REI currently has a large sale going on that ends Monday this is their black Friday sale cause they don't have a black Friday sale because they are not open on that day. It's called the GUGO sale and there is a 20% off coupon for members for one full Price item and a 20% off coupon for one item on their outlet which you can find online. Since it is a busy sale a lot of things might be out of stock however clothes tend not to be out of stock. At this particular location they have a very nice garage sale section which is in the front right which are things you can buy that are used but are discounted and I usually find something really nice in this section. The bathrooms are clean and you can get to them very easily. They offer a class this year for backpacking and enjoy the camping. The line for checking out always goes very smoothly. The staff have always been nice and helpful. read more

I was looking for a pack for multi day trips. The Cary location is larger than the North Hills location. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I had it narrowed down to 3 packs. And Andrew ( the person assisting me) was a wealth of knowledge. He filled the pack to about 20 pounds and I tried it on and walked around the store to get a feel for comfort and fit. He did this for all three packs I was considering. I was starting to feel bad for what seemed like I was monopolizing his time. I did end up buying one there. A great experience at REI and will continue to shop there in the future. They do have online store and curbside pick up, but I prefer to get the product in my hand before making a large investment purchase like some of the gear is. Happy trails!!!!! read more

No more dogs. We've been going to this REI with our dog for almost 10 years now, and he's always been welcome. In fact, we were there 2 days ago, and they were glad to see him. Today, we were told service animals only, and we were not allowed in. That's the last time I will be shopping with REI and will find other places nearby and online for my outdoor gear needs. Great Outdoor Provision Company in the Village District (aka. Cameron Village) was more than happy to greet our pup with a treat just yesterday, so I would suggest them as an alternative. 4/5 - a lovely store full of outdoor gear selection with friendly/helpful staff. Enjoyed a trip to REI today for their annual "Garage Sale" gear consignment event. Didn't arrive early enough so missed the good deals but still had fun looking around. Spent a good hour and a half loooking around. Lots of items marked down/discounted across the store. Also lots of selection. I occasionally price-matched an item on amazon if I was interested in something and their prices were often fairly close to the online price Customer service was excellent. Plenty of very friendly and helpful staff walking around checking to see if they can assist. Store, bathroom, etc were clean and well kept, as well. FYI - if you are unaware, REI has a member pay back program where you receive an annual refund of 10% on your REI purchases. A nice benefit of shopping at REI and I think helps keep their prices competitive. They also have an excellent website full of selection and deals...but I personally like touching and feeling the products. Good tip to remember, the store is a good way to return an item you bought online. Finally, I confirmed that REI doesn't price match, either with other stores and/or online. They explained they already competitively price items and offer members the 10% rebate on purchases. Fair enough. read more

They tell you, buy it, take it home, try it out, if you don't like it, bring it back. I mean they really stand behind everything they sell. I know that if I had an extra wad of cash on hand I could easily find cool stuff to get here. Join and become a lifetime member for $20 and receive 10% back in dividends each year. Their return policy used to be unlimited, but recently they have lowered it to 365 days because many people were using items and then just returning them to get something new without reason. I've been to some other locations and they seem to be remodeling all of them to follow this same format. Hubby, an avid hobby cyclist, bought a bike for me online. It was on sale and at a great price point for all the features. According to the product description, the right size for my height. Supposedly. We went in to pick up the bike. I am 5'5", but have legs about as long as my 8 year old's - certain people in my family call me "wienie dog". It was a unisex small, but way too tall for my stumpy little legs. And that was the smallest unisex bikes came. They stumped online for a women's small bike, which wouldn't be that hard to find. Except they were all like $150-$200 more expensive. To get to the point, while we had several people help us out, one in particular whose name I think was Eric, spent a good 5-10 minutes searching their super special secret REI places on the interwebz and found one on sale at a very good price. Then proceeded to give us a Friends/Family discount of 15%. And then went to the trouble to fit me on other women's in the stores to make sure he ordered the correct size. Eric asked where I planned to ride to make sure he got me the right type and gave us a lot of advice on what features we didn't need and therefore didn't need to spend money on. In the end, the bike was less expensive than the one we initially bought for me. The rest of their service was great as well when we tried on helmets. One of the women working used to coach a cycling team, so her help in fitting our son properly was definitely valuable. read more

