You would think that because Boston is a booming metro area in the well established New England area, that its public transportation system would be top of the line. You would be very wrong. This line is a cancer that keeps growing and causing problems for everyone that uses it. The amount of times incompetence has caused people to miss busses and appointments is unbelievable. This sees to be a consistent line I travel whenever I am in town. The stations are usually pretty quick to use to grab a ticket, hop the train and hop off. I ride alone a lot and have never felt out of sorts or like there are sketchy people around. I am coming from a traveler's perspective so I do not have deal with the daily commuter factors but as such, this is one of those lines I feel confident grabbing consistently and like it will get me from point A to point B with no issues. read more

I spent most of my college years on the Red Line between Park Street and the Red Line (heading to Harvard Square, but not the University itself) and it honestly has not changed much in the last thirty years. Yeah, they extended it and that made it nice to be able to get all the way to Alewife to meet my friends who live in the northern suburbs. And it helped to get all the way down to Braintree to meet up with friends down that way. The Mattapan Trolley is pretty slick, too. The trains run both above ground and under ground. They are very old, a little beat up, the speakers and automated announcements on board aren't always intelligible. The trains sometimes get stuck. One nearly fell off the tracks this year. Wait, I was trying to stay nice things. When they run, the trains run well. The audible and visual announcements on the platforms are easy. The Red Line tracks run 22 stops on two branches, splitting at JFK/UMass to either Ashmont or Braintree. From Alewife in Cambridge down to Braintree is 17.5 miles. In the year that I have been here in Boston, I have had the opportunity to visit each Red Line station. The urban ones like Park Street and Downtown Crossing, the very suburban ones like Shawmut and Fields Crossing, and the very old underground stations like Harvard and Kendall. Visited the Boston area a little over a month ago. I was staying in Waltham so I found the Red Line to be a very convenient public transportation option. The Red Line runs from Alewife Station in Cambridge to downtown Boston. The line then splits off into two different lines after JFK/UMass Station going to stations in Braintree and Dorchester. It was really easy taking the Silver Line from Logan Airport to South Station. Once there, I just need to take the stairs to reach the train platform for the Red Line. There was no need to exit the station. Since both iterations of the Red line go towards Alewife, I found the waiting time to be short. Didn't wait more than 10 minutes for a train. The Red trains were not too packed on the weekends. Fortunate since I was lugging a carry-on bag around. I was quite pleased with Boston public transportation when I visited as I found it to be quick and easy to use. I did also like that I could use my cell in the station, which is not possible in the downtown Seattle tunnel stations as there is no access. If you are visiting the Boston area for a few days or more, I definitely recommend getting the 7 day pass which is only $19. That isn't much more than the 1 day pass which is $12. The pass will pay for itself after a couple days. If you need to get to Cambridge quickly from downtown Boston, I recommend taking the Red Line as it runs frequently and is fast. This is particularly a good train to take if you need to get to Harvard or MIT as there are Red Line stations nearby to these institutions. read more

This line isn't as evil as some folks would be lead to believe. It's still on par with the other trains, if not more reliable, and hits a part of town every commuter should have access too. Yes, there are delays, and more often than not, the smell of piss lingers from late nights of unmonitored public drizzle fests, but there is never the less a certain charm about the red line. Is it the color? Could my Asian roots be culturally bound to the color red? It's the line. The route hits up Chinatown, Boston Common, South Station, and Harvard. In fact whenever first time visitors ask me how to use the subway / trains, I always mention the red line for it's no brainer route for anything worth checking out for beantown first timers. Plus all of the stations along the line are usually clean and less sketchy than the others. Seats are usually available after rush hour (hard to say for the other lines) and it's ironically not as crowded as one would think in the mornings. Few public transportation organizations are perfect (I have to deal with the MTA in New York) and while the MBTA is no exception, they have done well with the Red Line. read more

What? Your subway isn't 24 hours? WHAT? Okay, I might come across as a spoiled New Yorker when someone told me (much to my disbelief) that only about four cities actually have 24/7 subways. First of all, how do you get around after a late night escapade consisting of bar-hopping and gallivanting around town in your drunken glory? Luckily, my friends and I walked/got driven around quite a lot, so I didn't have to worry much. The Red Line was scenic enough, but it was down right gritty. Sticky stains on the ground, pieces of paper/lint/paper-like things on the seats, a nauseating smell permeating the air. Maybe it was just our luck that we got a rather horrible compartment, but it did the job getting us from Harvard Square Station to Charles/MGH. I had a little trouble with the CharlieCard because when I swiped, that stupid thing ate my money and as I was about to cry because I didn't want to pay another 2-dollars-or-whatever for another ride when I didn't get one, some sweet MBTA lady opened the gate for me and let me through. Thanks, lady! After reading some of these reviews, if the Red Line is the best that Boston has to offer, in terms of subway lines...well, let's just say I'm glad to be a New Yorker. Sorry, Bostonians. You might have won me over with delicious brunches and a bunch of history, but you're not fooling me. read more

