Buyer beware. I had a sprinkler system put in several years ago. It was not made clear at the…read moretime that I had to have a plumbing inspection. Recently I had a plumbing job done in my house. The inspector told me I had an open inspection for the irrigation system. Upon inspection the job failed because the wrong type of pipe (regular PVC which the inspector said doesn't now and never did meet code) was used as a pressure water line from my main in the basement to the outside of my house. The clamps to hold the line up also did not meet code. (They were only appropriate for vertical, not horizontal applications.) I spoke to the company owner who made every excuse from the inspector not knowing what he was talking about to blaming the plumber who he didn't have contact with any longer. When I asked for some help with the $800 bill to replace the pipe - possibly the name of his current plumber who might give me a better price, splitting the bill or a break on winterizing for a few years I got nothing. Be warned that if you live in Hamilton I've been told that the open inspections have been computerized so if you need an inspection on a new job or try to sell your house, open inspections will be flagged. ProTurf will continue to take your money for repairs and maintenance but in my experience, they won't stand behind their work.

I would give him more stars for those years of good service, except for how he let me down at the end. BTW, this cost me over $400 in permits from the township and additional inspections and over 40 hours of my time because he chose to provide NO help or advice on how to resolve this with the township. Since it was 28 years ago from the initial job, I understand he may have though that he had no obligation to remedy the item. I was not expecting a remedy or even payment, only help in the permit process.

When they activated the my sprinklers earlier this season, they told me that I needed a new filter--when the service person realized he didn't have the part in the truck, he told me that I actually don't need the filter replaced. If you are looking for routine yard maintenance or if you are focused on a competitive budget, I would suggest you tread carefully. We were privately contracted with Doerler for several years when we terminated our relationship. Despite oral assurances that plantings would be guaranteed for a year, documentation in writing, and accompanying photographs of poor maintenance all copied or directed to the President and owner of the company, Steve Doerler, the organization failed to recognize any issues, fulfill its commitments or live up to its professional assurances. The lapse was not worth a lot of money in the scheme of things, especially given the monthly/annual fees, so the failure says a lot more about the organization and its culture than the money would suggest.

When I first came in contact with Down To Earth, I was very impressed. Chris and I took a tour of the community, and he pointed out all the things wrong with the current landscaping company. I recommended to our board that we hire Down to Earth, and they took my recommendation and a contract was signed. Initially, their performance was impressive. Looking back, I'm not sure if this was a matter of them being good, or our former landscaping people being so bad. Be that what it is, winter came around, and with it, the only significant snowfall of the year. The response of DTE was underwhelming at best. It seemed like they were grossly undermanned to handle to storm. After the storm, they had a crew of about 3 or 4 people to handle the whole development. That was far from enough. While neighboring communities were completely cleared in a day, it took DTE 3 days to get the job done, and that was with many residents plowing themselves out. What's more, while shoveling the sidewalks, several areas throughout the development were damaged. This shouldn't have been a big deal, but a year later, despite numerous complaints to management, the damage was never fixed. Also, DTE employees used a tractor to cut grass behind our building. They did so, despite the area being wet. This created a big tire rut. Again, I have notified management several times, and even tried writing to DTE, but was never given the courtesy of a response. Meantime, DTE employees have continued to ride over the rut, making it bigger and deeper. No common sense. One of the problems with living in a development like this, is the fact you have no idea what the board is telling the contractor. As I look around the development, I see much the same that I did before we hired DTE. Weeds are a big problem, there are big patches of dead areas, and the general condition of the landscaping is just "ratty" looking. I was also surprised to see that the yearly seeding seemed to consist of throwing seed around with no rhyme or reason. They didn't even aerate the grounds. I'm very disappointed with this company.
