A lovely farmers market for sunday mornings. Stalls sell a pretty good variety of fruit, veggies, fresh herbs, cheese and other dairy, and baked goods. I come to buy fresh fruit and herbs, and sometimes pick up a few baked treats as well. There's also a booth selling seasonal flowers.

This is a review solely to GROWNYC the organization that organizes Jackson Heights market during COVID-19. I've been going to Jackson Heights market for more than seven years and love that we have access to fresh produce however our life changed drastically this year and that reflects on how farmers markets GROWNYC conducts business. These are some of the changes and issues I have mentioned and hope will be helpful to you: 1. Not all vendors list their prices and they change/ charge depending of your ethnicity. If you are Latino and speak Spanish you can get away with good deal from some of the farmers as price is not listed. 2. You are not allowed to touch produce the staff that picks up the produce for you is not very sufficient and if you don't speak Spanish is a bit difficult to communicate. I've end up with cucumbers and zucchini that had to be tossed in the trash in a day after purchase. I wonder why we can pick up our produce in supermarkets but GROWNYC doesn't allow us to pick our produce at their markets. Are the regulations different or COVID is dangerous for outdoors markets and not so much inside supermarkets? 3. Once your purchases are gathered in bags they are placed in basket by the staff behind the register while you pay. Do check your purchases because I end up spending $7 on tomatoes that were missing in the bag. Yes I know it's my fault that I didn't double check when I picked up from the basket after I paid but if I'm supporting local farmers it's two way street and trust should be solid. 4. When you pick up your produce take your time and do not allow the staff that places your purchases in bags to rush you! 5. Make sure you check the cost of produce and if the staff calculates it correctly. 6. If you have issues or problems with your purchases do not expect that GROWNYC will help you resolve the issue/problems. Make sure you double check your purchases and you are charged correctly regardless how many people are online and the farmers are trying to rush you. 5. Be prepared to wait so plan accordingly after all we have restricted pandemic lifestyle. I have contacted GROWNYC via social media in regards of missing purchases from their vendor they ignored me as well as the person appointed at the market. I hope by sharing my last month farmers market experience is helpful to all of you.

The Greenmarket is the busiest in Queens. On Sunday the traffic gets pretty heavy with everyone stopping to see what is fresh. Today I was hunting for "Honeycrisp" apple; as recommended by Yelper Helen Y. I have been searching several Greenmarkets but have not found them. Today I found them and got a taste of Honeycrisp apples and it is very good! The Honeycrisp is little like a cross between Fuji, Granny Smith and Ambrosia, rosy in color, very juicy, very sweet but crispier then a Fuji with a slight tartness of the Granny Smith. This Greenmarket is in the heart of Jackson Heights and visited my many ethnic groups. The farmer stalls are setup on the edge of Traverse Park and 78th Street is shut downed during the Greenmarket period as a "playstreet: for kids, family to enjoy. This opened opportunities ofr local mom & pop food vendors to sell some tasty snack, chicken and specialty Mexican produces. Today's harvest is huge fresh apples (all $1 a pound!), radishes the sizes of cue balls (slice & pan fried with butter Oh baby!), squash (for spicy Thai soap) and red beets (Borscht Da!). JH Greenmarket Schedule: Sundays, June 6 through Dec. 19 8am-3pm

The largest stand also operates at the Jackson Heights greenmarket on Sundays, and is typically my go-to for summer corn, basil, summer squash, and zucchini, along with a great selection of peppers and greens. This is a smaller farmer's market than some in the city, but I like that it's open on a weekday and is filled with the diversity of the neighborhood.

