The smell of seafood when you walk in hits you like a brick wall. The H Mart across the street has seafood options too but does not smell like it. Went in to grab a few need and window shop. after being in there for a few minutes the security guard told us we had 5 minutes. We were looking for something in particular then a couple minutes later he came back and said, "too late its time to get out". The cashiers were not very friendly either. I always say "hi", "thank you", and "have a good day/evening". She didn't even acknowledge I was standing there. The customer service was terrible. I won't be going back. There are plenty of other stores that have the things I need. Also trying to find parking is crazy. read more

I especially was impressed by their instant ramen selection and their seafood section. The size of some of their seafood was crazy. The prices here are actually pretty good. Went here yesterday and got instant noodles. Was going to get a small kimchi jar for $6.99. Upon check out kimchi rang up $8.99. I told The girl it's $6.99. She went to the area to look. I followed a few minutes later. She got a man to change the price tag on the shelf and I caught them RED HANDED changing the price to $8.99 NOT COOL!! I said to them..... wow is that how you guys do business here? I'm not buying that. Located in Dun Huang plaza with the center of all hipster restaurants being located within one square mile. We came here to walk off dinner that we had in the plaza and it was actually a lot better than I remembered (empty and desolate ghost town inside the market previously). Not the greatest Chinese grocery store in Chinatown but you do avoid having to park again (it's a pain) at another plaza. Customer service is pretty meh and the meat and seafood options look sus. It's actually pretty clean inside but I attribute that to low foot traffic. Overall, it's alright. Nothing great but it'll have your staples without you having to re-park your car at another plaza and deal with Bellaire drivers with low IQ. read more

I'm willing to bet that a majority of the people who shop at Great Wall (#1) are here because they're also at Dun Huang Plaza (#2). They have a decent amount of inventory, but between the so-so prices, and poor customer service, I don't foresee Great Wall being destination grocery shopping compared to its import grocery counterparts. Location is the real winner here, as is the convenience of not having to bounce around the neighborhood. The produce is solid. They have a good array of fresh seafood, a number of common vegetables / fruits, and all the usual suspects for their imports. That second floor where they have specialty kitchenware items, such as their stools, chopstick collections, and cool dining sets are pretty awesome. During the Lunar New Year, they tend to go all out with the decorations and bring in a number of fun holiday themed specialty snacks for gifting. They also sell said decorations so that folks can take the festivities home. I think the prices are a little higher than most of the other supermarkets I tend to shop at and I can definitely note the less-than-enthusiastic workers here who aren't great at helping folks find what they need. My pro tip is having an image of the item you'd like on your phone ready for them to help them locate your item. Parking can be a challenge during the weekends but it's usually a lot more calm during the week. Driving 50 mins to shop at this Asian/Chinese market is a waste. The cashier does NOT speak English, only Spanish, when you have a question about your purchase, you still get reply in Spanish. And when you complain about no English, the Mexican cashier will give you a very impolite response, very aggressively! Unbelievable RUDE service!!! Am I in Mexico or the U.S.? When you ask for a manager, they told you there is no manager, and they made it very clear that they don't care if you shop here or not. Not to be confused with the nearby vineyard (Grape Wall) or Barbi's movie expertise (Gape Wall). It was never my favourite grocery store to be honest, but it's cool that it's right here in Dun Huang Plaza, because even though it's a little run-down and the shelves can be a little bare, and it doesn't have much on the fancier stores across the street, what it does have is some grocery store items when you need them in a pinch, and that's why we appreciate it so much. I normally go because they have a wide variety of spices but I have noticed birds in the market and when it just opened I did question the authenticity of some of the snacks. However, it seemed to improve and now there is a great variety! Language Used: English, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Cantonese Snacks: 5 Great Wall has started carrying a lot of the popular desserts and snacks at lower prices ($2-3) compared to other supermarket. Ex. Boba popsicles and Japanese Kit Kat's. They also have a great variety of flavor! For example they have seaweed flavored lays chips and steak flavored Cheetos. Vegetables: 4 Besides snacks I normally go to Great Wall for the vegetables since there is a great variety and they are normally fresh! However, I normally don't get it green onions from here since it is a bit more expensive Fruit: 3-3.5 While the variety of fruit is greater then the supermarket across the road it's pretty average compared to most of the grocery stores in Chinatown. They have plenty of imported drinks, dried foods, canned and jarred sauces, even the regular American meat cuts, ribs, etc. American beer, Japanese beer, etc. but I didn't see any Chinese beer. Lots of Asian markets on Hillcroft. I would say this is a top one. Great sea food. Produce is top notch. Employees are willing to help out. Only if asked though. Hard to navigate through store. I want to dedicate my 700th review to Great Wall Supermarket 大中華超級市場. I just can't contain the excitement of a well-organized Asian supermarket chain comes to Houston Chinatown. I have been waiting since last September to replace Dun Huang Supermarket. GW opened on 12/12/16. The company that owns Great Wall Supermarket established over a decade ago in NYC. Houston is the first store opened west of Mississippi River. If this doesn't excite you, come here and look for yourself. As a long-time Chinatown resident, I've never seen a turnaround business successfully changed the perspective of this huge supermarket footprint. They transformed every inch of this store into useful space. Who needs food vendors inside the supermarket? There are dozens of restaurants to grab a bite in the mall. They effectively placed produce department at the section where other operators used for concession stands. As you walk in, you'll see the fresh vegetables and fruits stare at you. It is the highlight of the Great Wall Supermarket. There are so many imported fruits and vegetables from China and Taiwan. They're priced reasonably. The section below household level is being used as traditional Chinese medicine 中药 and other canned goods. Dun Huang Supermarket used this area for vegetables before, which I didn't like. The seafood department is very clean (at least for now being new) and meat department has lots of great looking pork, beef and chicken (and other things in the buckets). Blows every other supermarket out of the water in terms of unique asian grocery items. I can't believe I haven't come here sooner. I rotate through all the asian supermarkets since each has its strong suit but this one on a whole is superior in terms of well roundedness. They have a huge range of snacks, some of which are carried at alot of other stores but not at the variety offered here, for example the Japanese kitkats (I've seen these at Hmart and Seiwa but GW had some flavors I haven't seen before) and "oreos", DARS chocolates, lots of Taiwanese snacks (packaged stinky tofu..amazing!), large size Irwin's fish skin snacks, durian flavored snacks, dried squid/ fish jerky brands, Japanese instant noodles, Korean snacks ( lots of sweet potato flavored items I couldn't find at Hmart as well lots of quirky instant noodles flavors) and of course, tons and tons of Chinese snacks. What is really cool is they even have small selection of snacks from Thailand (fish skin flavored Lays!). Both the seafood and produce section were super clean and they had great price on yamaimo, also found taiwanese melons here I haven't ever seen before. read more

