I'm really grateful to Dr. Quan Liu, DDS, DMD for taking care of my tooth. I was quite nervous before the treatment, but Dr. Liu was very patient and took the time to explain everything clearly. He walked me through the procedure step by step and often checked in to make sure I was doing okay, which made me feel much more relaxed. What impressed me most was how calm, careful, and responsible he was during the whole process. You can tell he truly cares about his patients and wants to do the best possible job. The staff in the office were also very friendly and helpful, and they explained the aftercare instructions clearly. I am writing this review to share my worst experience ever with others that have had similar or different bad experiences with this Dental office. To all new patients that are looking to choose Otay Lakes Dental Group for Dental Care. This bad review is regarding Dr. Quan Alex Lui. I have been a patient at this office for more than 10+ years. During that time, I had no ongoing conflicts, no unresolved issues, and i was never informed that I was considered a problematic patient. On June 17, 2026 I went to the office for a scheduled dental cleaning appointment. I checked in at the front desk and was treated respectfully and professionally. I was then taken in to take x-rays and moved to another area where a dental assistant polished my teeth. After that , I was asked to wait for Dr. Lui to complete my teeth cleaning. I waited for approximately one hour without complaining. After that wait, Dr. Lui approached me abruptly, rudely, and disrespectfully and told me that he refused to provide treatment , that I was a bad patient, and that he did not want to see me ever again. He said this was because of my past complaints about the quality of teeth cleaning not meeting my expectations. I calmly explained that this involved a single incident approximately 3 years ago, when I believed a prior cleaning had not been performed properly. At that time, I had requested that my teeth be cleaned again because they still felt dirty afterward, The office honored my request, the matter was resolved, and I was really satisfied. In fact, Dr. Lui personally re-cleaned my teeth at that time. After that incident , I returned for additional visits and specifically requested that Dr. Lui perform future teeth cleanings. I was never informed that there were concerns about my behavior, character, or patient status. This incident was especially upsetting because my 8 year old granddaughter witnessed the interaction. She became frightened, distressed and concerned by the way I was spoken to and asked why I was being treated so rudely and aggressively. My granddaughter texted her father to informed him that Grandma was just kicked out of a dental office, my son Jorge Martinez my granddaughters father became very concern by text sent to him. Mr. Martinez called me on my cell phone in the middle of my conversation with Dr. I expressed to Dr. Lui how I didn't appreciate in the way he was handling unresolved issue based on a past incident, and the way I was being spoken to in a very disrespectful and humiliating way. I felt like I waisted my time and I couldn't believe he was refusing services to finish my teeth cleaning in the middle of treatment. Dr. Lui didn't care or display any remorse or compassion to listen or understand me to look for better way to resolve the problem or misunderstanding. Dr.Lui walked away, another staff employee had heard the conversation. I explained the truth of what had happened, but instead of trying to resolve the situation. I was told that Dr. Lui was the boss and that what he said was final. Mrs. Gretchen then asked me to please leave, escorted me out, and told me that the office no longer accepted my PPO insurance. Afterwards I checked the office website and it clearly stated that my PPO was accepted. This left a concerned that I was being treated unfairly and possibly given inaccurate information while being removed from this office. read more

Dr Quan Alex Liu and Dr Liu recently responded back by saying that all is good with the board and Dr Liu is complying with the state board and following the updates-read below from previous review. If you see some of reviews are from employees and also, he is getting bad reviews on Google and Yelp. When is this malpractice going to stop? 1st, none of several cavities were removed, bridge made of 3 teeth were placed on a decade tooth, which keeps coming off exposing an open womb. I don't really give bad reviews to start with. I'm very compassionate. Me and my kiddos have been going here for 3 years since we moved to San diego (military family) They used to be good and caring! But today's visit is just a very "what the hell is this" moment. They did cleaning for me and my kiddos and I tell you that cleaning is like what my 4th grade daughter can do! I know the insurance pays for it! BUT DANG! MY MOUTH STILL FEELS DIRTY AFTER! It's probably a good 8mins and he's done!!!!!!! I feel rushed!!!!!! The lady hygienist did a great job cleaning my teeth back then. Thats why we kept coming. She was thorough and my teeth feel super clean after! But she is not there anymore. Picture this in ur head! U waited so long for this cleaning appointment to confidently smile again, to get that feeling of super sparkly clean teeth. BUT THIS IS WHAT YOU GET! I was recommended Lava material instead of ceramic for a procedure but was told that my PPO insurance didn't cover it. I went with their recommendation and paid in full. When I recieved my insurance statement they reported they used ceramic instead of the Lava. I filed a grievance with my insurance and after my insurance made them do a new procedure report reflecting the Lava material, my insurance informed this dentist's office overcharged me $750. I was refunded the overcharge but what a sour experience this was...never going back. read more

It was my husbands first appointment yesterday at this office and we simply won't be going back. My husband was DISCRIMINATED at his visit. The translator( office manager ) had the audacity to ask why he doesn't go get checked in Mexico if it's because he doesn't have papers, as she went to go make copies she asked if he had to go because ICE was on their way. We are both insured here there is no need to go down to Mexico. That is racial discrimination, just because he needed a translator does not mean he was not born in the USA. As an office manager or human being in general that is unacceptable . No family should have to experience this, we all have rights and we should all be respected. I will be speaking to someone higher up to address this issue. I will not allow this humiliation to happen to anyone else. read more

