Boston's Green Line is the oldest train line in America, dating back to 1897. The B branch of the line is the northernmost of the three lines that split west of Kenmore. It travels down the middle of Commonwealth Avenue (aka Comm Ave) and ends at Boston College. There are 24 stations on the Green Line, which runs about six miles. A full run at a normal time will take about 45 minutes. Busier times are close to an hour. During rush hour, the trains run often but not often enough. It gets way too crowded. I've skipped boarding trains at Boylston for 20 minutes until there was enough room for me to squeeze on. Fortunately, I don't have to commute in Boston because this would suck. I'm sorry, fellow riders! And as for the riders, I do see the occasional dude offer his seat to a more senior rider. This doesn't happen often enough, especially when the sign says right there that the seat is reserved for handicapped or elderly! For the love of Pete, if I had to take this train everyday, I am pretty sure I would development a serious twitch from having to listen to that incessant ringing bell clamoring on and on throughout the entire miserable stop-and-go journey. I don't know if people have gotten used to the dinging or if they've lost their hearing, but it's a form of pure torture to my ears and a threat to my sanity. This is how they should punish people who break the law, forcing them to ride back and forth in rush hour traffic from Blanchard to Boston College on the B Line, ringing that bell whole time. Pros: -As a Boson College/Boston University/Allston-Brighton resident, the B-line train is the lifeline of getting ANYWHERE in and out of the city -If this train did not exist, Allston-Brighton would implode and Uber would own BC & BU -A great place for college kids to socialize and scope out the opposite sex/gender -Instead of grumpy/inconsiderate middle aged commuters and entitled millennials, you get chatty college kids who are more endearing (although equally as entitled) -Cuts down on BU traffic (which is already bad enough) Cons -It's miserably slow, making it the most despised of the Green Line itinerary. -There's a stop every 100 yards, which is the reason for its slowness and constantly opening doors -Since it not only serves commuters - but students - it can get packed at random times - making traveling on it a game of Russian roulette -Like all B-line trains, it's actually a rattling/rickety above ground trolley that was built at the beginning of time read more

So I'm going to try and say something positive after every negative thing I say about it. - It is slower than a dead snail. + If you want to take in scenic comm Ave, this is great! - Have you seen those videos of trains in Japan where they have conductors forcefully cramming passengers into the train? The B line is worse. + If you're a creepy train groper - you'll never get caught on the B line! - It comes every 20 minutes sometimes, every 2 minutes other times + Oh the excitement! Am I going to wait 2 minutes in the freezing cold rain, or 20? - It shuts down at 1 AMish + You know what, beer has lots of calories. After a long night of drinking, a good couple mile walk home is great! Better yet? Drunk running. Seriously. Try it. - It often goes express mode, but always after the BU stops that are 5 feet apart, bypassing all the stops that are actually reasonable distances apart. + If you never check out other stops on the green line, this is your big chance!!! read more

