regardless, he then refused to clean my daughters teeth. He was already not going to clean my daughters teeth at that point. We received a new hygienist, who was very patient with us. I only wish I brought her sunglasses for the visit. Our former Dental office always placed sunshades on her since she is super sensitive to light. Things everyone should know: You never should find it acceptable to take someones child into a room alone. They accept a variety of insurance, and were able to see me right away. On my first visit, I saw Dr. Shumate, who was extremely nice and pleasant, and did everything he could to put me at ease. He resolved my immediate problem and then recommended that I come back to see the periodontist. I went through several grueling periodontal procedures, but now my mouth has never been healthier, and I no longer dread going to the dentist. read more

We moved from South Florida to Stuart 2 years ago and it was time for me to get a local dentist (I was driving an hour and to see my dentist of 20 years....Dr Ziemba the BEST). My husband's dental insurance has a short list of dentists only located in Martin County. I selected Great Expressions as he liked Dr Anderson who operates out of this office. Prior to my first visit, I had a sharp, unusual pain in a tooth & Great Expressions fit me in quickly (which is why they get a star). Unfortunately, Dr Anderson was unavailable & I was seen by Dr Smith. I had just read a negative review online about Dr Smith but gave thought I would go in & give her the benefit of the doubt. She, and her assistant, was nice (which is why they get 1 more star) but after reviewing my Xrays (which did not show any indication of infection or cavity) made a decision based on her exam & my description of pain that I needed (a costly) root canal. Luckily, I was suspicious (right, wrong or indifferent!) that was an incorrect diagnosis when I learned they could not squeeze me in for a month. Seemed like a very busy schedule for root canals. A second opinion & an ENT later, I had a sinus infection. While it's not a Dentist's job to diagnose a sinus infection, would be nice to rule it out (the sinus infection) when they notice the xray is clear vs. scheduling an unnecessary root canal. read more

Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. I was talked into obtaining a scaling once by them, then less than a year later was told I needed another scaling! I take care of my teeth, sure I could floss more (but who can't?), and find it extremely hard to believe that I would need two scalings in less than 1 year. I brush twice a day and use listerine twice a day. My teeth are in great shape, I barely have any plaque buildup. They try to up sell you at every opportunity and that is just disgraceful. I had heard others mention similar things prior to my going there, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Boy was I wrong to do that. read more

If you care about your teeth and your health stay away!!! I went to them for about 3 years and in that time I had a tooth infection that they never bothered to spot. Years of bleeding gums due to that tooth infection and all they did was inject costly antibiotics. A trip to the periodontist revealed a massive tooth infection that was coming from a failed root canal. Once the root canal was redone, my gums stopped bleeding and my health greatly improved. If Great Expressions had actually bothered to look at any of my x-rays over the 3 years I went to them, a lot of my suffering could have been avoided. Also at this location, they told me I had "severe" bone loss, which was a lie and lead to costly root planing and more frequent trips for routine cleaning. My new dentist says my bone loss is typical for a man my age and not "severe" at all. The dentist at this location also has a bad attitude - a total burnout. STAY AWAY!!! One more thing, they will also send you random bills with no explanation for what it's actually for. I'd call them looking for an explanation, and all they would say is, "We're not sure what's it's for, we'll call you back". And I'd never hear from them again, until they send me the same bill a month later. Happy ending though, my new dentist, love him! read more

