Inability to get work done on time, procrastination, mild depression as a result of being unable to cope with school/ school work and constantly feeling overwhelmed were the classic ADHD symptoms that our child has faced in the last few years. As a way to support them with school work we approached Ana to see if she could help. She came highly recommended by our medical care providers and I had heard a couple of her talks. After a brief consultation with Ana, I was sure this is the type of support we needed. I am so glad we made the decision to send our child to Green Ivy. After just two sessions we observed that our child was allocating time every day for certain tasks, and had developed a sense of control over their schedule. After just a few months of Green Ivy their grades are the best they have been. Although grades were not the driver for us parents, the improvement in grades has done wonders to the fragile/developing self esteem of our teen. There is a sense of joy in going to school, learning new things at school. I have seen them get work done on Saturdays so they can spend time with friends on Sundays. Second kid....same great services!! My son recently finished their SAT prep course. He improved a lot and he was ecstatic with his score! When I was a kid, my mother seriously thought that I inherited her "bad math skills" and hired a tutor to come to our home once or twice a week after school. I was doing just fine in math, but she insisted that her "bad math genes" were passed on to me. So she hired this Chinese guy in his 50s. He had bad breath, I couldn't understand half of what he was saying, and I'm pretty sure he gave up on me at some point during Algebra lessons. I also clearly remember falling asleep one afternoon, and he pretended not to notice. That was probably the point he just waved the little white flag and realized he was still getting paid. Oh, don't tell my parents that last part. So I was asking some friends around the Peninsula for recommendations for tutoring for some relatives' kids (oh, you know those Tiger Parents..), and a few people mentioned Green Ivy. At first I was like, ummmm guys you just recommended me a 1-star place, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? Then I realized that, curiously, many of the good reviews were filtered. So I figured it would be a crapshoot, and I signed my cousin up for their services anyway. I'm seriously so glad I did, and I'm seriously super confused by the way Yelp filters things. But anyway, my cousin's middle school kids work with two different tutors (I think their names start with A) and they have nothing but good things to say. They're boys, so while they're not terrible students, they're not incredibly organized either, and their tutors make sure they bring in their planners each week (it almost reminds me of the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, where Ray creates a fake checkbook so Debra doesn't suspect anything is off). Their math grades have improved at school as well. Maybe if they keep improving at this rate, they'll get a perfect score on their SATs... or is that just wishful thinking? read more

Ana came to our kids' school to speak a few years ago, long before I needed her services. What she said made so much sense that I took copious notes assuming I'd need them one day, and subscribed to her newsletter, which I've read religiously ever since. Middle school finally hit, and I realized it was time to take advantage of the organizational workshop she offers. Even though we live in Marin and I'm sure there are plenty of people up here who do similar things, I was so familiar with Ana's philosophy that I didn't even bother to do research on them. I knew I wanted to go to Green Ivy. So we took an afternoon and drove to Los Altos (they work on Skype, too, but I liked the idea of in-person and also the idea of getting out of Dodge for an afternoon). The workshop was wonderful. Our bright but organizationally perplexed middle-schooler took away so much, and with a binder to take home and follow-up email with more notes and an evaluation from the instructor, we were able to discuss everything and come up with a plan for weekly check-ins. It felt like I was there, I learned so much. This allowed our newly minted 6th-grader to start school with a lot more confidence this week, and to not be at all confused by what the different teachers were asking them to do with their binders, workbooks, etc. The best part was when we got in the car and heard a big, "Thank you so much for enrolling me in that workshop!" Makes me want to go back to middle school. Ok, no it doesn't. But it was awesome and I highly recommend Green Ivy! read more