The B Line makes puppies and kittens cry. It's arguably the most overcrowded mess of the four MBTA Green lines. Filled with various college kids, young professionals, and other random people, it traverses the line between Boston College heading past BU and into Boston proper, stopping every once in awhile to let people out and stop for traffic. I could complain about people taking the line from BU West to Central, but I've been known to take the T from Kendall to Charles-MGH, so I can't complain. The traffic part is a little annoying. If I wanted to wait in traffic in an MBTA vehicle, I'd take a bus. At least then there's a chance I get a seat, or have fewer elbows in my face. I understand that the way the system is set up makes the aboveground version more conducive, but the C, D, and E aren't nearly this bad in terms of constant stopping. The already herky-jerky nature of the Green Line is exacerbated by this whackjobbery, leading to constant stop and go traffic, lateness, and other annoying things that one wouldn't necessarily expect from a subway line. As I was coming home from the North Shore one night after a very long day (worked all day then went to Salem State for a GIS class which taxed every single one of my brain cells), about 5,000 BU students boarded the train at Blanford Street. They squished in, and a girl stood with her backside to me, the crack of her ass aligning unpleasantly with my eyes. The horrible mysogynists she was with were very loud, and then they started doing the rendition of "Mockingbird" from Dumb and Dumber--loud, off-key, drunken yah-doodery at it's very worst. I nearly had a homicidal episode. It was at this moment that I resolved never to use to B-line as soon as I was out of school. Unless I'm going to the airport, I will walk to the mile to the C-line or I will just walk. Tomorrow I have the day off and am going to get some beauty stuff done at Beaucage on Newbury. It takes me an hour to walk...I will definitely be walking. It's twofold less stressful - I avoid the slow, gurning pace of the train packed with miserable commuters and oblivious college students, and I get some exercise which is naturally de-stressing. I imagine it would be cheaper for the MBTA to remove some of the stops on the B-line. The trains would run faster so you would actually need fewer of them. Despite my tendency to defend to MBTA, I must admit that efficiency isn't their strong suit. I mean, BU East?! Contrary to what you would expect the function of a transit line to be, do not actually use this thing to get places. I have been on a B train and watched the 57 bus zoom by with nary a care. I have taken the Red Line to the 66 bus from downtown to access Allston just because the B branch is such a pain in the ass. I used to be an atheist, but I'm a believer now; swiping your Charlie Card on the B branch buys you a one-way ticket straight to Hell. If I could make the B branch of the Green Line case to exist through sheer force of will, believe me, it would be naught but a smoking crater by now. It stops. Every. Few. Feet. It has to wait for traffic lights. It gets in traffic accidents. It get stuck in traffic. Jesus Christ on a stick, can we stop and marinate on that for a while? A train -- getting stuck in car traffic. And this isn't even the E branch, whose tracks actually do take it onto the pavement! While you're busy not going anywhere, gaggles of BU students -- who look either like they're turning tricks or like they should still be in high school, or both -- tromp on and off. Slowly. The thump of their Uggs drones on and on as you watch the precious green light turn back to red, dooming you to another minute-long wait before the train can start the six foot trek to the next stop. If you'd gotten off to walk, you could be there by now... but you're stuck in here with *them* now. Their gum smacks in the air, piercing your sanity. Their banal conversations numb you to the reality of life. You begin to seriously weigh the time it will take to reach your destination against the 30-to-life you would get for strangling one of them. Okay, you want constructive criticism? Fine. It's a piece of crap. Oh, that's not constructive? Fine. They need to lose the grade crossings or get rid of about half of the stops on this thing. That would improve it about 500%. Aww, let's not be so harsh to the sad little B line! While the B line above all Green Line trains is prone to getting stuck in traffic, that's basically what happens with all trolleys. And certainly the BU/BC students are less shady than some of the more earthy types on the other lines. Plus, if you skip the MP3 player, you can overhear some really hilarious out-of-context quotes. I like the B train because it takes me all of the places I want to go, but isn't stinky like the 57 bus. And since I've been riding the B line excessively these past few years, I've realized that you just have to be Zen about it. The B line mostly- mostly- does what it is supposed to do, which is get you to where you're going. Some days, T karma is on your side, and you a nice, empty B train pulls into the station immediately with a perfect single seat waiting just for you. Other days, you wait 15 minutes for a jam-packed train and have to squish in while it slowly putt-putts its overstuffed self down Comm Ave, only to make you get off because it's running express to BC and there are 3 empty trains right behind it. I've only done a few reviews on here and want to start doing more. So I was just thinking of scaling my ratings because I can't think of a single place where I've had a 1 star experience. I was thinking to myself "is everything going to be 2+ stars? I mean I just gave a Subway 4 stars." Then it hit me - the subway. So bad. There's not much they can do about it either, it's bad by design. 1) There are way too many stops and it has to flow with traffic. I get on at Quint Street and there have been times where I miss the train, see that it stopped at Harvard Avenue, take a speed-walk gamble, and make it. I've been wanting to use the phrase speed-walk gamble my entire life, man that felt good. The worst area is all along BU. It's stop city right there. I'm curious if I can win a race on a Segway from Packard's corner to Blandford Street. Actually, I really really want to do that right now...BAH nevermind. I just checked amazon, Segways are $6300. I was hoping they were like $50. FOR SHAME. 2) The train is above ground. This means traffic on the outside of the train and traffic on the inside of the train. By that I mean everyone has to enter through the front door. For some odd reason people love to walk halfway up the train and stop there. The front half of the train is always crowded and the back half is always spacious. Maybe it smells back there or something? I wouldn't know, I can never make it back there. OK, I'm done with the hate. Just avoid the B line if you can. I sure do, you'll find me on the 57 bus, and if not that then on a poor man's Segway (Razor scooter). read more

