The embassy is located in a great neighborhood in Manhattan, a 2 min walk to Central Park and MET. My experience at the embassy was for a Schengen visa. I had all the paperwork they needed ready. The process was smooth and the staff was friendly and accommodating. My dad and I had 2 different appointments at different times slots. The officer was kind enough to see us one after the other (they did refuse initially and said it depends on the volume, which was understandable). Overall the reviews are inconsistent on Google and yelp, I guess you have everything you need as advised, you will walk out happy. read more

Horrible experience. First of all, they corral everyone visiting the consulate into 1 medium sized room off the main lobby, Then, the staff member assigned to you comes into the room, where you have to discuss your business in public. Today, the woman attending us was acting like a raving lunatic. We refused to be interrogated in the waiting room, so she took us into the lobby. Then she brings us into her office also off the main lobby, where she ALREADY had a client. And starts to handle our issue in front of this poor woman seating at her desk. I am writing to formally express my extreme dissatisfaction with the service I have received at the Greek Consulate in New York City. My experience has been nothing short of appalling, and I feel compelled to share my frustrations, as I am currently in the process of filing a formal complaint with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The registry clerks at the consulate have consistently been rude, unhelpful, and disrespectful. They show a complete lack of professionalism, with no regard for the individuals who rely on their services. On numerous occasions, I have encountered staff who are dismissive and downright hostile, leaving me to question the competence and demeanor of those entrusted with representing Greece abroad. One of the most frustrating aspects of my experience has been the consistent inability to reach anyone via phone. The consulate seems to have a policy of never answering their phones, and when you are able to leave a message, you can expect no return call. When I have inquired about this issue, I have been told that they are "short-staffed." However, the lack of responsiveness goes beyond understaffing--it's a failure of basic customer service. To make matters worse, emails to the consulate often take months to receive a response, if they are answered at all. I have waited up to 2-3 months for a reply, which is both unacceptable and highly unprofessional for a consulate that is supposed to serve the needs of its citizens. I have personally witnessed appalling behavior in the consulate's waiting room. A room full of people, many of whom have urgent matters to attend to, were left waiting for extended periods while registry clerks were lounging around, chatting on their cell phones, and taking coffee breaks. This level of neglect and indifference is not only unprofessional but also deeply disrespectful to those who depend on the consulate's services. Given the ongoing issues with unresponsiveness, disrespect, and mismanagement at the Greek Consulate in New York, I am left with no choice but to escalate this matter further. I will be submitting a formal complaint to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in hopes that this gross negligence will be addressed and rectified. I sincerely hope that the consulate will take this feedback seriously and make the necessary improvements to its service. What is up with the Greek consulate which no longer wishes to communicate with anyone needing help? I have to get a stamp for my brother's death certificate and now I can't make plans to go to Greece because they do not answer any communication -- emails are unanswered and they don't take phone calls. Worse, their "virtual assistant" on their website told me that because my brother was not a Greek citizen, registering his death certificate is not something they do. Wrong. My brother had a Greek tax number and paid Greek taxes. This is simply appalling from a consulate. In the past, you could speak to someone on the phone and make an appointment. I am stunned at the positive reviews, I have been trying to get Greek citizenship for more than ten years and have had multiple meetings. Now I cannot even get a meeting scheduled despite multiple e mails. My father was born in