I worked at Green Ivy before moving out of the area for graduate school and must say that the staff is incredibly well-trained. Ana Homayoun wrote a book, That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week, all about helping students (boys specifically) who struggle with disorganization and time-management. The book has a chapter on working with students with learning disabilities, and the staff all has experience working with students with ADD/ADHD and other learning disabilities. Her book is recommended by educational psychologists to families who have students who have been recently diagnosed, and many of Green Ivy's recommendations come from local schools. Green Ivy is a wonderful place to work and to be a student. The kids genuinely enjoy coming to the office, and the staff really cares about the overall well-being of every single student. Over the course of my time at Green Ivy I would regularly experience the sight of a student entering the office with a stack of homework and leaving with a thoroughly organized binder, completed homework, a contagious smile and newly discovered confidence that we knew would translate into certain success. My experience as a student at Green Ivy was invaluable. Overwhelmed with the stress of Advanced Placement classes, SAT exams, and college applications in high school, the tutors at Green Ivy guided me through the process by giving me personal attention and support. Green Ivy is the reason I was able to attend a private university. My first experience at Green Ivy occurred during my junior year of high school while I struggled in my physics and Spanish classes. Be careful and read the qualifications of the staff on this website. They are very educated young people, but none are trained in learning disabilities. This is a purely glorified tutoring center that charges $90/hr for tutoring. If your child has ADD/ADHD/EFD or any other disability, I would suggest finding someone trained in these areas. You will get homework help here and that is it. My son attended the organization workshop as he is completely unorganized and needs a specialist in this area. The office team wouldn't even share if any of their staff was trained in dealing with severely unorganized (Executive Function Disorder) children. My son came away from the $180 workshop knowing he has to keep his binder organized, he learned some new spelling words, and he also was told not to wait to the last minute. All things he already knows but just can't do. Green Ivy requires you to sign up for a month of tutoring before they will share any of the details as to how they will help your child or you can choose to pay $180 consultation fee and ask your questions there. The place doesn't look professional and doesn't appear to be run professionally, unless you only need a tutor. read more

Green Ivy has been absolutely wonderful for my high school son! He has benefitted tremendously from a range of support and mentoring from executive functioning to planning out big projects to specific tutoring as/when needed for various courses including math, science, English and Japanese. In addition to their content and teaching expertise, Green Ivy consultants care about their students' learning and help them figure out "how to study." They help young people grow and master skills to become more independent students. I was confused when I initially saw the reviews for Green Ivy, and then realized that all of their positive reviews had been filtered - and when I clicked through to see the filtered reviews and I saw long, detailed reviews from former students and parents. I am not sure why this is happening. My children have been going to Green Ivy for six years (!). We started when the office was a few blocks away from the current location and have continued to use them throughout junior high and high school. My daughter has received help with math (pre-Algebra through now Calculus) and writing, and my son needed help with organization, time-management, and basically getting things done without waiting until the last minute and driving me nuts. The office manager, Emily, always goes out of her way to deal with my son's sports schedules and our requests, and every staff member they have worked with has been well-trained, thoughtful, and encouraging. Most of them have a graduate degree of some sort. The only thing that is sometimes challenging is they are so full that is it tough to get a 7 pm or 8 pm weeknight appointment (which my son needs because of basketball and baseball practice). As a result, we have a Sunday early afternoon time slot which works out fine and helps him plan his week. We have always had a positive experience, and my son is FAR MORE ORGANIZED than I could have ever imagined - it's possible!!! The office inviting atmosphere, and everyone seems to know the name of each student who walks in the door - impressive. I saw the owner (who is also an author) speak at the academic night at the high school a few weeks back, and she was excellent. I learned a few things, and it is clear she really cares about the well-being of her students. read more

I have 2 high school aged children that have been going to Green Ivy for the past 4 years. They have seen tutors for organization/time management assistance, homework/test review, SAT/ACT review and college guidance. The tutors are great- friendly, highly educated, and motivated. The owner is very knowledgeable in current educational topics as well as managing the college application process. The owner and the tutors truly care about helping your child reach their full potential. My son went to Green Ivy for a year and they managed to make a bad situation worse. In my son's case he was in multiple honors classes and needed help both with tutoring and with organizing himself for these classes. We thought that an agency like Green Ivy would be able to help him with both. He was matched to a young student tutor who herself was a A student and had gone to an Ivy league school. She walked through homework and study plans with him and based on the fact he was going regularly and seemed happy with the sessions we figured things were working out well. Well...at the end of the first semester we find two D's on my kids report card in the very subjects he is being tutored on at Green Ivy? Huh? When I confronted Green Ivy with these results they first told me "how are we supposed to know how he is doing? we never actually check the results of how the students do, we just work on specific materials" Huh? I thought this was relatively insane. Here we thought we were getting our son help and all we had done was to paper over the problems for semester in which he crashed and burned. Because he was going to tutoring and knew we expected this would help him he was too embarrassed to actually come back and talk to us (or the tutor) about the problems he was having. The tutor herself was way to junior to have any clue about the whole dynamic going on. Total disaster. Just when I thought it could not get any worse, I let Green Ivy know that my son's performance had dropped two grades on their watch and that I was withdrawing him from their program. The response from the owner was "well, we did everything right...maybe your son has a learning disorder? OMG! Really!? This from the woman who wrote a whole book on how to get buys with bad study habits to work more effectively? He spent a whole semester there and was give glowing reviews by his tutor and then when he fails he has some learning disorder? It was a breathtaking example of an expert throwing a student under the bus when things don't work out just the way the want/expect. No acceptance of any blame. No acknowledgement of and issues. Nothing. After this experience I would warn ANY prospective parent to steer very clear of Green Ivy unless you are going to monitor and double check you kid's progress at every stage. At least for my 15 year old that would have gone over with him like a lead balloon if we had tried, but perhaps your teenage boy is different than mine. The owner of Green Ivy will talk you ear off about her book and the last radio interview she did. Ask her when the last time she failed on a student so completely he never recovered academically. I'm not so sure she'll be so forthcoming. read more