While in Chinatown I stopped at this Asian supermarket. As soon as you walk in the smell of fish hits you and its very pungent. (it was a bit of a turn off) but you get used to it once you spend some time inside. They have the Produce to the left as you enter which is a very good spot. The vegetable were fresh and they carry a variety that you could only get if you to any place in Asia. I love durian so I was pleased to see that they carry it. I love Vietnamese coffee and I was able to find it here, it was $6.79 (but I looove viet coffee) so I had to get it. I usually go to the other place across the street to get my Cafe Du Monde but they had a great sale at $3.99 a can so I stocked up. This is a regular Asian store definetly would visit but they should work on the pungent fish smell. read more

After I finished my Asian tea, I needed milk. I was thinking about either Walmart or HEB, but I found Great Wall. I walked around, but I couldn't find milk. I still don't understand a supermarket without milk. I bought kimchi and aojiru-Japanese veggie drink. The prices were reasonable. It was relatively clean for an Asian supermarket. During this COVID-19 time, they changed their hours to 8-8PM. I was just there and the police officer that was in the front said they're CLOSED. It was only 7:48, how are you closed????? If you're looking for something different this is a unique place to shop for produce, asian cuisine or anything kitchen related..including dish ware, pots & pans and cooking utensils! Asian markets are abundant in the Houston Bellaire Chinatown area but I'd have to say this place is perhaps my favorite. I like the produce here. Fresh and well priced, sometimes I'll make the trek out here to shop especially for the chinese vegetables like gai lan, etc. You get the feeling that you are overseas. If you are a fan of chinese and asian cuisines you can find practically anything here and for a good price! I like the dish ware that you can get. Ceramic teapots, tea cups, bowls, etc. of a high quality for an amazing price! Most of it located upstairs, the selection is quite good in my opinion. I like to come here mainly for that. Spend an afternoon in Chinatown. Go to eat at Star Ice & Teriyaki, then wander over to Great Wall and stock up on your dishes, cookware etc. A nice way to spend the afternoon! read more

I didn't think I would write a review for a supermarket but I was surprised how clean and organized this one was. Everything was well stocked and the floors were spotless. First time I see an Asian supermarket with 2 stories too! They have almost everything you need as far as Asian groceries goes. The products look fresh and affordable. Parking can get tough here because the market is located towards the back, but there's a garage next to it. I guess the "Great Wall" is indeed as great as you think. read more

Half the time I go here with a full list of items, I can only get some of them because the fruits or vegetables are rotten. Some parts of the floor were wet and the glass divider in the meat and seafood department were not clean. I wouldn't want to buy meat when I can barely see through the glass. This traditional Asian supermarket has a good collection of fresh produce, seafood/fish, meat and other Asian specialty food products. Their seafood counter has a full butcher service. Like many other Asian stores, the butchers here doesn't speak English well, and hence hard to communicate if you don't know their language. I have been here on weekends and weekdays alike, and have found that they always have fresh vegetables/fruits. I find their prices comparatively cheaper in the market, which makes this store more popular. The store is clean and well organized with enough (about 5-7) cash counters. It does have that traditional Asian store smell in the air though. They accept almost all credit/debits, if I am not wrong, above $5. There is a security guard at the entrance. As many reviewers have pointed, parking is tight here. There are several 30 min and 2 hours only parking closer to the store. I keep an eye on these spots and have so far always managed to find a spot close by. Its smaller than 99 Ranch but its an almost equally good option if you are in the area. read more

The entire place had an odor of fish immediately upon entering. The smell is so strong, it takes 10 minutes to get used to it (or maybe numb to it?). The prices low, but compared to similar outlets, the savings aren't Great Wall huge, though. For a practical foreigner, I relatively easily navigated store. No public bathrooms. Could be a fun place to toodle around while you wait for your noodles at Tiger Den across the parking lot, IF they get rid of that fishy smell. read more

Refused to let me buy a single tiny bottle of sake on my 21st birthday. Gave my ID to the cashier, she showed it to another cashier, & then called over a manger. After going back & forth for a couple minutes the cashier handed me back my ID & told me "I can't sell this to you." I asked her "why not?" & she said "because today is your birthday, you're not 21 yet" (seriously, what??). Their produce came at a good price but the seafood was a bit pricy. There's a lot of competition between Jusgo, Welcome, Hmart, and now that Great Wall is open, it can be hard to decide which grocery to go to. Although, a really nice thing about this supermarket is that it's so close to a lot of good restaurants, cafes, and basically a lot of places since it's in the middle of dun huang plaza, so whenever you're just chillin at dun huang plaza at a tapioca shop or bakery and sudenly need to buy some groceries Great Wall is nearby.