Greece, I owned a house and paid taxes in Greece for 50 years, I go every summer for a month and still own property and yet I am unsuccessful because my father's Americanized version of his last name varies slightly. I was told to go to District Court to get the spelling changed on an 80 year old document. Being an attorney. I knew it was impossible but went and it was impossible. Recently visited Consulate general of Greece to apply for a Visa for my upcoming vacation in Greece. Had an excellent experience... Very courteous and accommodating officers. Specially the main lady ( I don't recollect her name) who manages the Visa processing, was so cooperative, patient and kind. She was really helpful and sweet. I'm very impressed with how my case was handled in this Consulate. Ms. Tsarouha went over and above to help me and my husband with an urgent and last minute need for a power of attorney. My Greek passport had expired and my Greek ID was nowhere to be found but she knew exactly what to do to make it all work. Although she was very busy, she had a great attitude. While there, a Greek man came in with his wife. He was rude to the employees and condescending to his wife. A lady who worked there (can't remember her name) handled him very gracefully. The madam who works in the visa department has called me multiple times to help me with my shipping. In the end, she went out of her way to help me drop the Fedex package so that it will save me a trip to NYC and I can receive it before travelling. Impressed with the level of professionalism and easy going attitude at this Consulate. Slight odd thing, is there is NO security at all. You just walk in from the street. The nice guard at a table asks what is it you are there for, then you take a seat. (Class C Visa application here). John, the Visa processor was nice and easy going. Picked up my visa a week late. I'm surprised at all the positive comments. The Greek Consulate in NYC is probably one of the least pleasant places I've had the misfortune to visit in my young adult life. I'd probably rather sit through a root canal than have to visit the Greek Consulate again, but unfortunately as a Greek-American, I'm sure I will have to see them again. Answering emails? Didn't happen. Answering phone calls? Well, if you like playing phone tag it's fun. They apparently don't answer in the mornings (a worker there told me this), and their voicemail is almost always "full." If you try to call and select the English option - good luck if they ever answer. I called back and selected Greek and did get a response. I think it's mostly a matter of luck that someone is next to the phone and willing to pick it up. Getting straight forward answers? LOL. If you call them 5 times (and they actually answer), you'll get 5 different answers to your question. We ask what documents we need for certain services, and rarely get the same response (leading to the mishap below). Scheduling an appointment isn't too bad, and they do try to avoid making you come back...except when my mother and I had to come multiple times to get her passport (costing hundreds of dollars in plane tickets - my mother nearly broke down in tears when they told her she needed to come again because she was missing a document, missed work and school, and sleepless hours on buses). Interestingly, they couldn't mail my mother's passport or perform any procedures by mail when she applied. A year later when I applied, they could mail it. Go figure... Oh, and most documents appear to be filled in by hand rather than with a computer. Technologically up to date? You bet! You can only pay in cash (which I always find questionable among Greek services), but always bring change and more than you need because I'm sure nobody will be able to quote the same price for you. It's yet another fun surprise when you get there (for example, one person's review said it cost them $600 for dual citizenship....I only paid under $100). I was also surprised by the positive review of Mr. Pappas. When I was there he judged my allegiance to the Greek nation, and made a racial slur solely based on the city in Greece where my family is from - completely inappropriate for an employee of a consulate. Of course, for fear of confrontation and the typical Greek response (you pissed me off? Ok, let me charge you more and take forever to complete your request), I unfortunately had to sit in silence. read more