I've been using the Red Line since I got to Cambridge for a month-long stay. I also used it almost every day from Braintree to downtown almost every day back in 2003. I like it. The other day, I rode in what was obviously a car with freshly shampooed seats. It even smelled clean. Not many busy urban transit systems can sport that. Riding the Red Line is an exercise in people watching and a trip through a socio economic and demographic experiment. As it leaves Cambridge, it is trés Yuppie and full of Birkenstocks, Abercrombie and American Eagle with standard American English or Brahmin spoken. The closer to downtown, the clientele changes to a more blue collar and the speech gets a bit more "Southie", even the clothes are different. Riding towards Andrew, it gets "Dorchestery" and so do the people. Then towards Quincy and Braintree, it again changes to its Irish and Italian brogues. Made me think of the Red Line in Washington with its counterpart demographic changes as it travels from Grosvenor to downtown DC and then up Silver Spring... The T Red line was a quick and pleasant Sunday trip to downtown. My only hope is that someday they will put WiFi or ATT reception on the underground so the tourist can follow it on a GPS. My only chance to orient myself on a map was on the Longfellow Bridge. Solid, clean, and fun. read more

I don't use the Red Line much. I try for never, but occasionally I give it a shot and I always wish I hadn't. The problem is simple - nothing works and nothing's on time. I'm familiar with NYC subways, the Tube in London, and the Metro in Paris. Boston can't compare. Maybe the city just isn't big enough to support a working mass transit system, maybe I just pick the wrong days to try it. I don't know. But when I'm in Boston, I try to walk a lot. The best view of Boston can be seen from the MBTA Red Line - between Charles MGH and Kendall Sq stops. As the train crosses the salt and pepper bridge, you'll have an unobstructed view over the charles river - one side of the train facing Boston and the other side facing Cambridge. I highly recommend that tourists check out the view. When you're a local you notice how many people don't look up and notice the awesome view. read more

Clean, fast, efficient. However I do have three gripes.. #1. My friend was carrying her baby and NO ONE offered her a seat. Shame on you Boston. #2. The fire alarm sound as the train was about to pull away from the first station... good lord. #3. The operating hours are so short. I had to catch a 6am train to NYC and instead of paying for a commuter ride, had to shell out $45 for a cab. THAT sucked. read more

Attention Red Line passengers we are experiencing unusually long delays has become quite common. Add snow, ice and a little storm warning and you have longer than wanted delays. I won't blame the staff. I won't even blame the antiquated system. I'd like to speak to the person who decides that even though Boston has declared a snow emergency thinks the trains will work? The Red Line and I have a sort of love-hate relationship. But I can't imagine living anywhere else in Boston- the Red Line covers all the best places. Davis, Porter, Harvard, Central, Kendall, Beacon Hill, downtown. As an added bonus, on weekday mornings, my bitterness towards having to go to work is usually tempered by the gorgeous view off the Longfellow Bridge. And while it gets packed during rush hour and trains seem to break down often (once I got stuck on the Longfellow bridge and the train behind us had to push us to MGH), I wouldn't give it up for any other line- especially not the green line. Note: Don't attempt to get on the train between 8:20am and 9:10am Mon-Fri, especially not with luggage or a big backpack. read more

Oh red line. As a college student, my only method of transportation is the subway, so pretty much have to depend on the red line to get anywhere or do anything. Convenient way to get to the major "squares" of the area. The buses are fairly clean; they come pretty often during peak hours but oh my god the wait is foreverrrrrr when you're trying to get anywhere that's not between 5-7pm or 7-9am. My favourite part is right before it gets to Charles/MGH and you can cross the bridge aboveground. Yayyy read more