I highly recommend Green Ivy both as a tutoring service as well as a college placement service. Both of my sons completed the Getting Ready for Middle School workshop the summers prior to middle school. It helped them see the importance of staying organized and being prepared for school. My older son used the tutoring service to help him manage and stay on top of his school work during high school and used Green Ivy to help him navigate the college process. It was the best decision we made because it allowed us to be involved as parents without having to battle the grind of high school academic, test preps, college applications, and essays writing. We plan on using Green Ivy when my younger child gets to that process. read more

My son has ADHD and really struggles with organization. I had heard good things about Green Ivy, but was not impressed. After several sessions with Green Ivy, all they had taught him to do was purchase a bunch of new binders/tabs and create binders for each class. I was floored! How can they assume that one binder system works for every kid. In the case of my son, this was a huge failure as he 1) never used all the tabs and 2) when he did the papers were lost forever as they were now 'hidden' from him. In hindsight I should have done more research and worked with an agency that has staff who are professionals and trained in ADHD. I think my son was working with a college grad who did well in school. read more

As a parent I have utilized the services of Green Ivy for the past 5 years, 2 years with an older son who is now in college in Boston, and 3 years with a younger son, now a senior in high school. The older son was diagnosed with ADHD in his sophomore year of high school. Grades were dropping precipitously as was his self-confidence. Green Ivy was recommended not as counseling for ADHD but as a tutoring service that had a track record of success with students, particularly boys with organizational and learning deficiencies. The results speak for themselves: Within a semester, his GPA rose from 2.9 to 3.6. SAT scores rose 300 points over the predicted PSAT. But much more importantly, his confidence in himself and his ability to learn was restored. There is a defined methodology that Ana Homayoun and her staff practice that has been described in the book "That Crumpled Paper . . ." It involves repetitive organizational tasks, time management, and as importantly, goal-setting. These are not behaviors that are learned by students in one organizational workshop, particularly if your student has ADHD. They must be internalized through practice. During the tutoring sessions, the students are given a very practical set of rules to follow and individualized study schedules. Eventually the students determine their study schedules on their own. I can personally attest that when the rules and schedules are followed at home, grades go up and stress goes down. Our second son did not have the attention challenges of our first son as far as we knew. But what was taught at Green Ivy was so valuable and so far beyond subject matter tutoring that we wanted him to have the same advantage. So there has never been a concern that his GPA would drop. But as an added bonus, he also had a 300 point improvement from predicted PSAT to SAT. If your student has extreme executive function challenges, this may not be the appropriate setting. A single workshop or even once per week sessions may not be sufficient to instill the behaviors for success in that case. But our experience is that Green Ivy does have a track record of success with students of all sorts of abilities and challenges. read more

