A perfect example of a cute and quaint children's bookstore filled with unique items and a friendly atmosphere. Each shelf is packed with books and other goods, as well as recommendations and knick knacks. You won't necessarily find a bargain here but they do have a small sale section and prices are comparable to other book sellers. Masks are encouraged but not required anymore. Street parking only.

I love supporting independent book sellers!! Such a cute bookshop! It is small but PACKED with books for babies/kids, along with toys and plenty of stuffed animals tucked among it all to entice little hands. We are visiting Portland just for a few days, but if I lived close enough I would definitely take part in their story times with my daughter. There is a nice, covered outdoor patio to the side where I assume those take place. I also saw on their calendar they offer sign ups for kids to come practice reading to a therapy dog! (ahh, I just can't...insert sobbing emoji here)

Avocado and an Ice Cream (earlier was convinced it was a cupcake, 9/27/19)

Stopped into Green Bean Books (9/27/19), because of course it's an indie bookstore full of children's titles. But what caught my fancy with nearly a side of squee were all the stuffed animals and food items strategically placed all over various bookshelves. So cute that I had texted photos taken of some of these items to The Homie at school and my colleagues at work. Lovely and helpful bookstore business associate (or owner?) who upon my inquiry led me to the culinary section. I stood on a step stool to procure a copy of Yum Yum Dim Sum. I had a flashback reading this countless times to Alex (aka The Homie) when he was very young. He attends high school now. Yes, I went to a bookstore and made an impulse purchase of a stuffed ice cream cone ($17, originally thought it was a cupcake). There were others that I should have purchased but...didn't. It's a Portland neighborhood gem...make the effort to support a local indie bookstore. The gift of reading enriches us all.

Discovered this whimsical bookstore in the Alberta district today. Was greeted by two amazing people that guided me to the perfect books for my nephews and niece. It was throughly the most delightful experience. I described my nephews and niece and the lovely staff found the most incredible books for me. I recommend them, and I will definitely be back!!

Found this little bookstore while exploring Alberta Street. If I had a kid, I would love bringing them here. It's adorable and would recommend it for families with kids! Lots of books for children and young teens. They host readings and little events once in a while as well. Love how they try to involve community activities! LAYOUT: It looks small, but it's a little bigger once you're inside than how it looks from the outside. It's very cozy, well-decorated, and super kid friendly. SERVICE: I didn't buy anything, but the ladies who were working there were really sweet and friendly. FIND LOWLY WORM: They have a little game in the store where you have to find Lowly Worm. I found him pretty quickly. It's a fun thing to do once you're there though. Great throwback for me as I loved Richard Scarry's Busytown series haha.

I love bringing my son in here. It is our first option when buying children's books for birthdays and special occasions for him or his friends parties. The staff always have great suggestions if you can't find anything yourself. I think it is important to support fun, cute and local children's book stores so please consider this before buying online. We love the little room at the back and hearing books being read on the patio.

There aren't any Indy book stores where I live, so was thrilled to come across Green Bean Books. I've got an avid 6th grade reader and an 8th grader doing his best to abstain from reading all together. The owner was able to help me on both fronts and I walked about with six books for the kids. Owner was very knowledgable about her inventory, every book recommended she had read herself. So, there was no guessing, her choices were solid based on what I could tell her about my readers. And she even had a couple books for me after I sheepishly admitted to being a fan of the young adult post-apocalyptic genre. Great service, great selection.

Hard to say anything that hasn't been said. This place is way bigger than most libraries and the…read morelargest independent bookstore in US. Maps are key to finding anything, sadly no used board games. The kids section is great for how to draw books, love used books stocked next to new. The catalogue computers (just like a library) were helpful - told you both what section, shelf to find your both, and number of both new and used copies available which is fantastic (just make sure to write down more then section number if that exists, it still took a while to find a specific book - a obtuse and somewhat arbitrary categorization (ie a book we wanted was under mental games) Their summer reading program was amazing for $5 coupon to be used on purchase of anything.

Powell's City of Books is HUGE. I knew it was supposed to be one of the biggest independent…read morebookstores in the world, but I don't think I really understood what that meant until I walked inside. The Burnside location takes up an entire city block and has SO many different sections. There are new and used books, gifts, and basically every genre and random little category you can think of. The different rooms even have their own names, and the whole place feels like a giant book maze. You could easily spend hours just wandering around. I loved browsing through everything. Even when I wasn't looking for anything specific, I kept finding things that caught my attention. The color-coded sections and maps definitely helped because otherwise I probably would have just gotten lost somewhere in the shelves and never been seen again. Definitely one of those Portland places I'd recommend even if you're not a huge book person. It's just really fun to walk around and explore, and I can totally see why Powell's is such an iconic part of Portland.
