I went to Smiles of Eastlake for a comprehensive exam and cleaning. After reviewing my X-rays, I…read morewas told I had a couple of cavities and that some of my old fillings should be replaced. I trusted their professional judgment and agreed to the recommended treatment. During the procedure, the numbing injection was incredibly painful. I've had fillings before, so I knew this didn't feel normal. I remember thinking maybe they just used a different technique, so I trusted the process and didn't question it. Looking back, I wish I had advocated for myself. Ever since that filling was completed, that tooth has been in pain. I lived with that pain for the next 2-3 months, hoping it would eventually go away. Instead, I pushed it to the back of my mind and convinced myself it would get better. When I finally flew back to the D.C. area, I went to the dentist I've trusted for the past 10 years. He took new X-rays of the painful tooth and diagnosed me with pulpitis, an inflammation of the dental pulp. He also showed me that the new filling extended beyond the previous filling. He expressed concern about whether that additional drilling was necessary. He couldn't say for certain that it wasn't, but the look on his face and our conversation were concerning to me. I'm not accusing anyone of wrongdoing. I'm simply sharing the facts. During my comprehensive exam and X-rays at Smiles of Eastlake, there was no indication of inflammation in that tooth. After the filling was done, I developed constant pain in that same tooth and was later diagnosed with pulpitis by another dentist. My biggest issue with Smiles of Eastlake was that the office felt rushed and impersonal. It felt more like a high-volume practice than one focused on individualized patient care. Once my trust was broken, I wasn't comfortable returning. This review is really about two things. First, if you choose Smiles of Eastlake, proceed with caution. Ask questions, advocate for yourself, and don't be afraid to get a second opinion if something doesn't feel right. Second, listen to your body. I ignored persistent pain for 2-3 months because I assumed it would get better. It didn't. Whether this outcome could have been prevented, I don't know, but I do know that ignoring my symptoms wasn't the right decision. I hope my experience encourages someone else to trust their instincts and seek care sooner.

10s across the board for Otay Lakes Dental Care (OLDC)!…read more I had an exceptional experience at OLDC! The entire staff was amazing from Amy at the front, Alania the dental hygenist, and Dr. Cavan. Location: across from SWC, in the same plaza at the Dollar Tree. Behind the Jack In the Box Setting an appointment was easy via phone with Amy. They are a smaller practice with one doctor, so the schedule is tight. I wasn't too concerned about the wait time to be seen however. Upon arrival, I was greeted with Amy's bright smile and great personality. First timers, give yourself those 15 minutes to fill out the paperwork. I used the restroom which was very clean and smelled lovely. Alania promptly retrieved me from the waiting area and was kind with explaining everything we were doing. Xrays, photos, and cleaning. Once she was done, Dr. Cavan came right on in and had already said she took a look at my xrays and photos. She could tell immediately some of my issues and promptly examined my teeth and came up with an oral care plan. When the exam was finished, I felt very confident that I knew what I needed and Amy met me at the checkout counter with the Oral care plan, costs, and thoroughly explained everything to me. I'm now scheduled to return with a clear understanding of what we will be doing, how, when, and the cost. I love smaller offices because the care & attention received is invaluable. This will be the office my parter gets oral care from as well. I'm glad to have found this jewel located in the Otay Lakes area. Give them a try!

She tells me that I'm putting them in a bind (whatever that means) and that she would "allow" me to reschedule this one time and that if it happened again they wouldn't be able to see me until Months from now. If the front desk is like this I can only imagine the rest of the experience. No thank you. I'll take my chances elsewhere. Would not recommend. Update: The doctor of the office reached out to me and apologized on behalf of her staff which seemed sincere and was greatly appreciated.

We are happy to pay for good service. I'm writing this because trust, integrity, respect for…read morepatients, and basic safety judgment clearly do not matter here. There was no regard for our time, no consideration for our family situation, and no sense that anyone was looking out for long-term oral health. We made it clear we only had a babysitter until 5 PM, yet we were pressured to proceed immediately with additional services rather than being offered flexible scheduling and ended not leaving till 6 PM. That is not patient-centered care; that is poor planning and poor respect. What scared me most was the lack of safety judgment. My husband arrived on a motorcycle, yet they still gave him nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Even if some guidelines say you can drive after waiting, this shows a complete lack of practical caution: you're putting someone who just drove a motorcycle, and may be operating heavy machinery afterward, back on the road under the influence of a sedative. That is irresponsible. My husband has Long Covid. Nitrous oxide inactivates Vitamin B12, damages the myelin sheath, and can worsen neurological symptoms, fatigue, and oxygen depletion in people with Long Covid. This is not minor. They gave it to him anyway as if patient safety is secondary to convenience and profit. While waiting, I witnessed a patient who was already physically in the office have their appointment canceled so they could accommodate another patient who agreed to a more expensive procedure. That single moment made it undeniable: they do not value time over profit. By the time we left, we had paid $1,241.80 for two cleanings, two X-rays, two exams, nitrous, and an onlay, even with insurance. The experience left me feeling like they count on patients not knowing enough about dentistry or health to question what is being recommended or why. As someone who works in healthcare, it was especially disappointing to see how easily trust can be traded away for financial gain. I left feeling misled, disrespected, and embarrassed that I didn't recognize it sooner. If you care about your oral health, your family, or having a healthcare provider you can actually trust, do not waste your valuable time or hard-earned money here.

The initial exam was efficient and clear, the cleaning was also great. I have a fear of the dentist and of needles in general, but the team there was patient, efficient, explained enough to put me at ease, and checked in with me regularly. I really appreciate the approach to care they took. The only reason for 4 vs. 5 stars is that it does seem like they are training a new front desk personnel (which will help in the long run!) but does seem to create a short backup in the front and require some reconfirmation of care with the team and me a few times before finalizing the next appointments. The team (including all the front desk team members) are really patient and helpful though!

Overall, my cleaning experience here was great until they tried to charge me and my husband almost $1000 per tooth for ceramic onlays since they said fillings were no longer standard practice. Luckily my masters roommate at UCSF had just finished dental school (best in the country) so I asked her and the dentist at family first dentistry and they couldn't believe that they had told me fillings weren't standard of practice anymore. It just makes me sad and angry that they are taking advantage of people like this

The low score is for the inconsistencies in who you get to care for you, and the poor quality of work. When I first went here I was advised thay I should replace two older metal fillings that I had done many years ago. I was reluctant because they were not bothering me and felt great, but decided to go through and get the newer fillings done. Schedule with the doc and come in on appointment day. Was told they would only do one filling that day and not two. Not sure why, but okay. Filling done and scheduled for second filling. Show up and told that another doctor will be doing the filling. Not over thrilled with having multiple doctors as they each have their own way of doing things. Second filling done and its poor quality work. Sharp edge left, and not properly grinded down for bite. Cant feel that though since my mouth is numb. Had to reschedule to have that fixed. Went back in months later for a cleaning and again have a different doctor who does my care. I prefer to have the same doctor all the time, but having a different doctor each visit left me disappointed. To make matters worse, I write this a couple years after getting the fillings. The filling from the second doctor cracked and pieces broke off while eating. Went to a different dentists office who fixed the cracked filling and made mention that the other filling which wad done here was done poorly and re-filled that knew. No problems with that procedure at all.