What terrible people!!!!!!!!!! My son went there with 2 terrible tooth aches. He was in terrible pain. They pulled one of the bad teeth, but the second tooth they pulled was not the right one!!! Stopped in to inquire about experience of their on staff dentists. I was informed there was NO senior dentist on staff. After several questions with a not so friendly receptionist who had immediately went on defense rather than offense to try to woo my business, I was informed all their dentists on staff were in there mid thirties. Not what I was looking for as my previous experience with dentists of that generation/age has not been of quality work or service. What's advertised on the Insurance carrier's website as the list of dentists at this facility is proportionately different from what's advertised on their store front window. Big, big mistake going to Great Expressions in Stuart for extractions and my first upper denture. Should have done my research and read recent reviews, but my wife was going here due to our dental insurance and I thought it would be safe. Before the extractions, Dr. Smith's assistant attempted to take an impression to fit me for the new denture. She had to do it twice because both times, after 10-15 minutes, neither impressions came out quickly or cleanly. She was told the mixture was not correct allowing the impressions to not set up properly. When I left with the new denture, it did not fit correctly because due to it rocking from side to side when trying to chew something, it was digging into my upper gums. I was told not to take the denture out the first night, but due to the extreme pain of my upper gums, the swelling and bruising of the left side of my face, I called Dr. Smith later that evening. She said I could go ahead and take it out, and come in the next day for an adjustment. She wouldn't be in, but another dentist would take care of me and make another adjustment. I went in the next day and saw another dentist. While he was sitting on the stool next to me and examining my denture, he dropped the denture on the floor and a front tooth was broken off. He told me there would be no charge to repair it and I could pick it up later that day. When I did come back, the repaired denture still didn't fit well, which I still attribute to the original impressions not done properly. I later also noticed that the tooth that they had replaced, did not match the other teeth. Feeling that the tooth had broken so easily, I had asked the office if there was any guarantee on the denture. Never got an answer. I felt like the guy in the commercial, asking at a dental office, "Is there any guarantee on my dentures?" They just laughed at him. That night I went online to the Great Expressions website and emailed one question to customer service asking the same question "Is there any guarantee on dentures?" Still did not get an answer from customer service. I went in for my next appointment and after not getting any answer from customer service, I was hoping they would try and help me. I was wrong again. Dr. Smith put me in a room way in the back where I had never been before and soon as I sat down and her not asking how she could help me, she laced into me accusing me of calling corporate, complaining about her and being ungrateful to her for her saving me money. I never asked her to save me money and I had explained that I had only asked if there was any guarantee on the denture. She didn't want to listen to me, so I gave up and didn't want to argue with her any more. She then told me, as she would tell one of her children, "Look at me when I talk to you". I told her to calm down. I have never been spoken to like that by any doctor or anyone before. I was so upset and angry at her attitude, I was shaking. She left the room and her assistant made another adjustment and a soft liner which has a point that is cutting into my upper lip. I never saw Dr. Smith again. I kept telling everyone I wanted a new denture, not another adjustment or soft liner. I was told another denture would cost me another $825.00 on top of the over $1,400.00 I had already spent. Would I ever recommend Great Expressions or Dr. Smith to anyone? Absolutely not. Do your homework first. read more

After getting names of 6 participating dentists at this office from my insurance company, Humana, I called to schedule a new appt. This woman told me the dentist of my choice, Dr. Shumate, was not taking new patients. I asked who was available and she gave me names of 2 female dentists, who weren't even on Humana's list (probably new and just out of dental school since she told me they were young. I then asked about the other 5 dentists by name on Humana's records and she said "NO, NO, NO, NO AND NO! I TOLD YOU WHO IS AVAILABLE!" I simply told her based on her attitude, I wouldn't be a new patient at that office. She said, "Fine. Have a nice day!" I'm sure if the owner knew how their phone personnel talk to prospective patients and how much business they potentially lose, they would put someone professional and congenial on the phones. I am a 40-year resident of Stuart and know how important "word of mouth" is to the community and I will be repeating this incident. I have been going to great expressions for a few years now. I faithfully do everything by the book for my dental health. But it's not enough, every time I go I always have to pay over and above what my insurance cover for routine cleaning. They always say I need extra this or extra that. And mind you the cleaning always seems the same no extra added. Needless to say I am going elsewhere. Last visit that my husband had they said there was a problem with our insurance and he paid out of pocket. Then I check with my insurance and they had sent in 800.00 which was the max. I then call Great Expresions and questioned if they received payment they said yes and that we now had a credit. It's been 6 months now and my husband went in for yet another routine cleaning and they charged him 54.00. When I questioned the office no one could explain where was the credit.
