Led by Mr. Dwayne, the tour is an hour and a half learning about the Burton Street Community, a historically Black neighborhood in West Asheville and the victim of gentrification and highway expansions. Hood Huggers was created to serve as a champion for the 1912 neighborhood and its long-time residents. My wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I booked a Sunday morning tour. Since it was just us, he gave us the option to walk it or take his little shuttle. Mr. Dwayne gave us the background on the area before Mr. Cotton, the grandson of the man who founded the neighborhood, joined us with a book of photos. After a drive, we ended at the Peace Gardens and Market, a sacred space for the community.

We were given a history of the area; shown some of the places Dirty Dancing was filmed in the Autumn of 1986. We saw the stairs where Jennifer Grey practiced her dancing. The movie was set in summer but the filming was in autumn so the tree leaves were painted. The water was cold while filming so the actors needed to get warmed up between takes. Some of the houses on the lake caught on fire so that led to a fire service with a boat so they can get there quicker than by road for fires on the lake. A lot of the homes are second homes for folks so I was surprised by the size of them. One of the houses had its own incline system to get from the house to the lake. It reminded me of an incline railway. Another house looked like a castle on the lake. Some of the original houses were smaller. The views from the lake were amazing with the Blue Ridge mountains and Chimney Rock. It is a fun tour with great scenery.

I also question the driving judgement of the coach drive/business owner, after seeing how he handled traffic situations on the trip. Plus, the owner called no one to assist guests when our tour arrived back almost 3 hours late, and I had to wait a half-hour just to get my car keys, left in the business office per Treks rule. I lived through it all, but never again.

I wanted to book them for tarot card as well, however I wasn't sure where to fit that into our schedule. We had Kristin as our hiking guide and she was so incredibly sweet! She also lead us through an amazing relaxing, yet energizing yoga sesh on the top of the mountain. I would love to do this again at sunset because I can only imagine how much more magical it was! The tour supposedly doesn't always have the same restaurants or the same dishes which is awesome if you want to do it twice. The food everywhere was great and each chef had a very nice blurb to give about their history. The walking portion was nice because it gave you a view at the beautiful quaint town of Black Mountain including the historic district. He was very personable, entertaining, and knowledgeable. They were very accommodating to my 80-something-year-old grandparents who were able to ride in a car, listen to the tour through speaker phone, but not have to walk from place to place. The food at every stop was great! They were also accommodating to the food allergies a few family members had, which was fantastic! We can't say enough about how great the tour was.
