Last week I had a craving for some fresh fruit so I stopped into the Manhattan Fruit Exchange and grabbed a pack of strawberry's and black cherry's. Strawberry's with sugar are one of my favorite snacks and these are the ripest, juiciest, sweetest strawberry's I've ever tasted. Don't be fooled by the name, Manhattan Fruit Exchange has a plethora of produce ranging from common to hard to find fruits and veggies. Things to know: The space is large and refrigerated so be prepared for the chill or bring a sweater (the workers wear sweatshirts even in the summer). Self serve. CASH ONLY.

They are only open on Sundays so make sure to make it early to get all these great products. My favorite reason to go is to interact with the workers. My favorite employee is Pierina; she would always have a smile on her face and was always available to help. When I didn't have cash, she would help me with the debit and credit tokens. I have not seen her in a while so I am wondering what happened to her since she has been working there every Sunday since I can remember. I will try to locate her at other green markets.

While prices have risen, it is still considered affordable for the area. Expect produce prices to be between $2-5 depending on the item. There's also more than just produce, there is meat as well as seafood. Prepackaged goods are also available and there's a number of an imported items. If one is lucky, the store bodega cat might make an appearance. Service is not going to be that helpful and the quality of a lot of things are probably not going to be optimal. The store is also not the cleanest or the most organized. However, if one can spend $20 walk out with a fish, snacks, and a decent selection of fruit, that's a deal anywhere, but especially NYC. Like all affordable things in NY, it is strictly cash only.