We have 2 teenagers who have benefited greatly by working with Ana and the Green Ivy team since January 2021. Both attended the executive functioning skills workshop (all via zoom) and started making weekly progress raising their grades and completing missing work that had been challenging to stay on top of on their own (or with my help) during virtual learning for 10th and 8th grade. We kept our expectations realistic and loved Ana's guidance for "celebrating all the wins" during these last few months. Both of our kids have been meeting with Ana's team over the course of 3months and not only now manage their own time and workload better but also are keeping up to date on homework, tests, projects and quizzes. My son and daughter went to Green Ivy for regular tutoring, SAT prep and help with college essay writing. I am very pleased with this company and highly recommend it. My daughter was tutored for one semester in her sophomore year. She quickly learned better study habits and continues to use them today in her senior year. She also started working with Green Ivy this summer to prepare for the SAT tests. She says that it is helping a lot and really likes her tutor Anthony. My daughter is currently working with Allia on her college essay writing. She says that Allia is 'awesome' and loves working with her. I appreciate that Allia is very efficient and that my daughter is not feeling overwhelmed with her essays. My son was diagnosed with a learning disability in the 3rd grade however he was able to do very well academically until his sophomore year in high school. My son was tutored by Green Ivy from the beginning of his junior year to the end of his senior year. In the beginning, he didn't want to go but as he saw a few of his high school team mates also attending Green Ivy, he was fine with it. In fact, he would ask for an extra session or two during finals. Each week, his tutor would have him log onto the school's website and write down his homework assignments in his planner. After experiencing success, it made my son want to do better. In fact, his last semester report card of his senior year was the best one in all four years! This was a long process for him but it paid off. With the study skills that my son learned from Green Ivy, I was very happy to learn last week that he currently has a 3.7 GPA in his first semester in college while playing a Division 2 NCAA sport. My three children participated in individual one-on-one tutoring, organizational planning workshops, college planning, and summer enrichment sessions. The tutors and staff are very helpful. Our high school daughter has been going to Green Ivy for about a year. While excelling in grade school, high school was a tough transition. She has been challenged with organization and reading struggles. Green Ivy has helped her get organized to the point where we have been able to let her manage studying herself. They have given her strategies to read for learning that she actually uses. She likes going there. I hear often that the tutors are "chill". We've learned that we need to stay involved in what's happening in tutoring. It works best when we talk with her about what she has done and work with the staff to make tweaks to keep her most focused on what is helpful rather than fun. I have nothing but the highest praise for Green Ivy. After getting several recommendations from friends, we sent our daughter, then in 5th grade, to Green Ivy for math tutoring. She was struggling and as a result, did not feel confident in math and was growing to hate the subject. Fast forward three years, math is now her favorite subject. The tutors that she has had have emphasized conceptual thinking, organization and reviewing work, and this has helped her tremendously in understanding the problems that are presented to her. Though she is now doing well in her math class, I have kept her in Green Ivy because I have found that it has been helpful to review the concepts she is learning with her tutor -- the more she understands, the more confident she is and the better she does in school. I have also put my younger daughter in math tutoring and she is currently working on problems that are a little more advanced than what she is learning in class. She loves going to Green Ivy and loves that her tutor always tries to connect what they are working on to real-life scenarios. I will most likely send my younger son there as well. As far as general customer service, Green Ivy goes above and beyond. They offer tutoring in multiple subject areas as well as test prep. Recently, they designed an entire course for my older daughter to take to meet her needs. In fact, when I emailed them to ask about this, I got a call from Ana to talk to me personally and to give me different options for my daughter. I really appreciated this. Green Ivy are flexible with their scheduling as well -- if my kids have to miss a session for a particular reason, they immediately send me different options for a make-up session. My middle school daughter started coming to Green Ivy in the middle of 7th grade. She had been struggling with her organizational skills as well as study skills. After a few months she was very on top of her studies. No more late or missing assignments! Her confidence began to soar and she realized that she was capable of getting A's (she had always considered herself a B or C student). On her final report card she had almost all A's!! We think Ana Homayoun and Green Ivy deserve an A+ Both of our children (now in college) went to Green Ivy for College Counseling. Our daughter was a terrific student and very organized...but we thought that Ana could help her narrow in on what schools to apply to and make the process a lot less stressful all around. Ana helped smooth the rough roads that seem to be part of the college application process these days. Our son really benefitted as well; Ana kept him focused, motivated, and organized; his stress level went down and his confidence went up. Although it was expensive, we felt that it was totally worth it. Ana really knows both sides of the equation...the schools and her students, so she is great at helping kids identify which schools to consider and teaching them how to "wow" the admissions people in the applications and essays. We did not hire Ana to get our children into top schools, but rather to keep our family sane through the process of finding the right