I have to say that this is the worst of the lines. It is packed all the time, almost without exception. Fortunately I take the C line (truly is a lovely experience in comparison to the B line). There are some economics behind some of this. The B line services tens, if not hundreds of thousands of students. It's truly amazing. BC, BU, music schools, and then some. The fact is undergrads, which I was once upon a time, are fun as hell to be around, but they tend to be rude, dirty and sick (in terms of health). It was the best time of my life (college..), but I would never want to slammed in a train filled with undergraduates before and after WORK. The day is long enough ;) This doesn't include all of the non-students, which I've never had a bone to pick with. We're all just surviving (some even living!), and dealing with 18-22 year olds after a full day of work takes immense patience and maturity (traits I lose by 5:30pm). I have lived on the B Line for over three years. And, I'm sad to report, not much has changed in that time. The best B Line experiences that I have had were either between 7am and 8am or ultra-early in the morning. (I once got on at 5:30am to go to Logan Airport for an early flight. The train was almost empty and it breezed by most of the surface stops, and I thought it was kind of cool to see most of Boston still asleep.) The worst B Line experiences that I have had have been between 8am and 9am and late on Friday nights. Either the train will blow by my station without stopping, or it will try to let more people on than can possibly fit. I'm thinking the DOT would run out of ink on their red pens if they came and saw what we were doing in terms of safety and overcrowding. I am lucky that I work in the area of Hynes / Copley, so that if a train ahead just craps out, I can get off at Blandford and walk 20 minutes. The clientele varies. Late weekend nights are always the worst. And even during the day, I see plenty of young, fit, able-bodied riders taking up seats. When an elderly or disabled person gets on the train, those riders tend to bury their heads deeper in their books or turn their iPods up. Now, I am aware that manners are by no means universal, but it's just common courtesy to give your seat to someone who needs it more. Selfishness abounds on the B Line (and the Green Line in general). Phoenix has a similar trolley system, and even though it's 110 degrees there, they seem to run it pretty well. When I was moving here from Pittsburgh and was reading all the terrible reviews of the T, I thought, "There's no way it can be that bad. Pittsburgh's is bad enough." No. It's that bad. I don't really understand how a major city's public transportation could be this ass-backwards, or why they don't see the need to add more B line trains to the schedule. If you look at the MBTA ridership and service statistics (see below) you will see that usage of the B line is more than double the C line and double that of the E line. Yet why can't the MBTA provide more cars for the B line especially during the AM and PM rush hour commute? During cold and flu season while everyone is sardined together into the two tiny cars everyone is forced to share germs. This morning a person coughed mutliple times down the back of my neck. I felt the spray of her saliva sitting on my neck but could not wipe it off or even turn around to give her a stern look because there is no possible way to move in the slightest during the rush hour cram. Since riding the B line I have gotten sick twice now and it is only October, not yet the height of cold and flu season which is dec/jan. Last year I got sick just once. The B train on the Green Line is the greatest folly of civil engineering in the 21st century. Twice a day, I am forced to meditate on this gross and blatant mismanagement of municipal resources. Where to begin? First, the MBTA is split into separate transit lines represented by colors. You'll recognize the red line from Good Will Hunting. There is also the Green, Orange, Blue, and Silver. 5 lines servicing greater boston. The Green line runs East to West, and mostly South of the Charles river. This is where it gets interesting. This ONE service line then splits, yes, splits into no less than FOUR SEPARATE LINES. You heard that correctly. You may ask, "but how do they manage to coordinate FOUR different trains sharing one track?" The answer is they don't. You see, the Green line splits into four letters: B, C, D, and E. The E is the "pinky" of the Green line. It splits off early and carries a fraction of the number of passengers the other three does. The D train services areas almost as secluded as the E train, but not as much. It's moderately used. The C train is relatively busy, to be sure, but that busyness has remained relatively consistent over the years. And then we have the B. The dreaded B. All of Boston's brain power means essentially nil as long as the B line exists. Point being, you have four different lines sharing one track. Even in a perfectly balanced world, you would still