Impossible Consulate, booked an appointment with the consulate, when I arrived I was informed that the appointment was auto cancelled because supposedly I did not re-confirm it 5 days prior to the appointment but at no stage I was asked to confirm it again. In effect using their appointment system you are not actually making an appointment, it clearly is mis described, their fake 'appointments' are actually a possibility of an appointment which perhaps you get if you are lucky enough to receive their 'confirmation' email. Not only the service is truly awfull but the consulate receptionist is a rude lazy 'could not care less' character who adds insult to injury. Basically I recommend not to rely on any service of the consulate, the service is exceptionally bad. Having grown up in Greece this experience is all too typical of the Greek state, i my opinion there is an adversarial attitude to citizens by the bureaucracy, Awfull . read more

Being an only child, I will admit I can be a little self centered. On the other hand I would not be too quick to say that I come across as bossy or over-indulged. I certainly would not say I "lack social skills" which is why I am surprised that the people at the Greek Consulate think they know everything there is to know about me. All that being said, I will say I was impressed that the Consulate is dog friendly. I was able to leave Francis leashed up right outside the door and did not have to pay for a dog sitter, which, given the waiting and redundant paperwork (as well as crowds) made for a slightly more enjoyable experience. Francis recently had some golf ball size polyps removed and is wearing an "e-collar" so being able to have him close by was a definite plus. Lastly, although the process was slow and slightly confusing I was able to get my passport processed with minimal headache. I'm excited for my trip. read more

I was really impressed at the improved quality of the service my brother, sister, and I received when we recently (10/9/13) visited the Greek Consulate in NYC to renew our passports. Since we last visited in 2006, the staff has gotten smaller, but the service was much improved. Angie Iliopoulou was extremely friendly and helpful, as was the Consul General, Georgios Iliopoulos, who actually welcomed us to the Consulate and the Passport Office. All of the employees made us feel welcome, and worked diligently to complete the different steps of the passport experience as efficiently as possible. Everyone was attentive, friendly and polite. We had our three Greek/EU passport applications completed in just two hours, which was much speedier than our first application experience in 2006. I am happy to see that the Greek Consulate is welcoming, friendly, and back to serving the Greek, Greek-American, and American communities in NYC with politeness and humility. The Greek embassy in London is basically a joke. I was trying to renew my passport for a year and they didn't have any slots available. I would try to call 3 times a day and they never picked up the phone. I emailed them multiple times saying i need to renew my passport and they never replied to any email. When I finally got an appointment after a year I visited them and was waiting in a queue for two hours even though I had an appointment, they put me in a queue with other people who didn't. When I complained I received an answer which was closer to an assault saying you have to wait there like everyone else, we won't treat you like you are special. Then when my turn came up the employee gave me a form to complete and I had to stand up doing the form in front of everyone. The employees would ask personal information to everyone while the queue was there like are you married, where is your bank account and things like that, showing they have no idea what personal data and GDPR is. I was shocked. Not only me but everyone there was really angry. When I asked for a pen to complete the form the employee asked me if I have one as they don't have!! I said no I don't and then she brought a pen from her desk really angrily and threw it to me so aggressively that everyone else around me was shocked and shouted to her that she could have thrown the pen in my eye. I don't understand how no one is reviewing how they operate and how they let them do all these. read more

I made an appointment for my husband and my daughter to renew and issue a passport respectively. The employee handling our request called me twice, once to note down personal data a week before the meeting and the second to ask me which request would be processed first. In either calls he refused to identify himself while being unnecessarily aggressive and rude, saying in a condescending manner that there was no need for me to know his name and hanging up the phone while I was still trying to speak to him. Arriving at the consulate my husband and daughter were waiting outside and while I went to move the car, which took no more than a couple of minutes, they were admitted in the building and my daughter was asked by that same employee to hand over her documents which she explained were with me. At that moment the gentleman raised his voice to my 14 year old child insisting that she handed him the documents immediately. Throughout our stay in the Consulate he maintained an unnecessarily rude and aggressive tone. It was an overall a negative experience and I am sorry that this employee is representing the Greek state abroad. read more

I felt compelled to write this review to help fellow yelpers with more information in regards to this embassy. This review is based on my schengen visa process. Overall my experience was good. It could be much better and probably five stars if they provided enough information on their website. This lack of information is ridiculous since it's pretty simple to update websites nowadays. I emailed for an appt. a response was received after two emails were sent. Just about six business days. An appt time and day will be emailed to you. I was very prepared for the documents requested so on the day of my appt. it went smoothly. The line was short and I was taken care of quickly. I returned to pick up my passport with the visa after two weeks. Pick up is only available 1-2 pm. Which meant I had to take a day off from work just to pick it. They do have an option of pre-stamped envelopes to return your passport/visa, but I did not feel comfortable having my passport mailed back to me. My other issue with this place is no one ever picks up the phone. One time someone did pick it up but did not know the answer to a simple question. read more