match. We would highly recommend the tutoring services as well. My son in particular really enjoyed going to his tutoring sessions (something that cannot be said for other tutors we had tried). From an administrative standpoint, the office is run very efficiently and our emails and questions were answered quickly. A bonus for busy families! Green Ivy is a wonderful educational support center. I first learned of it when reading the owner's (Ana Homayoun) book "That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week," which was incredibly helpful to me. The summers before each of my sons started middle school, they took a short Getting Ready for Middle School workshop, which transformed the way they thought about school and how they organized their schoolwork. My oldest son tutored with Lawrence twice a week during middle school and did test prep with Danny for the HSPT during his 8th grade year. My daughter worked with Green Ivy her freshman year of HS to get some help with geometry. She met great success working with Green Ivy, not just in math but also in learning what her organizational style is like and how to support it. I was also impressed by the staff in that they all seemed to have such good connections with the students and the director, Ana, always knew each student's name! This is my son's 3rd year at Green Ivy and I can't say enough about how happy we are with the services. After a very tumultuous 7th grade experience, my son was diagnosed with several learning differences and we were advised to consult an executive function coach. We had just moved from the East Coast and lucked into finding Green Ivy. Initially, my son relied on Green Ivy mainly for help with organization, prioritization, and getting his homework done (without the need for us to nag him anymore!). He went from nearly failing 7th grade to straight A's in 8th grade. Green Ivy also helped with ISEE prep (he benefited especially from the essay prep) and, as he transitioned into high school, he now also relies on his tutor for subject matter support. He's been lucky to have the same tutor for the 3rd year now and he really likes him and trusts him to help him tackle advanced math and sciences. As parents, we really appreciate having someone else follow our son's progress who can push him to continually improve. My son is much more willing to take constructive feedback and advice from his tutor than from his parents. My three kids have been working with Green Ivy for over four years. We have used Green Ivy for HSPT prep, organizational workshops, general tutoring, SAT prep and college counseling. You name it, we've utilized it. Ana has connected with my high school son in a way I never expected. He was not really applying himself to the best of his ability, struggled with managing social media while studying, etc. She convinced him to go to the library every night without his phone and have a specific study period. She also was able to convince him to change his other study habits, something we had been unable to accomplish. She's been a cheerleader for him too, encouraging him to explore his strengths on campus, and challenge himself. My other kids have used tutors to help them in classes they struggled with. My daughter loves her tutor and found that she was helpful across multiple subjects, explained things in a way she could understand them. My third child used his tutor to help him get organized for the week, and work on whatever needed to get done - mostly his trouble areas so that I wasn't doing as much of that at home. Took the burden off of me. Whenever anything has come up of issue, Ana has been quick to jump in and help in whatever way she could. I highly recommend Green Ivy. The tutors and staff have worked with my two children, and they've played a critical role in supporting my children's educational development. Green Ivy first worked with my daughter, a now twenty-something who has graduated from college and successfully entered the workforce. During high school she learned organizational and study skills, and received tutoring in subjects as needed, from Green Ivy. In addition, Green Ivy assisted her (and her parents) in navigating the college application process, from helping her identify a spectrum of universities that were good fits to assisting her with applications. The skills that she learned over the course of her tutoring were not only instrumental to her succeeding in high school, but they also were key in her college success; without that foundation college would have been significantly more difficult. She continues using those organizational skills today. My 15 year old son began tutoring with Green Ivy last fall, as he was struggling a bit to manage the rigors of a college prep high school. Within a short period of time he became better organized and prepared, his grades became more consistent, and his confidence significantly improved. He loves working with his tutor, who not only is teaching skills that will help him throughout his education but who also is a strong, positive role model. I fully expect that my son will continue working with Green Ivy throughout high school, and that, like my daughter, he'll enter college with a strong academic foundation and with the skills needed to effectively manage his college career. read more

My son (senior at MVHS) is a good writer but was struggling with the unstructured 500 word essays needed for college apps which are so different than the typical essays the kids are taught to write at school. I had heard about Green Ivy from other friends so called them to see if they could help. We only wanted the essay editing help and no other consulting. They were happy to squeeze us into their schedule. Abby, the tutor, gave my son such great input and worked with him to advise what would bring his essays to life and asked the right questions to get him to create a better story. This helped him to make the essays more personal and fun to read. She DID NOT write or edit them for him--just asked the right questions and shared what makes a good college essay. He was a bit of a skeptic before attending the first session but was immediately impressed with Abby and her suggestions to help make his common app resume and essays better. He hit send on the Common App yesterday, a full 11 days ahead of the ED deadline which was definitely due to the work he did with Abby. Thank you! read more