be waiting on the platform, watching three other trains pass by so that the fourth, your train, can show up. But it's not a perfectly balanced, which brings me to my second point. The train that bears the greatest burden has no extra cars. This is perhaps the greatest insult to the tax payers of Boston. Of the four lines, the B train is far and away the most integral line to the Western side of Boston. First, you're servicing all of Boston University. Have you heard of this school? You have. That ENTIRE student body uses the B train. But wait, have you heard of Boston College? Yes, you have. Berklee School of Music?! THEY all use the B train as well. There is another MBTA line that actually services more schools, and that's the RED line. That's an entire line that runs North to South and services Harvard, MIT and Umass Boston. An entire line for three colleges. The B train is a quarter of the Green line. Is this hitting home yet? One quarter = ¼ = .25 = 25% of the Green line. It gets worse. Since real estate in Boston is absurdly expensive (small city, lots of people want to live in it), the only place for college kids, young adults, new professionals, and pretty much anyone under 40 that hasn't sold their soul to finance or healthcare, can only afford to live on the B train. So this entire demographic of Boston are all standing on the platform, of one line, waiting for one out of four trains to take them home. Third, the B train, and the rest of the Green line, services BOSTON PROPER. Wait, what? Yeah. The MAIN ****ing line of Boston IS THE GREEN LINE. But wait Nomnom, wouldn't the city KNOW that the main transit line that runs through the HEART OF ****ING BOSTON needs more attention than the other three colors combined? They do not. You've heard of Copley? Prudential? Fenway? Boston Garden (or whatever absurd name it's called now due to corporate ownership)? These are all on the B train. Yes folks, when the RED SOX PLAY, EVERYONE TAKES THE GREEN LINE! Actually, if I'm being precise, everyone takes the B, C, or D train to Fenway, as the E splits off early and doesn't make it to Fenway. Omg, I'm laughing. This is actually pretty comical. I digress. Fourth, the B line sees the heaviest use and doesn't receive any special attention. The B line experiences more delays than any other transit system I know of in North America. It is a complete and utter gamble to take the B train for your morning or night commute. It will take you 1 hour to travel 3 miles. Then why don't you WALK/BIKE Nomnom?! Because it's BOSTON! Have you HEARD of our weather? Yeah, enjoy walking/biking 3 miles in the Winter. Call me when you get out of the hospital. Ok, but what about the design of the train cares themselves? They must be the most revolutionary, efficient trains on the planet. Nope. Problem number 5 starts around 6 or 7 years ago when the MBTA did purchase new trams for the Green line. The new trains had a distinctly Japanese build about them. It felt and looked like a newer, brighter future. Then you rode in one of these trains. Besides two small areas, there was no way to safely stand in the middle of the train. See, typically, when one rides public transit, one must hold on for dear life in order to counter the trials and tribulations of Boston's infamous "cow paths" (it's historical, look it up). Well, ladies and gents, the genius behind the design of the open B train left this wide open space WITH NOTHING TO HOLD ONTO. Yes, that's right. No hand holds. If you haven't written a review before, 1 star is as low as it goes. There's a reason for it. The B line is overcrowded, mismanaged, dirty, smelly, and never runs on time. If you rely on it, the B line will screw you over at some point (that's even optimistic -- it will screw you over at many points). The one thing that possibly make the 1 start justified (as opposed to the zero stars that I would like to leave) is that the T has a take it to the top policy. So, you can call and complain, and if you experience ridiculously bad T service you should. In case you're wondering, the number to call is 617-222-3200. (To get a human, enter 1, 3, 1.) Great to know that ridership on the T in general is up - Hooray! Unfortunately that metric failed to spark action on the already way-overcrowded B line trains on the Green line. Why can't the MBTA come up with a solution for this problem - are they still slapping themselves on the back for the silver line and greenbush lines? Why not add some extra trains on an overutilized track? Why not anticipate special events and add extra trains? Why not have dedicated BU and BC wagons to take the kids out of the commuter pool? Whoever it was that dubbed Boston "the walking city" obviously never tried to take the B line from Kenmore to Sutherland Rd. In addition to the 16 or so stops the train made in what couldn't have been more than a 2.5 mile radius, it also stops at every single stoplight. You're better off walking - you can cover the same distance in the same amount of time, and you'll get some exercise. read more

