I've never seen so many different grocery stores, in one location. If you can't find what you want in Lancaster County, then.. what gives?? Swimming with the ladies at gym and one of them goes on about Green Hills grocery store and how there's a line out the door, on saturday morning. Now you got me as I lean closer towards her. She continues, excitedly and exclaims how wonderful their deli section is. Of course, the Yelper that I am, has to go and check out this grocery store. Though it's set-up is similar to Aldi, it also reminds me of Marshalls. There is a deli and their prices for meat and cheese are at least $4 off per pound, from the other nearby grocery stores. Yes; it's true and the selection looks good. Their grab and go section, has huge hoagie sandwiches, priced at $5.99 and enough to feed two people, piled high slices of swiss and salads. Green Hills has lots of snacks, granola bars, hot sauces, a little of this and that, no beef/chicken/poultry, sparse veg and fruit, limited household and hygiene products. There is a small selection of frozen foods, where I happened to spot Little Debbie ice-cream! Be sure to check the expiration dates on products, some items I've seen had expired. This is my go to the store. It's less than half mile away. You never know what kind of inventory they're gonna have it changes weekly great place to buy deli meats best prices, and they have some really great specials. The store is clean. The clerks are friendly, and I would recommend this to almost anyone. read more

IT IS A DISCOUNT GROCERY ! Don't expect a Palace!. BUT Customer Service is #1, employees treat you like if you were VIP clients, place IS CLEAN, and fast Check out. LOVE this store! They have things I cannot find in other stores (like GROUNDED Flax Seeds). THUMBS UP. read more

Is it better? Probably not. Is it cheaper? Sometimes? Is it nice? Absolutely not. Green Hills Farm Discount Grocer is a bargain shopper's delight if you're willing to hunt for it. But if you're a one stop shopper, forget it. If you're willing to make it one of a few stops in a grocery pattern, they have a few prices that can't be beat! Pros: Well, it's starts with price. Some of their local (possibly repackaged?) meats and cheeses and fresh (deli) items really can' be beat. Incredible prices that are full dollars less than regular competitors or even the farmers' market. Sandwiches and other items were very low priced! Anything that is local or packaged/made locally appears to be a great price. It's no frills, but they do offer bags which is a surprising plus for a plus for a place with so few frills. Similarly, credit is accepted, I believe. They offer packaged groups of items at a discount which is a sort of nod to bulk shopping. Cons: Prices on traditional goods and brand names were not special and not worth the trip. Employees were non-existent (probably keeps costs low). Dates need to be watched. Oh boy, some stuff is really iffy to begin with, but I would check almost everything prior to purchase. That's frustrating, but is part of the game here. Conclusion: It's exactly what you would expect, but in Lancaster is pretty common as a means to save a few bucks. It's worth a stop if you're doing a number of grocery shopping stops, but on it's own, can't be worth it. Always check those dates! read more

