I was looking to purchase a new kayak recently, and visited a number of stores. I had the best retail experience I have had in years in Great Outdoor Provision Co. I was in a few times, looking at the many different models they have on the floor. Each time I was there, someone was there to help me, answer questions, etc. I ended up with a great kayak they even helped me load up. It was such a great experience, I went back and bought a new trailer. Looking for some winter wear for an upcoming trip to Northern Europe, I stopped in to browse and see what these things are costing these days. Well, it's a little shocking. Prices are high but the product definitely looks to be excellent quality. Outdoor wear, camping wear, tents, sleeping bags, camping equipment, kayaks and more. Bottom Line: Casual, quality performance clothing for loungers and hikers alike. Gear too. On a cold December day the cozy window displays of Great Outdoor Provision Co. drew my friend and I inside. As the name implies, they have clothing and gear for those who like outdoor adventures like camping, hiking and kayaking. While I'm not very outdoorsy I do appreciate quality clothing and Great Outdoor Provision Co. has lots of it! The store was nicely organized and stocked and the creakiness of the hardwood floors was quite charming. Great Outdoor Provision Co. is local to Virginia and North Carolina and reminds me of REI, Duluth Trading and Mast General Store. Neither of us had ever shopped at Great Outdoor Provision Co. so we roamed much of the store. In the end we both left with lots of socks. They carry Smartwool, Darn Tough, Farm to Feet and probably some other brands. While I'm a fairly recent convert from Smartwool to Darn Tough I must say that I'm loving the Farm to Feet athletic socks! And for what it's worth, we both bough Farm to Feet socks after one of the employees volunteered some product information about the brand. And we've both ordered more since our inaugural trip to the store last weekend. read more

I wandered in with a few friends to check out kayaks. Collectively us three had very little knowledge going into Great Outdoor Provision. We were met by Peyton, a warm and inviting employee. Peyton went out of his way in delightfully and thoroughly explaining the different attributes of various kayaks. I truly feel that he helped us become informed buyers. We did not plan on buying a kayak today. I'm sure he must of picked up on that at some point but he continued to help us with information. I do plan to buy a kayak in the near future and I will go to Great Outdoor Provision to do it. I highly recommend this store for any outdoor equipment needs. read more

Sometimes I think the sales clerks are cloying. And they never stock enough larger sizes. But love the range of clothes. I think all outdoor activity stores have a weird double life as a sales venue for those of us who do and those of us who look like they WANT to do extremely athletic things. I think the shoe selection is shrinking a bit. And the variety of cool looking casual clothes seems to reflect the conservative economy. It seems as though they buy just a few things these days and leave the skinny girls with most of the choice as there are always a plethora of 6's and 8's but not much for us bigger athletic types. There is a good selection of hiking and camping stuff, especially food and camping utensils. read more

Sheesh, am I the world's biggest cheapskate?! This is a great store for outdoorsy folks needing provisions, but at these prices? No way! I saw some cute day bags which would have been great on my overseas trips to hold my passport, money, phone, etc. but not at $46. It wasn't THAT cool. The Swiss Army bag I had -- for less -- did the job just fine. This store has kayaks, men's and women's outdoor clothing, hats, rain jackets, and so on. If you have the money, knock yourself out. I came here when I was trying to find a North Face Fleece that no one else in the area carried, and luckily, Great Outdoor Provision had it for me. When I was there, I ended up staying for hours looking at all of the cool equipment they had for camping as well. The staff here helped with everything, even answering obscure questions for a clueless camper like myself. The selection is HUGE, so come prepared to look around. read more

Hands down the best outdoor clothing and gear store in the Triangle. Great selection and their regular prices ARE in line with everybody else, but they seem to have way better sales than most. Also, the gift wrapping during the holidays is great. The staff is engaging and will not only answer all your questions about gear, but they will point you in the right direction for camping, hiking and paddling. I don't understand the poor reviews, sorry they aren't eBay or the mall. I stop by once every month or so to see the new seasonal stuff and check out the sales. Very relaxing to be there. I once bought trail running shoes at their other location and they had a manufacture's defect. I wore them in an mentioned the tear in passing. They told me that Salomon had a poor design and I walked out with new Vasques! No receipt was no problemo. Customer for life! read more

I will begin with the positves. Store has a premium location in Cameron Village adequate parking. The store itself is well stocked and varied in terms of inventory. I saw Columbia, Patagonia, North Face (kinda light), and Costa to name a few. I also appreciate their buy local think global commitment. Unfortunately, all the positives were quickly extinguished by one of the Staff members.(Neglected to get his name, My bad) At the least his attitude was indifferent, at the most insolent. He totally soured my shopping experience. I hope he isnt there if and when I return. Also, their prices are borderline pricey. read more

I am just getting around to reviewing this store but I LOVE THIS STORE. They have such a good spread of clothing especially if you are outdoorsy like me! But they also have a lot of nicer options like Patagonia that you could wear out. The products they care are really cool camping/adventure gadgets. I could spend hours in this place. If you are looking for a place to buy roof-top kayak gear this is the place for you. I needed to get new kayak mounting for my car and found this to be the best place around. They spend loads of time with me explaining all the different type of equipment and helped me through the process. The best part was they installed it all for me. Hands down this is was superior customer service and I would highly recommend to any new kayaking folks around. read more

I only made it inside about 10 steps before the creaky boards drove me insane. Everywhere, any foot step, a stomp and a creak. And my version of hell would be having to work there for a day or more. Wish I could give a better review, but recalled that I'd tried to shop here about a year ago and was forced out for the same reason. I was here checking out backpacks for an upcoming trip to Europe. I talked with a saleswoman who was very, very helpful and walked me through the different options. This was all basically new to me, so she was SUPER helpful. I tried on some backpacks and she adjusted them to my size to get the right fit for me. The backpacks were all pricey, but that's just a function of this type of item being pricey. They had a good selection and it seemed like the salespeople here are very helpful. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this store. They have a good selection - not as vast as an REI, but still a nice selection. I also found the prices were reasonable. For the most part, the prices are the standard prices set by the manufacturers, so they're comparable to many similar stores offering the same goods. Which makes me wonder why people are raising concerns over the prices. I also found the sales associates to be very friendly and courteous. read more

One day I came tottering in wearing a pair of heels, desperate for relief as I had a full day of trotting around before my day ended. Made a beeline for the Keen's and grabbed a pair off the shelf and stood there for at least five minutes, while, at a minimum 3 sales associates walked past me and in one case, looked directly at me. I finally had to go into the back of the store to retrieve a begrudging attendant to get me my size. They have a nice selection of sports apparel and gear, kind of like a mini-REI, but I have to say the service was a strikeout. Prices seemed in line with other stores of this type. read more

I just wanted to take the time tell everyone what absolutely wonderful staff work at the Raleigh location. Specifically, Adam and Dan really REALLY helped me out. I came over to Great Outdoor Provision Co. in need of some desperate help before moving across the country. I had my whole one-bedroom apartment fit into and on top of my little Subaru forester. I ran into some trouble when I realized I did not have straps for my soft car carrier and went over to Great Outdoor Provision co. straight away. Adam and Dan were so so so incredibly helpful and kind. They got me straps that worked perfectly to hold the carrier on top of my car, AND strapped them on for me. Again, this place is only alright. Their fly fishing shop is bigger than the chapel hill one, but their stuff is super expensive. The employees are normally quite helpful and nice, but the stores usually seem a bit understaffed. I wouldn't go here if it wasn't for the fly fishing stuff. read more