I had decided on doing a walk in since their websites says that you can, and my calls and emails were going unanswered. I arrived very early in the morning and was the last person on line once the doors opened up. After explaining to the receptionist that I just had some basic general questions to ask about a long stay visa, he called to another gentle man to assist me. Then I was led to a room where I thought I would be able to easily have my questions answered, when a woman came in and started speaking in Greek with the man about my inquiry. She then looked at me, and told me to go online and make a appointment. I very calmly explained to her that I was not ready to apply for a visa just yet and was simply doing a walk in just to clarify some general questions that I had. She then became very nasty and unprofessional. I was absolutely appalled when she mentioned that it seemed as if I already did research so why did I need to be there?...just speechless. After remaining calm but insistent, she finally gave in to answering some of my questions. In her words "so long as she didn't have any appointments scheduled." Did she not realize that a receptionist let me in at some point?! Anyway, after this very uncomfortable introduction, I was able to ask what I needed and was given a very general email address and phone extension to direct my further questions to moving forward. About a week later I did follow up and prayed that it wasn't her that would reply and unfortunately it was, and she remained as brass and cold as can could be. The good news, I was able to find a way to accommodate my travel needs that does not involve this embassy. I wish you the best if you ever need to visit this consulate in particular. read more

I have been dealing with the Greek Consulate in NYC since my father's death in 1996 .. Today's visit was the worst ever and I have sworn that I will never go back . The staff there was very rude to me even though I kindly explained to them that Greek is my second language and I do not understand some of the words . I am still in shock that they yelled at me in Greek several times as I attempted to translate in English for my brother .. I truly believe after this experience that the staff does NOT want to help .. I know for a fact the lady that was helping us speaks English because I heard her speaking English before to someone else , she made no attempt to speak to us and explain anything in English which made us not only confused but anxious as she was asking us to produce certain documents ( which we could not because we did not understand what she was saying ).. I feel the staff simply does not care and that they are there just to collect a pay check .. I will never return and would much rather pay airfare to handle my business in Greece , that's how bad this experience was.. I seriously left the building crying because I was so humiliated by the dismissive way they treated us . read more

If I could have selected no stars I would have. THIS IS A NIGHTMARE! I had to visit to do sworn testimony for a court hearing in Greece. I called in order to make sure the embassy does this (they do), they quickly tell you to go on line to schedule an appointment. It is done through the power of attorney department and when I finally figured out how/where to make the appointment online, there is no place to indicate that it is for sworn testimony (enorki dilosi). I arrive for the appointment and I get called into Ms. Tsarouha's office where she then proceeds to inform me that I need either a Greek id or a Greek passport or a US passport to complete this. She also states that she has not checked her emails and hasn't received anything from my lawyer. I show her on my phone the email. She insists that she hasn't seen it. I insist. She then tells me to send it again and provides me with a little slip with the email address to send it to. I don't need it I said. You see, your email address appears automatically. Then she tells me that I didn't indicate on the appointment that it is for an enorki dilosi. I informed her that I would have if the appointment scheduling site allowed me to (by the way I had emailed the consulate when I received the appointment confirmation email that it was for this and not POA). Then after my appointment time came and went, (waited for about 1.5hrs) she informed me she needs to speak to my lawyer (thank god I had them on phone standby) and that I have to pay in cash 90euros per page. What? I called. Why wasn't I informed of this???? Who has that much cash on them??? I paid $325 dollars for three pages (front and back) and when I dared to ask for a receipt, I was told that I don't need one. What????? I've lived in Greece for years and when I went to the American Embassy for things I was always provided a receipt. Isn't that standard? Well there is nothing standard here. Expect challenges lots of them and make sure to bring all your ids including drivers license as proof of address. And bring a lot of cash!!!!!! For something that would normally cost 50 euros in Greece. If I wasn't determined and passionate about getting this done they make it easy to just get up and walk out. It's too bad. read more