Nice store. It is not one of their flagship stores, and I guess I am spoiled from living so close to the one in DC and Bethesda, MD. But still a great store. Employees were helpful, without being hounding. There's just so many toys to play with. Prices are normal for an REI (which are typically more expensive but you do get what you pay for). We absolutely love rei(spend WAY too much money in there) and have been to many of them in several states. This one however really needs to be more particular about who they hire. Yesterday we had the worst experience we've ever had due to an employee that other employees say is new and has done what he did to us to other people. They think his name is Ray but I'm unsure. Basically we went in to buy a sawyer squeeze, look at new trekking poles, and get a new sleeping bag. We moved here a few months ago from CA where hiking and the outdoors is very popular and people are knowledgeable. We are very experienced hikers/campers/outdoors people and knew exactly what we wanted. This employee while we were looking at poles insisted "you definitely want cork handles" when I never asked for his help or opinion. Then we go over to the bags and I KNOW I want a 30 degree bag since I'm a very hot sleeper but he INSISTS I need a 20 and I can just unzip it if I get too hot. Again I never even asked for his help or opinion. He was rude as hell when he kept asking "well what are you trying to do, where will you be camping" etc. Typically you camp and backpack in several areas so that was stupid to begin with. His approach is just very arrogant and rude. He's of course trying to sell me a bag $100 more than the one I want. I clearly knew what I was looking for and wanted so why argue with a customer?! What really got me was he was helping a guy next to me who had a particular budget for a sleeping bag and this employee literally said "you can't do it, it's impossible, you have to up your budget or I can't really help you". I was literally looking at 2 bags that were in the guys price range. This employee is going to get a customer who is new to outdoor activities and maybe wants to try hiking or backpacking for the first time, will recommend the wrong equipment, and then the customer will have a bad experience and think they hate the activity. This guy had a shit attitude too! He was short with people, irritable, and acted as a used car salesman. I was sick of dealing with him so we walked out without buying a new bag!! I won't return here anytime soon. When you have an experienced customer, just get then what they want! This location doesn't disappoint. I visited two weekends ago to have campus pedals put on my mountain bike, and spend some gift card money on 1) SPD-compatible bike shoes and 2) bike gloves. It was a complete success. I found a store associate (we'll call him Trevor) who listened to what I needed, pulled several pairs of shoes for me to try on, installed the pedals (which I had acquired elsewhere) for free, offered personal advice on the shoes (he rides a lot), and put the SPD cleats on my shoes so I could spend the next 15 minutes test-riding with the clips in the parking lot. The variety of shoes and gloves meant I could spend exactly my budget without being pressured to buy the most expensive brands/models. One of the best REI experiences I've had. I live in the Fort Bragg area and wasn't sure which REI to go to. Initial reviews were very similar in terms of customer service, but size and selection was something the Cary Rei seemed to have a leg up on. I have not been to the other REIs but I honestly don't think there is a need. The staff were so knowledgeable and genuinely friendly. I felt so happy to be a customer. There was a sale item I couldn't find in my size. I asked a representative and they found local stores who has my size, and has the item shipped to my house for free. I received the item just a few days after. Again, I am so happy with my REI experience that I can't wait to go back! read more