There are 54 green markets throughout the city, eight which are located in Queens. These markets are run through the non profit organization GrowNYC, whose goal is to create a relationship between farmers and urban residents. On my most recent visit, vendors had: Organic honey & eggs, cilantro, shallots, arugula and gorgeous-just picked strawberries and cherries. In August, the peaches and tomatoes are amazing. This is not a huge farmers market, actually it's quite limited in the produce they have. Sadly there are NO cheeses, preserves or meat. However, the greens and fruit are the highlights here. I love farmer's markets! What foodie doesn't? The sights, smells & atmosphere just make me happy. This is the first of many Farmers market reviews for the Summer of 2013 from this Yelper. I'm in my fourth year of membership for this CSA and it's great. I get the freshest veggies and…read morefruit ever (fresher than what I've gotten at the farmers' market!) delivered locally to the Forest Hills Jewish Center. The amount of veggies and fruit delivered is likely too much for a single person like me so I split my share with a friend (or two). What I've loved is learning about new produce and supporting local farmers. I now am pretty expert at cooking with kale (hated it at first), garlic scapes, kohlrabi, celeriac, purslane and so much more. The farm we support believes in producing hearty, healthy, organic veggies and you'll see loads of them in the deliveries each week. The CSA gets produce delivered from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm on LI, fruit and berries from Briermere Farms on LI, grains/four/amazing beans from Cayuga Organics near Ithaca NY and then usually another farm for garlic, cheeses and jams that are offered during the season. Since the pick-ups are at the FHJC, all of the items are kosher. Sign-up is only during March/April and then the season starts just after Memorial Day and runs through the week of Thanksgiving (26 weeks - weekly pick-up). There is also a winter season with root veggies that runs from Dec-March where the pick-ups are every three weeks with more carrots than you might know what to do with (make Carrot Candy -- great recipe from Mark Bittman that I swear by). Overally, a wonderfully run CSA and I'm glad to to be a member. This year, you can pay for your share by PayPal (so I guess they sort of accept credit cards too).

I was wondering: green market vs a CSA? Since the Forest Hills greenmarket and Tuv Ha'Aretz CSA…read moreare in the same location, it really came down to cost and choice. You have to sign up and pay in advance for the whole season, usually in the spring. I emailed tuv@fhjc.org to get on their list and to inquire about availability before my first year as a CSA member. Volunteering is required (help at share pick-ups, newsletter writing, deliver unclaimed shares to the food bank, unload the delivery truck, events, etc.) keeps the costs of the shares down; I have been part of a CSA where volunteering was not required, and it costs over double what I pay at Tuv Ha'Aretz, so it's well worth the pay-back of volunteering for a few hours. In terms of cost, the CSA wins -- at about $25 a week, it's a bargain. For the same amount of vegetables, I can pay about $40 at the greenmarket. In addition, I enjoy playing a version of "Iron Chef" against myself -- use up all the vegetables and fruit we get (after all, wasting the vegetables is a waste of money, too). They're chosen by the farmers, so the delivery is often a surprise and an education when we get things we haven't cooked with or eaten before. I've learned to prep and love purslane, for example. And I've learned that some dishes -- for instance, like spanakopita -- are about anything which can be called "greens" -- chard, herbs, onion tops, turnip tops, carrot leaves, kale, lettuces, etc. -- and not just spinach; so, it's become my go-to for masses of greens and herbs when they are producing heavily. With a CSA, you get a share of what the farmer is growing every week for half the year from June to November. This CSA gets its shares from an organic-certified farm (Golden Earthworm); the fruit is minimally sprayed -- pests make this the reality of trees and fruit bushes in our locale. In contrast, the farmers' market allows you to pick and choose among what's available: organic vs non, choice of produce, etc. My cooking has changed, and I feel more attuned to the seasons since joining this CSA. The separate winter share is, as expected, less exciting and varied, but that's the reality of winter vegetables and I've become more creative and open about how I cook and feed my family and friends throughout the year. For instance, too many squashes? I make ravioli, risotto, potstickers, shepherd's pie, halvah, chili, etc. We live in Queens, considered the most culturally diverse county in the country, so we have a lot of inspiration to use "what's in the box" every week. At ~$25 a week, I can afford to supplement from the greenmarket if there is truly something else I want in my kitchen and table. And I really love that I don't have to garden to get amazingly fresh and vibrant produce.

It's very reassuring to see this as you can't always trust fresh ingredients are being used in other places that make smoothies. When ordering a smoothie, they'll ask what you want for the base. The options are Apple juice, coconut water, almond milk or water. We almost always choose coconut water as it's a great source of electrolytes AND tastes absolutely delicious with any of the smoothies using tropical fruits.