I notice a lot of Yelpers giving the Red Line 4 or 5 stars saying, "well, it's better than the green line." yes, the red line is better than the green line because you're not *always packed into it like sardines, set to simmer in a sweaty, salty packed can, I can't think of anything that better resembles this analogy. It's not as dirty as the Orange line. Not the Train itself but all the stations on the Orange Line are filthy and look like they haven't been maintained in decades, because they haven't been. And the Silver line is a %&*@ing bus. Comparisons aside, look at the red line- it's dirty, smelly, the trains are not regularly cleaned- look at the outside windows as they turn black in the winter. The T complains about not having money, but decided for some reason to grant generous retirement that workers take a a young age. The MBTA red line subway line runs from Boston north to Cambridge and south through Quincy to Braintree on the south shore. The 2 downtown stops are Downtown Crossing and Park Street (where you pick up the green line). South Station is the terminal for busses and commuter trains. Kendall (MIT), Central, Harvard, and Porter Square in Cambridge are all on the red line. The trains run every 5 or 10 minutes during rush hour and usually 15 minutes otherwise, except about 20 to 25 minutes late nights and Sundays. The red line is safe, not like some subways in New York or Los Angeles. The cars are relatively new and remarkably graffiti free. The seats are neither comfortable nor uncomfortable. Standard big city subway seating. Signs are clearly marked. The stations often are self serve with no attendants around so you must use their self serve kiosks which take both cash and credit cards. Parking and driving are problematic in Boston so taking the "T" is a smart bet. If you do drive a car, be prepared to pony up beaucoup dollars for parking. Boston is one of the most expensive cities in the country for parking costs. You can spend $40 to park for the day if you are not careful. There is parking under the Boston Common but I forget how much they charge. Anyhoo, I am a big fan of the Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority Red Line. read more

This review is specifically for the Red Line. Usually I am fond of this service, as much as anyone can be "fond" of riding the T. I am grateful for public transportation. Ours is better than some other cities, and goes more places. The Red Line is usually a little less scary than some of the others too. That said, it seems to break more often than the other lines, (except the Green Line) and be delayed more often. I am prepared to deal with delays but when it COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN for the THIRD TIME on a FRIDAY NIGHT when I'm TRYING TO GET TO SOUTH STATION...!..!!.!.!.... *controlling breathing* Seriously on Friday night I was so so so upset with the Red Line. I pay for a monthly pass, only to miss my bus because the train was broken for an hour, getting sweaty and crowded, and generally upsetting me more and more until I found myself thinking the reassuring thought that "There's no one I can kill to make this better." If it was the first time I'd be mad but let it go. Three times in the past two months is not OK. How are we supposed to feel safe riding these beasts when they break so often? Are they being maintained? Do they just release them into the wild and let them run back and forth from Braintree to Alewife until they die? Can't they shoot them and dump the carcass at like 4am on a Wednesday? I'd write them another letter if I didn't think they'd "post" it in the urinal. read more

One of the worst lines the MBTA has. The Green Line is full of perverts. The Orange Line stinks and has too many knuckleheads. The red line is full of delays. If you live in the Cambridge/Alewife part, then you're golden but anyone from the Braintree/Ashmont direction gets constantly screwed over. I don't know how many trains run southbound during rush hour compared to northbound. It seems for every one train that is heading towards Ashmont or Braintree, you get 3 that go towards Alewife. WTF! Why are there so many trains going one way and not the other. This happens all day but especially during rush hour. You can wait at Park St and look at the signs and see Alewife trains arriving in 5 minutes, 3 minutes and one is already in the station. On the other side, you'd see Ashmont 6 minutes, Braintree 8 minutes. then the next ones won't be for 10 minutes later! Makes no sense. Another issue is that whenever it's cold outside, there is a supposedly "disabled train." Every time it's cold, storm, snowing without fail. How come they aren't warming the trains up in the morning? Are they even doing maintenance? How do so many trains just stop working. But you can be sure that they'll be service to Alewife though. This may happen to other lines but I've never experienced it. The red line loves to stop halfway into the station! WTF is wrong with this picture? Ok I can understand if a train is in the station in front of you and you have to stop but there is nothing there. The previous train left 3-4 minutes ago and is a few stations down the line. Why the hell would you stop halfway into the station? Just pull all the way in and stop so people can at least get on. It looks so retarded to just pause there. Seriously, who put this policy in place? A baboon? Speaking of pauses, you have to love it when you're trying to catch a bus and the train pauses just outside of the station for no reason. Then as soon as the bus leaves, the train pulls in and opens the doors to let you wait for the next one. Thanks. My last gripe are the people who bring baby carriages during rush hour and demand a seat. Sorry, you're already taking up too much space with your carriage. Sit in that. read more