I just took a free bike commuting class. They gave out great tips, free water bottles, maps and sunscreen. This is a great deal. I met like minded people and friendly staff. I also learned bike laws that most people don't know nor take the time to know(it's amazing how few people actually know how to ride out in the community). The Cary store is big and loaded with all the outdoor essentials and then some. They have a great selection of outdoor gear so it satisfies any gear junkies craving. The staff is knowledgeable about their department and they will not give you a wrong answer(meaning they will ask if they don't know the answer). If you do not know about a product they will not make you feel incompetent. I did The store is clean and organized. There are dressing rooms and the bathrooms are clean. I did not give a 5 because like most outdoor stores there is a huge markup on their products. However the REI line is well worth the money. read more

THIS REI gets 1 star. We started at the REI at North Hills to exchange some hiking boots my boyfriend got me for my birthday and they were so helpful, but sent us to this store because I needed shoes in wide. We got back to the shoe section and they were very understaffed for the number of clients and not very helpful. We would have walked out if we weren't on a mission. A girl finally grabbed a few sizes for us, but she didn't help with the fitting process at all (the woman at North Hills helping us was SOOO helpful). Shortly later she vanished without a word (she was later at checkout) and there were two staff for a dozen or so people. After waiting and waiting for more help, I asked one of the sales associate if she could call more help and she snapped that they had. Finally, more (two more) people showed up and the guys who came back were very helpful, got me all the sizes I needed, and even smiled! (whoa! right?!) There was also some confusion about my exchange at check-out. My only positive experience was the guy who got called back to shoes, I think his name was Victor, was extremely pleasant. 5 stars for Victor, but unfortunately I can only give this store 1 star because of the poor communication from the sales associate who left us hanging, the one who snapped, and the lack of staffing (the North Hills location was equally busy). read more

If you've not been to REI you're denying yourself a rare treat. Even if you're not an outdoorsperson, go. The first time we went in we were there over two hours. They have the best, nicest, most helpful employees I have ever encountered. They will let you put up every tent in the joint. Try on all the socks. Get out each kayak. Ride a bike around in the store. They want you to get outside and have fun. And, if for some crazy reason they don't have what you need, and they know who does, they will tell you where to go find it. Yay them! They are a membership based thing. For $20 a year you get 10% off all purchases and a bunch of other discounts thru the year... but you can opt not to join and still shop there too. We actually have three locations near Raleigh... which is great. Places like Richmond Va have none. read more

The worst customer service I have ever dealt with. The young man who helped me in the store was amazing! Attentive and helpful with what I needed to find. When I went to check out at the register the lady at the cashier failed to tell me the membership was $20, when I said I wanted to opt out and finish the transaction without a membership, as well as I was in a rush before class, she was disrespectful, also made rude comments about my college after noticing my class ring. I was honestly shocked with how terrible she acted after I politely said I just wanted to cancel and check out. Will honestly probably never return due to the fact she was so rude. Only complaint i have and reason for 3 star rating is because of garage sales, i have been to 2 of the last garage sales and i can say it was a huge disappointment enough to convince me to stop being a customer at REI, i would NEVER recommend to anyone to waste your time going to one of these garage sales, REI needs to seriously look at this policy and make changes. read more

My spouse and I bought a Thule bike rack and Keith helped us install on our car. He went above and beyond by going out to our car and putting it on the hitch, teaching us during the process and explaining how the mechanics of the rack worked in general. I have high expectations for REI because it is so consistently outstanding, but this was above my expectations. He also recommended that we buy the locking bolt, which I was unaware of. I thought that was wise. Thanks Keith! I chose the Cary store because when I checked into it this location had the most racks from which to choose. I have lived in the Cary/Apex area for almost 7 years and yesterday was the first time that I went in REI. My husband wanted a pair of VI BRAM 5 FINGERS and Omega (across the street) had a limited number of styles and sizes. While my husband tried on shoes I had a chance to look around the store. They seemed to have a large collection of running apparel, hiking goods, and more. I was particularly interested in the running apparel because I am on a search for a nice running skirt. There were a lot of sales going on and the prices seemed decent, but I didn't buy anything from them. On the other hand the store is nice and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. read more