Rip off. They will " highly recommend" procedures that you don't even need. The doctor won't even sit with you and explain why these "procedures" need to be done. I picked this place because it's close to home and it's down the street from a couple shopping centers. A little hidden but it's next to LA Fitness on Otay Lakes Road. LOTS OF PARKING for sure. People at the reception desk are super nice. Very social people. Dr. Liu did my deep cleaning a few weeks ago. He's super nice and very informative as he's cleaning teeth. Such a nice guy. Nancy did my follow-up cleaning today. Her hands are so gentle. No slips or anything. She's so nice too. JUST EVERYONE IS NICE AND INFORMATIVE. Cliff did my polish. He's also so very nice. Update 2/7/2018: Approximately six months ago, I was scheduled for my six-month checkup, but the day before, I had not received a call from the office as I usually do. I had decided I would see how the next appointment went before making my final decision. So, I called the office to confirm my appointment, but they were out that day. I left a message as the voicemail greeting requested, specifying that I had a checkup scheduled on my calendar for the next day but had not received a call, along with my name and number, etc., but I did not receive a call back. I took it that Otay Lakes Dental Group preferred not to see me any further after having read my review, so I didn't bother calling back after I didn't hear from them. In reply to Dr Liu's comment, it's true that my only problem is with the FMD. At my most recent visit, I did attempt to refuse the FMD, yet you continued to push back after I said multiple times I did not want to do that. You explained your reasoning at the time, which frankly I did not and still do not believe. Finally you were willing to "compromise" by allowing me to visit every 3 months instead. My sister is married to a dentist, who stands with me in saying that both the FMD and 3-month cleanings are overkill and unnecessary when the patient is brushing and flossing regularly. read more

I have been coming to this location with Dr. Liu and his staff since about 2015, plus or minus a year. The staff is so respectful and very prompt with your problems and how to address them. They are extremely caring and knowledgeable about your teeth and provide great ways to take care of them. Moreover, they offer great advice as a result of their knowledge that is usually in the form of at-home remedies and procedures to how to brush more properly or floss with greater efficiency. Dr. Liu explains his procedures and why he is conducting them as well and he is very careful and strategic especially during more painful procedures. Lastly, I want to become a doctor and Dr. Liu and his staff always encourage me to continue reaching for that goal which displays great compassion for patients and great empathy overall =) read more

To write this review after 6 years of visiting this place, well is it really worth it to comment? Yes... it's never too late.. I visited this dentist almost 7 years ago since I was overdue for a checkup and cleaning and I found their coupon in a local neighborhood ad. Initial exam was hurried, the cleaning that was included in the price was half ass job. But the worst thing was that they tried to take me for almost $2000 worth of unnecessary work.. I mean cavities, deep cleaning, etc. I haven't seen my regular dentist in awhile so I almost accepted their evaluation but I decided not to since I didn't feel anything wrong or uncomfortable w my teeth. I recently went to another dentist and guess what, there are no cavities and no deep cleaning necessary. Just normal cleaning and I'm due back for a follow up in 6 months. So.. this leads me to believe either this dentist and the staff are incompetent or tried a quick one on me.. I wonder how many other patients they've done this to and how many have actually paid unneccessary money for unnecessary treatments. We never second guess doctors or dentists, it's not like mechanics or general contractors that an average person gets multiple quotes for services, this is a Dentist!!! Jesus Christ they suck. I went off by Yelp reviews. Went in with pain in my tooth and as an emergency pain appointment , the dr had no clue how to work the computer. The x ray he did took him forever to find what was going on. , he literally didn't even inspected my mouth or nothing. All he said was let's send you to a specialist and give you antibiotics, so I was like ok. I got sent to a root canal specialist for the SAME X-RAY ! Same one ! I got charged at this dr then I got charged at root canal specialist for the EXACT same x ray that showed no root canal needed. They put me in antibiotics without even checking if there was an infection. The root canal specialist sends me back to this dr I call to ask and they literally have no clue on what they're doing like at all. They try to charge me for a crown When I told her I did not needed a root canal and no root canal was done. Then she tried to offer me cleaning and other services ! Super frustrating, stay away. I have found my new dentist, and he's great!!! Upon calling to make an appointment, the woman on the other end of the line was super friendly and was able to get me in without any hassles. I told her I wanted the first available morning, and was able to get in when I needed. The office is inside the old University of Phoenix building by LA Fitness on Otay Lakes Rd. It's small, but clean and warm. The dental assistant that took me back first was really nice. He made sure I was comfortable and always asked if I was okay. I was just going in for my annual checkup, but felt like as if I had been a patient there for years!! Dr. Alex Liu explained to me what he was going to do before he did it. I needed to replace an old filling that had fallen out. Dr. Liu filled and fixed it within literally 10 minutes and made sure that when I bit down, it wasn't bothering me. He did offer me a deep cleaning, but instead of trying to upcharge me or guilt me into getting it, he recommend I check with my insurance first. He even offered to see the price with other dental insurances in case I wanted to insurance shop. The dental hygienist that did the regular cleaning on my teeth came after Dr. Liu. I had to agree to remove my negative, but accurate, review from last year in order to get money returned to me that shouldn't have been charged. Yelp says 3 stars is A Okay, so thats what this dentist gets. Pros: Clean office. Nice staff. Appointments quickly, they will always work you in. Dr has a good injection technique. Cons: 5 chairs can be full of patients waiting and it's just one dentist. Regardless of your appointment time you will lay in the chair while the dentist is doing a root canal, or something else on another patient. Questionable billing practices. You have to go to the lab in Mira Mesa to have your crowns color matched. If they don't get it right, you may have to take time and make 3 or more trips to the lab. Beware. read more