First off, yelp reviews from people who don't ride the red line every day are worthless. I have ridden the green line, orange line, and red line daily for the past nine years and four of them have been on the red line. The service has degraded to a point where it now rivals the green line for worst MBTA line. When I first started taking it I remember telling my buddy how great a line it was, best around, and then it started getting worse before the construction, and after the construction it has been downright awful the majority of times. Mostly delays because of disabled trains and signal issues, now my regular commute takes an additional six minutes in the morning because the driver waits too long after people have already boarded the train. I am consistently late for my job and now finally have to change my schedule by waking up 10 minutes earlier each day to accommodate for the MBTA's disservice. The fact that the MBTA wants to throw money at the problem and charge more drives me mad. Their problems are inherent and the root of the issues lies in infrastructure and inefficiency. Everything from the tracks to the policies and approach are old and broken. I digress because it's a monopoly and the only game in town. Boston is too expensive to take a cab and parking is brutal and also insanely expensive. So for that, the MBTA gets two stars simply for existing as an alternative and nothing more. read more

Have you ever had one of those days when your poor friend's bag gets stuck on the chair 15 seconds before your stop, and then gets freed 30 seconds after the doors' closed and you've missed your exit? Yeah, we had one of those on our way to our hotel (I believe it was off the Kendall/MIT exit), and we ended up at Central. It was 3 days or so before NYE, and most students seemed to have gone home for the holidays - because Cambridge looked relatively empty. The subway station had no more than 4-5 people on a Friday night. We got off to re-enter and head in the opposite direction, but as soon as we got back inside, the most alarming thing happened. A girl jumped onto the tracks right in front of us. There's nothing funny about it - no story to tell. Just a happy enough ending for us to walk away with - the MBTA staff members reacted extremely quickly, halting subway traffic and closing the station as firemen arrived in time to stop her from hurting herself. I applaud everyone who works for the MBTA & the local fire department for responding so quickly, calmly, and sympathetically. To the morons at the station who were laughing: WTF. Ah, the Jewel of the MBTA. It goes to all the most popular places. It comes frequently. It has super-high capacity. Yes, it gets crowded during rush hour, but when you watch the rush hour crowd get off at Harvard and see how many people were just transported from one place to another, it's an awesome sight to behold. Like the view of the Charles from the rickety old salt-and-pepper bridge as you come into the city from points west. Problems? Sometimes the ancient tracks need repairs and the trains have to use just one set. Sometimes the decades-old cars break down. (For a kick, look at the screens in the drivers' compartment sometime; none of the city's college students were even alive when they still made screens like that.) Sometimes the train just catches on fire for no apparent reason. But all of the downsides can easily be blamed on a lack of funding rather than mismanagement. Show me a transit line in the USA that moves more people more efficiently and yet still somehow manages to maintain more than a modicum of classiness. That's right, can't be done. It sucks because it's gross and has gross people on it and it also sucks an hour and a half out of my life every day. Sure, it's better than the Green Line as far as smooth rides go, but it breaks down, stops for no reason, the conductors don't tell you what's going on when it does come to a stop, the tracks are tilted and there are so many rude people who don't know a thing about personal hygeine and basic human decency/manners. On any given morning I have people of all shapes, sizes, races, sexes, etc. touching my body from every angle. It's disgusting and people love piling in on the Braintree trains practically suffocating everyone else. It reeks of urine, putrifying garbage, body odor and curry. Oh, and the occasional overdose of nasty perfume sure doesn't help anyone. The Orange Line is gross and has some skeevy people on it but at least it's fast and seldom breaks down. If you have the choice, take the Ashmont line because there are always less people on it. If I only had to take the red line for a couple stops I'm sure it would be more tolerable but I just hate it! I have to say that the Red Line is probably the best in the system. Now I was a loyal Orange Line rider when I lived in Jamaica Plain, but this time I was just visiting, and it struck me that I have always secretly liked the Red Line. I am not defecting, but I am now able to appreciate it for what it is. It is probably the newest, cleanest line. I like you Red Line, but my heart belongs to the Orange Line ;-) read more

I thought NYC trains were slow... but they're literally Switzerland like compared to this garbage transportation system.

The trains are cool and all but do you really need to stop at North station for 10mins everytime?! Anywho I can appreciate the T. I feel a lot safer riding it versus other public transit lines in other cities. I always get nostalgic when riding remembering the good ole days from highschool. Ok back to the T. It's frustrating when I have to meet someone after work for dinner or have dance class and the trains stop for a ridiculous amount of time without an explanation as to why. I'm guessing its because another train is ahead of them?? A brief announcement couldn't hurt right? It's super convenient when driving won't suffice but damn, sometimes it's such a hassle. read more