Christine Cassino Supervisor, Green Line Garth S. 01/07/07 9:18 AM To Whom This May Concern: About noon yesterday, I was standing in the pedestrian crossing that intersects the streetcar tracks at Commonwealth Avenue and Warren Street. Trains were stopped at both the inbound and outbound stations. The crosswalk at Warren Street does not contain a sidewalk or a curb so pedestrians are forced to stand in the middle of the tracks to wait for trains and cars to pass. I was waiting for the outbound train to pass so I could get across the street when the driver of the inbound train finished picking up his passengers and started driving towards me. Instead of waiting for me to get across the tracks, he continued moving and intentionally blew his horn at me, knowing there was nowhere for me to go. I couldn't cross the tracks because the outbound train had started up. My only option, because it was clear that the train would not stop, was to step back into Commonwealth Avenue and into the path of oncoming traffic. Fortunately I was not hurt but the reckless indifference of your MBTA driver could have been the cause of a dangerous accident. I have a hard time believing that this is how MBTA drivers are trained. I was not in a position to get the train's number but at the least I expect an apology from the MBTA and assurances that streetcar drivers will be reminded not to intentionally assault pedestrians. Terrible line, gets you where you need to go but only moderately faster than walking.

Far better than the average 2 star rating it got. I like it for being very convenient and mostly reliable as well - sometimes you might have to wait a little longer, but in the end the B line always comes. It's not the fastest way to get downtown, but definitely more comfortable than the bus and cheaper than a cab. read more

Same as my review of the whole green line. There needs to be more capital investment in the equipment, later train service but gets the job done, just make sure you not in a rush to get there. read more

I am surprised with all of the one stars. Yes it is slow and a few stops could be cut out, but I rarely wait more than 5, 10 minutes max for a train on this line. After the few really close together ones around BU, it becomes much better spaced out going towards BC. I find that in general the trains are only overcrowded during evenings 5 to 7ish, and the rest of the time there is breathing room, if not seats. Honestly, I have been riding this for three years and I really don't feel its as bad as everyone is making it out to be. read more

I feel like I am going to combust whenever I am waiting on the B line. Packard's Corner is a complete nightmare. I stopped taking this line in the morning because I was always late and thought taking the 66 bus would make my commute easier (yeah, right). This line is consistently packed and late. I am moving just so that I can have an easier commute to work, it's that bad. Good riddance! read more

Pretty much ditto everyone else's complaints: the operators are lousy, the BU students are offensive, people routinely block the doorway, and it runs on no particular schedule and without any good sense. As a working commuter I would be out of luck without it, but the organization of this line makes little or no sense. The summers are nicer, to be fair. I dread September first, when the iPod & ironic t-shirt hoard descend again. Shouldn't BU include a "Manners When Riding the T" session in their orientation? read more

Cant get any worse than this. They need to get rid of some stops. This T line literally stops every 100 feet!

Ignoring the absurdity of reviewing public transit on a website mainly dedicated to food and entertainment, it is perhaps the only civilized act of revenge I can ever muster at the MBTA. I want my hate to be manifest and sit disgustingly on display for all to see. I've lived on the orange line, red line and now the green line (B), and never have I been so tortured on a daily basis as I am now. I predominately use the B train to get to and from work, and as a bartender, my commuting hours don't subject me to the typical flux of commuters; rather, I find myself waiting in blizzards during off-peak hours, snow gathering on my convulsing body, being slowly torn apart by the mixture of cold and my hatred for the B train. From the hours of 8pm till eternity on Thursday through Saturday, the B train turns into a sad statement on the state of American universities. As a person that works a job with odd hours, I cannot escape riding the train at this time. Think of the craziest mosh pit you ever foolishly jumped into, now compact that mosh pit into a sardine can, the music replaced by the childish hoots and screams of people experiencing the thrill of being drunk for the first time -- "yay, what fun, total abandonment -- fuck you for making me play cello in high school, mom and dad!" That's right my commute on weekend nights consists of drunk imbeciles piling like lemmings in a frenzy -- the green line the cliff, Allston Village the basin-as-graveyard. I sit, stoically, gritting my teeth, but a single tear falls in hopelessness as bro-dudes shout overtly sexist, racist, cliched bullshit that carbon copy banshees squeal in delight over. Another shitty experience: the B line rides through to the Blandford street stop, the first stop above ground. "We apologize for the inconvenience but this train is out of service due to lightning hitting the track. Please exit to wait for shuttle buses." They throw a full rush-hour train to the elements when there is a hailing (real hail, no hyperbole here) thunderstorm to stand outside on Comm ave for a shuttle bus that will both never come and never have enough room for the number of people waiting. Did they really out of fear of lightning striking the train send a full train's worth of people outside to wait with no cover in a thunderstorm? I proceed to wait 10 minutes, realizing it was fruitless, I walked down Comm ave for half an hour in 40 degree weather, hail, and lightning striking within bone-jarring distance. Never once did I see a shuttle bus or green line train pass me until I got home. I won't go on because the point is made. All the other countless sins public transit is guilty of the B train is the king sinner, but as most of you ride the MBTA I'm sure in some shape or fashion, I don't need to go into detail on the more mundane.
