First time trying this place. Unfortunately, food is bland and greasy. Lo mein has little flavor and is quite oily. I asked for my chicken and snow peas to be spicy but it was very bland. Hot and sour soup is decent. Steamed dumplings are good. I won't order from here again. read more

8/11/23: Ordered the Beef Szechuan. It was okay. Meat portion was generous and tender. Not a lot of veggies. Sauce was a tomato ketchup type of sauce. This Chinese stir fry is suppose to have buttery tender beef enveloped in dynamic spicy brown sauce made from layers of chiles, garlic, ginger and of course Szechuan peppercorns ..but didn't. Very bland, dull not really Szechuan cuisine at all in my humble opinion. I had to add Szechuan Chili sauce (Dynasty brand rocks) and Chinese Five Spice powder to get this dish anywhere near Szechuan. The portion size was okay. Price was so so. Keep in mind that what these Chinese restaurants charge they are making a huge profit. For a $15.00 dish I could make it for under $6.00 Now onto the rice. IS THERE ANY CHINESE RESTAURANT OUT THERE IN THE ELGIN/HANOVER PARK/STREAMWOOD AREA THAT SERVES FLUFFY, LIGHT RICE???????? I haven't had light, fluffy, moist good rice from any Chinese restaurant in decades. Every Chinese restaurant I've eaten at has served under cooked, hard rice. Great Wall Chinese restaurant is a neighborhood restaurant. The restaurant servers work hard and make sure your food is packaged well and hot. They certainly give you plenty of food. The food itself (egg foo young shrimp, shrimp fried rice) is a bit greasy, for me, but flavorful. Probably good after a night out. I should have asked for condiments: soy sauce, hot mustard, or sweet and sour. None was provided and I had to ask for utensils. All in all, a pretty okay experience. read more

I gave Great Wall Chinese restaurant another try after hearing from my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. They really made it sound like the food from Great Wall Chinese restaurant has improved. I ordered the lunch special Lo Mein, my son wanted to try the Orange Chicken dish, and I added the Roast Pork appetizer. I picked up the food and brought it home. I ate my Lo Mein and tried the Roast Pork. For me, it's not delicious. My son tried his dish later in the day. His conclusion was the same. Not delicious. Please don't take my word for it. I'm merely sharing my thoughts and experience. Please give Great Wall Chinese restaurant a try and share your thoughts and experience. Service terrible! Went to pick up 5 min early so I could pay. Guy at the counter didn't even greet me for a couple minutes and it's not like he was working. No other customers and it didn't look like any other orders being done . After asking my order he took a long time to put it together and never looked in any type of rush . When I got home food was lukewarm and it was 60 degrees out. old owners that sold to these creeps would send me home in winter and the food was piping hot. 7 min drive. This use to be our favorite Chinese takeout when the elder Mom and Dad ran it for years, before they retired. Quality service, friendly atmosphere. Great food. Now, the youngsters have taken it over, and wow, we really miss Mom & Dad. Portions are now smaller, several times the low mein boxes were open and got all over the bag. Also once, we ordered and paid for two egg rolls. We only got one. When I brought it up, the kid at the counter was extremely defensive and aggressive saying I was trying to cheat them and they know positively they put the egg roll in. I could honestly care less about the egg roll missing. I know the previous owners would have laughed and just gave us an egg roll. What bothered me was the attitude and meanness from their staff. Terrible terrible customer service. My mother has been ordering from this establishment for years now and they've recently changed employees. Family owned restaurant so I'm guessing their younger family is taking over. Basically they use cheaper ingredients, cheaper materials, and have unprofessional employees. I asked for my money back because I was unhappy with the food and told them constantly that they've changed the size of the containers they serve their food in. Told us that we were liars and that we couldn't get a refund since they've already prepared the food. Mother was highly upset and disappointed and so was I since my mother has ordered from this establishment for years now. I been been going to this restaurant for over 20 years. It was the best Chinese restaurant in Elgin. It recently changed owners. They do not speak English well. It takes twice as long to place an order because they often do not understand what we are asking for. I stood in line for 20 minutes last night waiting to pick up an order I had phoned in. The delay was for the people ahead of me who were trying to place orders and people calling in to place orders. One lady asked for broccoli and shrimp. The owner did not understand what was being asked for. After a couple of minutes the owner said oh, shrimp with broccoli? They only had 3 people working. None spoke English well. I hope that they will hire someone who speaks English to take the orders. Because they don't speak English well, sometimes their responses sound rude. read more

This restaurant would definitely be described, in Guy Fieri terms, as a dive. It really does not have any seating (maybe 1 tiny table or booth if memory serves), and is more intended for take out. Our food was quite tasty, definitely the best we've found close to our home in Elgin. I would like to try it again to see if we have a similar result, but our chicken fried rice, pot stickers, and beef/broccoli was good. This place was definitely the worst Chinese "food" I have ever had. I love Chinese and decided to try this place out. Based on other reviews it sounded okay. The food was disgusting. The "chicken" was mushy and spongy. The fried rice was a dark brown color and tasted like old dirty oil. There was an artery of some sort hanging out of my wonton in the wonton soup which was super slimy and the smell and taste made me almost vomit. I wish I could get my $30 back for this as I ended up throwing it all in the trash. I am just grateful we didn't get sick from the little we tasted. This is the best Chinese food in the Chicago suburbs. My family and I have been ordering from here for at least fifteen years, and the food is always amazing. My wife's family lives in Hampshire, but they drive to Elgin for Great Wall because it's the best. Some of my favorite dishes are the Triple Delight, the Orange Chicken, and the Steamed Pork Dumplings. (Tip: Ask for the hot sauce on the side if you want to add a little extra heat to your dish.)