My mom shops here regularly and when I am home, I often make a stop, depending on what I am looking for. For instance, I hosted a NYE party and was interest in making Charcuterie boards. Being that I was home a few days beforehand, I purchased all of my meats and cheeses here. They were all 5.99/lb or UNDER and in Pittsburgh, that is unheard of! They also have the best bologna sticks around - my husband would agree! I have purchased dry goods from here as well for decent prices. Such items include dried apricots, sprinkles, and nuts. If you are not afraid of dents in boxes or close expiration dates (do check this because every now and then they will be expired), you can find name brand products for chips, cereals, cookies, and candies. I have not tried any fruits or veggies but as with any other grocery story, I would check the quality of the produce. The employees have always been nice. Other than the cashiers and the deli workers, there are very few manning the floor if you have questions. However, the cashiers/deli employees will direct you to where you need to go or who you need to talk to about items. I love this place. The deli is by far the best part, but sometimes you can find good deals in the other sections. They always have meat and cheese specials, and delicious subs for $3.95! The staff is friendly and helpful. And you can usually find a good deal on cooper sharp cheese and select bulk items. I love popping in here when I'm in town, and shopped here regularly when I was local. Just remember cash or debit!! No credit cards! This post is totally bias based on my love for discounted cooper sharp cheese. They almost always have it on special, for WAY cheaper than Harris Teeter or Giant. Go ahead, buy it. Some good prices, but extremely rude staff. Actually, most of the staff is nice. It's the cashiers. I live within 5 minutes of two discount stores and have been driving 30 minutes to this store because the selection is much better. With a family of 5 and not being able to run to the store every few days, I like to "stock up" as some people would refer to it as, even though I see it as an acceptable amount for a family of five. I have been in this store a total of five times, as of yesterday and it will be my last. Solely because the cashier (old frumpy woman) has been plain nasty to me. It wasn't until last night I heard a young cashier say "big spender tonight" to the old woman. No one else was around and the last customer had walked out the door minutes prior to the remark (the customer had a few items.) and I can't possibly imagine how the comment could have been referenced to that customer. The treatment I have received last night and all nights prior has been disgusting and unacceptable. I've had the same woman every time, except for once when I had the young man who made the comment last night. Each time the woman would not even say a simple "hello" even when I always said "hello, how are you?" I have caught her many times staring at me like she wants to rip my head off, but then quickly goes back to doing her job when I make eye contact with her. Each time I say "thank you" and she ignores me and starts talking to the other cashier or next customer. That leads me to my next observation. I have witnessed this woman treat people kindly. She seems to be extra friendly with older men and addresses people with a smile and "hello, how are you?" Small talk followed by "you're welcome, have a nice day." She seems to be sweet as pie to other people. My daughters have already tried talking to her and she fully ignores them. My daughters are toddlers. How can you treat even kids so cruel? On one occasion, the packaging of hair clips had opened and spilled all over the scanner as she was scanning them, she did not apologize even though it was what I thought was an accident at the time, but most importantly did not say she would make sure to take it off of our bill. She simply tried ignoring it and threw all the clips into a bag. Luckily, the woman bagging caught this and said something before I could. She told the cashier she didn't think it would be fair if I paid since it wasn't my fault. The cashier tried to ignore her until I agreed and the cashier gave both of us killing looks, paused and called the manager who then told her to not charge me. Each time I leave the store bothered by how this woman treats me so unkind. I am simply a customer to her and money to the business, why and how is this acceptable? After last night, and the comment the young cashier made, I was able to put it into perspective and realized she is irritated by the amount of groceries she has to ring up. Keep in mind, I have never spent more than $180 at the store. I always have a cartful but I believe it's practical for a family of five. Last night she was the nastiest she's ever been. Oh, and after the young cashier made the "big spender tonight" comment to her, she went to hand me my change and had to suddenly cough ALL over my bills. She literally covered her mouth with the hand my bills were in. She did say "sorry" with a look of satisfaction on her face. I still said "it's okay, thank you" and she did like always and turned her back on me. There was no other customer behind me. Now, the worst part is I called into the office last night to give my complaint since after 5 consecutive times I was given the same treatment and the comment made last night, it was time. I'm assuming it was either the manager or owner (who knows, she didn't even address herself) answered, I told her everything and she had the nerve to say "well, I wonder if she doesn't talk to you because she's making sure she doesn't mess up a big order, I've already done that before." I responded with "I can understand not engaging in small talk but not even a simple greeting or response when I talk to her is not justified, customers do not deserve that treatment. Not only that, but I have only ever witnessed myself being given this treatment from her." She responded with "right, well, I will talk to her and look at the cameras." She did not sound apologetic and sounded shocked by my claims. Also, the camera comment made it seem as if my integrity was being questioned. Ultimately, good deals most times but don't buy more than a few items or else the old, frumpy woman will treat you colder than you've ever been treated by a cashier. And seniority will try to justify it!!!The savings aren't worth the treatment. Go somewhere else. Also, I had I laugh at Larrys deliverance comment. I can't say I agree that the entire staff resembles that, but I can say the mentalities sure do! read more
