    The Fried Tofu With Vegetables
    Steve A.

Carpentersville has a few okay Chinese restaurants, and this is one that's pretty basic but not as bad as it looks to be honest. It was actually a lot better than it seemed like. New China is located in a shopping center close to things like a Wal-Mart. Even so, forget about the image before you try it. The food we got was better than it looks in a few pictures. After placing a to go order, I came. It was pretty empty inside, as in no customers were actually inside. They were only accepting to go orders, so that's why. Basic kind of Chinese American items. We got the Fried Tofu With Vegetables. It's about $10 for the only portion. This is the kind of Chinese place that only has the one portion for tofu items, and it's large enough for two. It wasn't bad for all that honestly, helped because there was a lot. This was kind of greasy but okay. Getting orders from here isn't that bad except for those wanting dining in. It's only to go orders. The dining room isn't anything special anyway though.

    Dry stringy chicken

Normally I love the food I get from here. Today, not so much. My orange chicken was stringy and dry, old? Orange sauce good but couldn't eat. Shouldn't reheat yesterday's chicken and hide it in a sauce. I will go back but not order anything that has fried chicken in it

This is the place for Chinese! I live in Belvidere but anytime I'm near Carpentersville I stop and place an order.

The menu leans into familiar favorites, delivering dishes that are satisfying and approachable without trying to reinvent the genre. While the food is solid and consistently prepared, it doesn't quite push beyond the expected. A little bland and lacking a little heat. Still, for those looking for reliable flavors and a straightforward dining experience, China Bistro holds its place as a steady three-star option in the local lineup.

China Bistro has the standard…read moreeggrolls/spring-rolls filled with cabbage, beansprouts (and in some cases ground chicken or pork) just like every other slightly cheaper eggroll in McHenry County, but I still love them, with their crisp, flaky, oily eggroll skin dipped hot into their packaged prefab fake-orange sweet sauce and that spicy yellow Chinese mustard that my mom so loved. As far as the service goes, there is a counter to order take-out and that's it. That said, the menu is huge: filled with many of the typical American favorites like 'General Tsao's Chicken', 'Orange Chicken', and 'Hot & Sour Soup'. My favorites were the Shrimp in Lobster Sauce, the Ma Po Tofu, and the Moo Shu Pork. I also enjoyed the shrimp Egg Foo Young, and the Singapore Noodles (very curry-like). This is a standard Americanized pseudo-Cantonese restaurant that will give you every type of mid-quality delivery dish that you could want. As far as the Ambiance goes - it's a 'take-out' place. NO SEATING.

It's in the small details when they overstuffed our seafood fried rice container ($11), accommodated that I wanted it without soy sauce (I've been on a fried rice kick sans soy sauce lately - it's less sodium and I feel like I could taste ingredients better). I really enjoyed the seafood fried rice. It had calamari, imitation crab meat, shrimp, and onions. It was a perfect blend without too much salt or oil, and to top it of-- the rice was soft. I really dislike it when Asian restaurants make hard rice, or let the rice it too long because you can always tell when the rice is getting stale. My hubby was craving Garlic chicken ( small size for $8). We were quite hungry so we had already began eating before I realized I didn't take pictures of the rest of the food. By the time I took a photo the garlic chicken has already been half eaten. I liked that it had a little zing to it with chili peppers flakes, and has a little sweetness to it which goes perfectly on top of white rice. My favorite part of this dish is that the chicken was moist and soft. I can't enjoy a dish when the chicken is overcooked as that makes the chicken really dry. They had the perfect big, fat eggrolls - two for $5.25. The homemade apricot sauce was on point -- 10 out of 10. Not too many place have great homemade eggroll sauce offered with eggrolls. And we're not talking about the sweet-and-sour sauce packets. Those are not the same thing! For us Chinese and Asians it's all about the sauce and my husband is super picky about it. That's how you tell it's legit eggrolls. He approves of this sauce. We only wish that they gave us two servings of it versus one because I quickly ate 2/3 of the small sauce container for my eggroll and he wasn't too happy. Lastly, we had the hot and sour soup (large size $6). The ingredient were fine, but I have to say it was too salty and missed a mark on the sour. Finding the right balance makes the sauce for me. I judge a lot of places by their soups. This one was close but I have to take off a star for that. Overall, this was a satisfying meal and it didn't break the bank. We will be back to try more dishes. I saw that on their menu, they have seafood boil, and I'll be interested in checking that out in the future. I also need to remember to take more pictures of food before my hunger sets in.
